Hi all I have been following this forum as I am considering getting a milestone 2.While searching the web earlier to day I visited GSM arenas page for the milestone 2.Upon reading the comments I see a post at the top by someone named "cloud" giving a link to how to update milestone 2 (droid 2) to gingerbread 2.3.3.Post is dated today and points to a page at latest firmwares website.
I have no milestone to check with so am wondering does anyone know of this?If so can they confirm/dismiss this
Download link leads to a file named Monster_D2_2.3.2_4.5.153.zip
Still none the wiser
Cant post links sorry

I'll second that. And I don't think it's very hard to discover that while Droid 2 and Milestone 2 look similar they simply aren't the same (I'm sorry but this is such a common assumption from people that it's starting to annoy me).
If you're looking for an Android device that will get updates or has a lot of custom ROMs, the GSM Motorola devices simply aren't made for you. Neither are custom ROMs if you're unable to figure out the differences between Droid 2 and Milestone 2. Flashing a Droid 2 ROM into the Milestone 2 simply might brick it.
However, if you do want a device with support for custom ROMs or the latest updates, it's quite simple: Google's Nexus, Samsung, HTC and LG.

Almost. Droid 2 is based on the TI OMAP 3620, Milesstone 2 on TI OMAP 3630 but it shouldn't make any difference I think.
Sorry for any confusion caused, but I went out of my way to state where I found the link (the gsm arena MILESTONE 2 page) and that I didnt have a device. Therefore did not tell anyone to flash this "Flashing a Droid 2 ROM into the Milestone 2 simply might brick it"I tried with the help of google to find out the difference between the droid 2 and the milestone previously with no definitive answer. So I presumed it was merely the cdma (us) take on the milestone 2 name the answers have helped me understand a bit more so thanks.I am looking to change phones very soon.I am wondering if the milestone 2 (as I have the opportunity to buy one fro a good price) will definitely see gingerbread in some form.Blurred or not. Also I have no interest in samsung galaxy 2 as is too big and expensive. Also all the new htc phones are not open to custom roms (desire s,incredible s) as some may think.Came to the conclusion that at 220 gbp brand new the milestone 2 may represent a sensible choice of phone. Many thanks and again sorry for the confusion
CDMA vs GSM is probably the most important difference between te devices.
It isn't clear whether Motorola will release a Gingerbread upgrade for the device, as nothing has been confirmed (via Motorola's official support channels). Some say the China version of the Milestone 2 might get an official Gingerbread release, but still as we all know Motorola right know, nothing can be certain.
Mikevhl is right know trying te get CyanogenMod 7 working on the Milestone 2, so probably we might see Gingerbread on this device.

I'm willing to pay $25 to $30 for someone to port over the MIUI ROM over to the Droid X. I'd pay more if I could buy maybe others will chip in?
I can pay half up front but only if you're a well known developer with some reputation behind you. Let me know!

I have seen quite a few of these posts on varioius droid forums.
I would be interested in checking this out if it is ever done.
D.
definitely would love some MIUI on the DX
I'll bite, what is MIUI, and if its a ROM then hell yes I would be happy to put cash down.
miui rom
unfortunately this rom requires a custom kernel to run meaning the droid x boot loader would need to be cracked

A unlocked bootloader allows a custom kernel, in which we can use to make and compile very custom roms. For example, true AOSP, MIUI, and Cyanogenmod need a custom kernel to run.

There are many ways to get around that issue. I looked at it and I think it can be done but I would need about another 48 hours in a day to even think about doing it

Maybe you should see if people are willing to donate toward getting you a DX to develop it on. I've seen that work in the past. I was under the impression MIUI wouldn't really work with a locked bootloader, though.
well the milestone has a locked bootloader much like us and they have MIUI support
by the way here is the english forum site for MIUI www.miui-dev.com I think we need to be heard over there!!

If you ignore the horrible music, this rom looks pretty flippin sweet! I would definitely give it a try
Agreed. I know that at our current state(likely forever) we will not be able to truly mod the kernel as far as I know. I've spent the last 6 months in the DInc and fascinate forums(reason for not being sure) but currently the milestone does have MIUI support and I'm sure, that with the right developer we could to. There would be some things in the MIUI rom we would lose due to this, but would still be worth it as it is a truly great rom with a solid skin on top of it. Its lightweight, and it will fly. I would gladly pay for this as well. I can compile kernels and what not, and prolly throw a ROM together but porting the MIUI to a phone with a locked bootloader that does not, by design allow unsigned zips, I cannot do. I know we can flash zips in clockwork but the way I understand it, ALL of the ROMS available for the DX, are based off the stock kernel for sure, and likely the framework(this is where my knowledge or lack there of for the DX hurts) and are still somehow tied into blur. I could be wrong. Don't quote me on any specifics about the X, I just came back to it because it offers superior to the dinc by far, and still somewhat better than the fascinate. Again the difficult part of this would be thatbthe MIUI rom is a COMPLETE rebuild of android. I loved it on my dinc. I would pay $100 to have it ported SUCCESSFULLY. As I just got married and don't have time to learn a new phone.

Also, I saw the comment that the milestone has the locked BL, much like us. Your close. Its exactly like us. I don't know about encryption keys but wouldn't be surprised if it was the exact same key. Just saying. I don't know enough about this phone and the bootloader. But it sucks we got stuck with this. I would like to see the dx's full overclock potential. Not just the way we are doing it now. I think we are using modules. And that's not the same as compiling a built from source overclock compatible kernel .

