How long does your GPS take to lock on. Mine takes around 15 - 20 seconds. MAke sure to turn wifi location off so you can accurately measure the time.

My phone didn't get an accurate reading over 3G/GPS for the first few days of use. When it did work, my exact location would be off by about 1.5 miles. Magically, out of no where, it just started working and now finds my exact location in less than five seconds.

my GPS is awsome, takes only a few seconds to get a lock, even indoors

15 seconds is nothing.
My GPS took about 1 minute to lock on the other day which was disappointing considering the X10 would lock on pretty much instantly.
Although it might have been because it was overcast. I just tried it indoors and it locked on much quicker than the other day.

Mine won't lock on at all if I have wi-fi and mobile data off

Google maps gps slow to update

I have an iBlue 737 successfully paired to the HTC and have it playing nice with google maps, but the gps doesn't update, and if it does, it's over the span of 5-10 minutes. I could be blocks away, by then. Is that normal?
Other then the fact it usually shows me in a totally opposite place then I really am, it updates very fast for me. So far I am 50/50 on actually being in the circle around the needle. lol
Mine will update for a couple of seconds, then stop. Sometimes it reacquires, sometimes it doesn't. Usually, when it does, reacquire, it's 5-10 minutes down the road. If I turn the gps on and off, it updates immediately, then continues to track for about 30 seconds. After that, it stops and the dot stays at it's last location.

another battery thing to try

found this on another site don't know if it has any relevance since i just tried it but will keep you posted:
Disclaimer: the following may *not* to the HTC EVO! And yes, of course we should NEVER have to deal with this kind of kluge. But it might help…
There’s a known bug in the cell radio software on at least one other HTC Android phone (Eris) that can significantly reduce battery life. Basically, it thinks it doesn’t have a signal (though it’s connected) and frequently keeps trying to connect, which steadily drains the battery, even when the phone is apparently idle.
To check if this is affecting your phone:
From the home screen, press Menu, Settings.
Scroll down to the bottom and press About Phone.
Press Battery
Press Battery Use
Press Cell Standby.
Take a look at Time Without Signal. If it’s 0% or a bit higher, then your phone is not affected and you can stop reading. If it’s 50% or significantly higher than you know it should be (e.g. you were in cell range all or most of the time), then the phone is being affected by this problem. BTW, Time Without Signal may not be displayed in some circumstances – try again later. AFAIK, all HTC Eris’s are affected, not sure about other phones.
The good news is that there’s a simple way to fix it (usually called the Airplane Mode trick):
Power your phone off and then restart it.
Once it’s fully booted, plug in the charger.
From the Home screen, press Menu, Settings and Wireless & Networks.
Press Airplane Mode and wait until it’s checked and back to full brightness.
Unplug the charger.
Press Airplane mode and make sure that it’s unchecked.
That’s it!
Will this fix cut down down on searching for a cell signal? Can anyone verify thi works?
Trying this now. Will report back in a few hours.
It doesn't make any sense, but I think this might have worked. I tried this about 4 hours ago and I'm still at 0%. I was getting as much as 50% without service. I'll report back again after I have some more time to test it.
I'm at 10 hours now and it's still at 0%. I don't know why this works, but it appears to actually work. I was even able to turn on always on data with no negative battery consumption since I don't really have much auto-syncing.
Thank you very much OP.

Same here, went from 4:00pm yesterday to 5:00am this morning and still had 50% battery. Watched some trailers, used a flashlight app ( alot, thanks to being without power till this morning), did some texting, and was watching weather radar. My time without a signal is staying at 0% also.
Thanks also.
Here's an easier way to do this from a previous post. FYI - I did this a few days ago. Here's my current battery test stats (I'm letting it drain itself out and see how long I can go).
Uptime: 32 Hours, 45 Minutes
Awake Time: 4 Hours, 30 Minutes
It has not been on a charger since it was last fully charged. Love it.

Wow, my stand by was at 58%, though I am inside a building with horrible reception, I sure hope this fixes it.
Will this fix be permanent or will I have to do this every time I plug the phone back in or after reboot?

The original thread stated it had to be done every time, but mine has stuck since I changed it using the method here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=700601&highlight=battery.
One other thing to note: If you download the app in the Market called "Network", you can access the screen to change it without having to do the dialing or airplane mode thing. This would be the easiest way to do it if you happen to have to do it every time you reboot.
Final stats:
Uptime: 35:15
Awake Time: 5:15
This is about twice as good as I was getting before.

