Does account sync (on) drains battery? - myTouch 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Does turning on account sync drains battery? Even if I turn off automatic account.sync and turn off every notification push on apps?
Sent from my HTC Glacier using Tapatalk

So your asking if syncing with nothing syncing? I'm rather confused.. But if that's it I'm not quite sure but i don't think it would since your not syncing anything

Things like market, gmail and whatnot sync if you have the option on. Well for me anyway.

Yes that's what I was asking becuasw all this time o turned it off becuasw it drains battery even if I'm not syncing anything.
I want to know because if it does not drain battery and Ill just leave it on because I am getting tired of turning it off ans turning it on eeverytimw I have to use the market.
P.sI'm typing this on my phone so I'm getting alot of typos:0

I have figured out the solution to the battery problem many of us have with Froyo

- Update to AOSP Email.
- If you are using Exchange, use Push only. Do not use the interval syncs.
- Uninstall / Disable Juice Defender
- Uninstall / Disable ATK
The whole problem is wake locks. The current Email client has an issue with wake locks if you use Exchange ActiveSync and do not have Push selected.
As well, if you have ATK installed, and it kills Email, then when it starts up again it will enter another wakelock.
Juice Defender causes the same problem by disabling the radio - basically, Juice defender makes the battery use worse, not better, because the re-sync of the email every 5 minutes makes it go into wakelock mode and never let go of the CPU.
After fussing with upteen dozen kernels and roms and modems, making these 3 changes has had a REMARKABLE decrease in battery use. I am burning my battery at less than 1/2 the rate I was previously.. I now burn less than 3%-4% / hour. Which means I will easily get through a full day with the phone.
EDIT: The other thing to make sure of is that you don't have the buggy version of Gallery3D that drains your battery due to holding onto the sensor. Your best bet is to just totally delete the APK from your ROM, and install the one from the market if it is an app you want.
Title is a bit misleading, please add problem with email battery drain, because a lot fo the froyo drain issues is for people not using the email and not even connected to data network mode.
You said update to AOSP mail ... anything wrong with the stock Email.apk?
Here's something i discovered, but wouldn't mind confirmation from others.
When waking your phone (with the charger not connected), is there a one second delay for the screen to come on? If there is, the phone is sleeping fine. If not, and the screen wakes instantly, something is preventing the phone from sleeping properly, thus wasting battery..
Its not really a good second but yeah there is a delay, never noticed it was instant.

As far as I can determine both AOSP and stock email APK have this issue, it hasn't been fixed in source yet. But, I have switched to AOSP so I can only report on results when doing that.

You don't have to be connected to data network. In fact that can be the cause of the whole problem!
If you use email and either
- It gets killed
- you lose network access or it is turned off (a-la Juice Defender)
.. then it goes into this wake-lock state and hangs onto the CPU forever, draining the battery.
Every person I have seen complain about the excessive battery drain was using Email like me.. the most common comments are along the lines of "all I have going is email and..." so I suspect this (along with the Gallery3D issue) is the cause of most everyone's problems.
so if I'm not using the Email app at all (I removed it entirely)
it SHOULDN'T be munching through my mAh?
You don't have to uninstall juice defender. Simply adjusting settings so that it does not force a sync on schedule. Then it actually saves battery again.

I don't have any battery drain (Doc's 7.6.2 JPO).
I use stock gmail app 'cause I only use three gmail accounts with data sync enabled.
I never installed Juice Defender nor ATK...
My battery lasts 2 days.

Hummm maybe 1/2s. Not instant, but not a whole second either...

No, just turning the radio on and off causes the Email app to lose connectivity and go into the wake lock.
Update - my phone burned through only 8% overnight from 11 PM-7 AM. Previously it would burn through 40%+ overnight, no matter what kernel or modem or other options I turned on or off.

