I've recently been having problems with some of my text messages not making it to my phone. Some get through, some don't. I spent nearly 40 minutes the other day with "tech support" (30 of them spent talking to an Android 'specialist'). In the end, I was told that they didn't know why some were getting through and some weren't. They pointed the finger at my friends who are texting saying the problem might be on their end (my gf is on T-Mo as well and we skyped so she could show me the 'sent successful' msgs on her BB 9700). The real kicker was when the specialist told me that I should delete my texts every day because "Android devices can't really handle holding more than 40-50 msgs at a time before it causes problems for the handset and the software." SMH.
Anyway, I've been playing around with a friend's Evo lately and I really like it. It's got me thinking of a possible switch to Sprint if this text issue keeps popping up and T-Mo keeps giving me BS answers.
I guess I just want to ask:
1. Any recent converts from T-Mo? How do you like Sprint so far?
2. Any experience issues similar to the one I'm having?
3. Any issues at all with the Evo or service in the LA area?
My friend said he's been with Sprint for about 10 years now, and I asked how customer service was. He said "I don't know, I've never really needed to talk to them." Seemed like a good sign to me.
Thanks XDA Evo heads!
I was on tmo before I switched to Sprint when I started working for them. Honestly on not working at sprint anymore and I'm still on it and got my fiance on it and we have a joint account. Sprint is amazing and I love it and I would never look back. Plus you could probably get a discount from where you work which helps. Customer service isn't bad if you have to call them. I've called them and if they can't help tu they usually offer some kinda something to take away the blow.

i was in the same boat... i forced tmo to let me out of my contract b,c of similar problems, including weak signal strength and dropped calls....
I am having better signal strength and less dropped calls/ unreceived messages but not as good as I was expecting...
The biggest difference I noticed is that Tmobile customer support is miles beyond Sprints.
Sprint has the worst customer service that I have seen in a while.
The reps are dumb, disrespectful, dumb, don't care....dumb....
Not exactly what you asked for but I switched from AT&T to Sprint about 2 months ago for the Evo. I love the Evo..... but Sprint sucks ass. At least here in Central Florida, Sprint is the worst service you can have (AT&T is the best) I sometimes get calls and text 3 or 4 days late. I'm in the process of deciding if my Evo is good enough to stick it out or if switching back to AT&T is worth paying the higher prices.
Give it a try. You can cancel within 30 days for a full refund of both equipment and service costs. There is no risk whatsoever.

I sent my wife a few texts 2 weeks ago that never made it.
I on the other hand have had no problems worth sprint's service.

Best move I have made. Tmo did good bringing android but everyone else is blowing them away with phones and plans.

I recall an issue similar to this on the hero.
Yes its true on some of the older Android OS there was some issues with alot of txt msgs my hero practically shut down when i hit 2000 txt msgs it wouldnt load them or receive any txt msgs.
as I recall just randomly not receiving them tho etc was resolved with a hard reset of the device.

Weird, I switched from ATT and I had the problems u are describing, however the problems were w ATT, maybe it was the iPhone but service sucked, dropped calls, slow 3G speeds, customer service wqs bad, etc. I'm in central FL btw. As far as Tmo I got to admit they got pretty good customer service, can't really complain about sprints either. Service has been great as well, no dropped calls in 2+ months and great 3G/4G speeds. If pricing is a factor, Sprint has it covered. Check coverage in your area and see if you got good coverage, other than that o don't see why you couldn't switch and be happy w Sprint.

