Yeah, I was already in the Nexus One forum by mistake. I have it bookmarked and brought it up by default, then realized afterwards lol.
So, I posted there too

Wow is this awesome. I live HTC just for the fact they listened and realized and changed their mind. They deserve to make a ton of money for this alone.

so ytf did they do it in the first place
it's a bit late isn't it? the sensation and flier are already locked...

Great news for the XDA & HTC gang!!

Good move by HTC lol. Motorola should be following its leader and listen to us too since they don't know how to make a decent skin

This will keep us all happy i think.

To bad it wouldn't apply to old HTC. But great news!

Are they going to release updates to unlock bootloaders on existing phones? Seems like a bit of a slap to say this just after they've released a new line of phones (Desire S, Sensation, Incredible S)?
Still, better this than nothing.

Cool move.. HTC+Android rulez

There has been no comment yet as to whether they will make this retro to other devices. There is no technical impediment to doing so although resources would have to be applied to it on their end. Mentioned on another forum was that even if they do not go there themselves they can back door it to any number of sources in the community. I picked up an sgs2 right as they came but might have waited a little longer and looked harder at the sensation if I had known they were going to reverse their corporate direction regarding locked bootloaders.

It would be cool if they fully unlock the bootloader on the Nexus One. We currently don't have fastboot access to all the partitions.

Just an update to this, in case anyone missed it.
Yesterday androidandme report HTC is releasing an OTA to unlock the bootloaders of the Sensation..

Yep, does look better for the Sensations unlocked bootloader. Another article at tmonews here

Nice lawsuit.
Nice thread.

I hope samsung gets rolled on like saddam's army.
I would love to see this lawsuit go somewhere, but the only one that will benefit is lawyers. Phone makers just wont announce any updates until they are ready to be released fearful of lawsuits.

The i9000 does. And the canadians.
Its just the US.
And I think samsung purposely told tmo to not release the update because it would impeed sales of the vibrant 4g, which would definitely be against the law since all galaxy s phones were launched with the specific statement of "will be upgraded to android 2.2"

HTC Unlock bootloader and disable NAND protection campaign

UPDATE
"There has been overwhelmingly customer feedback that people want access to open bootloaders on HTC phones. I want you to know that we've listened. Today, I'm confirming we will no longer be locking the bootloaders on our devices. Thanks for your passion, support and patience," Peter Chou, CEO of HTC
What is the point of this?
The idea of this is to convince htc to unlock the bootloaders and disable the NAND protection on their phones
Why should I support this?
Unlocking the bootloader and disabling the NAND protection will allow users to keep their phones up to date using custom roms such as CM7. Take the htc wildfire for example. In december 2010, HTC released a 2.2 update for the wildfire. However, hidden in this update was a new bootloader which could not (and still can not as of the 15th may 2011) be modified. It is unlikely that HTC will release another update for this phone, meaning that users are going to be stuck on this rom. The reason? So HTC can sell new phones. However what this is doing is putting users off buying HTC's devices since rival companies have announced that the users can easily unlock the bootloaders on their devices.

What does everyone else think
Sent from my GT-P1000 using XDA App
It is an nice intiative, but as already stated in other toppics, htc will for sure not unlock there bootloaders. It is just this what the economy is driving on: everyone has to buy new things as much as possible. It can be done in two ways: by making a crapy device or by constanly bringing out new devices. And since the first option will make people angry and go to other manufactures, the only thing left is to make sure that every device gets outdated. And thus to lock the bootloader.
But I signed the petition anyway, perhaps it will make them go searching for other options to make money.

Can New EVO's be Rooted Still?

Seriously considering going back from the 3d to the original EVO as the new one...mine at least, simply has too many problems that get in the way of actually doing work on the thing.
Can a new off the shelf EVO with the current software build still be rooted?
I did search but didn't find an answer to this specific question so any help would be greatly appreciated.,
If it has 2.3.3 and the radio is s-on you're out of luck....for now.

quite funny on how you did a search, this Topic is plastered all over xda and android central about not being able to root with a 2.3.3
On the other hand, i've heard plenty of rumors that they 2.3.3 was recalled and they are not updating now.. which sucks because I got mine with a 2.3.3 and hate not being rooted
But will HTC really unlock the 4G now that the 3D is out? I've not been able to find anything anywhere that specifically states that the 4G will be unlocked in the future. I'm pestering them on Facebook and so far they've refused to say that they have any intentions of unlocking the bootloader.
i doubt htc will unlock evo 4g. this will have to be done by devs.
htc said they will try to unlock future phones... not past phones.
it started with evo3d & sensation.
locked htc botloader is not new... evo 4g has always had it...this new one must have some type of new security.
It is too bad that they can't put the previous bootloader back on the phone through an update or something. At least that could be worked through.

Given that the source code is out there, would any of the custom rom developers be working on it? or do they wait for an official samsung release before customising. I am new to the whole thing
Hell, if one of them wanted to go crazy with it they could make a fortune selling it at a couple bucks a pop It's probably against the spirit of the whole thing though.

The source code for ICS has not been released yet and won't be until the Galaxy Nexus is released.
When it is released, ICS ROMs will be a dime a dozen. Some will be great, some will suck ****. With Cyanogenmod being free, no one will pay for another rom. Charging for a hacked rom might also land someone in some legal hot water.

Could you not see that happening?
I just got off from live chat with verizon and the rep told me that she does not know if it will get an ics update but it will more then likely. I can about guarantee you none of these reps know anything about any of this they just have a list to of catch phrases to say for each phone to keep the customers content until there contract is up, or they get the one year upgrade.
Just got off from another chat with a different agent and she said there is no way for them to confirm any kind of update for the device. I have screenshots if you want proof.
Typical Verizon run around. I don't think they have a damn clue.
I doubt they do the rep tired to sell me the galaxy nexus, she was going on and on about it already having ics on it and i should get that phone if i wanted ics. I told her that if verizon doesnt update the play there isnt a chance i would upgrade my device i would switch networks.
