I never noticed this before, but it takes a LOT of effort to get the lock on the keyboard to move to the right. It hits the center and clicks pretty easily, but it's not secure until it locks to the right.
Is my dock defective or is this normal?
the more you 'transform' it, the more smoother the the locking mechanism gets and doesn't take much effort now to get it locked completely on the right side.
the first time i docked it, it didn't click all the way, i picked up by keyboard and tablet fell. luckily my foot was in the way to break the fall!

Thank you. I hope that's the case or I'll be sending in another RMA to Asus.... these return shipping costs could buy me another tablet! Lol
I would rather have to press it down and have it lock into place and stay there than have to worry about it falling out of the dock.
You might try moving the lock switch to the locked position when you think you have it in place.
Also make sure the docking slot is not on an angle that is causing the unit to go in off angle and press against the back or the front. I always the docking slot is vertical when I dock my tablet.
VERY EASY
This is how you do it:
0) set the dock horizontally with keyboard facing up
1) Make sure the dock hinge is in closed position
2) lay the tablet on the dock
3) align the tablet so that the left and right sides are lined up with the dock
4) slide the tablet as close to the connector port as possible
5) with both hands holding the dock/tablet sandwich, tilt the sandwich 90 degrees, such that gravity will pull the tablet down to the dock's connector
6) gently push down on the tablet's top edge until the tablet's top edge is aligned with the dock's edge
before opening the sandwich, You can verify if you did this correctly, by seeing if the dock's switch is locked (right side), as it should automatically lock if the tablet has been completely settled in properly.
that's a lot of steps.
switch to the left
line it up
press tablet down into dock
switch moves to the far right and is pretty much flush right when it's locked
little pull to verify.
I don't really think about it at this point.

You won't always be able to align it properly without the dock in closed position. Once you do it wrong once, you will permanently scratch the metal port opening of the tablet.
And you won't be able to sell it as new once Transformer 2 comes out..
Don't know about you, but it's not exactly rocket science seeing if the edges are close to matching before pressing down. And with the switch to the left it pretty much falls into place going right to left. It finds its home, and then just press down. Unless you're an oaf trying to jam it in, you shouldn't have a problem utilizing gravity and a little guidance.
Besides, when you undock it, the switch is to the left. It just makes sense you should be able to dock it from that position. I dock an undock at least three times a day without issue and without a scratch on the bottom of my TF.

Believe me, I'm sure that I know how to dock the tablet, but to get it to lock requires a LOT of force. I feel like the tablet is warping because I have to use so much pressure. I've seen reviews where it's effortless and to me that's not the case. I just hope it "loosens up" with time.
To the OP, I also have had issues getting the locking mechanism to fully engage and it has had nothing to do with how well I line up the tablet. At first I couldn't get the switch to go more than halfway no matter what I did. After detaching and reattaching a number of times I was able to get it click in half way with ease, and then by putting downward pressure starting from the right side and rocking to the left it would click in more so the switch was almost fully to the right, at which point I could manually move the switch the rest of the way. Now things have worn in so I can just line it up for a half click and a little more downward pressure from the middle locks in both sides. I sometimes have to manually move the switch the rest of the way still but it's definitely gotten much better and removal is much smoother now as well.

Of course, anyone can line up X-Axis (left/right side) of the dock with the tablet, but on mine, the hinge is wide enough to also have some leeway on the Y-Axis (height or forward/backward).
So even if you line up the left/right properly by eye, you can't line up the forward/backward properly by eye.
And you will scratch the long sides of the metal port if you don't lay them against each other before insertion.
Maybe yours isn't have extra space on the Y-Axis that most have to worry about.

