In a few days, a shiny new droid x arrives at my door. I want to root and rom, take it from bloatware verizon locked efuse moto blur to as close as I can get it to pure android. I've taken a locked stock dell streak and got it where I want it, but where do I begin with a droid x? I am still pretty new to this. Please suggest.

I havent covered all the roms, but highly suggest liberty 1.5 with the crystal X theme...
If you want a true (or as close to possible rom) try cobalt under droid x android development. Matt4542 built it from google source, not Moto's and he has some cool "extras" in it as well...

Thanks, I will start with those.

LauncherPro.
LauncherPro.
LauncherPro.
And......
LauncherPro.
Then check out Miren Browser, Car Home, Rock Player, Nesoid, Gmote, Multicon and PowerAmp.
After accidently bricking my phone and bringing it back to life, i'd recommend that you download
RSD lite
Motorola PC drivers for the Droid X
2.3.340 sbf (original verizon image or rom)
use the above programs should you accidently brick your phone.
Others would mention that you download the android SDK, i've personally never had a need for it.
download z4root, droid x boot strapper, and finally titanium backup.
Then from there read the many available guides and have fun trying the roms till you find one that you like the best.
Yes I plan on using launcher pro and rock player , I really like them on the steak, don't care much for the mirren browser. I also plan on downloading all the tools and drivers, and backing up the stock version straight out of the box before I start jacking with the x.

Fission Rom is a good "as close to stock as possible" vanilla rom.
That looks nice, I hope its compatible with the phone. I'm going to have to do some more reading and find out what software my x ships with. I'm going to try to get it the way I want before I start putting any info on it or using it for you know, my phone. I currently use a blackberry as my phone and have had a dell streak with no carrier service, just wifi since october. So I'm hoping to take the x out of the box, root and rom, then start trying to make it my phone. Instead of the other way around. Mod first, contacts and email setup later.

I'd recommend just enjoying your phone for a full week. Get used to all the blur stuff and see if you really hate it. If you decide its not for you, then I'd suggest z4root, bootstrap recovery and then Liberty 1.5. Theres so many configurations and other things going on in that rom that to me it is by far superior. Others are good, but to me, its just a complete package. Good Luck and welcome to the X Club!!

As others have said in the thread... It's great that you want to start modding right away... but here is some advice for jumping in:
1) Your phone will come with either 2.3.15 OTA (old) or 2.3.34 OTA (latest). It just depends on whether the phone was update before being shipped out. I would recommend getting the phone, and go into Settings--> About phone --> System Updates and make sure you on are the latest update.
2) Use z4root to root the phone.
3) Install droid X bootstrap and take a backup IMMEDIATELY. So many people just jump into things and forget to take a backup and have no recovery plan in the event that they break the phone of their own accord, accidentally make a mistake, or an install fails for a ROM/theme.
If you follow these basics you should be good to go as far as jumping in head first. Good luck. Check my thread if you are looking for some pointers:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=940986
if the question you have isn't answered in there..post a question in the thread and I will get back to you with an answer.
Good luck, and enjoy
Ya' ll are awesome, thank you.

Wow! I rooted and put launcher pro on the shiny new droid x and now I'm wondering if I still want to rom. My quadrant score varies from 900 to 1300 so far. Did put a few apps on and transferring pix and vids now. Probably look at rom this weekend, I think I still want to.

Just a bit of advice, make sure to take a nandroid backup before installing a custom ROM. Then you have "restore point" so to speak. I would recommend liberty 1.5 personally... And check out the Crystal X theme by Bignadad =)

New Droid X
Hello all,
I'm in the same boat here, with a 'new' Droid X which I plan on rooting and flashing over to Cricket.
My question has to do with installing the diag mode drivers under Win7 64-bit. The 32-bit drivers don't seem to work.
Thanks for any help.
fritzel67
I was able to do it without the computer, the rooting and flashing. I don't know what cricket is, but you can root, recover and rom with just the x. I've had mine 3 days and just messed with it off and on. Read a lot on this forum and looked up some things on the internet. I will try and help if I can but I really don't know that much about it yet.

Is it possible to install the files like in this guide

And have WebTop work through HDMI on the droid x?

I'm curious as well. I'd buy a BT keyboard and mouse if this worked on the X.

I don't think so. This doesn't have the functionality built in. I'm guessing there are many other service/apps that these are reliant on. If someone could hack it together though... I would definitely be excited about it. But i don't think this is possible at the time.
It should be possible if we were to install all required files/services
Kinda the same way the og droid didn't have wifi tether but was able to use the dx mynet.apk for it

I'm not an expert on this, so don't quote me on all this, but I don't believe there is the slightest chance this is happening any time soon. This is core functionality built into the Atrix, and Moto added it because the phone has a Tegra 2 processor, allowing this to actually work smoothly. If this ever was even remotely possible, it would be in the form of a ROM, not an apk.
Bet ya the webtop app has functionality that is reliant on the kernal.. Aka never gonna happen, just like miui or CM roms
No way to modify stock

