battery drops 5% under 1 min without even use of the phone. on standby.
im on royal panache.
ran battery dry than charged it back to 100% and did battery calibration. still horrible!!
any suggestions?
Check battery usage under settings see what's using it up. also check your CPU settings. Although I've had that kind of battery drain. Sense just hands down has terrible battery life. Go AOSP.

Check the CPU usage, find the rogue app.
I'm easily running over 24 hours with my customized Panache ROM.
Clearly, whoever thinks Sense isn't good on battery, never tried one properly.

Whats a rogue app? And how do you get over 24 hours on battery life?
yeah Sense does drain the battery, but the UI is just awesome IMO. I get roughly 19hrs on a full charge with moderate usage(deleted bloatware, setcpu profiles) whereas on AOSP I would get 25+hrs on a full charge with same usage. really, the 'display' is the battery killer on sense. try to lower your backlight brightness, no window animations, and lower the screen timeout to see if that helps you

An app written badly enough to cause CPU to hang in 100% (sometimes it hangs the system, and then the system shows 100% CPU constant usage).
Happened sometimes to me on Nexus. Sometimes can also be caused by restoring system data from backup, if the system data isn't fully compatible.
When I almost don't use the phone - I can probably get past 40 hours of uptime before needing recharge, since the idle drain is somewhere between 1%-2% an hour for me. When I use it heavily (GPS) - I expect it to drain the hell out of battery after 6-7 hours of continued use, and no build would do better, Sense or no Sense. When tethering - it can last towards 10 hours (tethering drain is ~10-12% per hour too). My usage is light, I'm always on auto-brightness, I'm not overclocking, so generally I get the phone to recharge in the evening with half the charge still there - unless I tether for a couple of hours during the day and have several long calls, and in that case I'm charging it 18 hours later with ~20% left.
Ah, and I use customized Royal Panache.

or a simple solution,
1- if ur using 4g turn it off while not in use.
2. edit the sync options and make it longer or manual.
3- when not in use disable wifi.
and suddenly u will get far better battery life

I had the exact same issue. I was able to fix it by going back to stock (via this guide), re-rooting, and re-flashing the ROM. Everything is working great again. Good luck!

Hungry Man ~
Lately I've been running the latest update of the same ROM (Nonsensikal Froyo - now 15.2) without any CPU apps (no o/c'ing through script either), no autokiller, no battery tweaks (just Juice Plotter) only 1 widget (Fancy Widget Pro), JIT enabled, VM heap @32, compcache @18 (default) and depending on which app I look at, TiB or RE, I have +/-110mb of free RAM, very minimal apps. Also, I upgraded to CFSv9. I even bought a Seidio Innocell 1750mh extended life battery. I recalibrate my battery after flashes ....
Oh yeah, a little more info, I am not a power user, just an average user with poor to ok reception, I tend to use wireless at my house b/c reception out here in the woods ain't good, but turn it off when not needed. I use airplane mode during sleeping hours as well. The max of my battery usage is Display, then And OS.
Ok, now the question ..... If I don't use airplane mode, I get maaaaaay-be 6-8 hours of average phone usage, usually less !!
What finally broke me to PM you now is that (i recently put numbers on my battery icon) while typing a text message earlier (a few minutes tops, not on wireless) I watched my battery click down from 50 to 48 !!!
When I charge my phone full & I easily lose 10% in half an hour (I've tried this with SetCPU, JD, CBT, Super Power, CPUBoost Lite - I think you get the gist) ... and not including airplane mode, I NEVER get more than 6-8 hours of battery life !!!
Is there any knowledge that you can give me on this issue or have I pretty much exhausted my options ? I am this PM short of resigning to crappy battery life
Many Thanks for your time ~
Matt
Swyped from my nonsensikal eris using xda app
What does the phone/Spare Parts say is using all the battery? Have you tried flashing and then using the phone without installing apps (other than the essentials?) Are you leaving the phone idle, screen off, and noticing the same big drop?
You could try going to stock for a bit to see if it improves...or trying a different ROM. Maybe you have a dud battery?
Edit: Sorry, you may have meant this to be directed at someone specifically.
Just an observation. If you're not using anything to overclock the phone maybe the battery life would be better if you at least underclock it. I suggest Conap's CPUBoost Lite, free on the market and here. Just set the minimum frequency to 245760 (my suggestion), and I currently have the screen off Minimum to 19200 and the screen off Maximum to 480000.
Also, I used to use Juice Plotter. I theorized that maybe Juice Plotter wasn't great for my battery itself.

