Have you guys noticed a discrepancy in the amount of free ram being shown in third party apps and the android task manager? Where in third party apps like system info widget my free ram is around 90 while in the native android manager its around 170. Whats going on?
Hmm, same issue here.
I think android manager excludes the cached apps. if you load the android manager and press menu u can see the option to see cached apps. I'm not running any third party task managers but i think this could be the reason.

What is the best paid or free task manager app?
taskiller free. available on the market
Taskiller will only kill apf you want a manager use Astro or Linda file manager.
Clinton
OI File Manager isn't too bad if you're after a simple basic file browser/manager.
astro is a bit more advanced. it has more options and will also let you backup your apps to the SD card.
Advanced Task Manager
I used to use Taskiller free version but got rid of it after I purchased Advanced Task Manager. Taskiller only lets you view running apps and has a optional home screen widget that will kill all apps. ATM does all this, also shows running processes and services in the device foreground and background, view memory footprint of everything, lets you switch to running apps, terminate apps if root is enabled, uninstall apps from within the ATM program, and create exclusion rules for the "kill all" widget. it costs $0.99 in the T-Mobile USA android market; I would have paid up to three times that probably. very good app all around.
I would like to run certain apps, like e.g. skype in the background all the time.
However the HD2 closes all apps in the background after a certain time.
I also tried duttys taskmanager, but still all apps in the background are being closed after some time automatically.
Is there any way to keep all apps in the background running, until you close them manually?
Thanks!
Apps aren't closed after a certain time, they are closed by Windows OOM - Out of Memory Handler, when your system is low on memory, or when you reach the system's limit of 32 running processes. AFAIK, you cannot configure OOM, so what you can do is close other applications. Otherwise it should have been taken care of by the application developers - OOM only closes apps with windows, so they need to write the program in a way that there's a windowless background process.
Thanks for the explanation...
But I checked and I have "only" 28 processes running.
When just opening the calculator and have it running in the background, it is closed automatically after some minutes.
So the limit of too many processes cannot be reached by that.
And also there is plenty of free memory...
I've never had any applications closed automatically...
I have the same problem.
I want to run flexmail always in the background, but it closes automatically. Probably because of memory problems. Is there a way that it gests automatically re-opened by the system by some kind of tweaking?
How much program memory do you have left?
On my device, apps get closed automatically, when about 53% of program memory is used. That is much too early I think.
On my Touch HD I had always about 65% in use.
Is there any way to set in the registry, at which threshold of memoty-usage programs get closed?
Ok, I think I got it now...
It is not caused by a 3rd party software.
The ROM has a limit of 27 processes that can run at the same time.
If you have e.g. 25 processes running and then open 2 apps running in the background, then when opening the third app closes one of the other apps in background, so that the limit of 27 processes is applied.
It is not a memory issue! Just an issue of the limit of 27 processes running at the same time!
Since I have quite some services running in the background, like battery indicator, button mapping, etc. this can be quickly an issue!
So the big question is now:
Can we rise this limit of 27 processes running simultaniously somehow, maybe with a registry tweak or anything?
I have been using advanced task killer free for a few days and have not noticed any difference in battery life. Shall i keep or uninstall?
same here, but its not bad, and its kill some appz and spece memory - so way not ?
google states that Android Users do not need to use task killers. Programs are left in memory for latter use, the system will even load programd you haven't used yet if the system thinks you might use it. These programs stored in memory use very little power and might actually use more because the program has to reload every time its used. I used task killers for a little. But now i don't.

Android doesn't need task killers really, if memory gets low then Android will close apps to free up memory, I find that if an app is using to much memory though...like a bad app the task killer is useful ..
To find out if an app is leaking memory you can donwload Watchtower for free to take a look whats going on..
I wouldn't uninstall it, just no need to use it so often..Android usually looks after itself..most of the time.
Task killers are actually a very bad idea. Many apps are making use of a background services, killing them as well (what most blind killers do) will result in a totally unpredictable behavior.
As a developer I really hate them. I have one app which totally depends on a background service. I get sometimes really weird error reports... questioning a little further always reveils that taskkillers have blown away the back-end of this app.
Task killers are stupid. Android has a linux base. The linux way is to cache a bunch of data into memory to allow apps to start and run faster.
How much free memory you are showing is actually meaningless because should an app require more memory the kernel will reallocate memory to the active task, automatically stripping it from idle tasks.
If you are trying to save power what its relevant is which apps are using cpu cycles. As fat as I know the only task killer type app which monitors cpu usage instead of memory usage is Watchdog.

i was looking through the available ram after flashing a new rom. I installed the multitasking pro app saying i have 120mb left, also the same at other app e.g. task killer app,
But the ram showing in the "android setting -> running service" saying i have 180mb ram left, which is always about 50-60mb more.... I just wondering what is going on??
No matter what Rom or device the free memory shown under settings>manage applications>running services all ways shows higher than a proper task manager. The task manager is normally the correct figure.
Do Androids dream of electric sheep?
In the settings --> apps --> running it says i am using 613MB of RAM but all he processes that it shows add up to around a 100.
How do i see what ALL of the processes that the tablet is running?
ES task manager, then show system apps. Works well for me, needs root to work though.
