So I bricked my phone. This time couldn't recover. Warranty replaced it, got my replacement the next day. I've never had a problem rooting before, but this time I can't seem to get anything to work. I'm wondering if they sent me a phone with some type of root protection, if that's even possible. Please help, this really sucks. Tried Superoneclick repeatedly, different versions. Univ Androot doesn't support Sammies (at least not ours). Z4Root doesn't work. Tried Oclf and in the recovery menu I get E:signature verification failed Installation aborted. What do I do?
Last resort (well, actually first resort too): flash adrynalyne's clean rom... That has root built in...
of course you need cwm working to do so....

Hmmm
Ok, I have only previously installed CWmod (once rooted) via Rom manager. Now, not having root, I dl'd cwmod_v08 and dropped the recovery and update.zip on my sdcard. I reboot, holding volume up/volume down. I select apply sdcard:update.zip, and I'm still getting a signature verification error, just like I got when I attempted this via OCLF. I read online that it is a problem with Android System Recovery <3e>, and to revert to 2e to remove the signature verification, but I already show 2e. WTF? I'm about to retrieve my hammer and root this piece Thor-style!
Haven't used Odin, but I guess it's time...
First off, lol @ the Thor thing.. haha
Second, yeah it is definitely time... just make sure you are flashing just the adryn_cwm_recovery4 ( something like that) file in the guide in this thread xP
And make sure you use pda, not phone....
If you still can't get it working, just ask here....
Also, before I'm done... i highly suggest not flashing a full dump in Odin.... just saying xP there is a corrupt version out there ( not on purpose)

Ok, I'm using Odin 4.28 and it looks different than all the vid tutorials I'm finding...cwm_recovery_test4_adryn.tar is on my desktop, but when I hit PDA and try to select it (the tar file) it says "Invalid Image Type"...
Newer definitely doesn't always mean better xP i suggest downloading another, older, version...

The link is bad for the update.zip file in the *Official* Clockwork Recovery thread. I flashed using odin3 and it seemed to work but when I attempt to apply the update.zip My little android turns into a caution sign-holding android error screen. Don't know if I did something wrong with Odin or if the update.zip files I am able to find online are wrong for loading clockwork with this particular recovery image (the tar is the image, correct? lmao) Help! Please! I'll send you good vibes and spiritual cookies!
Lmao, i love you xP
I would say first trying to push all of the soft keys and see if it pops up then...
That has happened to me before, and I didn't know what was going on either xP

Why not just 1-click root it ?

I did use one-click root personally, but I've had other users on another forum ask if they could use this as they wanted to root without using a computer. And I'm always open to another root option - just wanted to get the developers' opinions on it.

Rom manager will not work on the stock kernel on the epic- I wish that Rom manager included that in the support notes- you need a custom kernel - your best bet is to install noobnl clockworkmod

I have tried EVERYTHING to get into ClockworkMod with no luck. At first I tried rom manager and when I found out it wouldn't work I uninstalled it and downloaded tried to use one click and the 3 finger method and no green :-( I'm positive I'm rooted because z4 said I'm rooted, I can take screen shots, I have setcpu, I have titanium backup, root explorer, you get the point and the are all running without problems. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what I'm doing wrong? I am the first to admit I'm a total "noob" as you all call it when it comes to anything involving technology but I want to try and theme. I also had previously tried one click root on both my windows pc and my pc running linux. I'm sure I'm just missing something obvious lol.
PS yes I have superuser and it grants permission when running root apps also I sucessfully installed busybox if that matters...I'm just dirt duh der I'm sure
I already backed everything and returned my phone to stock again and that didn't help. It gives me the same message at boot up as the poster above if it matters

I had this problem as well. I ended up having to download and use the super one click root method that has clockworkmod recovery built in. make sure you have the sdk installed and place the unzipped one click folder in the tools folder of the sdk. Also download the correct drivers for your computer. I originally rooted with z4root and was in the same boat as you, you can check out the thread I started to get the answer just search ( can I flash froyo beta with out root or clock work???) Shouldn't be to hard to find. Good luck. If you need any help pm me.