I noticed the same thing when I used Juice Plotter. I got significantly less battery life when i had it. Try deleting Juice Plotter and see if you get more life out of your battery.

Actually, the Verizon Network Extender can definitely help without moving. http://www.verizonwireless.com/b2c/store/accessory?action=gotoFemtocell
It's $250, but probably a lot cheaper than moving, and it should help with battery life. It does with me - I get 24-32 hours on a 1750 battery, with WiFi on all of the time (I have the old, non-3G extender.)
I'm running Tazz Froyo and get a minimum of 24 hrs on stock battery. I would try changing roms.
Battery life on my eris was never good, that's why you buy a extended battery. I have the biggest one that they have on amazon and my battery can last for five days with average use

so my battery has been draining really fast too, but my question is does the battery recalibration work? some people have said their battery drops even faster but is that only the first time?
PS. ive been on xtrrom for awhile now (like a month and a half) and it just started dropping. spare parts says android system is greater than the rest, if that helps

Yes, it works if you do it propely. Charge phone to 100%, boot into recovery, wipe battery stats, reboot phone. Use your phone as normal until the battery is fully discharged and it shuts the phone off. I sometimes try to turn it back on also just to make sure it is all the way dead. Plug your phone in to charge it, walk away, don't touch it until it is 100% charged. Turn your phone on and use it as normal. It sometimes will take a few times charging it to see a difference. If I missed anything or mistyped anything some one correct me please lol

No active task killers I just have System Panel installed monitoring and occasionally I use it to kill apps when the phone lags.
As for apps, mostly GMail and the Stock Email app (set up for a work Exchage account) Stock music player for playing to my bluetooth. CraigsNotification is running. I have Facebook set to the longest refresh time, use Gemini Calender for my schedule Pure grid calender widget. Umm google voice is set up for my voicemail but I rarely get those... Go contacts/Dialer for calls. Those are the heavy used ones I can think of. The rest are maybe once every other day usage.
i have my Gmail Sync on, Contact Sync on, Push Microsoft email, and auto brightness i drop about 2% per 4 hours. I wonder if the Craigslist app is killing it's searching alot.
Think it is probably your bluetooth music...try a set of corded headphones/earbuds one day/all day if possible and there should be a noticeable difference...

I would agree, but like I said right now I am at 79% and 2 hours into my phone being off the charger, bluetooth isn't even on and I haven't touched the music as today is my day off... Something in my settings seems to be the culprit cuz Android System at 44% doesn't seem healthy.
I'm on CM7 and get about 12hrs battery life. My mods are as follows:
LauncherPro
Stock kernal
Bloat freezer (get this, freeze apps that may be killing batt. I froze ADW, HTC sync, and various others, just be careful with what you freeze).
Auto screen brightness
Average sync at 2 hours
Wifi on always (3g pulls quite a bit more batt than you'd think)
GPS on (only pulls when in use e.g. maps, navigation)
SetCPU:
Max 998mhz when above 80% batt (90% priority)
Min 245mhz when below 20% batt (100% priority)
Max 800mhz when above 60% batt (60% priority)
Max 998mhz when plugged in (100% priority)
These settings have all increased battery life significantly. I'm at 75% now and have been unplugged since 9am PDT.
Also, Bluetooth only pulls when in use such as streaming.

BT is probably not the issue. I had a bt headset for about a week and listened to audiobooks regularly without a significant loss in battery compared to a wired set. Must be something in the system or an app. Tried a full wipe and a fresh download of the rom?

