First steps of rooting??? - Droid X General

Can anyone give me some advice on what steps I have to take first to root? Under that submission that says droid x for noobs, it goes all over the place on the first steps. I can't download titanium unless I'm rooted. Do I need to get bootstrap first? Deodex first? I know this is a redundant question, but I really want to root my phone right now and I'm not sure what to do first..
Thanks!

Should I just use z4root or easy root?

z4 is the easiest

Thanks! So, just use z4, root it, then what? Do I still need to install bootstrap and deodex? I plan on getting the newest gb update and probably liberty

[Q] Rooting Question

Ok so I have my Droid X rooted and all but I have a noob question. When the OTA update for 2.2 comes out will I have to unroot and then update to 2.2 and root it again or can I install 2.2 while being rooted???
Thanks,
Pink_Panther2121
I don't really know what I'm talking about here, but the way I understand it is you shouldn't accept OTA updates while rooted, as they COULD remove su, etc. I think someone will just make a root-preserving update.zip?
Yea, its not a big deal if I have to remove su. All ya gotta do is reinstall it and then allow the applications again.
Install 2.2 now! Its available and its super simple! Check here or rootzwiki.com for instructions. If you need help I will be happy to assist!

So....the update to 2.2 will only remove super user? I can just root it again?

Z4 root possible?

Has anyone tried to root using the z4 root app? Will it work?

Yea, I used a method listed here @ XDA to get S-Off and rooted when I had the Nov. Update before unrevoke's revisions. It used zroot to enable the process.

My friend (idiot couldnt wait for me to do it correctly) rooted his Droid X using Z4. Shortly after he discovered his Droid X wouldn't boot. Soft bricked Droid. Said friend orders another Droid X (warrenty) and still couldn't wait (till AFTER SCHOOL A MATTER OF HOURS!) to root and Z4'ed again. Another soft brick. He's on his 3rd Droid X, unrooted. I've refused to do so for him.
z4root by itself will not permanently root an incredible, it will give you temporary root till the next time you reboot. this information is available in the z4root thread. you might want to try posting this in the droid x forum if you want to know about z4root and a droid x .
Its the Inc that I'm concerned with, my wife's phone to be exact. I have the fascinate & I've rooted, de-binged & de- bloated and want to root her phone for wifi tethering. I used a 1-click root app on my Eris that worked well & was just wondering if something similar would work on this one.

The best way to get root on the Inc is to use Unrevoked 3.22. There is no one-click method like the Eris to gain permanent root. You will need to get adb (android-sdk) setup on your pc as well as get the correct usb drivers setup for this to work. The instructions are on Unrevoked's website.
While z4root is technically a one-click method it will only give you a temporary root that is lost every time the phone reboots and you have to re-root it. It can be useful if all you want to do is remove some of the crapware and thats it. I did use it to do just that with Titanium Backup Pro but had to re-root my phone about 16 times, re-install busy box each time and it became rather tedious and took a couple hours. Also I wouldn't recommend using it if your going to install a custom ROM or want to do other modding to the phone.
Edit: z4root does not put a custom recovery on the phone and you wouldn't be able to use it anyways if you did as root would be lost as soon as you tried to reboot into recovery. So you couldn't even install a custom ROM with it if you wanted to.
Revoked works. Instructions here. http://jonsuh.com/2010/11/root-your-droid-incredible-how-to/ if using windows, have fun downloading ext2 drivers, if using Linux/MAC, its very easy

I have an SCLD and it worked for me. But I do believe it actually failed the first time I tried it but after a reboot it worked. I think on the z4root thread it mentions rebooting first before using it.
Okay thanks for the info. My wife's is a slcd I believe so I think I'm going to try it.

[Q] NEED HELP. DROID X Bootstrapper. Sending a phone back to VERIZON. Desperate

First i'm going to say sorry as i know this isn't the first and probably won't be the last thread posted about removing droid X bootstrapper. With that said thank you in advance for helping me.
Before i go on i'll preface by saying i am no expert but with proper instruction i can learn very easily. I rooted my DX using z4root and used droid x bootstrapper to create a nandroid and flashed the Fission Rom. I am new to the DX, came from the DINC, and the only reason i rooted was because my phone was rebooting randomly and i thought maybe that would fix it but it didn't so i was able to get a refurb DX which is working better already and so now i have to send my old back to Verizon. Problem is i unrooted it and restored to defaults and Bootstrapper, Terminal Emulator, and SU were all still there. so i researched the boards since this community has made me excited to be an android user, and tried both methods of Root explorer and Terminal emulator, and even flashed maderstcock340.zip but again upon restoring to defaults, all 3 apps showed up again.
I need help, i didn't want to ask for help because i dont want to bother anyone but i need the help. Even a link to something else that i should try would be a great help.
I mean even if anyone is willing to skype with me and help me out that way i'll buy you a 6 pack.
EDIT: Will using the .340 system only sbf work to remove it? and if not will using TBH's 2.3.32 fix it??!?!
Have you tried unrooting with z4, you can uninstall the other two in the market. If z4 fails to unroot, you might have to flash a sbf. Its easy find " how to's" in the forums.

