I was excited that I received a message to update my firmware to 2.2 Froyo, but when I tried doing so I kept getting errors at the installation screen. It would download then go to the installation screen and give me an error.
I'm not sure if I bricked the phone without knowing or something, but I get the following error message when trying to upgrade:
E:Can't open /cache/recovery/command
I have no idea what that is/where it is. I checked my SD Card, but I didn't see anything like that there. I'm guessing I'm missing that folder/file, but I don't know where it would have went or if I can get it back.
I've tried to do the update both through my Bravo and downloading a ZIP file and trying to do it through the Recovery screen. I tried everything Motorola suggests on their website as well as searched Google a lot, but came up with nothing.
I should add that even when I click "applysdcard:update.zip" it gives me a few errors and aborts the installation.
I'm just wondering if there's any way to fix this so I can upgrade my firmware?
Thanks to anyone that can help.

I'm sure there is a solution, but just forget it and install 2.2 SBF.

Yes, I used Root Explorer. I'm guessing by MCFarmfresh's post that there issome sort of original build for the phone? I've looked everywhere for hours all night last night before resorting to asking somewhere, but I couldn't find anything and the "solutions" I've seen all did not work. I kept getting the same errors.
Thank you for replying. If you can help, it'll be very much appreciated.
I have a rooted Bravo and I deleted some of the bloatware, and I received the Froyo update and everytime I download and the system resets I get an error and the update stops. Selecting from memory card doesnt work for me, and I dont have a backup of the original settings to re-install (which I'm not sure how to do that either). If anyone has any suggestions I'm open.
its checking for att apps
if you renamed them name them back to apk
I didn't rename them, I deleted them off my phone.

I don't know much about these things but I would think that would be a bad thing to do...
I was able to get the update to install to my phone but now it is running slow
Any more info on how to fix this issue?
OK, so I tried everything that's suggested pretty much everywhere and I'm still unable to update. I'm not sure if I'm doing something wrong or what, but I've tried resetting the phone via the phone/recovery screen, tried updating via the phone, and I also tried replacing the original build, but nothing worked so far.
I have no idea what else I can do, but any help would be appreciated.

If nothing else works, you can always sbf. It sounds scarier than it really is, actually it is pretty easy. Just make sure you follow the directions. I've done several sbf's and they have all turned out perfectly.

Thanks. I'm not sure what it was, but I switched to my Windows XP desktop (from my Windows 7 Home 64-bit laptop) and the SBF Flash worked perfectly, thanks bandroid, yourself, and others. I really appreciate all of the help given. 2.2 looks and feels a lot better than 2.1 so I'm really happy about that.

If you will give me your email I can get it to you. For the life of me I cannot figure out hhow to attach files through pm using my phone lol. You can also use the .sbf method to upgrade but I'll definitely get the files to you if you send me your email.
SBF'in it...
Okay....so one of your gentleman above (I'm new to the forum ish) stated that he had deleted some apps off of his OS. I did the same thing with AT&T Hotspot Locator (unfortunately, AT&T was quick on merging this standalone app into MyAT&T so I couldn't get the atthotspotlocator.apk back). I fixed this using the SBF file.
I won't give you the step by step but I can tell you RSD Lite is a free program from Motorola. It's basically the program they use to flash boot SW onto an otherwise dead device.
Don't be intimidated by it because it really is rather easy to facilitate. Just do like I did and YouTube how to load an SBF into a motorola device. You can pause and replay as you go along to assure no errors. Takes like 15 minutes once you've got all the necessary files downloaded.
Well, that lasted long...
Everything was going fairly well until this morning when I clicked on the phone button (default launcher) and tried to go into the dialer, then it just closed every time I tried doing so.
To try to fix this I rebooted my phone, nothing; restored, nothing; factory reset, nothing; re-installed 2.2.1 FroYo via flashing the SBF with RSD Lite and 'apply:sdcard:update.zip' through Android's Recovery Screen, nothing.
When I tried doing the last 2, however, I received these errors (the first one I had with the first problem and the other 2 are new):
E:Can't mount CACHE: recovery/command
E:Can't mount CACHE: recovery/caller
E:Can't mount CACHE: recovery/log
Now, with the "caller" error, I did NOT touch anything having to do with the dialer and whatnot. That I know.
The last time I had problems with my laptop so I tried it on my desktop and it worked, but now I tried the desktop and it still isn't working properly. Some of the features that I had with the update are now gone such as the "third party apps" option and the sliding "lock screen" is now permanently present.
Any help with this is appreciated.
Hey folks,
maybe someone can help me.
In the morning on my A500 appeared an update available message. I tried to install it, but it failed in the middle. So I got a brick, which I solved with the chinese update. Afterwards I pushed my saved system.img.
BUT: Now the Build Number says Acer_A500_1.112. instead of Acer_A500_1.112.01_EMEA_CUS7
I checked the build.prop but there the correct build number is written.
Also another check of update gimme the message, that my system is up-to-date.
Is anyone able to provide help, like EMEA flexrom.img, boot.img, or some useful advises?
There is a EMEA signed update.zip floating around. Try to restore with that one and see what happens.
I got the same "Update" message (34MB?). I don't know if it was because mine was already rooted. D/L and updated, in the middle the dreadful Triangle with the exclamation mark pops up. Bricked! Did a reboot and try to reapply the update again..Bricked again.
Is this because I'd rooted the tablet?
gotta push flexrom
You gotta push your flexrom image onto the tablet too then "FACTORY RESET". The flexrom (mmcblk0p6) has the information of the update... that is where you are getting the difference from (if i am not mistaken)...
Try that and see if it helps ... I believe it should... jejeje

