Movies in Market (3.1) - Eee Pad Transformer General

So I updated with the rooted 3.1 and it's awesome, but when I got into the market, there's just the apps and books tabs but no movies tab. Anyone else have the movies tab yet or is this coming from the OTA and not the leaked one?

i think movies only works with a 3g xoom so far, the wifi xoom and tf may come latter
from what i read somewhere

This may be the reason you don't see Movies on your rooted device...

They must be blocking it from non rooted devices too, because I have no Movie tab in my market after upgrading to 3.1. However, I do have one on my pc on the Web based marketplace.

I'm not rooted and I can't see the movies either after 3.1

It's not available on all honeycomb devices yet, but I'm sure we'll find out more when we can have in in the coming weeks

Wow, this is ridiculous.
I don't understand why Google would show something off at IO, then not follow through for other devices.

Unfortunately, the Movies department is only open for Android 3.1 tablets with 3G radios, hence, our 16GB WiFi test unit still showed it as unavailable. ......

When you choose an unsupported app the device does not show up in the download to drop down, I believe the movies will be the same way.

"Unfortunately, the Movies department is only open for Android 3.1 tablets with 3G radios, hence, our 16GB WiFi test unit still showed it as unavailable"
That's just dumb.

Why in heaven's name would you now allow Movies on a WiFi only device?

Stupidity Either that, or it's a ploy by the carriers to push people into overages and ever more expensive data plans, they can't do that if you're only using WiFi.

3.1 update on non US wifi Xoom?

Has anyone manually updated to 3.1 on a non us wifi xoom? I am running stock without any modifications I have a Japan xoom model mz604. The process seems pretty simple but I want to confirm others got it working before I risk bricking mine.
Xoom Updated with the Latest Android 3.1 support, but only for Verizon version.
The update details of Xoom Android 3.1:
● Support for movie rental function of Android electronic market, streaming movies to big screen devices with HDMI;
● fully supports the Adobe Flash Player 10.2;
● Recustomized the Widget of Xoom;
● support for connecting multiple USB devices, including mouse, keyboard, joystick and digital cameras;
● support for using bluetooth headset on Google Talk, Bluetooth keyboard and mouse, and using shortcut keys;
● Image transmission communication will be more convenient to transfer pictures to PC.

didn't exactly want to root it as wanted to keep it stock and happy and stuff
Have any of you tried doing a factory reset and then checking for system updates, or changing the date and then checking? Just what I've read in other threads. I'm going to try it myself tonight, as I haven't got my XOOM with me right now
Also very keen to know when and how we UK users can update!
Hi. Have any of you updated to 3.1 with the US update as im thinking about upgrading my wifi xoom with the 3.1 hack by brd but was wanting to know if anyone else had done it successfully on a non-us xoom. Thanks.

Mine is Xoom UK, I was impatient, so I start manual update to US 3.1, everything works great. Some apps that initially missing in 3.01 UK, are here now with US update like Google books, some games etc, but the overall system is faster. No more stupid messages on android market like - not available in your country, or something. Thank you all !

Mine too, google limit access for the rest of the world except US, but in the future this will change. More important is that market fully working (for now) .
Now we waiting for microSD Card
Just got the Google Videos app on my UK wifi xoom updated to US 3.1 rom. Really very annoying that we can't use videos in the UK yet. Is there any way around it? Through a proxy perhaps? The irony is that to get most proxy apps to work you need root, which is another thing that prevents use of Google Videos.
Hmm what if you had some sort of vpn connection to the US? Just a thought... Oh well, movies are the least of the worries

Yes, it is possible and I have done so myself using brd's rom. I had an HK Xoom which is now US 3.1, rooted and with access to the sdcard and it feels a lot responsive than stock. The market app even sees my Xoom as a US Verizon Xoom thus allowing me access to apps ordinarily unavailable to users in my region.