No problem, I was pretty worried for a while, especially when I first got the dock because I couldn't get it to go more than half way no matter what I did. Would have been frustrating to get a new dock only to find out it was the tablet itself that was misaligned! It seems to get a little better each day though, so thankfully I don't think that will be an issue for me and should get better for you as well.

yeah i have had mine almost a week now i noticed it after i removed that plastic screen thing that was on the back of the screen.
it seems kinda cheap feeling when i push down on the screen and i hear it sweak and move every time. should i take it back?
Mine started sqeaking and creaking today. NOOOOO!
I only had it for 2 days. I kept the plastic on the back of the screen and it still does this by the way. Its too awesome of a phone for this litte stuff to bother me though. I came from a Touch Dual that had a solid keyboard for a little over a year before it became wobbly and squeky before it final died. So I imagine its better sooner than latter cause you just adapt the longer you use it.
My 2 Cents,
Jcostanza4
I had the same problem the first day I got mine. I'm still trying to figure out a way to keep it from squeaking/creaking. Honestly it's just annoying right now. My TYTN II was a brick compared to this phone as far as size and weight. If I figure anything out I'll post it up.
The only idea I've had so far is to take one of my old Palm screen shields and use it on the back of the screen. However since I ordered a Zagg full body protector I think I actually might get that piece with the set. Like I said I'll post up when I got more info.
try adding a little strip of adhesive felt to the upper part of the chin (where it meets the screen when closed). Works for me. Actually, if you want to test this out or cant find the felt, take three post it notes(together for the right thickness), cut them down, black out with a magic marker, and you'll get the same effect. Barely noticable.
yes mines loose too you feel it when you only hold the bottom and tap the screen u here the screen and the body click.

Maybe you're pressing too hard? Mine creaks if I really press down hard.
On my wing, I had to press down hard, it's built for a stylus.
But this device is built for your fingers, and should respond with a very light touch. Try using it with barely touching it, if it doesn't respond try pressing a tiny bit harder, you should not have to push down hard enough to make the screen creak -- unless the screen is badly attached, in which case I would take it back to the store.
this is what happens when HTC wants a thin, light phone with a hardware qwerty
it doesnt bother me much though
I had a heck of a time with my Vibrant and a creaky bezel and am pretty happy with the solid construction of the NS so far.
Do me a favor and tap around your bezel with your finger and tell me if you get a different pitched sound from the area around the power button than from the rest of the bezel. I am just curious if that is normal or if I have a bezel that will eventually get loose over time.
Thanks!
My bezzle near the power button is fine, however, I can hear a click and creaking from the bottom of the phone, next to the USB port, opposite side of the headphone jack. Whenever I press down lightly (like if I were to pick up the phone holding the top and bottom) I can create the sound.
Bummer.

Nitpicky? I just spent $529 + tax, I would like to be sure I don't have a hardware problem. I had a slight issue like this with my Vibrant that turned into a larger problem later. I am simply trying to nip it in the bud.
Thanks for the constructive feedback!

same issue on mine. It turns out that it's just the battery cover, not the actual bottom bezel. When I remove the cover, no creakiness anymore. only option really is to buy a new battery cover when they appear online and see if it still creaks.

Sorry man! I spent the same amount of money too and I don't have this problem! If it doesn't meet your standards then by all means take it back!
I found the issue. The black bezel does in fact move independently of the inside plastic body/structure. It actually moved when pressed on but so little you would not think so. I took the battery cover off and looked and it presses in until it contacts the interior area giving it a place to push against.
I pick up my friends iPhone 4 and realize there is a company who makes quality products!
Yeah, I've got the creak on the bottom of mine as well. It's honestly not something that I'm all that worried about. That's the location that I most usually have a finger there, supporting the device, so I figure that with use it's going to start seeing some kind of wear.
Now, if the screen were to have had some issues, then that would be something different.
I get the creak at the bottom where the USB port is but I also get a creak when I touch the upper right hand corner near the front facing camera. It kind of feels like I'm pushing the corner in.

Hey Guys,
I noticed that several parts of my Touchscreen aren't working from time to time. I guess it is a software issue, because the areas not accepting any touch input are changing from time to time after reboots, screen orientation changes or turning the backlight on and off again. The issue is nonexistent when freshly rebooted and seems to build up when the device is powered on and used.
Anyone else having the same issues?