Nope, mine was rooted with gingerbreak 1.20 and worked fine.
did you delete/rename any phone apks???
or delete/rename any stock software???
I have not messed or removed anything, was rooted, root-explorer/titanium loaded and updated without issue.
reran gingerbreak afterwords and all is well....
Have never seen any OTA update in Australia :|
Wish I knew what was inside this update... media player still only sees mp4, mp3... email doesn't allow exchange... I wonder how many updates we will have to wait for to get a few of the things I want?... I didn't root so that I could load updates easily but if I have to try to fix this thing up the way I did my epic then I guess I will...shame they couldn't put divx, wmv, and some other poplar codecs in this... don't they realize some of us bought this to work with too? If exchange was added I would be sorta happy... (I love my A500 short of a couple things)

Typically I ignore posts that seem to just be complaining, but you seem real torn up about this so... go to settings, accounts, add your exchange account and be happy.
Another thing that can cause the update to hang would be any edits to your build.prop (ie. Netflix early fixes, etc). Changing back to the original resolved the triangular fail icon for me and completed the update with root still installed, gingerbreak did have to be I installed again but root is still attainable.

You are correct, there is a thread in the general fourm with a link to all the apk's that came stock on the system.
I can't post links yet, but either thread about the OTA update you will find your required apk's.

Ive only had my a500 for a week. I have not removed/deleted/renamed any of the stock apps. I installed gingerbreak (to root) and thats about it. oh i changed the resolution with LCD density changer. I cant update.
So i reset back to stock and still no luck. Any ideas?

I was having all kinds of problems not getting the update to run and kept Triangle halt..
I resolved it by the following:
you dont need to do anything with Gingerbreak, its ok. The problem is for those that changed any system files. In my case, i wanted exchange, so i was using a different email.apk, well as learned from another thread here, if you look in Cache/recovery/logs, you will see a file where you can see where the update went wrong. Like i said, in my case, i saw the file size was not what was expected for email.apk. I removed the exchange account, used rootexp and renamed email.apk.old (the original) to email.apk and the obex file then the update worked correctly.
I was going crazy as i was messing with this instead of watching my heat vs the bulls 1st half.

look at your /Cache/recovery/logs for an error and post results
I had to try about 7-8 times looking in the recovery log after each time to see what .apk that i forgot that I had deleted, then put it back and try again. I finally was successful and haven't seen much difference other than no random wake ups. Maybe a little snappier.
I had mine hang in recovery every unsuccessful update which is NOT THE SAME AS BRICKING.
Hey all,
I looked through the posts and wasn't able to find the answer so I am leaving this. Basically I upgraded my X from a rooted froyo to GB using the 2 files provided by P3Droid to go from the SBF froyo to GB rooted. It works great and I am having no freezing issues however the phone keeps trying to update and download the GB over the air update. I don't know how to stop this from happening or if I did something wrong. I have deleted a few of the Verizon apps that should stop any update from taking place anyway. I thank you in advance for your help.
I downloaded the "rooted gingerbread .596" from p3droid and my Droid X has never asked to update.
the only other thing I can think of is that I accidentally hit check for update on my phone but I don't think that it should have even found the gingerbread once I had installed it myself...
I just went into my settings and into "about phone". I also checked for a update and it says that it is up to date no update is necessary. So I have no idea what is going on. Only thing I can suggest is if it continues, is to SBF back to Froyo and reinstall p3Droid's rooted .596 again. Sorry I couldn't be more helpful.
You could let the update happen, it would go partially, fail and reboot and you're all set
Same problem with Sprint EVO 4g
I have also just installed "4.22.651.2 Rooted & De-Odexed" after accidentally dl the OTA update last week. I just hoped that installing the new ROM would eliminate the notifications to install the update but unfortunately it did not.
I did try to let it install so as to let it fail and rebooted, and the notification is still there.
Is there maybe a way to manually remove the update file?

