Noob 2b ... why SD? - Nook Color Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Was waiting for some craigslist possibles to come through, but no luck. Off to B and N soon to bite the $250 bullet.
I'm pretty sure I have no use for stock configuration/apps (actually setting it up for 13 yr old birthday gift). Plan is to go straight through the CM7 on EEMC thread, including partioning. Don't understand why I'd want to fiddle with running off SD?
Any tips or gottchas would be appreciated! Ohh, cana CM 7 NC use a bluetooth GPS? Got an old one from my Treo days...

For me it was to familiarize myself with CM7 and the process of flashing prior to messing around with internal OS partition. I was also concerned that I would have problems restoring to stock if I needed to have the warranty honored. (Obviously these two no longer, since I'm running CM7 on EMMC quite happily). Also, some people don't want to invalidate warranty in case something happens to the Nook hardware and they have to return/exchange it. There are people here who prefer nootered stock over CM7, as well, or want the B&N native reader so run dual boot setup with CM7 on SD and stock as alternate boot on EMMC.

If you get a blue dot nook and intend on installing CM7 on emmc, then you do need to do the repartition. I've heard various info on whether or not people with blue dot Nooks can boot from SD (haven't kept up with that thread), but if you are able to boot off SD on a blue dot Nook you shouldn't have to do the repartition unless you are installing to EMMC.
My nook was not a blue dot.

Probably too little too late, but if you get your NC from Best Buy or Walmart, you stand a better chance of getting an older device without the blue dot.

Thought about that, but didn't think the partition would be to bad. As it turns out went to B and N and she was pretty up on "if you're a techie." When she handed it to me, I said so this is the blue dot? She said yeah we have some of the old ones if you want... so I'll skip that first re-partition step.
Also got to play with the new I ink, touch screen, reader. Nice! Interesting their pricing is $139 compared to a Kindle I saw at Wmart for $112. Side note, I did get a 3G kindle, new from craig's list for $118. Thinking that will be the go to device for "reading" especially at pool or beach.
I asked what the price of the NC used to be, and she said it's always been $250, but they where able to keep it up because of the Froyo update! So maybe I should have got a discount!!!

Wish I had known about the Best Buy/Walmart connection

Origional Nook not color question

My hubby just bought me an orgional nook (not the color one) off off a site like woot.com. can it be rooted? Can cm7 or any roms be put on it?
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
From everything I've heard, no. B&N locked down the original Nook to prevent rooting.
Yes, it can be rooted... not sure about what else can be done with it though. Check nookdevs.com for more info (it seems to be down at the moment).
You can google nook devs and click the "Cached" link next to the results to see the site in the meantime.

I am running the Prime 2.1.1 ROM and it's good. I have had trouble with the Revolution HD ROM (didn't restore apps automatically, Market crashes, some apps are shown as not compatible etc.). I will wait until the first ICS ROMs come out before I try anything new (e.g. the KRAKD ROM looks promising).
So maybe i play honeycomb and wait for the ICS roms to drop then cause that works

I have tried revolver, prime, and revolution HD for me revolution is the most stable and the battery is amazing on it. the only thing I don't like is how really stock it is. Revolver is really customizable rom you can do alot tweets but the battery drains fast. Well prime, I was getting alot of fc so I didn't play with it to much.

First off, make sure that you always make a backup of what you have working on the tablet. This will save you much frustration if something goes wrong. Nandroid backups are the ones that will restore a whole ROM for you. As for backing up apps with data, you can use Titanium Backup (requires root).
The two main firsts are that you should get it rooted (very easy now) and install CWM (Clockwork Recovery Mod). CWM will allow you to flash ROMs, make backups of the ROM itself and handle various memory functions.
Read through the Stickies in the Android Dev section, they will tell you all information you need to know.
As mentioned above, if you run into any kind of issue, before you post, use the search function and see if it is something that has been asked and answered before. If you are following the steps to whatever you are doing and you get stuck, chances are good someone else has done the same thing and gotten help with it.
Another thing to note is when you choose a ROM, look through its feature list, and if available, the bug list. Looking through both of those should aid you in deciding if that specific ROM or Kernel is something you want to use. If you get as far as flashing Kernels, make sure it is one that is compatible with the ROM you are using, otherwise the tablet probably won't boot and you'll have to flash a Kernel known to work with whichever ROM you chose.
Read thru the stickies above.
First thing you'll need to do is check the serial number on it and make sure you even have the choice of rooting it. AFAIK, most serials after the B60 series have a locked bootloader that hasn't been cracked yet. I hope I'm wrong, but I haven't read anything to the contrary yet.