HAHAHAHA My thoughts exactly!!! And I have an RMA MyTouch so I flashed new EVERYTHING on it and still have the same issues so I know its not a hardware issue (3 different batteries too so yeahhhh...) I have gone all out on this messing with all the settings I can think of and I'm getting NOOOOOO improvement! My newest foray now is turning off the Google backup thing and seeing if that helps any. Anyone here use/not use that feature and see loss or gain of battery? I'm gonna try uninstalling SetCPU next but that seems odd to me as that program was the only thing helping my last phone (HTC Evo) Get well over 15+ hours!
What are the chances that the theme I have is causing the problem? Cuz I saw theme chooser is one of the things listed under android system and android system seems to be the killer of my battery. I use the Mixer v4 theme btw, its the most visual theme I have seen so far I mean it changes ALOT of stuff...
After replacing the battery with a 1600 mah Seidio battery. I still get bad results. For example, during lunch today my phone was at 50% in my locker. After 4 hours, I was at 21%. My Sync, GPS, BT and Wifi are all OFF.
How is this possible?
I use to own a Nexus One and in 4 hours it would go down 2% with CM6. Is Gingerbread an issue here or does my phone need RMA repair?

I'm running stock 2.3.3 and battery life is by far the best over various android versions.
2.3.3 has some weird bug where every once in a while the system gets into a weird drain state like it doesnt go into deep sleep correctly. i just got hit with this last night. it does happen all the time, most of the time on 2.3.3 battery life is excellent. i will lose 6% over 8 hours. but when that awake bug DOES kick in, battery drops like yours did.
you just have to reboot and check it again, the bug likely will clear itself and you wont see it again, for a while.

My N1 on 2.3.3 goes completely dead after 12hrs. I found the solution when doing a Google search. It's to go to Wifi Settings, Advanced, Wi-Fi sleep policy, and change it to Never. You'd think that would reduce battery life, but for some reason now my phone's battery life is very significantly improved. Now it's only down to about 30% after 19hrs when I put it on the charger.
It appears that 2.3.4 will address battery issues in Gingerbread.

I use to own a Nexus One and in 4 hours it would go down 2% with CM6. Is Gingerbread an issue here or does my phone need RMA repair?

I dont think its Gingerbread, ive used both stock and CM7 on my N1 and i was having good bat life on N1 stock gingerbread about 5-6 hours with heavy use, and with CM7 official rom i get 7-8 hours heavy use and up to 19 hours on days i barely use the phone, and on standby i can confirm 8 hours (while im asleep) it drains 6% by the time i wake up of course i do have it personalized and settings applied for bat savings.
I haven't encountered this bug with CM 7.0.3 (based on 2.3.3) but I found it very useful to let the phone just drain the battery completely once in a while (once in a few weeks) and than fully charge it.
After doing that, I can go through two days with regular usage of the device
I'm on CM 7.0.3, 2.3.3 and I'm only getting 13-15 hrs if I'm lucky. Wifi and bluetooth are off only syncing gmail and google contacts. I barely even touch my phone at work for 8 hrs and the battery life sucks.
Another weird thing is that once it gets to 15% left it just automatically dies and shuts down...very frustrating, I'm on the latest pershoot kernel too, the phone was given to me for free last month and it was originally purchased in Feb '10 so I just figure the battery is old and worn out.

No. Your battery is not aged, it just needs re-calibration.
One simple way is to re-calibrate your battery is to charge it when the phone is off or charge using a desktop charher, and you have to over-charge a bit - just leave the battery connecting to power source for an additional 1 hour or more, when the charging process has been completed.
This works every time for me.
Keep in mind that from time to time the battery may need to be re-calibrated again for peak performance.

