Hi. I am a dev who is fairly new to the Android platform. I recently acquired a droid eris running 2.1 leak v3. I am interested in upgrading to root. I was wondering if anyone had achieved root in any of the leaks? If not, is anyone working on it? If so I may be able to help.
Thanks in advance and I apologize if any of these questions had already been answered. I have searched all over this forum and other forums and could not find a recent answer to these questions.
Also, I hear the OTA is right around the corner and might be the exact same as the third leak. Should I just wait until that comes out to attempt to achieve root? I do not want to spend hours of my time working on this only to have the OTA come out the next day and have done this for nothing.

There are versions of 2.1 rooted, but there is no current way to go from the leaks TO root. There are rooted roms based on 2.1 though.

Not to be mean, i hate when people put topic titles as something like 2.1 leaked to 2.1 root, that makes u get excited and then u go read and its not really that. Just saying name ur threads better

Welcome to the forums! But why wait to root? I was semi-bricked last night and had to use Odin to restore to stock, and it only took 15 minutes to re-root and do everything in my thread above. The phone will be much snappier and you won't have any bloatware.
Well I had the problem with the X about rooting then having to go back to 2.1 to update so I don't won't the same thing with my fascinate. Will it be the same process to root once we get 2.2 ?

The devs will release a rooted 2.2 update shortly after the OTA is released. It's not something to be concerned about. The X has a locked bootloader, that's why. I'm not sure if the process will change. It's risky because it is always possible that they can block rooting with the new update.
Of well that would suck. Hey the lagfix is for rooted only right?

Yeah. Just be sure it's the Voodoo lagfix.
Ok a little help here guys, My DX is currently running ApeX1.4.0 Froyo and earlier today the Gingerbread update got pushed to my phone, now with my knowledge about rooted phones tells me that rooted phones DONT get official updates OTA and Im kinda freaked out that it will ruin my root or brick my phone at this point its downloaded to my phone and keeps asking me to install it, help me out here people!
If you want to stay rooted than do not install the ota! There hasn't been any method found to root the official version yet

What? No.
Op, it will just try to install, and then fail. Then you're all set. Nothing bad will happen
Thanks Jmoney47,hanone I was getting worried for a second there
Even if you did get it, you can still get back to froyo, but you don't have to worry
I'm very sorry for what is probably the 1000th post about this but I have searched and searched and haven't found a conclusive answer. I have two questions.
Question #1: Does rooting possibly mess up the OTA update system?
Question #2: Is gingerbread out yet from Bell? I have even called them and they don't know what gingerbread is. (great)
Thanks guys.
1. I don't think so. I was rooted and got a Bell OTA update without issue.
2. Not yet. In the next month or two we should get something according to a leaked internal e-mail.

1: No, after rooting, you can still do OTA Updates. But after doing an OTA Update, you will have to root again.
2: Not officially released on Bell yet. No word on when the official release date will be.
Hi all! 1st of all, I am loving my 1st Android phone (MT4g). I was stuck on Blackberry for years, until I just simply got too bored with BB. Not bashing BB, still love'em, just wanted to experience Android, to see what the hype was all about & I must say, I feel I chose a decent " beginner " handset in the mt4g. But recently as you know, Gingerbread 2.3.4 was released for my phone and I opted to go into a Tmobile store to get the SD method of the update as opposed to waiting on ota or the other ones that are floating around ( which I'm not saying there is anything wrong with), I just preferred the SD method at the time. But now I was wondering if "rooting" the mt4g with the 2.3.4. update is getting close to available? I would like to root my phone now, because I want to overclock it just a little. But if I understand correctly, rooting is necessary to achieve that? So that is basically my question, Don't I need to be rooted to overclock my handset? & also Does anyone know when it will be possible to root the mt4g with the GB 2.3.4 update on it?
** I have been told that I could downgrade to a previous gb version in order to root my phone, but I want to keep 234 **

Long and short of it : 2.3.4 is not rootable as of now. Things may change but you must downgrade to 2.2.x if you are attempting to root. After you do that you up re-upgrade the phone with a flashable variant of 2.3.4 or 2.3.5.
Currently downgrading is the only way to root-once you do so and achieve root, there are a couple of roms in the dev section that are the exact same 2.3.4 my sense rom you get from t-mobile, only rooted and maybe debloated...and yes, you need to be rooted to overclock your phone
