Ok, I installed Clockwork a while ago, then removed it and unrooted (I no longer needed root access, and I'm not doing any image flashing or anything that requires it). But after removing clockwork, it still boots to that first when I reboot my phone. In case if I ever have to take my phone in to VZ or something, how do I stop it from booting to that? I'm guessing it's not just a normal app, since I've reset to factory since then to try to resolve another issue, and it's still appearing, so I'm guessing it installed itself into the ROM.
I basically rooted my phone originally to install Titanium Backup before doing the factory reset, then I was thinking of trying some custom ROM's, but I decided not to (other than a performance increase, there's nothing else I really care about right now that custom ROM's would provide). So I installed Clockwork Mod and everything else RLM703 listed (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=814299&highlight=guide), then removed everything after I decided not to mod it.
I can understand your concern on the not flashing, however if you do not flash i think you also still have the Superuser app (even ifyou dont have root rights) that itself would also void your warranty. The easiest, fastest, and safest way is to Flash it using the Method below.
Go To (droid-life .com /2010/09/21/how-to-return-droid-x-back-to-android-2-1/)
((**As a new user i cant post outside links so delete the spaces after life com in order to get the proper working link.))
**
You will download 2 things. The SBF for 2.1 (Which afterwards you can use OTA to reupdate to 2.2).
RSD Lite: This program is used by Motorola to flash phones so its not some unstable application that will mess up.
After you install the drivers, THEN install RSD Lite. You must Run RSD Lite as an administrator. Shift Click RSD Lite and choose Run as Administrator (Even if you are on an administrative account). Afterwards you just navigate from RSD lite to where you have your SBF Saved, Boot your phone into bootloader, then press start. Takes about 5 minutes and you are back to a brand new Droid X.
Like i said i understand your concern on this, and im deeply sorry if you get a rare case and it does decide to mess up, but i just flashed my phone 3 times yesterday using this method and never had a problem.
Hope this helps!
Ok, I know I created a backup through ROM Manager before I stalled Clockword Mod Recovery, but now I can't find it... However, I've been having some minor issues with my phone ever since I updated to 2.2, so maybe I'll just find a stock SBF and flash back to that... That link I posted has a droid x guide, with a link to a stock 2.2 SBF, so I can just grab that and flash it tonight or something. Or even just download it at home and keep it in case if I need it down the road...
Hey guys! Thought it was weird that no one has done this yet so here it goes!
**FIRST WARNINGS!!**
1) I do not take ANY responsibility for anything that happens to your phone, contract, etc, etc.
2) I do not take create for any material posted here nor do I take credit for the download links! SUPER PROPS to p3droid & Black hat team for those.
3) Make Sure you know what you are doing BEFORE your root / SBF your phone, as I am not usually on much during the day to answer question (do to my job).
** END OF WARNINGS**
So on with the awesomeness that is GINGERBREAD! This How To shows you how to get from basically any rom to Rooted (supposedly deodexed) Official .596 Gingerbread from Motorola & Verizon!
First!! for those of you that upgraded to Leaked Versions of Gingerbread:
1)You need to check both your Gingerbread Version & Radio Versions.
---- To find your versions go settings > about phone > System Version/Baseband Version ----
If your Gingerbread Version is ANY of the following: (588/591/595)
&
If your Radio (baseband) Version ends with: 12P
Then Follow 2b) OTHERWISE FOLLOW 2a) !!
Second!! If You are on a Rooted Froyo Device go to 2c)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
2a) SBFing / Back to 2.2 Froyo:
If you are here that means you don't have the requirements to just "update" via bootstrapper to get to Gingerbread I know that sucks BUT there is a WAY!
A) First thing to do for this is to backup ALL your apps!! That's because all your data will be deleted as you will need to be going back to default froyo.
B) You will need to SBF back to Default 2.2 Froyo now. For those of you who don't know what SBF is: think of it as a Recovery process.
ANYWAY back on topic; If you do NOT KNOW how to SBF, then please follow how to do it Here You'll also have to download the default Froyo sbf file found there too. **Please make sure to read through everything in that post before trying to do it!!
Now After your SBF says it's at 100% (and it reboots your phone) Some Droid's perform differently than others. Here is what I mean; in MY personal case the phone rebooted right up into froyo. However some other people's didn't - it was stuck on the red eye logo screen.
If this happens to you:
1) Pull out the battery
2) unplug your usb cord (you can now quit RSD Lite - Don't worry about the warning as it told me the same thing)
3) put the battery back in
4) hold the power and home buttons to get into recovery mode on your phone
5) when the "!" sign shows up click on your search button, and scroll down to "factory reset / cache wipe" click ok then reboot. (this will get you into froyo)
C) Now that you are back to Default Froyo, You'll need to root it again with "Z4Root" which is at the bottom of this post.
I assume since you already rooted before you know how to...
D) After Rooting You'll need to install a copy of Droid 2 Bootstrap which can ALSO be found at the bottom of this post. If you already have Droid X Bootstrapper GET RID OF IT. Because it does NOT work in Gingerbread and for this process, but Droid 2 Bootstrapper does.
After installing Droid 2 Bootstrapper, you'll need to download both of the following files (part 1 & Part 2) and put them on your phone's SD Card:
Part 1:
Mirror 1
Mirror 2
mirror 3
Part 2:
Mirror 1
Mirror 2
Mirror 3
Now that your have both files downloaded I would advise you to rename the files to "2.3.340.MB810.Verizon.en.US-Part1" & "2.3.340.MB810.Verizon.en.US-Part2" This is because when you finally get into bootstrapper you'll know which part you are getting ready to install!
E) NOW ITS TIME TO GET SOME YUMMY GINGERBREAD!! Please PLEASE read everything before doing anything after this point!!
1) First get into bootstrap recovery
2) Go to: Install update off SDCard > Pick part1 > Click ok!
3) DO NOT EXIT RECOVERY!!!! If you do you could brick your Droid!!
4) After it installs part 1, go back down to Install update off SDCard > Pick Part2 This time > Click OK!!
Now at this point you can do 1 of 2 things:
1) You can restart your phone (as I did - which started up the first time)
2) You can go back to the main menu and "Factory reset / Wipe data"
** Please note that Option 2 was NOT tested by me, so I can not say if it works or not **
Your phone should have restarted and is now in Android 2.3.3596 CONGRATS!
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
2b) Upgrading Directly to Gingerbread
Congrats!! You are part of the few that are able to directly upgrade through bootstrap to Gingerbread!!
1) FIRST Back up all of your Apps, as this update my delete them.
2) Grab Droid 2 bootstrap from the bottom of this post and install it since the Droid X Bootstrapper doesnt work with Gingerbread.
3) Grab the Update below:
Mirror 1
Mirror 2
Mirror 3
Mirror 4
4) Just install as you normally would a ROM, and restart. This Should get you into Rooted, Deodexed, Official .596 Gingerbread
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
2c) Time to go back to default!
Alright so you are rooted on Froyo.. Well it's time to go back to your original backup of Verizon's DEFAULT 2.2 that SHOULD have been your first backup. Now if you are reading this and you don't have an original backup, you'll have to either find one for bootstrap, or go to 2a) and follow those instructions
1) Bootstrap Back to your original "Verizon Default 2.2"
2) You'll need to install a copy of Droid 2 Bootstrap which can be found at the bottom of this post.