I thought with a battery this big there wouldn't be much of an issue but if you push this phone it won't last the day.
I have screen set to auto, manual sync, data off, wifi off, gps off and here's how I got on today.
6am Of charger and 5mins checking email twitter then wifi off
7 hrs radio and music player,
Then through out the course of the evening I checked emails etc again for a max of 15 mins.
Phone turned of at 8pm so thats 14hrs but that was 14hrs with everything turned off and not really using the phone, my Desire S I used the same way and at this stage of the evening it still had well over a 3rd of battery left almost half. I installed Juice Defender yesterday and it made no difference.
Is this type of battery life normal for this phone?
A lot of battery related threads are there pal,

Just keep in mind that if you are getting around 5/5½ hours screen on time then you are fine, just fine. Forget about days. And JD will do no good if it doesn't do any bad.
Regards.
Keep in mind I am using Ninphetamine 2.0.2 kernel with villain rom 2.4.2, juicedefender, and did a proper, full battery calibration.
Today I played about 2h of games, listened to music for about 3h, and then did random things like checking email, downloading apps from market etc. I have only Wifi and autorotation always enabled. It's been about 12 hours since I unplugged it, and I am at 83% of my battery life. Looks like I won't have to charge it for 4-5 days using it regularly.

slugger, from this and your other posts, it seems you don't like this phone much. At all.
Why keep it? Curious.

Here's my battey life from a little while ago on CM7. I'm using Juice Defender Ultimate and in my opinion, it makes a huge difference.

That's about as good as I've managed, but that's with it basically being still, only sending a few text messages. Don't think it'd have managed that long with music/game playing added in.

When a geek is inlove with a device, its pretty hard to let it go despite the flaw. Im on the same boat right now.

That's simply not true.
with very low usage i achieved 4 days but with high usage as stated it will last 1-2 days max
9 hours.
Thats it.

If he had mobile data and the phone turned off and just on wifi that's doable.
Listening to music with the screen off is a pretty low consumption scenario, cos the cpu will hit 200mhz and the dps' will be doing most of the work.
And considering that the screen and the mobile data connection are #1 and #2 users of power!
Doable but still maybe a slight exaggeration.
The phone has a very low idle draw though, so when its just sitting there not doing anything in deep sleep, you know you wont find your battery dead which is good.
Do people really not have access to chargers in a 12-24hr period? I don't get this whole batt life issue. Yeah, they suck, but seriously, who can't plug their phone in for 20-30mins a couple times a day?
oh and I deft call BS on not having to charge for four days. Never going to happen. Even if you dont touch your phone at all for four days. Still won't happen.

Then stop making it even worse by messing up the memory (of battery) by constantly plugging in and out.

OT: I got a huge feeling ATK is consuming alot of battery! I just backed up Auto Task Killer Pro to my SD-Card. Uninstalled the app. Next I'm going to see if my batt. lvl. consumption shows improvement.
Will calibrate battery too as soon as it reaches 100%.

Haha.
Do a search. My battery will be just fine.
Finally got my desire z, it came with 2.3.3 unfortunately. So as yet not rooted or anything as I don't have the time just now.
Was just wondering what people's current drain was, mine seems to be around 32mA on standby which shoots up to between 200-350mA with screen on, brightness at 12%.
1. Would this be considered normal for stock?
2. I also am having the dialler high useage issue, tried most of the fixes but still quite high, was this ever resolved properly?
3. Thinking of romming to virtuous sense 2.0 if it will improve the battery drain, can some of you give rough screen off current drain figures please? Especially sense based roms as that's what I would be using.
Thanks.
I used the 1350mAh battery for a long time and then finally caved in to get a Mugen Power 1800mAh. Since then Sense based or not my drain doesn't go below 15% for a full day Wifi (always on), Data (always on - when no WiFi) and Bluetooth on for 6 hours (during travelling).
I would suggest you do the same to get the peace of mind everyone deserves but HTC wasn't caring enough to pack in.
With a 1800mAh battery you don't even have to worry about anything, no matter what you try.
Interesting. It really makes that much of a difference does it?
Where do I get them?

Yup it does, mine is a 1900 mah from chi chi tec
I got my Mugen 1800 from eBay. But you can get it from their website directly. Beware of fakes! If it's too cheap to be true, it is.
Here's a tip, you really don't need much brightness indoors and turn off GPS, wifi when not using it, and screen timeout to like 1 minute.

