[Q] What is the bug report file? - myTouch 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I just came across a folder on the root of my SD card named "bug reports".
What is this? Is it system related, application related or??
The thing was 2.49 GB. I'd like to know how to turn it off as it interferes, basically halts, my application and data backups.
Can anyone help?

tech support adviced today that the "bug report" folder is created (sd-card) by the pushing three times volume bottons (+ & - TOGETHER)

Mic gain and "scratchy sound" / default.acdb (Not the robo error)

A issue that need som attention:
In all the latest kernels I have used, the mic gain is to high on the HD2.
To fix this we previously could rename or delete default.acdb. The downside whit this fix now is that i get an "system has stopped" error after rebooting and i dont know if this affects other parts of the build/kernel as well.
I know this is a issue that several other have as well but as it seems not everybody.
Maybe this issue is something the great devs of XDA should adress? Great work by the way.
The thread with the previous fix:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=805002&highlight=default.acdb
I've had this fix (renaming/deleting default.acdb) done on many builds and it never showed me an error message or any evidence of a problem.
Maybe you're passing data.img file from build to build and not starting with a new fresh
one?
Always fresh when changing build/kernel.
But strange if its only me that get the error.
If this should be looked at by devs offcourse depends on how many that this issue conserns.
I know the default.acdb is to find in at least two places:
/system/etc/firmware (this is the location I renamed default.acdb)
"and"
/etc/firmware
I have tried to rename the file in the other location as well but that really made my phone go crazy.
I only rename the one at: /system/etc/firmware
This is just to solve for me the mic gain so that others won't think I am in some factory.
hey oyvpet. you are the only other person that seems to have the same issue i have. I posted the same question in the mdj revolution 1.7 build thread because it was the first build that gave me this issue but now it's happening in mdj's desire hd 4.0 build as well. i guess it's not build specific but it does not happen on all builds for me.
no one else seemed to have the same issue so i figured out a way to fix it by trying a number of things and i actually did come up with a working solution. just renaming default.acdb gives a force close at start-up, as does deleting/moving the file completely. What seems to work for me is replacing it with a dummy file.
step 1 - download the installation file "es file explorer.apk" and put it on your SD card.
step 2 - using root explorer for the rest of the steps, delete default.acdb from system/etc/firmware.
step 3 - rename "es file explorer.apk" - "default.acdb"
step 4 - drag your "new" default.acdb from your sd card location to system/etc/firmware.
step 5 - full restart back to WM (not hot restart)
android will now boot up normally, without a force close error and your friends will not complain about you talking to them on your phone, in the shower with the water running.
i don't know if other apk's work. i did try root explorer.apk too and it did fix the force close at start-up but i still had the loud echo on the other end.
good luck.

"bugreports" folder on SD card

I've been having some SD card issues lately. Primarily, it is filling up constantly. I would delete photos, videos, and music, and a day or two later it would be nearly full again. Started digging through folders on the card and came across a folder named "bugreports." This folder seems to fill itself daily with 50 MB .txt files that contain a bunch of system dump information. I deleted 8 or 9 of them on Sunday and now have 6 more present. File title is: bugreport-2011-01-31-13-00-29.txt for example. Essentially they are bugreport-year-month-day-hour-minute-second.txt. They are generated throughout the day. A lot of mentions of Wifi in the text, as well as a few mentions of Root Explorer. Don't know what else really. A 50 MB text file contains a LOT of text. I would post one, but I'm concerned about personal information in the files... and it's 50 MB!
Only other reference I found to this problem was here: http://forum.androidcentral.com/htc-mytouch-4g/51568-bugreports-file.html
Not a lot of responses. Hopefully this gets a bit more discussion here.
Any ideas as to what could be generating these files and WHY?