Your phone should have restarted and is now in Android 2.3.3596 CONGRATS!
Hope this helps those in need! I know I needed a tutorial like this, but unfortunately, I had to get bits and chunks off of about 10 different forums... so HAVE FUN!!
Stuck. Thanks!
Why do we need to SBF to original Froyo if we are running stock rooted Froyo that has never had a ROM installed or anything? I could never find an answer to that, thanks for the instructions, they are a lot clearer than the ones on Droid World.
Sent from my DROIDX using XDA App
Nevermind, just did the 2 part install without SBF'ing and it worked like a charm. Nothing like jumping in with both feet!
I'd give it a try before SBF'n

I used the 2 file method yesterday to go from CM7 Nightlys back to GB rooted. No issues. I used Droid 2 bootstrapper to flash the 2 files (I know, not recommended by the CM7 guys). I first tried to perform a restore directly back to GB but that failed due to the kernel differences. But then when I flashed the two files, my data from the attempted GB restore was still there so it all worked out in the end.

THe quick answer is you never needed to. If you follow my directions to 2c) then you see that you need to bootstrap back to default (I assumed that anyone on an already rooted default froyo would just skip this step ) then install the update...
So just for future peoples:
If you are already on the default STOCK motorola 2.2 system and are rooted, just go straight to updating your bootstrapper, and then to the update.
I've had a few days now with this new stock rom, and I am mainly very impressed! Motorola really did bump up the speed, and now I have a lot less freezes / failing apps. I have noticed that the camera is still just a bit buggy, but other than that very good and stable.
Can't wait to see what kind of roms people build off of this one makes me extremely excited just thinking about it... EIther that or the unlocking of the motorola bootloader.
Yes GB is a lot faster and smoother. My only complaint is the keyboard, it seems less responsive and the keys seem smaller. I've had to correct a lot of typing since the upgrade, other than that it's great.