Is it normal that when my phone is in usb dubugging that it pops up an error and won't allow me to connect my usb to a computer? Its a new thing. Everything is backed up on 2 different computers so I think I'm going to try and return my Epic to stock. Maybe that will help, maybe not

I just rooted my 2.2 vibrant! (came stock with 2.2) ! now im trying to flash clockworkmod but i get this error when i re-installl packages in the vibrant recovery screen.??
Can someone please show me a step by step on how to probprly make a 2.2 vibrant recongnize the clockwork recovery screen?!
You would have to ODIN to a ROM that comes with the 2E recover such as (eugenes froyo that doesnt brick) or a kernel that you can odin that has a modified 3E recovery that disables signature checking. Once you do that you can flash a kernel that has clockwork embeded into it such as overstock, tigers blood, voodoo, eugenes dead horse.
i think i need a step by step way too noob to understand what 3e and 2e is and what is ODIN i hear soo much about it! I bought the phone with 2.2 already on it so i havnt used ODIN at all to update my firmware!
Read the vibrant bible for about a week then try messing with your phone.

your easiest method to get CWM working (and i'm assuming your end goal is to flash a rom) is to odin BACK to JFD (the stock shipped 2.1 rom for the vibrant) and then flash your rom.
There is no other easier way to do it (especially since you're not really sure what odin is, so using the other method to replace the stock 3e recovery with a fixed 3e recovery requires SOME technical knowledge of mounting partitions and getting root using superoneclick).
I sEE its starting to make sense now! After i switch back toJFD using ODIN will i have to re root my phone or does it stay rooted?

if you're end goal is to flash a rom, and you've already used CWM before using the update.zip method, unless you've deleted the update.zip from your sdcard, there is no need to root when using 2e recover (the stock 2.1 recovery) to get CWM working. You will have to manually boot up the phone into recovery (using vol+ and vol- and power) and then reinstall packages.
Thanks alot i appreciate the help! Ill try this after work and report back if i had any more issues.
ODIN a stock+voodoo kernel, reboot to recovery, flash a rom with cwm

If you're entire goal is to get root in order to flash a Rom, why go through all the trouble (which by the confusion your having, there will be) just to flash a custom Rom?
The easiest way is to odin jfd to your phone. Then put the cwm update.zip on your internal sd card as well as your Rom of choice and flash that way.
The way that you're currently wanting to do requires you to get at the very least temp root, mount /system as rw, the copy over a modified recovery file, all assuming you don't run into errors about having enough free space on /system.
Now, which way seems easier?
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
Wouldnt it be ezr to download the recovery 3e.zip to your download file on phone directly from the internet, then copy the zip file and move to the appropriate file on phone useing a file manager ..then just robooting to recovery reonstallingand completly avoiding a computer
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
Well, you have to have root first. To get rust on your 2.2 rom requires a computer and there's also the fact that you may not even have enough room on your /system partition. If it were easier, the easier method would have been told to you within the first 3 posts.

i dont think my radio is fine anymore, i was too impatient that i flashed the dl09 radio.
well i did alot, i cant really tell you what i did in exact order because there was too much at 4 in the morning after working on this for 6 hours but here we go:
odin cwm recovery
used new update.zip from cwm forum
tried flashing adryns rom and imnuts kernel
tried flashing dj20 system and kernel
fixed permissions
tried nandroid restore
used "magical fix"
had to reinstall my drivers for samsung because of magical fix
repartition device via odin
reflashed dj20 system and kernel via odin
radio file not working so i flashed dl09(because i was too impatient and panicking)
turned on, set up phone, turn off, download mode,
odin cwm recovery with former update.zip
cwm flashed adrynalynes rom and peanutbutterjelly kernel
rebooted, then rebooted back to recovery,
restored nandroid backup
phone works once again
i do not know if that helps, well thats all i did, and i believe it was it that order

OK, try reflashing CWM 5.0.2.7 first. then do a Factory Data reset in CWM then flash the ROM right after. Don't use ROM Manager. See how that works. If you tried the MTD version then use that one. You may want to Odin back to BML with repartition checked if you want to try that one.

very helpful information. I have read a lot about people having issues with bad downloads. Nice to know you can check them like that. I have noticed in flashing various roms that I have come across some random glitches. Perhaps this could be the culprit. Thanks again.
Users should ALWAYS verify the integrity of ROM downloads using the md5 sums posted by the developer. If you download directly to your phone you can use the "properties" view in Root Explorer. If you've got it on your PC you can use the utilities found here - http://www.winmd5.com/