Did you roll back the Gallery app?
Also it is possible you have another app with this wake lock problem. Run Spare Parts, Battery History, and change the dropdown to since last boot/Last charge and "Partial Wake Use". Click on whatever 1 or two apps are on top.
If the time listed is more than a small % of the time since last boot or charge, then that app has a wake lock problem.
In the case of the Email app it will easily have a wake lock use time of nearly half of the time since last boot.
Any app with a wake lock is a huge battery consumer since your phone never goes to sleep mode.
I'm not having any major batteries actually ;p I mean, if I can somehow improve battery life by changing some more stuff, why not?
I'm on the Gallery off Market (no sensor issue). on another thread if users are reporting Stock Gallery not having any battery drainage, I might roll back to try it out.

I am sorry for noobness, but how do I do these things you suggested? I cant find this configuration to disable checking mail besides push.
I am using stock email app and my gallery doest have sensors problem. But my cell is draining like 20% overnight (6 hours while cell was sleeping). This is insane and I cant track what is using this much.
PS: I am using Doc rom with cfroot

Open email, go into Account Settings. Under Check Frequency, make sure it is set to AUtomatic / Push. Then make sure you don't have any auto task killers or other things running that kill apps or turn your radio on and off.
I think email is the problem...
automatic/push selection

forgive my noob question but I cant find automatic/push in my email settings at all (it only allows for never, or other time intervals up to an hour). This is on the AOSP email app.

OK I should have mentioned Push is applicable to outlook email only. If you are using some other POP email you can't use push. I am not sure if Push is applicable to IMAP.
using email and settings switch to "Never"
did not seem to encounter this b4.
My data is usually turn off. I only turn on manually when i need to check mails or surf net.
I dont have sensors issue with gallery and I have removed all email programs from my SGS.
Still have battery issues. It drains really fast when data is on and I cant track what is using so much power

[Q] wifi disconnects overnight

Anyone know why every morning my wifi isn't connected, and I have to toggle it off/on to get it to reconnect?
I'm using stock radio and cm7 nightly 205 (just did full wipe, etc.), but it also had been happening on royal ginger 2 (default kernels for each). It doesn't seem to be a problem on my wife's stock mt4g.
I would check your WiFi sleep policy.. make sure its set to Never..I think it disconnect because no data transfer rate is going on.. go to WiFi.. press menu..advance look at the WiFi sleep policy set it to never..
Sent from my HTC Glacier using xda premium
I should have specified that too - I did confirm on both roms that my wifi sleep policy had been set to never. Other ideas?
Am not sure.. and you said you already factory reset your phone.. I was going to say try the app "keep WiFi alive." If that doesn't work then something else ain't right.

Keeping WiFi on in sleep mode?

Hi there, just curious if there is a setting to keep the wireless connection active while the device is in standby.
When was running CM7 my wifi stayed active even in standby or sleep, but now on Cyclonic it seems to drop the wifi connection if it stays in standby long enough. The wifi stays enabled in the settings, but upon unlocking my shift, i have to reconnect to the wifi almost everytime. Didnt need to with CM7.
Do you think its to do with the difference in software, or...?
Also, how do you rename your Shift something other than the PG06100?
Sent from my PG06100 using XDA App
Setting>Wireless & Networks>WiFi Settings>Click Menu>Advanced.
Then you have to click "never" in WiFi sleep policy.
And could you clarify on your second question?
Change it for your signature? Or as in your notification bar as your carrier label?
Shifted from my EVO.
Ok, so that was ridiculously easy...
As for the second question, see down there how mine says "sent from..." and yours says something different? Is everyones that is different just editing the text, or is there something that changes it?
Sent from my PG06100 using XDA App
You have to go to your xda settings and you can customize your signature from there.
Go into the xda app. Click on menu. And then settings. You should see it from there.
Shifted from my EVO.
Thanks again, I should have known it would be something that I should have known...