????????
Thanks! Worked great until I noticed a problem...
I started out with a rooted FroYo Droid X and this is what I did step by step for folks like me.
I installed the Droid 2 Bootstrap attached to the original post.
Saved the part 1 and part 2 files in the root of the SD Card (Phone Files).
Started the Bootstrap app.
In the Boostrap app I clicked the Bootstrap Recovery button first and then clicked Success.
I then clicked the Reboot Recovery button and let the phone reboot into recovery.
Now in recovery you have to use the volume up/down buttons to move around on the screen and then use the camera button to select something.
I moved to Install Zip from SD Card and selected it.
I moved to the part 1 file (it's the first one in the list) and selected it.
I moved to the Install Zip from SD Card again and and selected it.
I moved to the part 2 file (it's the second one in the list) and selected it.
After all this you should be back at the main recovery screen again and you should have Reboot System Now as an option. Select it to reboot your phone.
When your phone comes back up you should be good to go. I did notice some of the game icons weren't showing up correctly and so I rebooted the phone again (normally by turning it off and then back on) and then everything showed up fine again.
Like the original poster I didn't wipe my data or cache and everything seems to work fine and I didn't need to reinstall all of my apps or anything.
Again, thanks to the original poster!
[Edit] Had to SBF back to FroYo. After playing with this Gingerbread update for a while I found that my wireless tether apps (Wireless Tether and Barnacle Wireless Tether) were not working and complaining about the phone being in a weird state and also that WiFi Manager was interfering with the wireless tether apps. Since I use my phone as a hotspot a lot I decided to go back to FroYo until this release has baked a bit.
Heck yes, man. This is great work. Definitely will be checking back to this thread to see what is going on with rooting in Gingerbread.
edit: By the way, in Android Market, I see two apps. One is name "Droid 2 Recovery Bootstrap" and the other is named "Droid X Recovery Bootstrap." Both apps are published by ClockworkMod.
Q1: ClockworkMod is a person, right?
Q2: Why does the original poster recommend using Droid 2 Recovery Bootstrap instead of Droid X Recovery Bootstrap?
This is all fine and dandy, but is anyone actually working on a root option for OTA. I have grown tired of SBFing, I just want root. I do not have the know how to find little niches to put root in to my phone, I depend on much smarter people for that, please do not become complacent with this option, help those of us who want root, but either do not have time, do not wish, or just are to afraid to try this method with a simpler way. Thank you
Zues
yes, it is a slight inconvenience, but i dont see any merit to your complaint. You only have to sbf once then flash the pre-rooted gingerbread OTA rom. it's really simple.
1. sbf to froyo 2.3.340
2. root with z4root
3. install droid 2 boostrapper
4. boot into recovery using bootstrapper and install the 2 part zip files.
Done

1) No, ClockworkMod is a group of people working together.
2) I believe the original post said something about how the Bootstrap for Droid X doesn't work with Gingerbread but the Droid 2 Bootstrap attached to the original post does and that is why the post said to use it instead of the Droid X one.

Ok, I have a few answers for a few people:
sjmoreno: The first is about the wireless Tethering: I have the original "wireless tethering for root" available in the android marketplace (although verizon probably has killed it on their droid's so look for it online. I have that, and it works all day long without giving me any complaints.
Second: VZyx: Best way to root is via z4root on Froyo 2.2 if you need help with this go to the topic entitled "Droid X for noobs" to see how to do it.
heyandy889: No need to go to the android marketplace, just grab the .apk that's at the bottom of this post. The reason why you don't want droid X bootstrapper is because for some reason, (most likely because it's older) it doesn't work in gingerbread but droid 2 bootstrapper does. If you ever use droid X bootstrapper in gingerbread you have a possibility of bricking your phone... that and it won't do anything.

It has been reported by several people that Droid X Bootstraper can work but you have to turn off USB debugging in /Settings/Applications/ Development
I would still not trust it. Better to just have droid 2 strapper

shukero,
It has been reported in several sites that the Gingerbread update from Verizon has an added software blocker that disables non-Verizon wifi apps from working. So I find it working for you to be surprising to say the least.
In the thread in this section titled "wireless tether" there is a post with a link to another site where a user named wugfresh has a very nice post about the problem and has a solution to it as well. After trying his patch to get wifi tethering working again on this Gingerbread rom I can report it works GREAT.
So, thank you for this rom but without wugfresh's wifi tether fix I'd still be using the FroYo rom.
Thought some other users of this rom and those that use Wireless Tether for Root will find this post interesting.
.596 ROM's deodexed?
Are these .596 rom's provided are they Deodexed by chance?
I am on the .596 root made by p3droid.
I am wondering if I could reinstall the 2 parts to get back to a stock .596 root with all the apps back on. Every once in awhile my phone will reboot and apps will just force close then reopen with no questions.

