[Q] Having trouble rooting - Atrix 4G General

Ok so I picked up an Atrix running 2.2.2 and I read the easy root thread and tried the exe bandbinnovationsdotcom/xda/GingerBreak.exe had no luck opening that. So I am just going to go ahead and do it the manual way but I am confused on where to move the adb files to and confused on the cmd prompts. somebody please help

Gingerbreak is an app you install on your phone. Not a pc app

The exe file in question pushes the gingerbreak apk to your phone
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA Premium App

How do I get Gingerbreak onto my phone then? Sorry for being stupid this is just alot more complicated than Captivate

I Saved the .exe to my phones storage but when i try to open it on my phone it says unable to open

Run the exe file on your computer with the phone plugged in with debugging mode enabled.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA Premium App

the exe does nothing when i click on it it says run or save, i click run it does nothing i save it to my desktop and then run it still does nothing

Is gingerbreak now on your phone?
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA Premium App

No, I just did the manual one with the cmd and it ran some prompts but nothing happend on my phone, no reboot or gingerbreak on it

Go into command prompt on your computer and navigate to where you have adb. You can get it from superoneclick. Then type adb devices. This should verify that your phone is connected properly. If this fails you will have to research yourself howto connect it. This is what i believe is the problem.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA Premium App

yeah it says list of attached devices and none are listed.

You need "USB mass storage" set as your option on phone when plugged into PC and "USB debugging" selected on phone also.
In other words your SDcards need to be unmounted for the Gingerbreak.exe to install the app on your phone when ran from PC.
Beamed in from WinBorg 4G via XDA Premium app

usb mass and usb debugging are both on..

Then when you run .exe on PC you should then see Gingerbreak app after on phone. Run the app on the phone. The .exe only installs Gingerbreak. Still have to run it on phone. You will see nothing on your PC after selecting run. There is no message saying install is complete.
Beamed in from WinBorg 4G via XDA Premium app

Well google a guide to setup adb as that is what is failing
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA Premium App

It's nothing to do with adb. Connect phone, run Gingerbreak on pc, look in app drawer on phone for Gingerbreak, run Gingerbreak on phone, uninstall Gingerbreak as it's not needed after.
Beamed in from WinBorg 4G via XDA Premium app

Yes but all the exe file does is use adb to sideload gingerbreak.apk AFAIK. No adb=no sideloading=no gingerbreak
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA Premium App

Ah, gotcha! Can get adb from superoneclick I think. There is a guide somewhere on XDA.
Beamed in from WinBorg 4G via XDA Premium app

Just read the Gingerbreak install instructions again. The .exe should do everything for you. That's what it implies.
Beamed in from WinBorg 4G via XDA Premium app

Yea I have read over and over if I try the exe it does nothing.. Tried doing the sdk **** and the adb stuff and got lost haha

More of a windows vista question

My laptop with vista home premium no longer allows me to view my sd card on my epic when connected thru the usb. I have the the samsung driver installed. I was able to root my phone and even went back to stock using odin in order to apply the update and reroot. All I am trying to do now is copy some mp3s on my sd card.
Any help would be great.

Does anyone have any ideas about getting the gs3 to show up on Ubuntu 12.04.1 so I can transfer movies and songs to and from the device?

Airdroid is in the play store, works on Debian so ubuntu should be fine
Airdroid works a treat. Thanks for that. Will also try usb debugging when I get home.
Is the problem with this phone and Ubuntu that usb mass storage mode was done away with? Would it register on Ubuntu fine that way?

Just a small update. Airdroid works a treat. Love that. USB debugging doesn't work at all. I also bought a usb otg cable as a backup. That's easy enough.
Just a pity it can't be as smooth as windows.

Yes, personally I use QtADB, which works fine. I found mounting worked fine out of the box but drilling down through folders showed them as empty, and transferring files just plain failed.
BTW Heimdall works fine as an alternative to ODIN, although I've so far failed to get the GUI functional on Mint Lisa x64, but no issues using CLI.

Installation instructions for Ubuntu releases prior 13.04
1. Add the PPA to your system
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:langdalepl/gvfs-mtp
sudo apt-get update
2. Then, launch Software Updater (previously known as Update Manager) and install the available updates.
3. Once everything has been updated successfully, restart your computer, unlock your Android device, connect it via USB and it should show up in your file manager.
Change the connection method to MTP and then you can view directories and their contents.

That's correct - Ubuntu 12.04 does not support MTP devices out of the box therefore the instructions above should help.

Thanks Chevli, I should have made it more explicit. I guess there are quite a few people on the older release.

Need a root guru!

My phone is by far a simple let alone one single phone. I cannot link it to a computer or Samsung Kies in any way. I need to root via adb, terminal emulator. I'm not tech savvy enough to do it alone. Will someone step to the plate?

To get adb you need:
androidsdk
For linux you would:
tar xfv androidsdk.tar.gz
cd android-sdk/platform-tools
./adb shell
Once in shell just type su to gain root access on android, su app might appear on phone so you can grant access.

no complaints yet, however, ask away I will help any way I can.
Here's a small tip, to raise command prompt in a directory that uses adb or fastboot. Hold down Shift key, right click and "open command here".
Hope that helps

You can connect to adb via terminal emulation if:
Adb start-server
Adb connect to localhostort
But unfortunately even though it connects its useless.
I know an exploit , I made a script to run the exploit over usb from another phone via adb. But again that wont work as it was patched by ICS.

How about getting a .zip of a rooted rom and .img of twrp from xda forums.
Then hit the playstore there's an app called SGS4Flasher.
Use that to flash the .img then boot into recovery backup phone and then flash the .zip. reboot into your rooted rom

Ok, if you can connect your phone to a computer, this is what you have to do:
1. Get the USB driver from here and install it.
2. Follow the instructions:
- for I9500 from here.
- for I9505 from here.
To find out what version you have head to Settings -> ... More (tab ) -> About device -> look under Model number
What ever program is launched when you connect your phone to the pc, close it. Use that I have linked above.
That's part of the problem, I can't hook it to a pc. The root needs to be done by manually entering commands into a terminal emulator via the device.

Well I don't think adb will allow u to send commands.
A connection can be made to localhost but thats about it.
U could try adb over otg from another.device or wireless adb ?

Try activate USB debugging option in the "Developers Option" section...
Goto settings - About Device -
Under About device keep tapping on (I think) either baseband or kernel version several times... Once u do it, u will see Developers Option under the "settings" which initially was not there...
Once u have the Developers Options, click on it and u will see USB debugging section.... Check on it and then connect your phone to your computer using the USB cable... Your computer will detect it and automatically install its driver...
Done!!!!!

Only way to root it is to have it connected to a computer. There's no exploit where you can root it directly from the phone

USB transfer problems

I cannot transfer files from my s4 to my computer. I have the current drivers installed and I have tried 3 different slots different cables...I even took out the sd and put it back. I have USB debugging checked and the computer does recognize the phone as connected (MTP) Device. Not sure what to try next, any suggestions?

Which computer?
Try without Kies installed if you have it installed--
I am making a nandroid now so can't check, but try the other choice from MTP. Forget what it is--
Also, I have rebooted phone and computer and it worked. Also, Android File Transfer works well--
Airdroid works well too.

I have and have used Airdroid. I must be slow, but the the UI is confusing to me. Maybe lack of use--
No kies installed. The other option from MTP is just for pics as far as I can tell.
Air droid works but I still want to correct this. Right about now I am thinking this may be a windows issue
