Welcome to the forums! But why wait to root? I was semi-bricked last night and had to use Odin to restore to stock, and it only took 15 minutes to re-root and do everything in my thread above. The phone will be much snappier and you won't have any bloatware.
Well I had the problem with the X about rooting then having to go back to 2.1 to update so I don't won't the same thing with my fascinate. Will it be the same process to root once we get 2.2 ?

The devs will release a rooted 2.2 update shortly after the OTA is released. It's not something to be concerned about. The X has a locked bootloader, that's why. I'm not sure if the process will change. It's risky because it is always possible that they can block rooting with the new update.
Of well that would suck. Hey the lagfix is for rooted only right?

Amazing work from Sebastian Krahmer. His latest exploit also works on Froyo 2.2 on the EVO: http://c-skills.blogspot.com/
Looks like we now have what we have all been waiting for.
Update: I Followed the last link I shared on here for the guide and have successfully rooted my evo. So if you want your evo rooted go the the development forum and follow the guide. but here's the link again if you need it: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=765496
i was thinking this as well.. but thinking about it further.. unrevoked rorever requires a custom recovery to be installed first. to get that custom recovery you need to run unrevoked 3. unrevoked 3 still has the disclaimer: Unrevoked 3 does NOT work on Stock Froyo (Android 2.2) Phones
:-/
Yeah, little skeptical still.. Wish I wasn't at work, I'd try it out.
It looks like unrevoked found the exploit to get into the phone now and then you have the programs to run it. They will probably update something to show us how to do it all together.
But they found out how to get in that's all that matters.
So from what I'm understanding is the new way to root the droid 2 is the same exploit that works for the evo and will work.
Here's the thread for the droid 2: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=764950
So from what I understand is if you follow those instructions it should work.
@unrevoked
If you're desperate to root an EVO with Froyo, watch this space for a downgrade/unrevoked^3/unrevoked forever method: http://bit.ly/dg2Fu4
nice ill wait until this method is thoroughly tested on the evo, but glad to see 2.2 rooted!
DAMN! This will lower the value of my EVO when I go to sell it in about a week. Booooo!
Great, now I can send by mine back for replacement since my 4g keys are borked.

Follow the last link I posted under the update on the first post.
not to sound ignorant, but what does this new root entail ? caz i have evo (came with 2.1) did root it with unrevoked forever and have been using custom froyo roms. currently i am using fresh evo 3.1.0.2.
so back to my original question, what does this new root do? is it just for the new evos which comes preloaded with 2.2?
thanx
It works great! A little lengthy but well worth it!
All it is.. is to make root for people who had 2.2 froyo or had it installed when bought.. brings it back to 2.1 so you can root your evo.

Stock Evo Froyo 2.2
I just tried it and it does work just follow the instructions works perfectly dont worry about it does work
Since I didn't want to unrevoke and have full access I actually used the step tell it asked for me to unrevoke so my phone was on 2.1 and then I went for another rooting option for 2.1 and it all worked and I'm not on the CM6 nightly. It is wonderful and it's amazing how much more I can do now.
I'm dying to get FlyX or Tranquility on by DX. But since I just barely got my phone, I already have the 2.2 OTA. Does anyone know if the FlyX or Tranquiliy will work on the 2.2 OTA? I have the 2.2 system sbf that p3droid put out, so I should be able to flash back to 2.2 OTA, right?
I would like some confirmation that I won't totally brick my phone if I give it a try. This being my first android phone and all, I would hate to brick it days after I got it.
Short answer, yes. See this post for longer answer, then follow the wiki for each step.

Thanks. I'm already rooted, have Koush's bootstrap. I was just a bit nervous making the big jump. I'll reply back here to let everyone know how it went.
Yes please do, I'm in the same situation as you.
I just installed Droid X Bootstrapper and made a back up, I'm planning on deodexing it tomorrow and possibly install one of those roms.
Let me know how it goes for you!
I have fly x on top of official 2.2 928droids deodexerrr was a big help. No issues here. Good luck

FlyX over OTA 2.2 worked just fine. Unfortunately it's not much different than what I had before (bloatware removed). Hopefully birdman has an ace up his sleeve and we'll get true custom ROMs.
I doubt it though. (sad face)
PS I hate emoticons.
I'm tempted to root my phone, and install a ROM, BUT is it really worth it? Should I have more patience and wait for 2.2 ROMS? Im worried if I root it now, then 2.2 comes out Ill have to restore it back to stock. I also heard if you have a rooted phone and a major update (like froyo) comes out your pretty much bricked. Advice needed?