Why are you interested in a deodexed rom?
Here is the link to the new update to install just rename to update.zip place on the root of your sdcard then reboot recovery and install update.zip
http://www.4shared.com/file/ov_2h3JM/Blur_Version2320A955VerizonenU.html
Why would someone need to download this, shouldn't everyone be able to update over the air.
FYI really like 2.3 runs very nice on droid2
To answer your question, I would. I recently left verizon and now I cannot get the OTA update. I still use my Droid 2 for android development. I just don't use it for a phone.
That said. I can't use the above update. I SBFed my phone back to stock Froyo System version 2.3.20, installed z4root to load clockworkmod Droid 2 recovery, and finally attempted to flash the above file from the SD card. I get the following error:
assert failed: getprop("ro.product.device") == "cdma_droid2" || getprop("ro.build.product") == "cdma_droid2"
blah blah blah
(Status 7)
From the failed assertions I'm assuming this update doesn't recognize my phone as a Droid 2 and refuses to install the update. Does anyone know why that might be? Like I said I restored to stock before attempting this.
Wait a second. The file linked is called Blur_Version.2.3.20.A955.Verizon. That's the stock Froyo version. Is it called that because you need to be on that version or is this just an older file? I'm confused. Is this or isn't this the just released Gingerbread update?
It's an oddly named file, but the last time I saw that one linked it was the OTA. I still feel one is better off SBFing to stock and downloading it that way.
What's going on, I was following the steps on theunlockr but when I tried to extract the OG firmware my laptop said it was probably damaged, any way I can get the firmware somewhere else? I am running on Fission right now and want to go back to stock so I can scoop this update, it looks pretty nice. Please help me out if you can, thank you.
If you want to go back to stock to force the update the right way, the above file won't help you.
1. Get RSD Lite http://www.multiupload.com/HL0ZAL9GK8
2. Get Moto Drivers http://dl.dropbox.com/u/7632904/USB_Drivers_bit_4.7.1.zip
3. Get Froyo SBF http://bit.ly/dir7fq
Install the Moto Drivers on your pc, then boot into your bootloader and connect via usb. Then run RSD and load the SBF file. Once you complete that, reboot the phone and go to settings > phone info > check for updates. The new GB should be waiting for you, all official like.
Good looking out fam, will check in when finished!
Despite the odd name it is the correct file. But do not use CWM or bootstrap to flash it! Rename it to update.zip on root of sd card then use Stock recovery to flash it.

You're right it worked! I'm finally gingerbreaded. Thanks so much everyone.
Hello again, so my phone is just stuck on the Droid loading screen (Droid followed by the red symbol) I have no idea what to do although I followed the steps stated above.
**EDIT**
So I was able to fix this problem by wiping the cache as well as my data, thank you all!

I tried this exactly as stated and I cant get me droid 2 to be seen in the RSD. I get a drive letter when I reboot to recovery but nothing shows in RSD. Any ideas? I tried wiping data and cache and did a factory reset still nothing.
Back to a rom manager backup from yesterday atm.
Make sure your phone is in PC Mode (and possibly Debugging Mode) so RSD can recognize it.

Must have missed it the first time I read the thread I will try to install it as update.zip through the standard recovery and see if that works.
Ok I was able to get this on my phone with RSD the trick is to have your phone in PC mode and NOT to reboot it yourself the program will do it automatically. I got my phone updated but now it wont even give me the option to download the update OTA.
Yea I could've told you not to manually reboot. So you did a SBF to 2.3.2 and went into Settings > About > and System Updates and got nothing?
Correct I redid the sbf twice more to make sure it took.. when I go to settings > about > and system updates its greyed out.
UPDATE: I dededeee it, forgot to reactivate my phone after sbf the 3rd time. trying the OTA now
Ok phone is upgraded and rerooted.
1. sbf with RSD 3 times till it took
2. upgrade with OTA
3. rerooted with One Button Root
4. replaced progs with titanium
phone is fast right now, lovin it.
Glad you FINALLY got it working. Try out CM7 for GB. Do a backup before doing so and see if you like it. If not you can always restore back.
I think I may have done something wrong. My phone works but it restarts randomly, is there a way I can get it to stop this? Should I start from scratch or just get a different ROM?
Ok... I have also used Z4root. I got the update, it failed. I unrooted with Z4root. Re-downloaded the update, it failed. I tried to reinstall the kindle and blockbuster app. Re-downloaded the update, it failed. I reset to factory. Re-downloaded the update, it failed. Downloaded root checker, ran root checker, it said that I am not rooted. Re-downloaded the update, it failed.