If you run the ADW launcher over MIUI, it is pretty awesome... I don't like the IOS look either, but the ROM itself is VERY slick.
Given the Optimus 2x runs the same chip, similar hardware, is it possible to compare the two boot loaders together, and possibly replace the one on the Atrix with then one from the Optimus which is hackable????
Theory seems Okay, after all it is the chip.....

Simple answer. No. The issue isn't just the bootloader its also the cross checks from other areas that check for the moto signatures and if it doesn't find them it fails.

So in-fact your saying there are signatures to secure the boot-loader as well, not just signatures to secure the kernel from being tampered???

Sure, find a way to flash it.
If it were that simple, then someone would just take existing code and write similar custom code to replace the bootloader.
But somewhere there is a cert stored in hardware to validate the signature on the bootloader. If the Bootloader fails the sig check then the phone doesn't start.

The hardware is not similar. The optimus have 512mb of ram, Atrix have 1gb
The best possibility is to compare The xoom bootloader with tha atrix. Same hardware, same manufacturer, same partitions....

Ahhhhh truuuuue, now I understand, for so long i thought everyone was looking at secure keys for being able to keep the same bootloader and install custom roms.
Initially i thought you could completely flash the the boot block( with signatures and all) straight to the hardware ( after all the manufacturer did it)
......and of-course it is not easy lol

Actually the Optimus haves 1gb of TRAM. So if you convert that you should wind up with 1.21 gigawatts.

so why doesnt anyone port the xoom loader if the things are so same? anyhow i can confirm that the lg optimus 2x and moto atrix share quite a lot (the ram is not of much importance sort of, mostly the webtop uses a lot of that ram), for one the broadcomm bcm4329 wifi/bluetooth dongle is the same in both, you can even exchange the drivers and they work.

Isn´t there the point? I just need warranty when the phone is broken. And when the phone is broken means i can´t do anything with it. I guess there is no way to flash the phone without the phone starting or trying to start.
The answer is really simple: if you don't want to take a risk, don't consider flashing a custom ROM. A lot can go wrong and if you're unwilling to educate youself it's not even an option to install something else besides stock Froyo.
Sent from my MotoA953
Yes I would spend quite a while educating yourself before installing any roms, I thought I knew a bit from my reading...... I learnt I knew nothing! I feel comfortable now, but my phone is still a bit messy.
As for an offical announcement I wouldn't expect it too soon, as they just stated that the Atrix GB update wouldn't be till Q4 for the UK. I would expect that phone to be the next to be updated (has the Droid 2 officially got GB yet?)
Does anyone know about this thread? http://rootzwiki.com/showthread.php?t=3406
The poster says this is an "official Gingerbread leak" and it looks real... but after reading half of the replies (that's 14 pages!) I still don't know if this is meant for A953 too - the pics and information only refer to A956 (Droid 2 Global / Verizon).
My question is: may I try this file in my Milestone 2 (A953) or will I brick my phone?
Thanks!

The D2G (Droid 2 Global) have both the CDMA and GSM radios, so I think it might work. The D2 (Droid 2) have only the CDMA radio, that's why we cannot get the radio to work with the other leaks, since our Milestone2's have GSM radio.

So you mean that this leak is some kind of "generic" release for the Droid 2/Milestone 2 devices?
Now that's good news... but what's the safest method to try it on my phone? How do I create a backup of my current official Froyo from Moto?
Back in my HTC Magic days I used to do it very easily, but I still haven't got free time to play around with this one.
Thanks!

Not true. The Droid 2 Global indeed has both GSM and CDMA, BUT GSM is an addon!
You offcourse can try to flash it, but believe me, radio will not work. If it'd be that easy, we'd have seen custom ROMs for the Milestone 2 waaaay earlier.

That is not right. It's a combination of hardware capability + android framework support (media server + libs + codec) + camera application. It's not that easy, believe me, I tried a lot with MIUI.

Guys, please don't put your hopes too high and take this rumor* with not only a grain but two hands full of salt.
HTC (like all big OEMs) officially supports its devices for 24 months after their market release. The M9 is getting three years old, soon. In other words, it's more than unlikely that HTC will provide any further updates for the M9. Especially since the EOL phase got reached almost a year ago and not just recently.
In addition, why should a carrier branded device get a major android update the unbranded European version or the dev edition doesn't get? Don't forget that these two versions normally got their updates around 3 months before the carrier branded ones. If the Optus variant really got android 8 at then end of February or the beginning of March then SKU 401 and 617 would already be running this newer version since somewhen between late December and mid-January.
Disclaimer: Don't get me wrong, I'd love to see the M9 getting another major update. However, chances are more than high that the whole thing is just a canard.
* Since this info is nothing more than that.
If a specific career device gets an update, would it be possible for all other variants to run it (ported version , may be?)?
Or, would it be possible to port it to other varriants?

It depends. Theoretically, it should be possible, but some carrier specific feature might not work for other carrier. That is, if the ROM is still compatible with the old firmware.

I don't know, I don't use this app and I'm not the rom developer.
Test, sorry please ignore this.

In general term yes.
Note that carrier specific would sometimes means ril+modem. So in such cases, the port could work but leaving phone and data capability out.