Yep, I have a stripe about 1" from the bottom edge that's consistently unresponsive. I'm going to hold out until the OTA gets fixed to see if it is maybe a calibration / driver issue.
Edit: Got Asus to give me an RMA, but they expect me to pay shipping on something broken out of the box? F that.

Hey pokey, I've got the exact same issue, easily noticeable using the keyboard in landscape, a whole row of keys in unresponsive (a little less than 1" wide). I noted, however, that as soon as I just as much as touch the frame of the TF with my finger, they become responsive (typing while touching the frame, that is). If I leave my TF on the table, not touching the frame, and trying to type on this row, nothing is detected.
So it's highly unlikely that this is a software problem. I'm thinking of RMAing this thing, though I hesitate between ASUS RMA or store RMA (in both cases I'd have to pay for shipping, bought on internet). What did you end up doing?

Sounds like a similar grounding issue that plagued the Droid Incredible where it wasn't responsive if you laid it down flat on a surface and tried to interact with it.
I have the issue, but it goes away if I'm holding it. So yeah, sounds like that problem with the Incredible. I'm probably going to return mine to Walmart and order another one, hoping that it's better.

Yes, I see those same jagged lines when I try to draw slanted (parallel) lines using a paint app. Doesn't matter if I draw slow or fast, the results look similar.
I've tried to turn off the screen and on, but that doesn't seem to help; neither does grounding my fingers to the frame.
The location of this unresponsive section of screen is about an inch above the bottom of the 1280x800 screen from across left to right just where microSD slot is on the right side.
It seems to also effect the on-screen keypad (the base of the letter row below the numbers) as well as the 4th honeycomb on-screen (menu) button when apps as running and the device is in portrait mode with the camera on the right.
I usually have to hit the key/button again or more firmly to have it register.
I'm going to experiment a bit more to see if I can figure this out, otherwise, I'm going to be returning the device as "defective".
Still waiting for mine to return from RMA, it says 'waiting for spare parts' for 10 days already

Have an android phone? that can be CM7 modded? to HC?
I'm going to use two paint apps (Big Fat Canvas and Scribbler) to help determine what hardware problem exists with my screen and where that unresponsive section really is.
I will attach saved screens (when I am allowed to post links) using those paint apps when drawing, namely with:
Big Fat Canvas
- slanted lines drawn smoothly with my finger tip (moving slow and steady)
- arcs this time (as above)
Scribbler
- slanted lines drawn smoothly with my finger tip (moving slow and steady)
- backslanted lines (as above)
(p.s. for actual screenshots see the images I posted elsewhere using the following weblink)
Getting closer to the actual location of unresponsiveness...
Actually, another tool at my disposal, will be the "Yet Another MultiTouch Tester" app available from the Market.
It shows the longitude (x) and latitude of the touchpoint, and if I slowly drag my fingertip down, micro advancing the number from y=470 to 480, I do note that at y=480, the count JUMPS to y=518 with no in-between!
So this is the spot the my screen is unresponsive and actually sends the wrong info to the screen matrix.
I wish this was software related, but I doubt it. It may have to do with the hardware underneath the screen at that point or "grounding or not" thereto...
My ASUS TF101-B1 was manufactured in April 2011 (per the serial number), but bought a week ago.
Anyone able to reproduce this behaviour? (it's perpendicular to the microSD slot across the whole device from right to left)
Sorry for thinking out loud...
Same problem, different location. Downloaded yamtt too, and for me, IF I leave the tablet untouched on a table and touch only the touchscreen, it loses track of my finger between y=605 and y=672, approximately. All width of the tablet (ie regardless of x) . As soon as I touch the frame with a finger, it can register my touches in the twilight zone. Definitely a hardware-grounding issue, will have to RMA, though I'm in no hurry, the tablet is still very usable and plain amazing...