I agree here. However, what an above poster said. T-mo has better customer support. I was with T-mo for almost 10 years and recently switched over when the EVO came out because T-mo couldn't tell me when their next Android Device was coming out, and the only rumors were of the GPS phone which looked attrocious. The Nexus was available, but only for new plan holders and the price was rediculous, not to mention it was already getting long in the tooth. I love the EVO, and 6Mbps down on my 4G is great (when I get a strong 4G signal). I am not impressed with 3g as I never seem to get over 600kbps and I do not like the fact that I can't use Data and Phone at the same time on just 3g.
Otherwise, Sprint's plan is better despite the infamous "$10" fee, unless you primarily make phone calls to land lines. I got a bonus 450 min. on top of the 450 min. with the unlimited plan for land line calls and I rarely use 100 min. Otherwise they really are unlimited in the Data side.
I hope this helps in your decision. Good luck.
I've gone through most every cell provider in my state. T-Mobile, ATT, Cingular (basically same thing) Virgin, verizon, Cricket.
Cingular was by far the worst. Tons of missing.txts and dropped calls.
Then went to Tmobile. Loved Tmobile. Not a huge calling area at the time. But still great service.
Then to ATT for the iPhone. Loved iphone. Still didn't like att. Than I came to sprint foe the EVO. and so far its pretty good. Pricing is nice, even with the 10 extra for 4G.
...in 1943, I killed a drifter.
I went from T-Mo to Sprint about two months ago, it was a great move. Better prices, able to do things in the shop. T-Mo forced my hand because they would not let me back into a contract and would not work with me on phones. I was very disappointed with T-Mo and how they handled me, especially because I had been with them for seven years. I have the Evo now.
If you are coming to sprint make sure you look into getting the Everything Plus plans to save some money.
Instead of the regular Everything 450 for 69, you can get Everything with 500mins for 59.
as dissapointed as i'v been with sprint, they do have unlimited mobile to mobile....
Thats pretty epic i suppose
Why does anyone use T-Mo on the first place (outside of Europe, that is)? Their 3G coverage is an absolute joke. It makes AT&T's coverage look fantastic!
Been with Sprint for 11 years, in 3 different states, any issue, that I can count on one hand, have been resolved over the phone.
You have 30 days to try it risk free, what's not to like ?

Hmmm. I had an iPhone too (1st Gen and 3Gs) and never once dropped a call, my 3G speeds were always fast and customer service was always great to me (but I always went to the store I never called tech support and the people at my store are really friendly and polite).

Is anyone else experiencing problems with 3G staying connected today in the Philadelphia / South Jersey area?
4G is working and stays connected but my 3G data connection keeps dropping. The 3G icon will disappear from the bar when the connection drops. I have a good signal, or so it seems, and i'm in an area where I typically never have a problem. I am running the latest stock OTA firmware without root on 0003 hardware. I have tried rebooting and updating my profile / PRL.
Any suggestions or feedback would be appreciated...

new york as well, one thing that seems to fix some issues (not all of em) is going into the keypad, dial ##3282# press Edit Mode enter your msl then go into data profile, press the menu key and press reset, that seems to help a little...
if u need ur msl code download msl reader from the market (free app)
Thanks for the feedback... For now at least my connection is solid. Today was the first time I've ever experienced this issue.
Sprints network is suckin all over the place for the past month or 2. Youll going to be waiting a very long tome.to use anything that involves data usuage. Your lucky if you get to watch a full you tube vid without getting an error message. Sometimes when i send a pic message it just stays sending for hours. I called and complained...they gave me a $30 credit for bad servide. I also told them even though they issued me a credit and if the issue is not resolved in 2wks i will be cancelling my contract with them and i better not get a cancleation fee for doing it cause it is not my fault. Rep ....actually i think it was a supervisor that said it is a coverage issue im having and blamed it on out towers, wich is bs cause ive called.several times and complained. So either A. they take to long to fix.issues or B. It happens way to often and i cant use my phone for.the reasons i bought it for. I actually dropped the call cause of poor service while on the phone with another rep.
I gave sprint a chance...now its back to verizon. Prices are great on sprint but what good is it if i never have service.

Thats pretty much how im starting to feel at this point. I just keep thinking if im going to switch I need to go ahead and do it while they still have the unlimited data. Trying to see when the Thunderbolt is going to drop.. I see a lot of people saying Feb some time.
Im lucky that I live in KC where the sprint campus is. Our service is always running great. Except the building I work in sucks for signal. Walk outside and I go from no bars to full bars.
The data network has been complete **** in Idaho for a month! Its driving me nuts!

Anyone feel like reporting this issue to.engadget? Feels.like.maybe that is the only way we will get some real answers on wtf is going on.
I'm northwest of Philly, Gwynedd to be more precise. I just just got .26 Mbps down and .48 Mbps up. I think that is pretty sucky and I have to tether my iPad all day to that speed.
Im in philly (west) & Im ok. 4g is a lil slower than i originally experienced, 3g is just ok. Either way it has been a slight "slow down" since i first got my phone. I kinda have just been tolerating it....
I agree with philly. When I first got my evo I was amazed at the speed of everything. Especially 4g. When ur 4g speed tests start to match your t-mobile buddies 3g speed test there is a problem. It seems to have dropped quality over the last month here in Austin tx as well. Hopefully Feb 7th is good news. I just upgraded two of my lines with two year sa.

