Google Search Suggestions - Droid X General

I don't know about a lot of you but I like using the search suggestions when using the Google search on my phone. Out of the blue the other day, my phone no longer displays suggestions. It happened after I installed a different keyboard, but even after i tried uninstalling it, suggestions still do not show. Any ideas?

Are you talking about the search function inside a browser or when you press the search button?
You may want to to unistall and reinstall the app

When I press the search button. And suggested search is on in the preferences.

Ok, my suggestion would be to uninstall the app, and then re-install it. Do you know if Google Search is installed as a data app or a system app? Easy way to check: go to settings > applications > manage applications > all, find google search, and try to uninstall it, if you can, it is data, if not, it is system.

Its system lol

Do you have root? You are also going to need a file explorer with root permissions such as root explorer or es file explorer

Yes I'm rooted. Yes I have file explorer w/ root access

Alright, go to /system/app and delete the google search app. BE SURE TO WRITE DOWN THE NAME OF THE FILE, YOU WILL NEED IT LATER. Go to the market, install google search. This actually may work, press the search button to see if you get anything. If not, copy the app from /data/app to /system/app and be sure to name it what it was before. Reboot and it should work

Uninstalled adfree

I uninstalled adfree but ads in my browser are still being blocked. I believe I should have made the "revert" selection before uninstalling the app. How can I get back to a normal browser?
Sent from my DROIDX using XDA App
I'm not sure if this will work, but it's worth a try
Install adfree, hit revert, uninstall
You probably have to reboot the phone after reverting
This is because it permanently writes to your hosts file. I believe it can be found in /etc. Uninstalling the adfree app does not revert the changes unfortunately. (just providing an explanation...in case anyone was wondering)

To get ads back you would have to flash an sbf. Instructions can be found very easily if you look around.
Just wondering: why would you want ads back anyway?
Well, you could edit the hosts file and remove the entries added by adfree. They are all redirected to the loopback address at 127.0.0.1. The only entry in hosts should be localhost. You can open this file as a text file in any good file manager to see what I'm talking about.
i had to uninstall adfree also. The reason is, lot of links I want to go to, are redirected through these services (slickdeals.com ?) . Installing adfree means those links come up as broken when clicked.
Simply re-install adfree and hit revert. That was the solution. Thanks to all who replied.

Hide / Rename Apps from App Drawer?

Hi Guys,
There are certain apps that I would like to hide from the App Drawer in my Tab since my friends are literally all over the tab and snooping around in my messages or photos or even password protection apps. Could you tell me of any possibility of Hiding apps from the App drawer or probably RENAMING them to a less catchy title?
Your help is much appreciated,
cheers!
There's only two ways of doing this.....
1. Route your phone and then using a Root Explorer rename the App.
2. Use an alternative Home App.
If you use Launcher Pro one of the options it has is to hide Apps from the App Drawer.
You would have to go back through the menu to un-hide them but it might work for you.
Launcher Pro
Menu>Preferences>General>Hide Apps
Btw, you have ****ty friends...

Beards,
Thanks for the reply. Now, i have rooted my tab and currently on Roto JMI v2. I have installed root explorer. Could you please guide me how to change the name from within ROOT EXPLORER. I mean, the directory / path of the apps? I tried myself but no luck
Cheers & Much Appreciated!
You should be able to simply mount the system/app folder and rename the App in question.
Can you confirm you have done a reboot.
If so Root Explorer should work as normal.

I have done a reboot, and can see various files in the root explorer along with the option to mount. But I am unable to see the apps that I have installed from the market. For example : Catch Notes is one app I installed but can't locate it in root explorer so that I can rename or modify it.
Cheers!

Sorry but if the App is not showing in a search you must have a problem with your rooting or the file manager.
Installed Apps would show in System/App
Easy work around if they aren't super tech savvy. Get launcherpro and hide the apps in question

Which file explorer are you using? I can't seem to find one that will let me rename, or change permissions. Thanks!

Is the ChromeBookmarksSyncAdapter.apk supposed to sync my bookmarks? I placed it into the system folder, and renamed the two apps in there already, rebooted and the Browser showed up, and works just fine, but I don't see any option to sync my browser. I went into Settings - Add Account, but only my apps (like facebook, and google) are shown, not the browser. Any ideas on how to get that working?

You have to go to Settings, Google, click on your gmail. Browser should show up there, and you can put a checkmark beside it to enable syncing,

Google Maps?

So I'm rooted with the De La Vega method and it works great. As we all know, the new google maps v7 will not allow you to do a lot of things that the old versions would allow. I've found some older APKs from v6 and previous, but when I go to install, it will not allow it. Any ideas why, or how to get around it?
I'm interested in this as well. Plus the navigation voice is so robot like and it can hardly pronounce street names properly.

You can change the speech from Samsung to Google speech engine, sounds MUCH better. The method is somewhere in these forums.

I'd imagine maps is a system app, so using a file explorer go to system> apps and replace the maps apk with your older one, change permissions and reboot.

Sorry I'm not familiar with es file explorer. I use root explorer and just long press the file and select change permissions. Maybe try changing the extension of the original apk to something like .bak before you copy the new apk then you could always go back if you wanted the newest version again.

Once I downloaded the correct app to allow permission changes, I was able to rename the v7 file, copy over the v6 file and rebooted with no problems. However, the application didn't show up in the app list. So, I had to then install that same APK and everything works great. I now have all of my stored maps back!
What can't u do on v7?

There are several places online that have archives. I also had my APKs all backed up in such an event.
If you get blackout updater (Google play) or in Android themes. The blacked out version of Google maps is the last V6 version. I was glad to have the map view back.

What's the name of the app in the system /app folder. I'm on alpha 10 and I just want to remove it and install from the play store. I deleted "velvet" bbut Google is still there. Just need the 41q on a fix or a way to delete the Google search so I can reinstall it. Thanks.
Thanks
