Yea, I used a method listed here @ XDA to get S-Off and rooted when I had the Nov. Update before unrevoke's revisions. It used zroot to enable the process.

My friend (idiot couldnt wait for me to do it correctly) rooted his Droid X using Z4. Shortly after he discovered his Droid X wouldn't boot. Soft bricked Droid. Said friend orders another Droid X (warrenty) and still couldn't wait (till AFTER SCHOOL A MATTER OF HOURS!) to root and Z4'ed again. Another soft brick. He's on his 3rd Droid X, unrooted. I've refused to do so for him.
z4root by itself will not permanently root an incredible, it will give you temporary root till the next time you reboot. this information is available in the z4root thread. you might want to try posting this in the droid x forum if you want to know about z4root and a droid x .
Its the Inc that I'm concerned with, my wife's phone to be exact. I have the fascinate & I've rooted, de-binged & de- bloated and want to root her phone for wifi tethering. I used a 1-click root app on my Eris that worked well & was just wondering if something similar would work on this one.

The best way to get root on the Inc is to use Unrevoked 3.22. There is no one-click method like the Eris to gain permanent root. You will need to get adb (android-sdk) setup on your pc as well as get the correct usb drivers setup for this to work. The instructions are on Unrevoked's website.
While z4root is technically a one-click method it will only give you a temporary root that is lost every time the phone reboots and you have to re-root it. It can be useful if all you want to do is remove some of the crapware and thats it. I did use it to do just that with Titanium Backup Pro but had to re-root my phone about 16 times, re-install busy box each time and it became rather tedious and took a couple hours. Also I wouldn't recommend using it if your going to install a custom ROM or want to do other modding to the phone.
Edit: z4root does not put a custom recovery on the phone and you wouldn't be able to use it anyways if you did as root would be lost as soon as you tried to reboot into recovery. So you couldn't even install a custom ROM with it if you wanted to.

I have an SCLD and it worked for me. But I do believe it actually failed the first time I tried it but after a reboot it worked. I think on the z4root thread it mentions rebooting first before using it.

It worked great for me, I rooted with it, tried a few root only apps...then I unrooted with it to see if it works, and it worked...then I rooted again so I can use those root only apps.

I cant seem to get this to work. I downloaded the file, went and clicked root me and it just sits there. How long does it normally take
If that's all you did, then you need to reread the instructions. I'm sure it clearly states to toggle Bluetooth or wifi. I don't want to burn anyone but in my opinion, if you can't follow instructions maybe you shouldn't be rooting your phone.

will we still be able to use the one click method to root our phones after we have installed OTA update Froyo 2.2 from verizon in September. I have not rooted my X yet because the only thing i need it for is wifi tether and adblocker, i dont really need the custom ROMs. will i still be able to do this once my phone has received the update, if not will they develop a root for phones that have been updated via OTA

You cannot currently root a 2.2 device (unless you upgraded with that update.zip to 2.2 and moved SU), but I m sure that it will come sooner rather than later

Im using universal androot and have my phone rooted, which i believe is the same thing as 1click root will i still get the ota in September with root on, I hope i have not posted in a inappropriate place I just was curious.

I tried universal androot v1.6.1 and it was a no go, seemed soon after installing toolkit it kicked me out. I did the update.zip so i'm up to 2.2 now. Gonna try the droidx root in the first post see if that does it.

theres no way to root a 2.2 device yet, u have to root in 2.1 first then move su around and then move it again once upgraded to 2.2

worked like a charm on first go for me.
My speaker on the back of my droidx is blown i need to take it to verizon. How do i get rid of superuser permissions app in app drawer? I rooted with universal androot. I was told you have to remove it first then unroot. So i looked for it in app manager to delete it but its not there. I tried unrooting it still not there. Rooted it back still not there. Of course, I had to root it Now, if for some reason I need to take my DX back to Verizon, can I do the factory reset, or do I have to do it the SBF way? If it makes a difference, yes, it came with the 2.2. Also, I am not currently running custom roms yet, still need to read up on deodexing. I used DroidxRoot to root the phone. The reason why I asked is because within the program, it has a unroot feature, which I tried, and failed.

The factory reset will not remove root, the SBF on the other hand will remove root
You can try downloading "Z4Root" from the market. It is an app that roots and unroots your phone. It will detect that your phone is rooted already and will give you the option to re-root. You can then try hitting the "un-root" button and see of that does it for you.
I used Z4Root in my DX. Of course every phone is different and I take no responsibility if Z4root melts your phone down.
Oh- and most roms (if any) do not require that you are de-odexed first. Themes require it, but most roms do not. Installing the rom de-odexes your phone for you. I will put in a good word for Apex1.2 (for the non-leak) and Rubix (haven't tried 1.9 yet). Rubix is "blureless" Apex retains the "good blur" so that your phone actually works.