Have I done something wrong??? I don`t understand why I can not get the update. Please help.
This process should un root and put you back on stock Froyo. This is a complete factory wipe, so if you're wanting to back anything up, do it before any of these following steps. Once complete, go to Settings > About Phone > Check for Updates and report back.
WARNING: Only run the first set of instructions, do not flash the Gingerbread leak, you can get the official after running RSDlite.
To get back to stock: http://www.mydroidworld.com/forums/...id-2-gingerbread-2-3-3-release-prerooted.html
1. Grab the SBF File
You must start the process with your phone running the official 2.3.20. If you have already upgraded to gingerbread grab this 2.3.20 sbf file .... Download
2. Grab RSDlite
You must use RSDLite to use the sbf file from step 1 .... RSDLite
3. Grab the Drivers Drivers ....Download now
4. Run RSDLite and sbf your phone back to 2.3.20
Didn't work
I was unable to get the OTA to work. I was rooted using OneClickRoot and unable to update like everyone else (FAILED). I tried to sideload from a post on another page, but that didn't work either (not even sure that was the correct file). So I followed the direction as mentioned above, SBFing to a stock 2.3.20, but only after I did a complete wipe of the phone. Now that I have SBFed I don't have any phone signal and cant get it to work with anything I have tried. I don't want to go crazy trying stuff and brick my phone. So at this point, how do I get my phone working again. Screw GB for now, I just need my phone to work. HELP!
It's pretty hard to brick a D2 unless you happen to flush it down the toilet. SBF again to 2.2, do NOT root. Go to the about phone menu and run the OTA update to GB. After that run the one click root for Droid 3.
working
I don't know why, but after re-installing (SBF) 2.3.20 the phone decided to stop working. I thought it could have been a bad SBF file, and it could have been. The step that seemed to work was wiping the phone after the install. Once I did this step, of course you have to set the phon up again, but it prompted me to "Activate" the phone. So I hit activate and the phone called Verzon and run a programming function. Once that completed the phone worked fine. I am currently downloading the OTA, so here's hoping!
I did actually get the sideload (update.zip) file to work before going back to 2.3.20 as mentioned above, but I still didn't have phone. At this point I was going to do a wipe but could not get the phone to enter recovery, I'm thinking there must be some other method that's different to get it there. If anyone know, that would be good info to have.
Still downloading.....
I believe if you dial *228 it will activate for you.
I am also unable to get the OTA GB update to work. It gets all the way to re-boot and about 1/3 of progress bar after accepting to install the 4.5.601.A955. Just like mentioned in one of these other posts. I have tried everything - uninstalling and reinstalling z4 root, deleting SU, Bootstrap recovery, root explorer etc. All of which were not done properly or in the right order. I have been working on this the last 2 days. Yesterday, I even called tech support at Verizon, they helped me do a factory reset, and when it failed again, offered to send me a new D2 because my phone is still under warranty and won't accept the update, so I took their offer.
But then I got nervous because my clockwork mod was still showing up on power up, so I finally figured out how to remove that. I have SBF'd at least a couple of times since I got clockwork removed and update still fails.
My memory is not to good, but I think I first rooted in late Dec 2010. It seems like the 2.3.2 OTA update came out in Jan or Feb 2011. I don't believe I had to unroot to get that update. My current System Version is 2.3.20 A955 - Android version 2.2, and that is what it goes to after doing the factory reset on the phone. The Verizon tech didn't act like it should have gone back to an earlier version.
I have only one other issue - a week ago the phone took a bath when I fell in the water. Dried it off quickly and the only thing wrong other than barely-noticeble water damage to the display, is that the power button now requires exactly 3 pushes every time to boot the display to the unlock screen.
Sorry for the long post. Here are my questions: I no longer have clockwork at power up, it boots like a normal out of the box D2, am I missing something? Will Verizon be able to tell that I had rooted my phone? Could the water and resulting power button issue be the cause of it not accepting the update? TIA