My guess is Wifi calling which is an absolute must for me out here in the sticks. Any suggestions?
EDIT: Forgot to mention. I'm occasionally temp rooted for Titanium Backup. As of this morning I have some Apps frozen, but this problem precedes the frozen apps.
Thanks,

I think it might be because you're temp rooted. Try perma-rooting and see if that fixes your issues
This happened to me on my Nexus One all the time. When rooted, pressing the Volume up and trackball buttons at the same time caused it to make a log dump.
Did it almost every time I pulled it from my pocket, and it bogged down the phone too. Might be a similar issue for you.
Okay... That is a possibility. I've felt the phone randomly vibrate in my pocket yet there is no message or notification. This generally would happen when I would move in such a way that the phone had pressure on it. I've not checked to see whether or not new dump files were created along with the vibration. Will check next time it happens.
Did you ever come up with a fix?
Sent from my HTC Glacier using XDA App
Well today I had the phone go through a number of random vibration events and subsequently there were about 5 more bugreport files generated this morning. SD filled up to capacity and now only only mounts read only. Can't delete the files from my phone (need to plug sd in to a computer) and can't access the sd card at all if I try to go to /sdcard.
I also have a directory called /mnt. In this directory there are three folders: asec, sdcard, and secure. If I click secure, I end up in a folder with the same three folders. In fact, I could go to the directory /mnt/secure/secure/secure/secure/... On and on until the file system errors out which force closes the file explorer. The asec folder contains app data for two apps that have components installed on the sd. The sdcard folder contains the entire contents of my sdcard which I can't even view by looking at /sdcard. It is all visible if I look at/mnt/sdcard. I don't get it.
This is getting odd and rather annoying. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Did you ever figure this out?
I am seeing these files on an HTC Inspire 4G.
Did u try formatting the sd card? Theres probly a currupt file somewhere & causin it to act up?? Ive never heard of this issue before?

I haven't tried doing anything to fix this. The last "bugreport" file was 5 days ago. I'm going to see if I can figure out if it correlates with anything (debugging apps, force closes, etc.)
I just cleared the 'bug reports' folder in my sd card and I have noticed the random vibrating while pressing the volume. Is there any way to disable this?
Is any one figured out of these dumps?
Is anybody have update on these dumps?
I have HTC Inspire (Froyo 2.2.1) it has also generated random dumps. I also noticed couple of random vibrations but haven't checked that it generates dump or not.
Also i haven't noticed that any of the application crashed in past 1 month which can generate dump. Seems everything works fine but still i can see atleast 2-3 dumps generated daily on random time.
They are generated when the menu and back keys are pressed simultaneously.

One quick reminder...
After you delete the 'bug reports' folder it is stored in your .trashes
Go into Astro and delete all files in .trashes but since so far there is no fix for disabling this just repeat this every few weaks.
Saved me 5gb

Agree, although can't confirm which buttons. If you press those buttons, you will get your phone to vibrate and you'll see the bug report on sd
Happened to new several times. Case closed?

Noticed the same thing on my Glacier... Bugreport directory filled with dump files. Confirmed pushing the Back and Menu keys simultaniously generates the files. Couldn't generate the file with my wifes Glacier phone. Figured it wasn't an Andriod thing, it must be a particular app I have on my phone. Killed apps one at a time and kept trying the menu/back key. When I killed Oruxmaps, the menu/back key wouldn't generate the bugreport files. When I reloaded the Oruxmaps I could do the menu/back keys to generate the bugreport files. I've got an email into the developer for confirmation that it's coming from that app.
My earlier post pointing a finger at OruxMaps was wrong. Sorry Orux. Turns out the log is created by ADB. Take a look at:
ht-tp://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/Logcat (delete the dash between the ht-tp for the link to work, system wouldn't let me post a link. Don't worry, it's not spam.)
See 'magic key combinations'
Looks like a smoking gun to me...

Afters routing my Nexus S, I experienced the crashreports as well. I found out that activating 'USB debugging', as adviced by Titanium Backup, caused the problem. So (temp) switching off debug mode solved the problem for me.
BTW the 3 quick vibrates for android usually means that a app in the background has crashed and that is what usually generates a bug report.
hi