While having the option to unroot is nice, I have a feeling as you flash more ROMs and themes, you'll begin to start forgetting about the feature

I think SBF is the only route. However, I'm pretty sure that the VZW people won't even know it's rooted. Just a guess. Well, the techs might. But, I highly doubt they will care. These phones are considered 'disposable technology'. i.e. it'll just get refurbed and sent to somone else.

I went the SBF method myself when I needed to do an exchange 3 weeks after getting my DX. Unfortunately we cannot post a link to the SBF as we received a C&D request from Motorola.
Hi I have been looking everywhere for a good guide to help me root my Motorola Droid X.

and you should use perm root
If you're on 2.2/2.3.15 still, you might want to update to 2.2.1/2.3.340 before rooting. Go to settings/about phone and check Android system version and system version.

honestly i would just use perm root on z4. all of the phones ive ever rooted and the droid x was the easiest?wow i was quite surprised. I almost hope that the general public dont figure this out cause ill start losing money!!

I have tried many rooting methods and I found Z4root 1.3.apk to be the fastest and easiest way to root. If and when you use this app it starts looping and doesn't finish you simply perform a battery pull and retry the permanent root using z4root 1.3 again and it will work the second time. You may need to try a third time but in rare cases.

tried root 1 time using z4 root - it ran until my phone died. i rebooted and the phone was not rooted - i tried to determine this by using a terminal program and entering 'su' ...
am rooting again using z4 - how long should this run, i have the phone attached to my PC via USB so i won;t die from power ... thanks.

Make sure USB debugging is enabled before starting the root process. Are you using gingerbread or froyo?

Why do people ask that? Once you root, you can have ANY version of stock rom. Or run less stock roms. It's all win.No, you shouldn't recieve OTA updates once you've flashed. But root users will have whatevers pushed OTA long beforehand. Plus you can over/underclock, screen capture, do backups, and run RealHDMI with root.

It appears that a few Droid X owners have successfully used this exploit, according to some of the responses in the link you provided. I'll be interested to see if this will work on the final Ginberbread OTA (keeping fingers crossed)!

If wireless tether works for you then go ahead and use it, Verizon can only track the tbh hack. Some people have not been able tto get it to work

As long as you don't use it there will not be any problems
Just SBF'd to .340 and used the official update to .588, GingerBreak worked fine except I'm having issues getting Titanium Backup to recognize it has root. I get the prompt to allow it, but the app still says it doesn't have it. Other root apps, like adfree and autokiller memory work just fine. Hmf.
Scratch that. Just went back into TB, updated busybox and it's right as rain. Two thumbs up!
Works great for my DX, however, I need to un-root it and I've tried several ways from other forums and I am not having any luck.
Does anyone know the procedure to un-root for GingerBreak?
Edit: I don't have Gingerbread installed either, I'm just running 2.2.1 - I don't know if this makes a difference when trying to un-root this. If anyone could help me out I would appreciate it. I've been scouring trying to find a solution and I've had no luck yet. I've tried rooting then unrooting when the one-click program and that isn't helping me either. Any suggestions??
I don't know if this can be answered but it doesn't hurt to ask. How come the ota cannot be rooted but the P3droid version of GB can be rooted? If its the same thing then what is the difference on why it cant be rooted?
Just going to guess here (this is speculation not fact) but I would assume that p3 being as skilled as he is was able to reopen the exploits used to root that motor/verizon closed in the ota.

yea, what chbennet said sounds about right.
it just has to be rooted before it's put onto the phone. once on the phone, it cant be done.
I purchased my DROID x around january 2011. First thing I did was install z4 root (not sure which version) and superuser. Also installed wireless tether from the market. Everything worked fine until the update was available. I went to my settings and updated without unrooting or changing anything. As soon as it was done updating I was no longer rooted. When I open z4 is says temp root, perm root and unroot. When I try to use tether it asks if my phone is rooted. When I try to hit perm or temp root z4 closes and I have to turn phone off and back on to even get it to open. I really want my tether back and I have no clue what to do.if I need to return phone completely stock please give instructions on that as well. Thanks
Z4root will not root the phone after the update to Gingerbread is taken; also, wireless tethering does not work on Gingerbread.
If you just want root, I recommend searching for 'PetesMotorolaPhoneTools', and using that to root your phone.
If you want to be able to tether then I recommend SBFing back to 2.3.34 and flashing either MIUI or a version of CM7 that uses the froyo kernel.

Tethering using apps such as Wireless Tether is blocked on Gingerbread; however, there is a patch for the 3G Mobile Hotspot, I believe that when you use it Verizon can track you though.