this is the Droid X sub-forum. You will get the proper help if you post in the Evo section.
Sorry I just didn't find anything even closely related to this issue here and thought it would be best to not start a new thread. Isn't this a software issue and therefore somewhat universal?

Thank you very much!
I'm having the same problem. It comes and goes with no ability to clear. It always pops up after a reboot. It never actually downloads, at least that I've seen....
Does anyone know which package to freeze so the updater stops flagging?
Stop OTA Updates
Freeze the application called "Updater 2.3.3".
Strangest thing this morning... I'd been trying unsucessfully to root my device with a cooked rom to no avail... couldn't get it to boot into recovery after several tries of the "Acer" auto update a couple of weeks ago... tab worked fine and was rooted so Titanium Backup worked.... this morning, a 497meg update downloaded and updated my system to ACER_A500_4.010.11_COM_GEN2 and worked with no problems. Now, I am in no way able to re-root the system. Any suggestions?

Thanks guys for the info, however,

"Iconia Root could not be installed. Free up some space and try again"
I am not new to this and have checked most all options I could think of.... even rooted, bricked and fixed a few devices. Been around on xda since '06 been cooking phones since the early Palm days...
This is a factory download.... literally automatic.....
Have got lots of irons in the fire and no time to decode software on this device.
While you guys are at it, there are some programs from the Market that reflect: "unsucessful install".
Thanks for the link that I've already tried prior to posting, and again this am..... with same results as above.
Any other suggestions?

sounds like you filled up your onboard memory 16GB?
32gb on board, no matter what or how much is stopped, will not root.
If you are having issues rooting your kindle with guides online the reason behind it is that you are using an outdated version of "Root_with_Restore_by_Bin4ry_v*" Currently most of the guides all have you downloading and using Root_with_Restore_by_Bin4ry_v17. You want to use a version of Root_with_Restore_by_Bin4ry_v version 21 or above. I did mine with version 21 and my gf's with version 28. I just wanted to make sure that it would work with a latest i could find.
Root_with_Restore_by_Bin4ry_v21 can be found with the link provided below. You can also google other Root_with_Restore_by_Bin4ry_v and try them out until you get your kindle rooted.
apparently i can't link outside

just copy it and paste it then backspace on the spaces to make it a usable url

hi, thanks for the above.
as a total noob to this, i sppent most of thursday researching how to do this, then carried it out eventually successfully too, only to wanke up on friday morning to see my device had updated to 7.3.1.
ive now downloaded binary v28, root with restore - how do i use this version? i used this guide -
androidforums com/kindle-fire-hd-all-things-root/669366-idiots-guide-rooting-kindle-fire-hd-7-7-2-3-a.html
to carry out my rooting, so i now need to know how to do it using the v28 version, and if there is any differences to the process linked above.
also, i downloaded droidwall, and thought i had blocked the updating app, but it obviously hadnt. then i noticed at the top it said "firewall disabled" how do i enable this?
and finally, how do i get to change the launcher / user interface/ how can i change this to a one similar to the galaxy tab or something else like this?
yes, i am a noob, and all help is welcome guys. many thanks in advance.

Yeah the only difference is that you are using an upgraded version of program they have so instead of using v17 use newer version. I think once you install the new google play store all you have to do is find GO Launcher in the market place.

Download DroidWall from the googplaystore, that app disables updates. I don't know much about golauncher. If you follow the guide and have googleplaystore then you should be able to download everything.
I have confirmed that Bin4ry (I used v26) method works fine for both 7.3.0 and the new 7.3.1 update that is just rolling out. Here are some instructions that hopefully is clear for everyone (link). Obviously the main credit goes to the root method.