Oh, I didn't have an Incredible, just saying that it sounds like the same thing based on his description.
I ordered another one from Newegg, returning this one to Walmart, I'm gonna end up saving $27 and don't have to deal with the RMA.
I just got one of these on eBay, thought it was great at first, but then soon realized that I had one of those unresponsive strips on it. Pretty much fully functional, but man is it annoying having to press a key more than once. Trying to get my money back, guy sold it as "new" but won't take it back even though it is defective so I have had to open a PayPal dispute. Pretty crappy experience.

Can you localize that strip using the YAMT app?
When was your TF built i.e. look at your serial number, the first digit is the year, the second the month of manufacture. Mine is B4, so that's 2011 (hex B=11), April (4th month). My serial number ends in the 30,000 range, if that matters!
Hey, I have that problem too, just hover around the microsd card. I found out about that a while ago, did the multitouch tests and drawing, both result in something similar to yours. I tried to turn it off and back on again, seemed to go away. Now I think the problem is back. I haven't tried to turn it off and on yet.

Let me know how it goes. I have the same problem.
mines is like that in the top left where thew volume button etc is but i can live with it
Mine creaks and flexes in the upper right corner area, but I only notice it when I hold it with one hand in that area (not often). Sucks that it's not flawless, but I figured there'd be a few things off at this price point, and luckily this is the only thing so far for me.
Yes, please let us know how it goes because mine is loose on the bottom right corner too. I've concidered just crazy gluing it because I figure its not really a defect since it doesn't directly affect the device.
I get the feeling that the edges of the plastic backing are "floating" and the mounts are farther in because around the edges I can feel the backing flex but the bezel is rigid. Im thinking the plastic backing is just a cover and doesnt provide anything structurally.
Just got mine today and the whole right side is movable to a rather high degree. Gonna see if I can get a replacement since it is a little more than what I am comfortable with.

I have the exact same problem. Its not worth the hasstle of getting it repaired.
I had the same issue on the left top where the volume and power buttons are. I fixed it by applying pressure with my fingers. there has to be a plasic tab or something cheap that holds it in.I know people got it open by running a guitar pick around the bezel.just try and push the edge thats loose till the tab catches it. be careful!
I also noticed that the plastic "bracket" around the rim of the device is loose on the lower right corner very shortly after I got it. Its a little disapointing, but honestly I forgot about it untill just now when I saw the title for this post, so as long as it doesn't get worse I don't really mind.

I and my brother have the same problem, on the left side of tablet, half way down from the top. Mine is not too bad, my brother's is pretty noticeable. He feels it isn't worth returning it, but it's definitely there. As much as I love this thing, I gotta say, quality control on this is horrendous. I expect much more from Asus.
I do not take responsibility for what you do with your stuff, I just did this to fix mine.
This is not a sleep of death fix.
This is a fix for those of us who got to experience cheap product design and our power buttons become almost useless at turning our TF on.
What I did:
I took off the bezel carefully and slowly using a thin guitar pick (after removing the star screws)
I took a typical 3x5 index card and cut an approximate 1x1 millimeter square off the corner.
Carefully, using tweezers, I glued the piece of index card to the light blue button on the bezel, not the rest of the tablet.
I snapped everything back in place carefully and the power button is responsive again!
Again, I am not responsible for you and your tablet. I just did this at 7am since I couldn't sleep.
If there is enough interest I can post pics of the process.
Edit: It also seems to help to let the index card piece dry on and then pull it off to leave a papery residue, it works a little better by softening the button.
Edit 2: I'd like to point out post 5 for a good picture. It seems to just need to be played around with on the thickness level, mine needed very little, yours may need more.
You gotta love when they use cheap buttons on a $400 item... What good is it if you can't turn it on? My buttons still work, but I have read a lot of reports about button issues. Hopefully, they used better buttons on the prime!
Nice. I have the same problem as you did. Can you tell me if the small black plastic piece was attached to the switch on the board inside? I am not 100% sure there is one but the volume buttons have it and I know my power button doesn't. I am thinking it broke off and is missing somewhere inside my bezel as it won't fit properly anymore either. I'm going to rma my tf for other reasons but it would be nice to fix it myself in the mean time.
Thanks for this post. It gives me hope lol.