[Q] need help on the elocity a7

Everyone mod is working i geuss except for mines i don't know what am doing wrong.
i tried to mod mine with the dexter mod 1.41 and mines wont work,
1st- i download the file didn't unzip it then i sent it to the SD card and rename it "update.zip".
2nd- i did the factory wipe/reset then i select to wipe all data
3rd- i select update.zip but i notice an message saying( E. can't read from SD card, or something like that). i dont know if that is apart of the mod or what.
4th- when it is finish then i select reboot option and when it is done rebooting i get nothing new. can you help me out are do you know something that i might be doing wrong. i also did do the 1.42 patch aswell didn't work. are is there any other newer way to do it are what. Even if you can write step by step on how to do it properly.
PLEASE HELP ME OUT.
Did your a7 have a sdcard problem before the attempt ?
And even tho it sed it can't read sdcard, did it proceed to install anyway ?
yes it did go ahead with the installation, but it is during the installation process where i saw something about can't read error, i jus got it yesterday then i did the new update from elocity website. then i tried al,ost all of dexter's mod
these are the exat message i got was (E:can't open/usb/update.zip)
(E:Can't mount USB:update.zip)
then underneath that it say (Finding update package)
then it say (Wait for 5 second)
(Installation time out)
(installation aborted)
(Formatting MISC)
these are all the thing it say during installation
Does your a7 read, mount and unmount the sdcard stock?
What is the path to the update.zip?
Sorry for all the questions, I'm just trying to get on the same page
Sent from my Mynized EVo 4G
I'm having just about the same problem. Will be interested to hear any helpful suggestions. At this point, the only thing that is working is to do the factory reset and use the basic version again. I keep getting a message that "update.zip" (although I named it "Update.zip") is a bad file. I also did not get "apply sdcard:update.zip" as a menu option, only "apply:update.zip", which when clicked did read the sd card, then gave the bad file message.
update
Lemme clarify first then update. I bought the A7 in February and loaded the most current Dexter mod at that time. It's been running beautifully until this week. Over a period of days, the A7 started acting up until it was no longer usable at all. First, the BlueTooth cut out, then the WiFi, then it just got stuck and was repeatedly lighting up the Elocity logo, but never fully booting up.
Elocity support said to do the Factory reset, which I did and it was back to baseline again. Trying to install the latest version of Dexter is where my problem started. (end of history)
So, now the update for this evening: I tried every version of Dexter's mods and got the "bad" file message each time, even after downloading them again to be sure I wasn't using a corrupted copy. However, my A7 will wipe, then update with Elocity Firmware 2.0134 and read it just fine on the exact same SD card when renamed "Update.zip".
So, now I have a very frustrated boy with autism who can't do his Google Voice search anymore and the Android Marketplace doesn't let me download the apps I already bought for him. We're back to where we were when it arrived out of the box in February, but unable to restore what we had.
I have to think there's a conflict between Dexter's Mods and the new firmware, even after one wipes everything. I even tweeted Dexter (and I don't *do* Twitter!) to see if he could respond for help and am waiting for a response.
Can someone please help? Thanks!!
Sounds like your having issues with the files you download, I have gotten in the habit of not renaming the update file to just that until its on the usb card. Seen to many messages like yours if I saved one update over a prior with the same name. Try download 1.41 and 1.42 leave their names the way they are and save them to folder on your computer. Copy them bother to sd-card leaving names the same still. once both are there rename 1.41 to Update. Remove card from pc put in tablet. Use the recovery system method (press then hold power button method) do wipe, clear cache, the use update option. If this is successful which it should be delete the 1.41 file on card that you renamed to Update, this can be done on tablet or computer. Once that file is gone rename the 1.42 to Update and once again flash from recovery system.
Hope that solves your issue
Make it a habit to not save an update over top of another, though it seems like it would keep you from having to rename but for me it always seemed to corrupt the file.
thanks! I'll give that a try. I notice you said "PC", but I have a Mac ... could that be part of the issue ... downloading to Mac, then moving the file to SD or USB? (could be a stupid question, but if I don't ask, that makes me even more ignorant)

Do you end up with a folder or a zip file? Safari has a bad habit of extracting zips when it downloads them. Search my posts, there is a long ranting one that covers issues with both PC and Mac.
they're zipped ... I use Firefox 4.0, when the option comes up at download, I always click "save", not "open". Thanks, though.
well, problem solved. I ran Bestial's gapps patch over top of the new eLocity firmware and i have full functionality again. very happy mom here! now to reload all those apps for my boy! =D
Wow, I'm glad you found a solution...I have been following the thread and was getting worried.
I had the same problem after downloading the newest elocity update and then trying dexter's mod. I found out my problem is that I renamed the file "update.zip". If you just rename the file to" update" then it loaded fine. Not totally sure why this worked and maybe it was just my case, but maybe it will help some of you out!

