I recently made the switch to Gingerbread. However, I actually miss the default messaging and e-mail apps from Froyo. I've found a system dump of 2.2. I've tried pushing the messaging.apk and BlurEmail.apk (which I renamed to blur_email.apk to match the naming convention of Gingerbread) to system/app but I still have the new look. Any other suggestions? Just to be clear, this is what I've done:
Code:
adb remount rw
adb shell
cd system/app
mv blur_email.apk blur_email.bku
mv Messaging.apk Messaging.bku
exit
adb push blur_email.apk system/app
adb push Messaging.apk system/app
adb reboot
I've done a few things with ADB, but I still consider myself a newbie. I won't be offended if someone offers step-by-step/idiot proof instructions.
Is this even possible?
Why don't you just move the files using root explorer?

If the code above isn't working, then will using Root Explorer work? I'm am pretty sure I'm correct about what APK to pull for SMS (messaging.apk) but I'm not 100% sure which APK for e-mail (BlurEmail.apk or blur_email.apk)?
I've actually since gone back to Froyo, but I'd prefer to move on up to Gingerbread and stay up to date.
I agree. Froyo's messaging app is way better, you can scroll through the messages without hitting the 'more' button. It just works better.

It isn't so much the functionality of the Froyo messaging app.. It's the design. Moto's Gingerbread update really changed the design of the default messaging app. I like the simplistic, dark design of the Froyo version.
Also, before anyone suggests I switch to Handcent, Chomp, Go SMS, etc.. I have tried them all! I actually have Go SMS installed, but I still prefer the default messaging app's layout to Go SMS's most simple, dark theme.
Oops..
I'm a bit embarrassed to admit this, but as it turns out the messaging app that I'm so in love with is stock ANDROID, not Motorola's stock Froyo. I have been running Rubix for a while, which has the stock Android messaging app, not the Motorola one.. Before I switched to Rubix, I had used alternate messaging apps (Go SMS, Chomp, etc).. Clearly it's been a while since I've seen Motorola's stock Froyo messaging app.
Sorry for the confusion!
On the bright side, at least I know if I find a Blurless Gingerbread rom I'll be happy.

Hello everyone!
Just recently I got the 2.2 OTA for my Droid (rooted) and I'm absolutely loving it, except for one thing: the new MMS app. I strongly dislike the new look; I don't want to see my own profile icon and I definitely don't want to see several of each icon. I really liked the way the Eclair MMS app looked, and I really liked seeing my friends' facebook statuses next to their contact icon.
I've tried replacing the Froyo Mms.apk with the Eclair Mms.apk, which could display everything and worked perfectly fine except for when I actually went to send a message. It would force close and never show that the message actually sent, even though I got replies back, so I know they sent. Also, in order to get this to work, I had to remove Mms.odex. Once I saw that the Eclair app displayed everything and seemed to work fine, I (foolishly) erased my backup of Mms.odex and now I can't run the standard Froyo Mms.apk. Luckily, I did find a modified app that I can use in the meantime, so I'm not totally out of luck right now.
Is there any way to get the old Eclair MMS app/look back? I would REALLY love it! And please don't just suggest Handcent or Chomp. I've tried them and I just don't like them. I went through all the styling and customization options and I just couldn't get it to look like I want. All I want is the old Eclair app back, not alternatives (unless they look almost identical to Eclair's). If it's impossible, I guess I'll deal with it, but "impossible" and "Android" don't really go together...
Thanks in advance!
edit:
I attached two screenshots taken out of an emulator, just in case anyone isn't familiar (why you'd need to see them, I dunno, but I figure more info is better).
Bump. This is a good question. I hadn't really even though about how much better the 2.1 vs 2.2 SMS/MMS app. I knew there was something different but thank you for laying it out. I'm having a problem where the app isn't posting my icon. It is synced with my Facebook contacts so I don't see why it doesn't show my avatar, and if it isn't supposed to then why even change it? No sir, I don't like it. If there is any way to downgrade to the earlier messaging app I would very much be interested in knowing.

Shameless bump. Still driving me crazy. Hoping there's an alternative by now?
I have searched far and wide, and have been unable to find a solution, but I am sick of the SMS/MMS included in the stock Samsung rom. The lack of Hyperlink support kills me... Any way to get the stock messaging app working or any roms which have the stock messaging app?
Try Handcent in the market. I use it over the stock MMS.