Been having horrable data speeds on 3g the past 3-4 months. And ive been calling and complaining everytime i have problems and making note of when i called sprint and what was done to the account. I have tried everything they asked including going to the store and getting a refurbed evo. But at the store when i got the refub i dled speedtest and got the same results...so i told them to keep it and give me my original phone back.
Point of this post is to DEFINATLY call and complain...dont let it go and look it over. Take notes on what they said and did to your account and spit it back at them the next time you call. They wanna charge me an etf for something that is not my fault since i want to cancel. I wont accept that...this is there problem...i shouldnt pay for full service if i aint getting it or be punished for cancelling when it is a problem on there end. Here is notes from todays convo with them as an example for others that should do the same. It may be the only way for them to fix there service or the only way they look at you and be like...hes to much of a pain in the ass to keep him so let him go. I will continue to call and complain until it is hopefully fixed or worst case they cancell my contract...todays notes.
Feb 15 spoke to 3 sprint reps and 1 supervisor in the cancellation dept..had my bill adusted to 101.09 dollars for poor service the past 3-4 months. So far total credits issued for poor data the past 4 months is $16 for invisable screen protecter..$20 for data booster at home...$30 for a credit issued for january for poor data speeds and $36 today for february's bill of poor data speeds. Total of $102.00
I've also noticed slower speeds for some time now, along with my home comcast internet. too many people online these days? (my internet used to be blaazzzing fast for 9 years!)
This has happened to me since November. I got my evo on launch day, and was getting great speeds, about 1500kbps down consistently. One day in November, my 3g crapped out. Since then, sprint has given me 6 phones, 3 refurbs and 3 brand new ones. All have the same problem. This leads me to believe its a network problem, I mean how could 7 phones have the same exact problem. But, my friend has an evo, and side by side his is normal, while I get less than 70kbps. And the evo's in the sprint store are fine as well, along with all the other phone models.
I have spent HOURS and HOURS on the phone trying to get this taken care of. I'm not trying to get anything from sprint, I just want my 3g to work. I love the evo, and I love sprint's coverage in my area.
They have given me 6 phones, and I haven't paid my bill in 3 months, since they keep giving me credits since they cant figure out the problem. I really could care less, I just want my 3g to work correctly.
So no, it really DOESN'T pay to complain. I have spent hours of my life complaining about this, and have gotten nowhere.
Same thing here. My 3G data speeds crapped out last November also. Sprint has no idea what the problem could be. I think everybody who is experiencing slower than normal data should raise serious hell with Sprint every single day. This is NOT a coincidence. I suspect something fishy is going on and I'm not going to pay these premium unlimited data fees for terrible 3G data speeds! I'm going to demand Sprint to credit my account 50% every month until they turn 3G back on like it used to be. If not I want out of my contract. Either way I can easily sell my two EVO's on Craigslist to cover the etf's.
I can't watch Sprint TV, YouTube, or stream any online video content. Web browsing is VERY slow. My data speeds have gone from 1.6mbps to .30kbps since last November and now I never get speed results faster than .76kbps on a good day. It seems like Sprint flipped a switch one day out of the blue and data speeds went to **** ever since.

What happened was more people got on the data network and Sprint hasn't invested in capacity like Verizon, T-Mobile and AT&T has to support more 3G data traffic.

As we all know, HTC and Sprint borked downloads for apps like Rhapsody, Mog, Thumbplay.
I recently ran across the subject and i found a fix. It is very simple.
1. Get your MSL, There are many ways, call Sprint, Download the app MSL Reader from the market, CDMA workshop
2. After you have your MSL go to your phone and type ##3282#
3. Click Edit Mode
4. Click Advanced
5. Scroll down to HTTP PD Proxy Port & HTTP PD Proxy Address
6. Change HTTP PD Proxy Port to 0 (zero)
7. Change HTTP PD Proxy Address to 0.0.0.0
8. Go enjoy Downloads and a .20-.60 mbps increase in 3G speeds!
-All credit to original finder of this fix, i am just passing it along and found the speed increase. Also when you flash a new rom it will back to old settings so remember to re-apply and it wont make you more vulnerable to anything.