Its not that simple. Just because the keys are released doesn't mean they can instantly unlock the phone and voila. This will take some time for the devs at freemymoto to test and make sure everything is valid, and that a dev-signed sbf will actually take on a retail phone without bricking it.
So to answer your question, I don't believe anyone is working on this. I'm sure that maybe down the line someone will work on it, but I don't forsee anyone putting time into this right now. I don't know that people have even figured out what the dependencies are for the web-top functionality to work. With all of this said, the Atrix has a special dock to give it "computer-like" functionality. The Droid X does not have a dock like this, so.... don't see how this would be done, unless a manufacturer builds a dock that plugs into the existing ports on the Droid X.
Webtop is achieved through hdmi only.
Sadly the bootloader crack was a hoax. We all go trolled

I have an Atrix, and a friend of mine has a Droid X, so I'm giving this a bit of a bump. I'm pretty sure it's possible. What we do know from the Atrix forums is that the webtop data is contained in the /osh directory. Hacks have been written to allow the webtop to be started without the dock using only the HDMI cable, something that was disabled in the stock ROM. It was included in the P-ROM Gingerblur, but is available separately. There is also a 1.5GB webtop image available to add root features of Debian Linux to webtop. Here's the question - anyone with the skills and cajones to try porting these hacks to Droid X? Of course make sure you know how to flash a SBF before attempting.... I'll provide links below:

That should be enough to get started on a port to Droid X. I would try it myself but my friend doesn't trust me with her phone :/ Otherwise if someone has a Droid X, bricked or not, you know what I'd do with it
im gonna bump this just because i got my friend to buy a $50 atrix lapdock with a droid x. he can at least watch movies and what not but, weptop is the main goal.

A friend is trying to sell me one atrix lapdock. Can you explain how you can watch movies with a droid x?
I would think that if you plugged in an Droid X into a lapdock it would at least charge the Droid X and possibly the HDMI interface would allow you to watch videos on the screen in the same way as the Droid X can transmit movies through it's HDMI port. What you would need is hdmi and usb extension cables as the Droid X has the HDMI and USB charging port not in the right place and you would want to have a cable long enough so that it's next to you as you'll need access to the phone to start/stop the movie. The keyboard won't likely work but I haven't tried it.
This is not really a bad value prop as for $50 you have a portable screen to watch movies like Netflix on an 11.5" screeen. Try buying an HDMI screen monitor that runs on batteries in this size range and $50 does not get you far. Then you'll think it's cool and drop some coin on a Bionic or Razr.
I've been away from the forums for awhile and obviously missed a few things. I'm running 2.2.1 with Tranquility 3.6.0 on my DX. I've been wanting to upgrade to the GB build and I believe I have all the info on how to do that, but I'm understanding that my TBH 3G Mobile Hotspot will be a problem on GB. Is this true? And is there a workable way around this problem? Any help would be most appreciated.

I think pdanet is the app that works on gb. It is no longer in the market, so you'll have to google it.
Motorola is offering the X at a stupid cheap price. I was wondering how the dev scene is for the phone? Is it fully unlocked including the kernel?
Its fully unlocked if you buy the Dev edition or T-Mobile unlocked edition, the latter lose its warranty when unlocking. As for the 'dev scene' you could find that out yourself, but there will be official CM for it.

Depends on which one your buying. Dev edition? Which carrier? Seems like most people (including myself) are just rooting and installing gravity box. The phone is so solid as is that I don't think most people feel the need to be flashaholics. Do yourself a huge favor and read up on all the development threads

I'm thinking about making the jump today as well. It's the Moto X with a wood back or the Nexus 5. Has anyone transitioned from a Nexus 4 to the Moto X?
Main thing I'm concerned with is the lack of dev's and ROM options in comparison to my Nexus.

Roms aren't in big demand here. Xposed and gravity box give all the same customizations. Plus cm based anything takes away the unique Moto x features.
If rom flashing is anyone's thing....I'd pass on the x.
Maybe when the x is done getting updates roms will start flowing....but don't see much happening before then.

To me ...reverting to stock is the simplest way.
If you absolutely don't want to lose your stuff ...you have to return it to stock piece by piece. Many threads about it already. Many.
Tho...I just transferred all my stuff to my pc ....including my titanium backup folder....pics and all that...and used rsdlite ...and put all my stuff back after. Rooted it. Restored my titanium backup. Done.

While I can agree with this partially, if AT&T and Verizon didn't junk up the firmware and change stuff that didn't need to be changed, then we wouldn't really have a legit reason to root the phone. Dev Editions are for people who want exposed modules and all that jazz, and I feel like Moto should've made a MM phone that was Dev Edition, but can't have your cake and eat it too. Again, if AT&T and Verizon used the same firmware as T-Mobile did, then I'm sure a LOT more people, including myself, would be happy and not need root.

I'm happy the USB OTG is back and the phone feels snappier. Battery life (for me) is noticeably better after a significant decline with 4.4. Good that they fixed all the bluetooth volume issues I was having with my headset (basically one volume on the LG Tone+ and when connected to the car, voice notifications came into the phone and not out of the car speakers). Also looks like some notifications have had some tweaks, such as picture auto-backup now shows a thumbnail of some of the images that were backed up. It's a REALLY good update for me.
Only thing that bugs me so far is that when you remove the USB storage, you get a notification that stays there until the next reboot.
I already had great battery life. But it seems to have gotten slightly better. Not marginal, but it was enough for me to notice. Basically getting a bit more out of a 100% charge.