Well i thought that is what maderstcoks340.zip was supposed to be. A flashable sbf? can you direct me to a link where i can download the .340 SBF and the right version of RSD Lite
I'm currently at work and on my phone...so you'll have to find the links yourself...
But flashing the .340 won't get you completely back to stock. You'll need to find a link to the .320 sbf...I think there is one on droid-life.com
Apply the 320 and then the 340.
340 sbfs are easy to find...but you'll obviously need that too.

[Q] z4 Rooted Droid X to Gingerbread

I have a Droid X that I have rooted using z4 Root. Will I have any problems if I un-root and then download and install Gingerbread? I realize that z4 Root can't root Gingerbread yet, but I was wondering if I could just un-root and then install the update and just wait to re-root it when z4 Root can do it? It seems like people are having issues with the X even though they un-root before they update. Why is this? Thank you all for your time. I appreciate it.
People usually have problems updating because they have deleted or frozen bloat in their system folder.
If you unroot, and replace any bloat you may have removed, you should be able to update without a hitch.
After you download the OTA Gingerbread you won't be able to gain root again. The only option is two flash a two part prerooted install of .596 Gingerbread provided by Team Black Hat.
Sent from my DROIDX using XDA App
Thank you much. I shouldn't have any problem then because I haven't frozen or deleted anything. Is the z4 Root developer going to try to make a version of z4 Root that will root Gingerbread?

Question- OTA? What does it stand for?

Over The Air.
I unrooted with z4 Root and did a wipe and a restore to factory reset. I tried to update to GingerBread 4 times but all four times it failed. Somehow, even in the return to factory wipe, ClockworkMod Recovery stays on the Droid X. Why? I think it is the ClockworkMod Recovery that is preventing me being able to update to GingerBread. Do you think that might be the cause? In other words, resetting it to factory condition doesn't really reset to factory condition. How do I fix this? Should I just stay rooted with z4 Root and wait for a way to update to GingerBread from you guys? I'm just not sure what to do. Thanks for your time. I'm running Android Version 2.2.1 with a System Version of 2.3.340.MB810.Verizon.en.US.
Root froyo with z4 then follow directions on this thread

Hello...Noob here. Question I did not indoor my DROID b4 downloading 2.3
Should I have? And what will happen since I didn't?
I also have one other question. I accidentally tapped on Updates and now it is trying to download the update. Is there a way that I can stop this manually? Thanks.

i thought you wanted to update to gb? why would you want to stop it?
why dont you just update to the pre-rooted gingerbread. see here http://www.mydroidworld.com/forums/...-5-596-release-thread-something-everyone.html
I want to stop it because I have tried to install it 4 times and it has failed to install on all four attempts. It won't install so I don't want to waste the time and the data.
The link is not working for me either
Follow the instructions below to return to froyo or upgrade to gb rooted or not.
Check out these links.
Link 1 makes a linux CD that you can use to SBF back to Froyo in about 10 minutes. This is a very easy method to get back to froyo. If you can burn an iso file to a CD then you can do this method.
http://www.droidxforums.com/forum/d...-solution-your-windows-rsd-lite-problems.html
Then you can use z4root and install pre-rooted GB using the 2 flash method at link 2. Make sure that you use Droid 2 bootstrapper and not Droid X bootstrapper to install the rooted GB.
http://www.droid-life.com/2011/05/28/download-official-droidx-gingerbread-4-5-596-for-rooted-users/
Follow the instructions closely for ensured success.
This can all be done in about 30 to 45 minutes depending on your computer skills.

Fixed the link,
U can go directly from rooted froyo to rooted gb using TBH GBroot flash. Flash just like u would a rom, and u might need to install the update the kernal depending if you flash a rom. Its easy, just follow my link and scroll down to my post it gives u the steps

[Q] Noob trying to root. I need help!!

I'm currently running the System Version 4.5.602 on my DX. Never rooted before!!
My question is, where can I go to find out how to root my phone? Any links for the version I'm running? Or will I have to downgrade my version first? If so, where can I find out how to do that.
Much Thanks!!
a little help.
Look under pete's motorola root tools thread on this forum. everything u need is in there.....hope it helps.
Droidmodderx is a good one too
TappaTappaTappa
Google searching does wonders. Unless its something specific to this forum that I'm looking for, I usually google all my problems. Just add "droid x" to the end of your search so you know its for your phone.
As said before, Pete's Motorola tools is a good one.
On a side note...if you ever mess something up on your phone and need to SBF, MAKE SURE you have the .602 sbf file. I used to have 602 on my droidX and i ran an SBF for another version and none of my backup/restores prior to the SBF would work.
z4root also works.
You can also download it from the market (or from a google search)
edit... z4root may not work with a fresh .602 sbf (previously I sbf'ed to the previous release.. rooted then updated and that kept root)
Looks like pete's motorolla root tools is the best option right now