The Proxy changes do indeed help. Be sure to give them a try. That being said. my 3G and 4G data speeds are roughly half of what they were four months ago (Baltimore market). The only thing that has not changed is my RSSI or signal strength which comes in at -62.00 dBm every day, all day. The Rx signal to noise ratio has been reading "Not ready" for the past couple of months. What happened to it? How do I calculate CINR without this part of the equation?
I've complained numerous times about my poor signal coverage and pour 3g and ay first they gave me a airvana airave unit which really doesn't work to well with the evo..... but at least they did something....
I have an Airwave on the way. Sprint has also credited a month's bill yet again. Let's hope Sprint/Clear can get their collective acts together soon.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
For slow 3G speed, an Airvana is not the answer for the simple fact that it hooks into your existing broadband connection.. you could just get a WiFi router.
That's what I told them. They said it was an "Airwave 2.0" and acts like a repeater of the 3G signal. Either way, it is of no cost to me. It does show a willingness of Sprint to work with me, even if the proposed solution is no solution.

It's obvious the more people who start using smartphones will start to slow down the service, but its the same with Comcast internet as much as I hate it. The companies all get u with the little filler words "up to". The speeds are not and never will be garunteed, at least not in the near future. Let's just hope these clowns actually give us TRUE 4g speeds in the next few years(70-100Mbps) as the technology grows.
Not 100% true. My company says up to as well, but its only allowed to be 5-10 percent off that speed, otherwise they send someone out.

I mean there is wiggle room. But when a company says 20Mbps and u only get 13, u r within that range u are talking about. I know Comcast, if u pay for 20mbps service, u can be getting 12 and they can do nothing about it on their end. It's because some units share a single.signal, same with cell towers, the more people using , the slower it'll be. And grandma and grandpa are starting to get smartphones, so it'll keep getting slower unless sprint stays on top of their game.

I've gone from amazing 3G reception to constant dropouts and I work downtown Chicago across from the Sears Tower...I have no idea what has happened but being connected to 3G is hit or miss.
They also sent me an airave, which did indeed help in my home. But that does nothing outside of my home. Also, if the 3g works with the airave, that should mean that there is no problem with the 3g radio, so its not a hardware problem, but a network problem.

I dont think this is the problem. As I stated earlier, two of my friends have evo's, and side by side, their two get normal speeds, while mine gets crap. Also, in the sprint store, I tested their display evo, just fine, and a few other random phones, all were fine.

I live in the north subs and my parents are downtown Lake n Deerborn, and my parents phones have been crap lately too. Maybe sprint is over emphasizing the 4G downtown(much faster there then where I'm at) and could be messing w 3G speeds. Probably not the exact case but I can see sprint concentrating highly on 4G where it is abundant and short changing 3G a little bit.

EDIT: Signal improvement went away... see followup post below.
Original posting:
---------
Meant to post about this two days ago, and got busy.
I've been one of those with near zero signal in my home neighborhood. I live in Scotts Valley, near Santa Cruz CA. Since I got my Epic last October, I have been extremely frustrated that I get 0/1 bars at home, the signal is too weak to be usable for phone calls (constant digital dropouts -- conversation is impossible), and of course pathetic data rates when I can actually get a connection, which ALSO is never reliable.
When I bought the phone, a tower within sight of my home on another ridge was scheduled to get a Sprint site before the end of the year (2010), according to their website map. Then, this upgrade disappeared. I called, and no one knew anything, of course.
I've been roaming on VZW, who have a 4/5 bar signal here, via Roam Control ever since I got the phone. Fine for calls and text, no data worth speaking about.
Woke up two days ago, and was at first mystified, then thrilled to see 5 solid bars on Sprint!!!! 3G data rates consistently 1100/750 down/up!!!
Apparently, they finally got around to upgrading their coverage in the area. 'bout time
4G? Don't even go there. Not yet, not expecting it... Ever.
Wow my 3g speeds are 200 down max and I have no 4g
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA Premium App
In a way, I have Sprint's poor coverage in my hood to thank for me needing to root and get acquainted with XDA. Otherwise no Roam Control. But it would rock to get a similar upgrade around here. Zoning and landscape just make it really unlikely. If I go just half a mile north or west it's totally different, with 4G and all. Hell, I can watch Netflix over 4G at my office, just not where I stay. I hope your story is repeated far and wide.
I've had the same experience as you. I've been with sprint for 11 years now and my signal is now amazing at the house. 2600 kbps dl, 550 ul. On average, of course. They upgraded the tower nsar my house last year.