Im having a similar problem. I can get the ota update just fine, but it will install aboutt 1/3 of it and just stop and reboot. All i did was root. I unrooted and same thing happpens. Downloaded this thing like 6 times already and same thing each time. Although a long time ago i did uninstall nfs, blockbuster, and i think kindle but i cant remember...
Are you doing a full factory wipe back to 2.3.2 when you do this or are you just "wipe data/factory reset" in recovery? Because if you only do that in recovery you're just wiping data. There's another thread here with a .zip you can run in stock recovery, not clockwork. Rename to update.zip, put it on the main directory of SD, boot holding X and power, then press the volume buttons. Hit install update.zip.
On the D2 - I am doing Settings<Privacy<Factory Data Reset<Reset Phone< Confirm.
How do you get into stock recovery? Do I need to be rooted again?
I would imagine but I don't know. Boot up holding the X key and power, should bring you to a droid guy with a !. Hit the volume buttons, if you get a blue and red recovery menu, you're in. It's not going to ask you for superuser so it's worth a shot at least.
Thanks for your help idefiler6. I got into stock recovery, but when I did the update it also failed - some logwrapper error. I am now having difficulty getting back in to stock recovery.
I had deleted system/bin/hijack and renamed system/bin/logwrapper.zip to system/bin/logwrapper to remove or stop the clockwork mod from booting up, which did make clockwork go away using Root Explorer. I found a post here to do this droidxforums.com/forum/droid-x-help/22080-im-begging-help-please-help-3.html
Anyway, my new phone is supposed to get here Wed. So I guess I'll just take my chances of whether Verizon cares or figures out I had rooted my phone. Regardless, the power button failing to work properly, should qualify for warranty coverage.
Crossing my fingers for you.
im getting mine replaced under warranty due to it cannot install the update no matter, how many times we have wiped it with tech support.
I also was very lucky since I got my 2nd warranty phone right before the one year mark so it extened the phone i have now another 90 days.
Problems all around
I too am having the OTA update problem. Downloads fine and gets about 1/3 of the way before rebooting and giving me an update failed message.
Current Device info:
D2G
System Version: 2.4.330.A956
Android Version: 2.2
Unrooted using Z4Root
Current logwrapper from November 12, 2010. No hijack or recovery .bin files in place.
I have tried RSDlite 4.8 and 4.9 using two separate downloads of the 2.3.20.A955 SBF from the link provided in this thread. Motorola Drivers are up to date and no errors are showing up in my Device Manager on my W7 PC.
The error I get when flashing in RSD is;
critical error febe 0047
Any thoughts? I'd like to try Gingerbread but haven't had any luck no matter what I try.
When in Doubt Go Linux!
Here's how I fixed the problem. I'm not a big Windows guy and the issues I was having were frustrating me because I had to update drivers, download new versions, blah, blah, blah.
I found a solution that allowed me to use my Fedora OS and it took me 10 minutes, no hassles, no errors. The incredible thing is, it kept ALL of my data, apps and settings on the phone! I had to upgrade from 2.29 (the flash from below) to 2.30 OTA and then to Gingerbread OTA Awesome stuff.
Here are the steps provided by hwertz from modmymobile.
"Download sbf_flash (just goggle it)
Download DROID2WE_X6_2.4.29_FULL.sbf.zip" (google this too)
(You would download these with firefox, make sure Firefox saves in the directory "Download".)
Open a terminal (Applications->Terminal)
Plug in your phone via USB, turn it off. Flip open the keyboard and turn it on WHILE holding down the up arrow. You'll see this screen with blocky white text, like right away -- it doesn't even get to the Motorola logo."
-----
OK, so in the terminal, you will
type "cd Download"
(If you saved somewhere else, cd to there. For instance if you saved to "Desktop" you would "cd Desktop" instead.)
Type "gunzip sbf_flash.gz"
If this gives an error, it's ok, it means you already had "sbf_flash" instead of "sbf_flash.gz"
type in "chmod +x sbf_flash"
Type in "unzip DROID2WE_X6_2.4.29_FULL.sbf.zip"
Then type in "sudo ./sbf_flash DROID2WE_X6_2.4.29_FULL.sbf"
If you are running a "real" copy of Ubuntu this'll ask for your password. The LiveCD has no password so it won't.
That's it! It'll appear to do nothing for a few seconds while it loads the flash, then it'll start flashing your phone which takes 5 or 10 minutes.
Good luck!
Thank you hwertz and thank you Linux!