Wrong section.
Root it. You can always unroot your phone and go back to stock. Ive done it plenty of time. Read through the forums....there are plenty of instructions on how to

You can always flash back to stock if you don't like what you did to it. I end up flashing to stock, then flashing to a rom every other week or so to clean any messes with my phone. You'll learn how to do it right and how to fix. But start by reading the stickies, and asking the guys on irc if you have questions.
I'ld be more concerned that if you get the OTA before you root, that the update will close the exploit and make it impossible to root afterwards. If you root now, you may have to wait a day or two longer for Froyo. But if you plan to root after (or if you unroot for an OTA), you may have to wait a lot longer for a new root method.
Root and ROM. no question about it. We haven't even heard a release date or even a time frame for when the Fascinate will get it. I know everyone bashes me for this but the bottom line is no one has ever came out and said that the fascinate will get it on this date. Maybe the galaxy S is. But not the VERIZON FASCINATE

Froyo Update
My Intercept updated to Android Froyo 2.2 this morning!
Guys, there's a ton of talk that the Froyo update bricked half the phones that did it. Happened to my sister's phone this morning. It installs, then gives you the triangle with the exclamation mark. When you reboot, it freezes after the Samsung animation.
No problems here....wife's intercept.......good to go.....noticeably faster...home and back button work fine now. Good stuff

My sister updated hers this morning....nothing like a full upgrade OTA!!! looks great, went smoothly BTW, just so there's no confusion, updating formats your internal storage....back up all your data first!!! You'll lose messages, apps, games, contacts, settings, etc.
Update was pushed to me, I tried it it failed because I have inxane's custom recovery installing so I need to find a download of the rom or wait for ubuntdroid to come up with a 2.2 release

Here you go. Not sure if it's 2.1 or 2.2, either way I'm using it unbrick my sister's because the OTA has a 50/50 chance of working. Also the stock kernel is here:

Bricked my wife's phone this morning. Took it into the store and they replaced the phone. Updated the new phone without a problem. Phone is way better than it was before IMHO.
Got it this morning, installed cleanly. Spent all day trying to root it. Tried SuperOneClick, Z4, and Rage Against the Cage. Anyone successfully root the Sprint Intercept on 2.1? Thanks.

Z4 won't root for me on 2.2 either
I had tried Universal Androot as well. I haven't heard to many people talking about finding a root that work. YouTube hasn't been much help either.
see here for rooting 2.2

Thanks, I finally got SuperOneClick to work with Froyo.
I managed to unbrick my sister's Intercept and then upgrade it to 2.2. Super easy and no rooting required.
Samsung really has to get their act together. Did you guys see this?

Ironically people complain about Samsung being slow to update their phones but I wouldn't want them to release a version that bricks the phone instead.

They have done exactly that, though almost half the intercepts updated have bricked during the process lol
Is the 2.2 update only for Intercepts on Sprints service, or does it include those under VM as well?
Hello my name is Melvin. I have a HTC EVO 4G. I had previously done a temp. root with unrevoked. I had 2.1 OS, and i think i may have screwed up. I new the new 2.2 was available, so i unrooted (temp.)To get the new FOTA. Now im interested in a custom rom, (gingerbread-deck-evo). Im obviously new at all of this. So, tell me did i screw up?
Or can i still root with unrevoked since it was only a temp root for tether purposes?
Im a noob!

Well Melvin. Your screwed. Assuming you took the 2.3.3. OTA, since 2.2 dropped last year, there is no root for us. Welcome to the club...

Now then I just looked at my firmware version and it shows Android 2.2 when I took the update it said FOTA 2.2 . If that's the case. And its 2.2 . Then I need to learn how to get a custom Rom and flash it, since I'm a noon and all.

well if in case you do have 2.2 Froyo then you're still in luck with the rooting option.
in most of our cases we were either dumb and did the OTA update to 2.3.3 or like myself got an upgrade from my LG Optimus S to the Evo 4g and BAMMMM 2.3.3 out of the box which blows.
on the other hand I have heard rumors that Google recalled the 2.3.3 updates and no the Evo's that havent updated wont receive the update yet and are still rootable.. Could it be that the reason to that is all the Talk about Google unrestricting the bootloaders?