No. Your problem was that you were using a windows machine and your file extensions were hidden (I am psychic, but don't worry, I won't tell anyone your pin number). She is using a Mac, no hidden file extensions.
How do you get to the gapps patch? I'm really having trouble getting any updates on my a7. seems like its not taking anything off the sdcard. i brought a new card and I'm still having the same issue.

bestialbub's patch for google apps (to use the market) can be found at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1019846 with the instructions
It's still working very well for us ... several weeks later.
Good luck!

[Q] Cache folder shows 100% usage

Hello all,
I actually have an Acer S120 but I figured I would give it a try anyway as it seems to be an Android issue rather than device specific. I recently tried to update my phone to 2.3.4 using Gingerounay 2.0 (made by Vache over at MoDaCo). Anyway it seems that after flashing, I am no longer able to download apps from the market, which is caused by my Cache folder "thinking" it is 100% full. I have tried to clear this folder through recovery, through fastboot, adb & through ES File explorer on the phone itself but i'm not getting any results. The only folder/file that is showing up is the lost+found folder but there are no files within this directory. I am able to successfully clear out the lost+found directory but still my cache reflects 100% usage.
I am really not sure what to do at this point and I'm hoping someone here has some ideas to help me out.
Thanks in advance.
Are you sure the access rights are correct?
The folder should be r/w and have rwxrwx--- (or 770) new files created there should have access: rw-rw-rw (or 666) or at least; that is the behavior on my Acer Liquid E (Android 2.2)
Thanks for the reply. I have already sent my phone back for service and they ended up replacing the entire board. I tried everything to clear it and apparently it was a H/W issue...hopefully no one else runs into the same problem.
Oddly enough; only problem I had due to the full/corrupted cache was that I couldn't download apps from the market. I was able to install from my SD card though.
FYI for this thread. If anyone else experiences this problem; its a hardware problem. My phone was sent back to Acer and they had to replace the board to fix the issue. Hopefully no one else encounters this!

[Q] AmericanAndroid SD boot problem

Hi,
This is my first time with android - that's why I'm trying SD.
All went ok for about 3 days - I tried many apps from the market & all of a sudden my phone rebooted!
When it booted again I saw the lock screen & can see the tiny icons on the status bar then it just reboot again!
After several attempts I got it booting but most of the apps now force close - my contacts are gone so as my SMS.
Any idea what might caused something like that? is Android so vulnerable that
installing some application can cause a total loss of the system?
- Do I need to re-install every thing again?
- will deleting data.img is enough to force a clean install?
- Is there a way to restore my old data from data.img?
- Is there a recommended book to upgrade from a noob to an educated user?
Thanks,
it's strange because when Americn android craches, it should bootloop.
here's a couple of suggestions:
backup the valuable contents of your SD card then search for file system errors, if your card has a corrupt file here and there it might be the one causing the problem, for the how to, it's in my troubleshooter, check my sig.
Usually a fresh data.img file is considered a clean install unless you've messed with root explorer (or any similar app) and did something wrong to your sytem files.
I'm not sure how to get the data back, I know you can access the data.img contents using a special tool, see here for info http://www.howtoforge.com/access-linux-partitions-from-windows
there's also a tool on softpedia to do so.
but you can try to look for the SMS data somewhere on your data.img, extract them to your harddrive, then copy them back using android explorer. I haven't tried it, and theoretically it might work, but I can not guarantee it.
My advice is that don't put too much pressure on the device, it's running Android from the SD which is not designed to work as NAND. let the device take a breath for a few seconds after each installation, it may say it finished, but it's still doing something in the background, I learned that the hard way. and always backup our data before you do something new.
and yes, if you use a fresh data.img you will have to install everything again.