I don't particularly know how much of a difference this is, but the D2G and the D2 are two different phones, everything I have posted is for the OG D2. Might want to check the threads in the D2G forum because the files you need to SBF must differ in some way. I could be wrong...
that would explain it

That makes sense. Either way, I'm happy as can be and in love with my phone all over again. GB is fast and smooth on my D2G and after gaining root access again last night all my SU apps are back in working order.
Droid 2 updated
I had to revert back to stock 2.3.20 using the RSDLite flashing method, I let it do its thing, then performed a factory reset.
Powered the phone on, activated it, then just downloaded the OTA update over wi-fi to make it faster, installed like a charm, then ran the rooting utility.
Phone is rooted, deBloated, and rockin steady already.
Gotta say, I love my D2 again.
A955 & A957 Gingerbread sbf
On September 15th an official Gingerbread sbf was released from Motorola for the Droid 2 (not the Global). Here are the exact file names in case anyone has access:
A955:

A957 (R2D2):

I have an Acer 500a I just bought off carigslist. Initially I thought it would be fine but then I realized I was inheriting someone elses problems. I hope someone may be able to help.
Within the first few hours I was noticing google Play crashed a number of times and struggled to update from Market. Somehow the update went through but now there is a system update that won't go through. I'm able to down load it and when i restart the computer to complete installation the screen goes black and says: booting recovery kernel in the corner. I then see a picture of an android and a load bar which after 2-4 seconds the android is on his back and an exclaimation mark is coming out of his belly.
My android version is 3.2
Kernel version
2.6.36.3+
Build number
Acer_a500_7.006.01_COM_GEN2
I'm pretty sure its rooted and i think that might be why its not playing nice with google market and system updates. I called the old owner and explained the problem and he just said he had it rooted and he thought he unrooted it. There is an ap called superuser in aps. (although if it were rooted would'nt I be able to uninstal some of thecrap software it comes with like GOLF HD? -- it won't let me).
The system update is for Acer_a500_7.014.01_COM_GEN2 8.88mb
My problem is all of the force closes I'm getting and the inability to update the system. Any thoughts? I don't have a usb cord to connect it to a desktop either =(
I am a bit out of practice, but...
Should be pretty simple to fix. From what I am seeing, you are running a stock rom. Just because the superuser.apk is installed on the system does not mean it is rooted, but it probably is.
Hit the market, grab "Root Checker" - simple tiny program to let you know for sure if your tab is rooted or not.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=burrows.apps.rootchecker&hl=en
From what I understand - automatic system updates will fail when trying to apply them to a rooted or modded system. Probably why you cannot auto-update.
My advice at this point would be to:
1) Since you just bought it, just do a factory wipe on it. That will remove all the stuff the prior owner had running on it and will result in a unrooted tab that should be able to get auto updates without a problem.
2) Un-Root it. Once the tablet is unrooted, the system should update without any issue.
As for your Play Store issues - I have never heard of or personally seen any issues caused with installing apps from the store on a rooted device. I have seen a few apps that will refuse to run on a rooted device - but that does not sound like your problem.
I would go with option 1 - just factory wipe the thing. Prior owner may have made tons of changes to the OS that we will never know about, and may have handed you a unstable system. Start fresh. Wipe it out.
Hope this helps you out! Let me know if I can answer any questions.
k thank you so much for the quick reply! I downloaded the root checker and it Is rooted. I did a factory wipe as found in the settings privacy tab when I bought it. That factory reset did not unroot and only cleaned out some of the aps on the device. Is there a better or more surefire way to unroot it? If I reset with the volume down key will it hard reset it?
Thank you for you help!
Draight
Okay.
I am about a year out of practice with my a500 - but from what I am think, if a factory reset still results in a rooted device - the prior user installed a stock ROM that comes pre-rooted.
I highly doubt being rooted is causing the issues you are running into.
At this point if you just want to get back to stock you can probably just install the Acer Recovery Manager from the market and use it to reflash a stock unrooted ROM. Or I see a few guides about how to manually restore back to stock over in the dev section for the a500.
Others will correct me if I am wrong, but I think Acer Recovery Manager should take care of your problem.
Hope this helps!
(Edit: Or you can just download the official stock 4.x rom (ICS) from the dev section and flash that. 3.2 is pretty slow and wonky in my experience, you should be able to just download a 4.x ROM and flash, since you are rooted. Again, I am way out of practice. Don't do anything before reading up!)
(Edit again: I think I was making this harder then needs be. Just flash any stock 3.2 unrooted ROM, done. After you do that the automatic on the air update should kick in for you and update you to ICS)
Thanks for taking the time to work with me on this. I downloaded the program you suggested and tried to use a stock rom. When i went to reboot I had a picture of an android looking up at an exclaimation mark. It was froze like that until I restarted it. Now its back to the way it was, rooted and unupdatable.
I'm probably going to try to just wipe it all over but do i need to plug it into my computer somehow? I dont have a usb connector for the tablet, just the wall charger plugin. can i just download a rom and use the utility to try install it? when I reboot it am I supposed to be pressing the volume button?
I've read a few other forums but usually they sound pretty intense...

Hmmm..
Try the thread I linked two in my second edit of my last post. You just need to grab the stock and unrooted 3.2 - put it on a MicroSD card as update.zip - then reboot with vol rocker and power switch to get the system to flash the update.
That *should* work just fine.
(Edit: Forgot the link! http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1839313 - there you go)
Thankw, I am going to try it after readingna bit more. Do I need to have clockworkmod installed for all of this?