Really, you searched far and wide?
It seems to me like you probably didn't actually use the "search" function at all.
If you had, you very quickly would have found this thread, that I originally started, about stock 2.1 apps working on the vibrant, heck it was only at the bottom of page 2 of this very forum, not buried under hundreds of threads/pages.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=731822
If you had honestly searched, and replied in that thread, I probably would have even typed out everything step-by-step again, for like the 50th time to help make sure you get it installed correctly, but wow, now I'm just getting annoyed.
Sigh, I totally understand why so many DEV's don't ever respond here anymore. =(

Just get hand cent or chompsms from the market. Then in the stock messaging app turn off notifications and in chomp or hand cent turn them on.
i am using handcent.. works flawless for me.. never have any lag time and/or force close.. i want to get rid of the stock sms also but i have not found anything here yet..
EDIT: I remove the mms.apk and mms.odex from the system/app folder.. now i don't see the mms icon and just using Handcent..

Then busybox cp the vanilla MMS app to /system/app
The end.
You can open hyperlinks in the sms/mms app included on the phone. Tap the message and you can then tap on the hyperlink to open it in your browser

Hi guys,
First of all, I would like to thank all of the developers and the people who maintain this board for providing such an amazing educational service for the rest of us. Without this website, I would never have learned how to root and do the fancy things that I can now do on my phone. thank you!!
So last night I rooted (2.2, Droid X) and removed the stock e-mail app by renaming the .apk to .bak. Today I decided that I want it back since I use 2 different e-mail accounts. After renaming the app back to .apk, I now see the E-mail app in my app drawer again. However, when I click on it, it loads a black screen for a half second, then closes. I am running LPP as well. Anyone know what I can do to fix this?
Thanks in advance!
To the best of my knowledge, you should be able to just rename it back (like you said you did, I'm just hinting maybe something got corrupted?).
Well, it seems to have suddenly fixed itself, I'm not sure what the issue was. However, it does not behave the way it did before. Prior to rooting, I had the e-mail icon in my dock (LPP) and when I tapped on it, it would load my gmail. Now, it loads the MESSAGING window with Universal Messaging, Facebook and Text Messaging. Sigh. Oh well, I guess I'll have to manage without it.
Hello Everyone,
Im using HTC Desire with AuraxTsense 8.1.1 and ive seen a few roms with the core android contacts app. I tried using mybackup pro to back this app up and install it but it says "application not installed". Do i need to download a .zip and use recovery to install this? where could i get those files from either an .apk or a .zip.
Thanks for any help guys.
i believe the contacts is two apks contacts and contactsprovider. And you cannot get them into a sense rom by merely installing it, theres some wierd issue with it if u try to replace the senseui's contacts with it...
I know what you mean with wanting this, but if you're willing, try a different rom to see what you like at the same time? Something AOSP built. If you search there are ways to adb push the stock contact app which is what you want, but that includes the dialer which you also need if you want the contacts.
If you're willing to experiment, try a different rom. I was on AuraxTSense 8.1.1 also, but the battery drain was totally annoying. So I went to Oxygen and I haven't looked back (and has the contact app which you want). Done 18 hours on my phone today with relatively standard usage and, went down to 32%, amazing tbh.

You can try to flash the "Android_Contacts.zip" file that is found on the mini-site I built for LeeDrOiD's ROMs. I have done so in the past (flashed through recovery) and both the HTC People AND stock Android Contacts seem to co-exist in perfect harmony It simply asks you which you'd like to launch when tapping the "Phone" button for example.
Of course it would be wise to perform a Nandroid backup first just for safety's sake!
Sense should allow all that harmonies in AOSP rom too. why dont they~~
Thanks for all the replys. im gona go try that website now!! ill post how i get on.
ok tried that but just got a load of force close messages before i could even start up the app. is there any .apk on the marketplace that would do this, or even a similar app. I know you can get it on sense cause i had it on one of the sense roms that i use. I just like AuraxTsense because of the power control in the notification area.
well actually i dont understand why do you want the android dialer? Sense dialer is what people want. Well at least i want it it, want it so much but sad it cant be used on AOSP roms.
Cause i love having to click a phone app and having my dialer/contacts/recent calls all in one app and just tabbed on the top. I dont care if its the android dialer but this is the best one ive seen laid out for what i want. Is it possible to get the samsung one or a similar app?
Ricochet I totally agree on that. The standard Android dialer app is way more functional and looks nicer too IMHO. Only thing missing is T9 search. I used Dialer One from the market when I wasnt rooted, however found it to be less snappy then a standard app.