Anyways, back on topic...I use the latest PRIME! and I rarely have issues. Good luck when you get it!

Anyway, I would recommend getting the dock. Sometimes it is nice to have a physical keyboard, plus the additional battery adds hours of use time.

Do you have TWRP installed ??? If you have just go to amazon website to download the ROM. Rename it to *.zip then copy to your sd and install, but remember to wipe your device by 3 options on the top (sry I forgot the name)
Here is a video on what to do.....

Yes. The standard method of updating completely reformats the system and overwrites everything. No root, no TWRP, No FIREFIREFIRE. You should just wind up with the stock launcher.
thanks a ton guys!!! takin it back today... gonna get the asus memo 7 in. it has the tegra 3 and expandable storage starting at 16 gb for $249. coming out in a couple months.

If you still have the triangle, that is FireFireFire, not TWRP.
If you put the downloaded file into the /sdcard/kindleupdates
And then used Settings -> Devices and then Update
After it was complete and it reboots, there should be No FireFireFire and TWRP as the update formats the /system directory where these were stored.
What's the use of getting something if it will have little dev support ;p
You can always bet the Kindle Fire will have dev support. It's the most affordable/popular android tablet out right now.
Now back to stock. Had an unnerving .acore error with no true solution but return back to square one again. Every twrp restore turned to be identical to to one trying to leave? Wish I could sell this.
Happy you can return yours.
I'll give you a hundred for it. A long as it's back to stock.
People complain that manufacturers are making it harder to unlock devices but after reading these forums, can you really blame them? I wonder what percentage of Android device returns are because of user error.

Bricked devices would not exist if manufacturers unlocked their hardware. How many computers get bricked because someone messed up installing linux? Oh that's right, zero.

[Q] Incentives for stock Nook

Are there any incentives for dual-booting stock and a CM firmware?
Is there anything stock that the official B&N app can't do?
I have a feeling I would never even boot into it, and don't want to waste my time

The official android B&N Nook reader app cannot read interactive children's books. Only the version on the stock ROM can read them. That is because those books are really interactive applications that look like books but only run on stock. That and worrying about warranty issues are the main reasons folks leave stock on emmc and run CM on SD.

Then there is literally no incentive for me to dual boot... I bought my Nook solely for the purpose of the tablet modification... I ran stock firmware for about 20 minutes in total, right when I took it out of the box!
Thanks for the reply!
If you registered your stock software, de-register it before you flash the new CM rom. That way if you ever want to sell or give away the Nook to someone else, it is unincumbered to your account. You can still put the nook app on CM and register that.
I got it for news aggregation. Magazines and the Sunday paper that you can't get on the app. If you want a tablet, kindle and nex7 are better. I'm a B&N member and use it.

That was one of the biggest features people were complaining about when they were running the Android app, vs. the Nook Color app. Haven't tried any of the magazines myself other than a preview of NatGeo they sent out this Summer, but it was nice to see the option!
To the OP, the biggest things I miss are the free reading of anything from the eBook store, where you could sit inside a B/N Cafe and read for an hour. Also, they used to send out freebie coupons which you'd then show to the barista, such as a free frappacino or large-sized latte. Not sure if they do that anymore since I rooted, and eventually changed up the ROM completely.

Mine updated and lost root. Haven't gotten around to doing it again. But yeah, when I got it I was a member of their club. Got discounts on everything, spent alot of time there. City I was in had no local coffee shop, so I went to b&n all the time. Starbucks coupons made it worth it. But I don't get the expensive drinks anyways. Unless I get a gift card. I mainly drink black eyes or espresso shots. That's normal price coffee.

Idiotic problem

Hey all, I bought a rooted/CM modded Nook Color and honestly wasn't digging the performance so I decided to sell it. In a very stupid fashion I went and did a factory reset of my personal info through the normal means inside of Android, not considering the implications.
For an hour now I've been stuck on a screen with the angry looking blue dude with the arrow around him and "Cyanogenmod" beneath that in white text. The arrow is moving and stopping intermittently.
Should I hard boot somehow? Should I pull the SD card and let it boot into normal nook mode? Should I let it sit and do its thing? I'd like to get it back to where it was with Android on so it'll be more salable.
Edit: powered down and powered up; went into Android just fine. Only problem is that it did not actually reset to factory settings and is still logged in as me. How can I clear it for safe sale?

All of your personal data should be on the SD, so just remove and sell it without the SD. Be sure to erase and deregister the stock OS so that it is released from the B&N servers so the next person can register it.