Nope. Just snag the stock unrooted 3.2 ROM - place it in the root of the MicroSD card as update.zip
Power down.
Power up with VOL + and POWER key held at the same time (you can let the vol rocker go when you see text appear in the upper left corner)
Should be all you need to do. Worst case; it does not work and returns you back to where you are now. Worth a shot.
If that does not work, let me know so I can do a few mins of homework and help you further. Been a long time since I have changed ROMS or had any issues with my a500.
I have bricked it twice by not following directions all the way or just making simple mistakes, but from what I have found there is always a way to recover.
Just tried it. I copied the boot zip to sd card and renamed update.zip and reset..It looked like it was going to download after showing some text in the corner and then an exclamation mark appeared above the androids head... I left it and after a few.min it rebooted back

Hmmm. Odd.
Like I said, I am rather out of practice.
Someone more experienced them me: please help me point Draight in the right direction here?
Thanks for trying to help. =(
I wish that my tablet wasn't having such issues. I;m going to try to scramble around the forums and see if I can find some advice...If anyone has a suggestion please let me know.
Thanks again entropy,

Update:
So I've been tinkering around with it a bit more and I found a usb cord that plugs it into my computer. I keep finding boken links on this site so Im struggling to find an update I can use to flash to. I downloaded a different super user program which allowed me to temporarily unroot my device. I then restarted it and no root checker says its no rooted and I cannot find the superuser program. I think I have somewhat unrooted it -- but I think the real issue now is the recovery tool. I keep reseting it - hard reset, or factory reset and it wipes everything away but when i try to update it gets about 1/3 of the way up the bar then it stops with an '!' Mark above the droid. Im kind of annoyed at this point and hoping for some new links or some ideas on how to repair the recovery piece.

Go to the Dev section, and grad a couple of the ICS Update roms. You will see them listed for the a500. Make sure they are the FULL update roms. Should be about 3-400mb. These contain a FULL ICS Update Rom, and not a patch file.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1816560
Then, go to the Themes and apps forum. You'll see a sticky that has the Acer Update Decrypter.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1869505
Now, unpack the decrypter, and select one of the ICS Updates. Then hit Start. Take a couple minutes, but you will have a duplicate file with the word "decrypted" added to it.
Wait, you are not done yet.
Using a program like 7zip, or even Winzip, open the decrypted file. DO NOT EXTRACT, just open it and pull the update.zip to your PC's desktop.
Copy that update.zip file to your Ext SD Card of the tablet. Don't be putting it in any folder, just copy it to the root of the card.
Now, you still ain't done.
With the tablet off. Press and hold Vol+ and then PWR. Hold them both untill you start to see text about installing blah blah blah, then release the buttons.
If it completes, and you can reboot into ICS, then you are good to go.
If something fails during installation, then decrypt the other update Rom file you downloaded, and do the same procedure. Usually one of the 2 or three should work for you.
Note these are for the a500, and not the a501.
One more thing. It's advisable you get your UID number before doing these things. You probably won't need it, but it's nice to have written down in case you need it in the future. Inf to get it is at;

Thanks! I am downloading a few of the FULL ICS roms:
*Acer_A500_1.031.00_WW_GEN1 : http://d-h.st/uAy
Acer_A500_1.031.00_PA_CUS1: http://d-h.st/idO
Acer_A500_1.041.00_WW_CUS1: http://d-h.st/Yt5
*Acer_AV041_1.054.00_WW_GEN1: http://www.theandroidcollective.org/...00_WW_GEN1.zip
*Acer_A500_7.014.16_041.206.01_COM_GEN1: https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B_bk...hVc1RVcHc/edit
The I downloaded the ones ending with Gen1. Once they are downloaded I will continue with the instructions. Thank you so much for your help! I will post how it goes later tonight.
Draight
I just decrypted both:
*Acer_AV041_1.054.00_WW_GEN1:
*Acer_A500_1.031.00_WW_GEN1
Both get get to the third bullet quickly and the bottom says DONE! It takes like 4 seconds. I don't think the Decryption key of $12 is working
[*] Opening file: Acer_A500_1.031.00_WW_GEN1.zip
[*] Decrypting using key $12
[*] Writing decrypted file: Acer_A500_1.031.00_WW_GEN1_decrypted.zip
I try to extract something from the decrypted file and it says the file was not downloaded properly and I should try redownload it...it says its not a proper archive
wahoo!
So that worked! I down loaded the file Acer_AV041_A500_1.033.00_PA_CUS1 and extracted the update. I palced the update on the sd card and booted with the power and sound volume pressed down. it went through the installation procedure and restarted twice before saying it was upgrading my aps and BOOM its got ICS and everything looks great. Thank you so much for your help and I hope that this paper trail is able to help someone in the future
My problem is that I'm on ICS and I'm rooted, but I just can't download a custom recovery. I've tried, and I haven't gotten anywhere