Same here, never had a movies tab, before root or after root.
For reasons that I cannot comprehend, you have to have a cellular radio to buy movies in the google market, wifi only devices will not have access to it.
Edit: Apparently it's rolled to the market for the wifi only xoom, so we may eventually have access to it.

Is it possible to watch XfinityTV or HBOGo on A500?

Just got my A500 via Staples mail order. Using the stock browser, I tried to catch up on my Falling Skies via XfinityTV with no success. Instead of a show, I got a message to install Microsoft Silverlight plug-in.
One of the reasons I got a tab is to be able to watch shows online when I'm stuck waiting for family at rehearsals, etc. I already have an e-reader and a video player, so this is the gap I need to cover.
Is this possible? Do I need a different browser? Or am I outta luck?
Thanks in advance.
UPDATE: In case anybody else is interested in this, Comcast "thinks" that the Xfinity android app will be updated to allow actual tv episode watching in a couple of months. Apple took precedence and they will eventually finish working on it for Android. Meanwhile, their app is good for controlling your DVR remotely, which is useless for me, which is why I tried to watch through the browser. Which is why I ended up posting here.
As far as I know there isn't any silverlight support for android yet. There was a project called moonlight that was supposedly going to bring silverlight to android but I did not hear anything new about it for the past 6 months, so I assume it is dead.

To whom? It's hardly Acers or Google's fault that these sites decided to use a Windows only technology for their media streaming.
HBOGo on A500 works.
And given that HBOGo app streams video in H.264, the stream from the website is higher quality.
I am using Dolphin Browser
Did you install the app (from where, I don't see it in market) or do you just navigate to hbo dot com via browser? Thanks.

Almost. If you're on honeycomb 3.1, you need to go into your browser's settings and set the viewing mode to "desktop." If you're still on 3.0, you will need to set your browser to debug mode to enable desktop UA string.
Though really, you will want to watch on 3.1 because supposedly it gets better video performance with Flash.
And if some of the online shows require real player how do you watch that since
the extension is .smil and android real player can't open that to play.
Trying to run hbogo on stock browser along with dolphin opera and Firefox all a nogo has laggy video audio is great but picture very slow running 3.2 stock rom but these sites only run when in desktop mode tablet mode not an option any have a working apk version to install and see if we can get it working or some good setting for the browser

Only reason I would prefer ipad over transformer - NETFLIX!!

There is no NetFlix for Canadians in marketplace but it's so easily available on AppStore. Why? Oh Canada!!
Update: I was wrong....i now love my Transformer more then the ipad!! Thanks laslow.
Uh...check again. Netflix is available in Canada. I'm using it on my Transformer, with my Canadian Netflix account....
[Edit] It's also my my Nexus S. Definitely available in Canada.

Are you sure? I cannot even see the Netflix app on my marketplace....also people are discussing on anther forum about it.
http://www.transformerforums.com/forum/asus-transformer-apps/5533-oh-canada-netflix-tf.html
did you download from Marketplace? Did you use VPN by any change?
Nope. I opened the market and installed it. No tricks, no VPNs, no market enabler - nothing. Worked on both Stock and Prime ROMs. Same with my phone, and, come to think of it, my wife's Nexus One.
I'll give it another try tonight.....thanks.
I just looked at that thread - it's pretty old (newest replies are from September, when it wasn't officially available).
Here's the official announcement: http://blog.netflix.com/2011/10/expanded-android-support-now-available.html (note that it's from October).
...so you can rest assured that you'll be able to watch all twelve of Netflix's straight-to-video "Watch Instantly" releases on your Transformer. ;-)

Yeah, it was OK. I just couldn't justify the cost, when the TV stuff is so easy to see rerun on cable over and over, all day long. It's a shame, but once they doubled my price I cancelled Watch Instantly and went back to DVD-only.
It's hence rather annoying that, having removed the Netflix app (which helpfully doesn't let you manage your DVD queue), it's been forced back on me by the latest firmware when I don't have (and will never have) any use for it.

Agreed. It's all the old backlog of TV shows I've missed that keep me on Netflix. Once I get caught up on those, I might quit the service completely.