I live in Missouri (right next to sprint hq), and my service is never steady, usually shabby. But with the new EG22plus modem I get 4 bars constant. U might want to look into updating/rollbacking ur prl and/modem?

Staying exclusively on roaming is the easiest way to break your contract; they'll show you the door, or so I've been told...

that's more true if you use a load of data. I use roam control for voice and text constantly because my apartment is a dead zone, and I use my wireless router for data, never got anything about it from sprint

That describes me. At home forced roaming so I can actually make and receive calls, data over wifi.
With the RC tasker plugin, phone automatically switches between forced roaming when in range of my home network, then back to "automatic" when out of range.
It's a workable solution, but not something I should have to do.

You guys having problems in your house complain enough they will send you a Airrave for free.
Would that not be a Pleasant surprise instead of unpleasant? My signal seems to have gotten better lately as well

Yep. The only reason I'm still with them is because of the free Airrave. Without it, signal in my home was unacceptable.

This may be a bit off topic, but I roam ALLLLL day when I'm at work, it gets me quite angry, and I continue to use data and phone while I "roam" , and saw a charge for roaming one time but called sprint and asked them how the **** I am roaming within my coverage area. They fed me some BS but took the charge away. I've never seen a charge for roaming since. Do you guys get charges?
So far as I know, with my family 2 phone everything plan, roaming is included.
Edit:
I just looked, it doesnt say roaming anywhere, but when looking at changing my services, the only roaming option given is Canada Roaming.
Edit 2:
Found it.

I called 1888-211-4227 requesting an airave in order to fix a coverage issue I've been having for the past 3 months.
It started out small but today it got on my nerve, the problem is that all 4 phones would show full 3g signal but when I tried to place a call and send text messages I got a network failure.
Today I was expecting a friend who drove 80miles to bring me a textbook my son needed for college and he told me he would call me when he was at the security gate of my neighborhood.
Security told him to leave because they couldn't reach ANY of my phones and after 2 hours he was able to reach me.
It pisses me off because when I called account services, I got to talk to 5 people who sounded like they knew what they were doing but it turns out they were idiots.
All of them transferred me to the same department over and over until their network failed and the call was dropped.
I got pissed and sent them an email demanding an airave and service for the damn premium data ad on I pay for with 100kbps 3g service.
sorry if I sound like a douche but damn it pisses me off that everyone says they improved customer service when its still the same idiots on the phone.
/end rant
The airrave doesnt always pull your calls when someone tries to reach you .. my ex called me like 5 times in a row and on the 6th it finally rang... better than 2hours but ya never know..

Yea, I will be completely honest, I got an airave, and it was WAY more trouble than it was worth. It kept HOGGING by bandwidth, and I have a 20mb connection, it would slow all computers down to 5kb/s. It would randomly go off and on, texts would come in late (i would get no texts for hours, then i would get 50 all at once). And it messes with the gps on the phones, so its impossible to use Google Maps to map out a route.
damn, I really don't know what sprints deal is, I live in a very populated area where AT&T and Tmo have 4g and 3g without issues, somehow sprints been sucking and they haven't bothered to fix it.
I have full bars of 3g on all of my phones and I can see some cell sites from the roof of my home...I think the 3g tower is close to a 1x tower and the evo keeps connecting to both or something so it cant make up its mind of which tower to use. I'm stumped.

I wouldn't say that sprint hasn't bothered to fix it. Trust me they are in the process of doing major tower upgrades, and improving their spectrum. We will see at least a 70% improvement of coverage.

all well and good, but my data speeds and network connections have been getting worse and worse and worse for several months.
unlike these other people, i won't wait any more. i've decided to pay my ETF and go back to TMo.
This entire 'we are fixing towers, sorry about that' thing has been going on consistently during my entire 1.5 year tenure. i'm done with it. when i'm standing in the middle of Manhattan and am getting 0.15mb/s down, i wonder why i am even paying my bill.