Phone Always Awake

So, I just went and checked my phone's battery usage and realized it has been awake all day. I'm not sure what's causing this, nor how to fix it. I tried glancing through the forums a bit but I'm pretty busy at the moment and didn't see anything, so I apologize for probably repeating a topic. Oh, I'm running MikG 3.0 with the Less Lionfish 1.4 kernel, Smartass governor and SIO I/O scheduler. Thanks for any help.
sounds like maybe a rogue app. did you restore any apps through Titanium Backup? did you recently download any new apps? How long have you been noticing it? do you have any data syncing in the backround that may be hung up?
app
I think alaman68 is correct. If you reboot your phone, does it happen again? If yes, check your running apps for rogue service. If not, you'll just need to to do trial and error.
Today was the first day I noticed it, and I check my battery usage rather often. I am constantly installing and uninstalling apps, but I don't have anything currently installed that I didn't have before when my phone was normal. I'll reboot my phone and see if it continues.

wipe the cache and delvik when you reboot
I rebooted it without wiping either cache and it has stopped for now. Should I do that anyways? Thanks for the help, by the way.
In terminal emulator, type dumpsys power.
It'll shoe you if any of your system level apps or sensors are causing it

Im having the same problem somehow. I thought it might b android Os that was high but that doesnt come up on battery use...
Cm7
Check to see if you have FriendStream removed, I know MikG will allow this through the tweaks. If it's not showing up in your list of apps, it'll lead to a sync problem that will literally keep your phone on constantly. The only way to fix is to wipe and flash again, then don't remove it. You can try to push it back in through ADB, but that didn't work on my phone. I reflashed, and now I'm consistently getting 19 hours with no tweaks applied. Just a heads up. Without FriendStream, you may see the sync icon in your top bar all the time.
I don't have the sync icon or anything, just the ones on the pic but still awake?
If i do clean flash then nandroid restore, will the problem fine back?
What else can b keeping it awake
I don't have friendstrm or any of those Facebook related apps
Nothing comes up on battery use, its simply always awake

Will this happen even if you shut autosync off? One of the first things I do when flash a rom is remove friendstream, I never thought of a potential problem though.

OK I d.l the app. But I'm having trouble finding what's keeping it on.
What option should I click on.
The first screen does say my phone has been awake for one extra minute compared to the screen on. But I can't find the option where it says what the app is.

When you open the app the first line on top says other. Change it to partial wakelocks. Before checking your wakelocks unplug your phone and don't use it for a few hours.

Wi-Fi always turning itself on?? :(

Last night I installed a few toggle widgets. First for auto rotation then for sound profiles then the Bluetooth one and in the end for Wi-Fi.
However after installing the Wi-Fi widget.. I noticed Wi-Fi would turn itself on without even asking my permission. This I noticed when I woke up today morning and saw an unexpected amount of battery drain. I immediately checked and the Wi-Fi was on. I remember correctly that I had switched it off in night (which comes under my daily habits after hitting the bed). Anyhow I immediately got rid of that widget by uninstalling but issue still persists.
Can anyone suggest anything to stop phone from turning Wi-Fi on itself?
Below is the app and my Wi-Fi's advance settings.

By the way.. I must add.. My phone is totally stock. And I I have had no problems with any of the apps prior to installation of this widget.

Sometimes apps like this can be a little flaky. I have HD widgets that I use to turn on my wifi and it can misbehave also. I have compensated by having a app that turns the wifi off at a particular time of day. You can also set it to turn wifi off when the screen is off. Other than that I would suggest looking for a widget that works better. There is a ton out there.
It was my bad that I downloaded this widget. I don't want to download some app to ''manage'' Wi-Fi setting off. I want to make it how it was prior this widget installation... Turning on and of myself. Is there any way.... Without the help of another app or widget

Can anyone attach a snapshot of his advance settings in wifi option? Like i have attached above
I believe it's the "battery guru" app you have installed... that's primarily what it does, keep you on Wi-Fi as much as possible

So far I think this was the cause.. Snapdragon BatteryGuru.
Go to the settings in BatteryGuru and turn OFF the "Manage Wi-Fi" option. It's been an hour I have turned it off and wifi hasn't turned itself on. Therefore, I believe this option was causing wifi to show up.
I remember a friend of mine turned this option ON (the same day when I installed that wifi toggle). I just realized that after reading QUIETLYloud's post. Thanks a bunch mate.
This will help people in future.