GPS and Battery comments

Normally I leave home with a full charge and come back 10 hrs later with about 15% battery remaining. I won’t break down my type of usage but it’s a general mix of voice and data. The phone is in my hand, in use, about 1hr and 30min per day with the screen on about 45min.
Today I ended my day using the phone about 1 extra hour (incl. 30 min Bluetooth phone call) and had 48% battery remaining. On a normal day I would have never even had gotten to the 30min phone call before it was dead.
So, if you do the math, the battery life today was roughly double of what it has been for the past 2 weeks.
I made one small change ... I turned off the GPS. Yes, I know, the GPS is only supposed to be running if a program that requires it is also running. I think that is false. In settings, locations the only feature I’ve ever had turned on was the GPS. I started thinking yesterday how amazingly, unbelievably really, quick that Google Maps set my exact location. I have 2 HTC phones with built in GPS and have had 2 Garmin GPS units, using an external GPS antenna, of which not one of those would acquire a satellite lock in less than 30 seconds, usually 45 to 60.
Now, flame me if you like but I’m convinced, after today, that the GPS is always acquiring satellites even when the icon isn’t present.
I downloaded GPS Test from the market, closed ALL programs with ATK, ran GPS Test and as soon as the screen appeared, 2 seconds, 4 satellites were already locked. It can’t be that good.
Try it ... won’t cost you anything.
BTW, it would be nice to get some feedback from someone that gives it a try. I’d like to know if this truly worked or it was just a fantastic coincidence.
Thanks
Nope, I agree completely. I've kept GPS off unless I absolutely need it and my battery life is great.

Glas to hear someone echo the thought. I may actually start to enjoy this X10 afterall
With GPS off, WIFI off and BT on about 2h/day i get 2 days juice
Problem is, i'm in wifi range 24h/day and i don't have a data plan so, wifi is on most of the time => about 12h juice.
GPS and WIFI are draining battery pretty fast.
Made a huge improvement for me too well done for spotting this

do you mean specifically turning gps off under settings, location? or all location services including location by network?
I am using the R2BA020 firmware.
I make approx 2hr voice call per day.
I left the wifi ON, but remove the wifi detection notification
I left the GPS ON, it should be only be activated via GPS apps.
I turn OFF the BT when I am not in the car.
So far, after weeks, on the average, I still get 2 days of juice at least.
oops! miss out the text...
I do only about 20-30 text per day.
And do quite a fair bit of FB and Twit daily...

I'm using 023 and wouldn't get half of that time without turning off the GPS.
I'm not sure if my GPS isn't sleeping the way it should or not but unless I turn it off it always seems to be active.
It's not a big problem for me since GPS isn't a feature that I need too often and it's pretty easy to activate from the widget if I do want to use it.
Strange as it may be this is the change that made the single biggest difference for my battery life.
Last night I installed (reinstalled) SetCPU and set up some profiles I read about that look like they make sense. One of the profiles that caps the processor at 338mhz when the screen is off but runs it full tilt when the screen is on seems to be pretty logical. My previous complaint about SetCPU was when I had it set to near 600mhz the screen performance seemed really slow. Now it only caps the processor when the screen is off so if checking email in the background takes an extra microsecond but helps battery life I'll be happy

I can't really comment on WiFi usage since I only use it once in a while to run SwiFTP but GPS radios are a big battery drain, have been on every GPS device I've ever owned.
Today with the GPS off and SetCPU setup better (from last night) I plan on giving the X10 some heavy use today and see how it does.

If the life of only one person is improved then my job is done
Glad it helped you.
just for your information. if you use the widget for wifi, silent, gps,BT which was included by SE you will notice that this widget has bugs. for example it shows that gps is off while it is on in the settings. same with wifi.
dont use this widget. take a widget for example from curvefish. these work properly.
I'll check out that widget problem, thanks.

Hi, I've got an unrooted R2BA020.. I've done a test this morning. I use wifi all the time at home and today have used the stock widget and quick profiles to enable wifi, bluetooth, GPS, and 3g. They've all been on for 6 hours, have actively used wifi for about an hour or so.
I'm now down to 90%, from 100%.. 10% in 6 hours.. More than happy with that.

Saturday when I have time I'll do the test with everything on and see how long it takes to drop 10%

I assume when you used the wifi for an hour the screen was always on?

I'll try it this weekend.
Well, I finished a 10 hour day with moderate usage, maybe 1.5hrs of screen time, 45 min phone calls, 3G data, no WiFi and the GPS turned off all day with 48% remaining.
That, for me, is a big improvement.
Since it's still not as much as I would like (I find myself holding back from using the device more) I've ordered a 2600 mAh Cameron Sino battery from eBay. I know, the battery is made in HK but what the hell ... the phone is made in China
I've read mixed reviews on the CS battery but most lean towards good.

GPS performance report overseas

Alright... with all the previous discussions about valid gps results, here's my report-not that anyone is going to take this to mean anything . I recently flew from LAX - TPE. 14 hour flight, phone was turned off in LAX, with airplane mode on. Phone turned back on after 24+ hours, airplane mode, so no questions about pulling data from the network.
Cold start (obviously) into GPS Test, 7k+ miles from og location, lock in under 30 seconds. Fire up wifi, connect to hotel network, Google Maps up to verify location, and dead on.
DK28.
Awesome. Yes froyo has def. Improved my gps a lot. I couldn't even get a lock in my house and now I get a lock within 1meter.

Win 8, display turns off like 30 seconds-1 minute after locking machine

There any way to make the time out longer? I lock my machine and within just a minute or so the screen's already turned off.
I can't for the life of me figure out how to make it longer, maybe 10 minutes or so.