That's not a source. lol. Sprint employees say lots of things. doesn't mean they are telling the truth or have any idea what is truely going on. They just believe all the lies they read in their emails that they are required to read and believe. Sadly you're on that believes them. lmao. So what about wimax? so tell us, are they going to fix wimax too? lol. The second they signed the deal with LTE, THEY COMPLETELY stopped upgrading towers in my city. lol. AT&T's network is much faster than Sprint. Verizon's 4g is much better than Sprints. lol.
Sure Sprint will upgrade just a little, but only to shut us up long enough to sign a new contract. lol

omg. lmao. yeah, he's reading his company emails. LMAO!!!!! I can't say who I work for but I see the same emails. then I talk to the ACTUAL employees that work on the towers and they do less than 2 hours of work a week. They actually told me they know about towers that haven't worked right in a year and won't go out their and fix it. lol oh well.

Of course it isn't because the real information is available on our employee intranet. 4G, 3g, and cdma networks are all getting capacity and spectrum increases.
You're the one that doesn't know what your talking about. These aren't lies or emails that we AREN'T "required" to read.
As far as Wimax goes, Sprint doesn't exactly know what they are going to do with it. They are either going get rid of it completely and use LTE. OR use both Wimax and LTE.
Unless you have anything to back up your information then I suggest you shut the f**k or take your whining somewhere else.

In the spirit of the OP, I'd like to say I'm curious to hear if you get your AIRAVE eventually, and what it takes to actually convince them to send you one.
I live in a valley where the closest Sprint tower is shamefully far away, and services a staggering number of people. Calls rarely drop, quality is fine, and data speeds are okay, but I'm lucky if my cell signal ever surpasses -96dBm. I spend so much time rubbing up against -105dBm that my Evo idles to death in about 10 hours. I compared mine to a brand new stock Evo, and they both fail equally.
So, I tried calling Sprint for an AIRAVE, and while one rep confirmed that I am indeed in a low-coverage area, everyone I spoke to after insisted that nothing's wrong and I should take my phone to the store if I think otherwise. (I'd say with my cell signal, and an average EVDO Ec/Io around -18dB, they'd have to offer me a 100k salary before I'd call my area anything BUT low-coverage.)
On that note, the first rep I spoke to warned me that only the technical support department can comp you an AIRAVE, and technical support warned me that their computers need to indicate a problem before they're allowed to do that. Also, you might want to be ready for a fight if you expect them to waive the monthly fee - I got a few 'no's about that before even being told I couldn't have an AIRAVE.
Anyway, good luck, and let us know how it goes!

Thanks for the reply, right now it kinda blows since I had to buy skype credits in order to be able to work...
As the others said about sprint fixing their towers, we are going to be the last place... do you know why? Everywhere around the island everyone has either an iPhone from AT&T or a blackberry curve 8530 from local gsm carriers, and every time someone asks me about my cell provider, they say its crap because of their service. Sprint stores are always empty when I walk past them in the malls. People here don't see sprint as a national carrier, instead they see it as a local cdma provider.
Sprint took forever to actually begin testing WiMax here and it sucks hard, I hope they get it at full power soon when its officially announced. 3g has always sucked, there are like 5 CDMA carriers using the same towers...(Sprint,Virgin,Boost,Open Mobile,Centennial, etc) This is the cause for network overload, also I would love a data cap, maybe thats what people need in order to let others have at least 500kbps download speed.
I was about to switch to tmo...and the day I went to do so the merger wasd announced so I'm kinda stuck with sprint for now.
If you do decide to bail on Sprint, I saw a pretty hot tip in the Evo 3d section earlier that may help you.

Yeah I saw it, its regarding some increase or something, I'm going to go check out tmo and see how much 4 android phones will cost me a month, if I get a nice comparable deal I will drop sprint.
All I had to do was call customer service, say I can't make a phone call from inside my house and it's been like this since the service started. Three days later I had an air rave, no cost to me. I didn't have to threaten or even get angry. In fact, it was one of the best customer service experiences I've ever had.
Its a chance game, you got a good rep, I got 2 dudes and 2 girls who had no idea what I wanted or an airave was...