Problems with attempting to root on 7.3.1
Hello-
I have used the "Root with Restore by Bin4ry_v29" to no avail and I am extremely perplexed as to whats going wrong. I have followed all the instructions outlined and during the process I do see multiple instances within the application saying "permissions denied" yet it continues as if everything is ok. Well, once it says everything is finished and I have rebooted the device multiple times, its EXTREMELY sluggish and borderline unresponsive. It also doesn't have root access as Superuser isn't on the device. So I am asking for any advice/guidance anyone can provide that maybe knows whats up or has had this happen and knows what the problem is.
Please help!
ps: Not new to rooting either as I have rooted all the android phones I have ever had with no problems but I know the Kindle is a different beast.
Thanks!
I'm on my phone so I can't post the link but if you search you'll find it, but I just rooted a new KFHD four days ago by using prokenexus how to root for noon guide. I followed it from start to finish and was completely successful. Took a total of about 45 minutes. He has two ways to root in his thread, automated and manual. I always like doing manual so I can see everything that is going on. But it worked like a charm. So might want to give that a look.

So did I - and it worked happily for three seconds until it rebooted again and I found I had 7.4.1 on the Kindle.
I can't find anything else on the web atm on 7.4.1 so either I've been hacked or I'm one of the first to get it.
I just did mine a second ago. Second time Ive done this, but I cant rememeber what i did last time to remedy the issue. Once I did it, it fixed the lag. hmmm... someone please help me remember....

Super slow after boot solved!
Ok even though this guide stated that if you are on version 7.2.3, you don't need to run rootqemu. Bat method, that was not true in my case. After running through the runme phase in cmnd prompt, choosing normal root, and letting the process finish and reboot, my device was ridiculously slow, and not rooted might I add. Here's the trick though, immediately after that process finishes, you need to run the Rootqemu method also. But when you try to run Rootqemu.bat by right clicking and running as administrator, it doesn't recognize the device. What I had to do was left click on ONLY the folder that contained the Rootqemu files, and while only that folder is highlighted, you hold down the shift key and right click on the folder. Then you are going to click on "run command prompt here". Once the command prompt opens, you are going to type Rootqemu.bat and press enter. Then you can press 1 to root, let the program run through its few stages, and after it reboots several times and finishes it's process, voila no more lag, and you should be finally rooted. Also after that process, download a program called Kindlefree. It's an absolutely amazing, and simple way to install all the essential Google apps "aka" Gapps to your rooted Kindle fire hd. I hope this helps everyone like it did me!

So did I - and it worked happily for three seconds until it rebooted again and I found I had 7.4.1 on the Kindle.
I can't find anything else on the web atm on 7.4.1 so either I've been hacked or I'm one of the first to get it.

I Have i too but i accidentally cut the kindle off in the prosses so i kinda have it. all i got out of it was adding the batt % in status bar. also amazon says it is a minor update so there are no release notes.

Hello fellow users and visitors. I've been following this site for a while now, yes I'm considered a "noob" here but I have my experiences well beyond the level of a "noob." This is my first post, and I indeed have a KF HD 7. Since there is so much confusion as far as CLEAR NEWBIES INSTRUCTIONS, I've decided to give everyone the guide I used to root my Kindle, which was derived from a guide here at XDA itself. You can find it here at
androidcowboy (DOT) com /2013/04/root-kindle-fire-hd-7-3-0-firmware/
This DOES indeed work for 7.3.1 as mine was, it took me two tries. But heed my warning, rooting this beauty MAY cause some issues as it has to mine such as randomly shutting off, battery showing up as 0% on some occasions when it is turned on, and sometimes refusing to charge more frequently than it used to. Those issues eventually happen without root, some people have these problems the first week of having a fresh new KFHD7, and I have friends with the same Kindle, rooted, and theirs do not present same issue, so I guess some do some don't.
Good luck and happy rooting. Now you can revive Google Play!
Another confirmation for 7.3.1. I followed Android Cowboy's procedures for both rooting and installing Google Play. Very easy. Thanks Cowboy!

If you have issues rooting, please go to my thread in my signature. I addressed the issue of rooting on 7.3.1, and have written quick explanation for rooting with Bin4ry's method. The guide goes on to help you flash a custom ROM, should you so desire to get rid of that nasty Amazon OS interface.