Yeah my button when new was very easy to operate, even my 3 year old could do it.
As time went by it got harder and harder to turn on. I took the button out and extended with a little piece of plastic. I used an old gift card.
Work great now.
No trouble with my button not working yet, and I've had mine since the spring. The big issue I have with the power button is how close it is to the volume-up button! If I had a nickel for every time I accidentally turned the device off when trying to turn it up, I'd be very rich by now. Very annoying.

As time went by it got harder and harder to turn on. I took the button out and extended with a little piece of plastic. I used an old gift card.
Work great now.

Good pic, that's pretty much exactly how my work around looked.
Would you happen to have a pic of the device rather than the button? I'd like to see how your switch is constructed to see what mine is missing. Thanks.

Sorry I though I had a picture of the the button on the mother board but I guess it didn't save. The power button should look like the two volume button.
interesting...
I returned my Acer Iconia a500 because I realized how cheaply designed the power button was. The a500 tablet on display at Best Buy had a broken power button, and there was tons of others with the same exact problems/concerns. I don't understand why these manufacturers don't learn. I was under the impression that the Transformer was much better built- then I saw this thread. I have an Asus transformer prime on pre-order, but am afraid I will have to RMA the dam thing after a few months for the same problem. I hate apple, IOS, and Itunes, and just wish there was an equivalent 10 inch android tablet that is built just as solid, and wont break down after 3 months from normal use. Will I be ok with the Prime????
My iPod Touch 3G's home button barely works after a year of use... good my Sensation XE is gonna replace it XD. Had my Transformer for nearly 6 months now, no signs of the power button getting any worse... it's something I'm always worried about after my ipod. At least there si a temporary fix for it, I want to make sure my TF lasts at least 2 years, hopefully close to 3.
tno~~
they had to replace all the boards (motherboard, daughterboards) to fix my power button issue.
Have to wonder what you folks are doing with your tablets. We've got two Transformers, used every day since May and June respectively, and neither has the slightest issue with any of the physical buttons.
Thanks guys, I'm gonna try this. I was using piece of pencil eraser in it before I had to turn it in lol.

My power and volume buttons have been loose since the second I pulled it out of the box.

...which makes me wonder if there's a batch problem (although none of the five tablets I've personally bought have had this problem), yours was mistreated while still packaged, or you got a second-hand tablet...
I just got a new TF at Best Buy yesterday, and the power button is loose and hard to press, and the volume button is so sunk in, it's almost impossible to press without trying really hard, and rattles when I type on left side of the screen in landscape. Before I try to exchange it to many times, what should they feel like on a perfect TF? Should they be soft and easy to press, with no looseness?

I dropped my ASUS Transformer on the floor and I had to take the back off (easily done with a thin screwdriver) to bend everything back in place. After putting it back together I had the problem with a loose power button that after while became a stuck button. So I took it apart again, turns out that there is a very very small button on the print board side and the power button has to be adjusted exactly over it and locked in a cavity between the front and back. So if your button is loose it is not properly clicked in the cavity or the cavity has been made to big from the factory
I fixed mine "by accident" when I was prying out the button from the bezel. Under the bezel was another plastic frame that was glued on. When the plastic frame holding the silver button split from the bezel it had more room to move, reaching the pcb button that was just too recessed. Yey
Mine(power button) started to failed on the third day after I purchased it. Then I decided to forget about it and just look for alternatives to power on my transformer without using the power button. so I get the dock, dock seems to be defective, a brand new dock where the touchpad doesn't wake up my transformer(rarely does), this is just one among several issues dock came with. Am I a lucky asus customer or what?