Way ahead of you, my brightness is always 10% ish, same with gps and wifi, fb every 4 hrs and mails every 6.
I'm now rooted with S-OFF on gingerbread stock. Gonna install cwm and maybe try a different kernel. Any recommendations as to one which will work with stock?
No idea on the kernel, but I really do suggest a bigger battery. I just went back to the stock one for a few days and it was noticeably less.

Just use glite problem solved lol
I'm using bulletproof miui and my standby sits around 28mA with around 150-250 mA regular use. My battery lasts a full day with medium usage (4h screen on, wifi on, 18-20hrs unplugged total). I would say you're sitting a bit high with your battery consumption and could benefit from an undervolted kernel. I have my cpu clocked at 1ghz max these days..
Hope that helps!

I'm thinking my battery just hasn't settled yet as I'm using the battery monitor app and it tells me I'm getting a 32mA draw with screen off but my battery is lasting only around 18 hours with light use and a lot of standby time. For a rough calculation: 1300mAh/32mAh = 39ish hours (standby), deduct 10 hours for messing around, I should be getting at least 24 hours I would think (very rough calculation).
Have only charged it maybe 5 times so far, its probably still being worn in as it seems to drain damn quick on standby at 32mA.
Possibly, do you know your voltage levels for each clock speed? I can get a good 35+ hours with light use and standby at night (~3 hours screen on with wifi connected always)

I'm still on stock just now. Just realised that 'always on mobile data' was on, so I have turned that off as my sync apps will still work and I don't use push email. I'll try that over the next few days and see if it makes a difference as well as the battery getting charged with more cycles to break it in.
If that still leaves it to be desired, then I'm gonna put virtuous sense 2.0.0 on and use underclocking as that made a massive difference with my old wildfire.
What rom are you using bik_jack?
I'm using bulletproof miui but was getting roughly the same voltage numbers with cm7 nightlies before I switched to bulletproof in June.
Both underclocking down to 368mhz with the default undervoltage settings used in tsubus' kernel.

i made a barebones stripped ROM based on the newest tmo OTA, i made optimizations to get better battery life, and stripped tons out to get the most ram possible, and keep the ui fast and snappy.
my newest version 1.3, offers the best battery life in any rom that i have ever used, its super fast (no need for OC), offers the most free ram and is located here :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1324616
give it a try! im sure it will get u more battery life
Of course, now I've realised that my network (3uk) no longer have a 2g contract with orange, so all this setting does for me is stop me receiving txts and calls with it off. Tch. Looks like I will be trying virtuous after all.
The standby battery drain doesn't make sense at all, almost like my battery isn't really 1300mAh.
I use an Anker 1600mAh battery that I got off ebay in my DZ. The seller had a sale of 2 going on for $15, not a bad deal. link to it is here
It's listed for the Incredible 2 / Incredible S, but it seems those batteries are a perfect fit for the Desire Z / G2. Doesn't need any aftermarket casing or modding.
Right now, I am using the ICS beta by tazinator and yesterday I got ~12-13 hours of playing around with it very heavily. My battery can last 22-28 hours with moderate and light use on a normal day.
Sadly, I don't have any if those issues you listed, Dialer usage and such even with CM7. Used to use virtuous sense but went over to AOSP/CM7 instead. Found AOSP being more nicer on the battery, but that's just my feeling - I tend to think Sense drains more battery.
Yeah I think sense is a bit worse on the battery but I've really come to love sense, never really got on with cyanogen roms.
Turns out I was wrong about the data always on and my provider, it all works so I'll keep testing that before I start with roms.
I know mugen batteries are supposed to be good, any other recommendations for brands? I'll check the link out.
UPDATE: If battery monitor is to be believed, my global standby estimate is increasing with every charge, so maybe it is just a case of breaking the battery in. Now at 21.5hrs, I'll continue to monitor the situation, this might also be due to the change of data setting as well.