It's going to get significantly worse, as well. Netflix lost their Starz deal, which means they'll be removing ~1,000 of their best movies from Watch Instantly as of early 2012.
The money they *were* paying for the Starz content (~$30 million per year for all ~1,000 movies together), they will instead be spending on Dreamworks content from 2013, priced at $30 million per year, PER MOVIE.
In other words, Netflix dropped 1,000 Sony and Disney movies through Starz, and used the same amount of money to pay for one single Dreamworks movie. And they'll be getting a grand total of three Dreamworks movies in 2013 -- which means they still need to find another $60 million worth of existing content that they can drop, to pay for the other two Dreamworks flicks.
Watch Instantly is rapidly spiraling down into a vortex of suck.
I'm confused. Wasn't Netflix available on the iPhone/iPad first?
*EDIT*
Yup. OP says iPad>Transformer
Transformer has Netflix. Netflix on mobiles isn't that old. It was first released on Apple Products then slowly released to Android. Whats the big deal? We could watch Netflix even before it was "officially" supported.

Yup, we could side load it pretty early on, ever since I have had my TF at least about 3 months. Im waiting for an official hulu+.
I bought most my employees ipad2s a few months back and fired one about a month ago so I had some time to play with a rooted ipad2. I must say that I was not impressed, I loved my TF more in just about every aspect. The only place the ipad was better was in battery life, but it also took 4 times as long to charge compared to my TF. Plus the TF paired with the dock leaves the ipad2 in the dust. I ended up giving the ipad2 to my church lol.

Not to mention that the recent tablet-specific UI update from Netflix came out on Android tablets first and it hasn't come out for iPads as of yet.
As for Hulu+, have you tried side-loading their app from a phone yet? I "harvested" the apk from my Glacier and installed it on my TF, and Hulu+ runs just fine on it. You just can't have any of the ad blockers running or your HOSTS file blocking anything.

Kindle Fire, Amazon Videos

Hi,
I'm not sure if possible, is there a way to sideload the Amazon video app on the Xoom? Or is it possible? I have Amazon Prime and would like to watch the free movies/tv shows with the same app the Fire uses.
Thanks,
Good idea, since the Fire was just rooted there's probably a system dump over on the Fire forums.
EDIT: And here you go http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1348782
As a workaround, the browser works very well to view Amazon Prime videos as long you have Flash installed. On my stock 4G 3.2.2 system, the video was prone to the occasional stutter. But after rooting and overclocking, The video is flawlessly smooth in full screen HD.

^ this. Also appears that people who are rooting their devices are breaking the app, same with us and the ability to rent movies in the market apparently. Amazon won't let devices that are rooted stream from Amazon Prime.
But I guess we just wait and see. I have Amazon Prime also and would love to just have an App directly for Amazon to utilize it.

Just constant FC on my Xoom when I try and select anything as well. Was able to load it on the G2 but says same thing about the configuration.
The Kindle Fire OS is based off of gingerbread so maybe that's the reason for the constant FC on Honeycomb? I don't know.

I unfortunately do not have Verizon service on my Xoom as I travel too much for it to really be useful, since most countries don't really use CDMA so I'm sorry I can't answer that question. Funny since I've restarted the damn thing force closes when I select something to watch.
Also on a side not I'be read that KindleFire users are losing streaming capabilities when they root.

I had the opposite experience when I tried it on my LTE-upgraded, non-rooted Xoom. I can browse the app, but selecting anything results in a force close.
same here on a rooted x00m4g just need a way to login and not force close when i try to access something. Hopefully someone can hack this apk like they did for the netflix app.
Unrooted stock Xoom WiFi. Installs and operates, but FCs whenever I try to watch or buy anything. Needs some tweaking to make it work on the Xoom, evidently.
I have a non-rooted xoom Wi-Fi and it FC's every time.
Has anyone been able to get Amazon Video to play on the Xoom w/out FC?