I tried that and it somewhat worked. The dialer comes up but the contacts aren't there. The favorites and call logs are populated though. I'm using an HD rom though so I'm not sure it's the same (RCmixHD)
Tust found "TouchPal Smart Dialer" in the market. The main screen is a mix of HTC with Android Contacts tabs at the top. Gonna try this out to test functionality, but the layout is awesome!
Thanks man, that app is exactly what i wanted.
I've found a way to get the Republic Wireless app to work in custom ROMS, well at least CM11 & CM12 but I don't know why the method wouldn't work elsewhere. Currently I've been able to get the phone activated and I can send text messages in CM11 but phone calls do not work on either CM11 or CM12. Also, text messages show up as the "secret number" and not your actual number. The phone will show that it's getting signal but the MEID space is null in the Republic app. I'm sure there are things that I'm missing that need to be copied over for a fully functional ROM but here's what I've got so far.
In the build.prop:
#begin build properties
CHANGE
ro.product.name=
TO
ro.product.name=ghost_repw
#additional build properties
ADD THE FOLLOWING
ro.build.repw=true
That should be it for the build.prop
These you can copy and paste into your ROM. I recommend taking them from the RW Stock ROM.
system > app
RepWNetworkManager.apk
RepWNetworkManager.odex
RepWTrafficManager.apk
RepWTrafficManager.odex
I'm not sure if you need .odex and .apk, I copied both just in case.
system > etc > permissions
com.bandwidth.rw.system.xml
com.sprint.xml
system > framework
com.bandwidth.rw.system.jar
com.bandwidth.rw.system.odex
com.sprint.jar
com.sprint.odex
again, not sure if both are necessary.
system > priv-app
Republic.apk
If you change the build.prop, copy the needed files over and zip the ROM back up, you should have a functioning Republic app. If anyone has any ideas as to how to make this fully functional, feel free to post your ideas.
This is very interesting. I have been wanting to get custom roms on republic. Keep us up to date on your progress.

I haven't done much with this lately because I can't seem to make any progress on it.

RW had to modify both the Messaging and the Dialer apps in order to make them work with their WiFi calling system. Although I haven't compared them to the stock apps I suspect that if you do you will see that they are not the same.
It's occurred to me that even if we could get CM11 working properly, I doubt we could do so with any Lollipop ROM before the official update.
I've done further research by using the RW Dialer.apk and Mms.apk. Here are my findings:
Opening the Dialer or Messaging apps caused immediate FC.
Calls to my RW number came through, but could not be answered because the Dialer would FC.
By switching back to the CM Dialer, I could send and receive calls from the HSN (hidden Sprint number).
By installing a secondary texting app (i.e. Google Messenger), I could send/receive SMS with the HSN.
Also using a secondary texting app, I could send/receive MMS with my RW number (a peculiar result).
SMS to my RW number never came through at all.
Calls never seemed to work over Wi-Fi, but the MMS did, and some of the SMS might have.
From my research so far, it seems you could have a fully functional normal phone by using your hidden Sprint number in this method. You would lack the RW feature of Wi-Fi calling, though Wi-Fi MMS seems to work with your RW number.

I'll have to look into the Dialer but I've used Messenger in CM11 and it mostly worked, but went to the Sprint Number. I'll try swapping out the messaging and dialer apps and see if that effects anything. I don't think just the apps would make a difference though as apps like Messenger do work on the RW ROM without modification. I'm betting, the messaging apps at least, are routed through a file(s) that I'm not aware of. I think one of the files I mentioned in my OP or something similar to them is what routes messages and allows it to work with WiFi. I know I'm missing something that makes the RW app/framework recognize my actual phone number/MEID.

I've had similar results with my steps and using Messenger. I was able to send texts on CM11 and receive them but they were all through my Sprint # and the formatting was strange. I don't recall if I could make calls at all.
I think making it work on CM12 is possible. But I agree that it's not possible quite yet. Without a stock image to look through I have no idea how they've organized everything. I haven't checked in a few days, but if someone has been able to make a ROM out of the nandroid backup, I could decompress that, move the RW files over, recompress and attempt to flash it. I'm almost certain there's something I'm still missing, I'm just not sure what it is.

Really cool findings in here... I've wondered about this myself, and whether it might be possible to install CM in a rom slot and then use a global pre-paid sim card while traveling.
bstevens23, did you flash the CM image into a TWRP romslot or have you used sunshine to unlock and flashed over everything? I'm a little fuzzy on how the flash mem in the phone is actually partitioned up, especially when it comes to stuff like radio firmware vs. os partitions.... not sure what would work here.
Cool stuff!:good:
I saw this on reddit. As we know were also not allowed access on stock to the APN settings. There is a utility on f droid that gives you access the APN settings. There are about 15 various APNs that seem to be included that you can't edit, select, or delete. Likely these are chosen by the RW app.
It is too bad that there is not a utility that allows you to compare two roms and displays the differences
