Ok Fellas! just got my phone last night, rooted it installed the stock froyo JK4.
I come from htc desire so my recovery was bit different installed rom manager & got cloworkmod 2.5.1.2.
Downloaded a rom on phone, rebooted into recovery, but this recovery has purplish text instead of green & there is no install from SD. I cant think of any thing at the moment can some one please help, I wanna install some other rom, other than the stock froyo. PLEASE HELP.
You need to install clockwork revory if you go to the rom manager application there will be an option to flash clock recovery right at the top when you open the application hope this claers things up
yep i did sir, but still there is no option to install from sd, it only allows me to install as update.
from teh rom manager im selecting Galaxy S I9000 for clockwork recovery and it successfully downloads and when i press reboot into recovery its still takes me to the purple screen....i think this means that im not able to get into clockwork recovery any help.??
you have to select 'install update.zip' the first time, this will install clockworkmod and then you can proceed.
The problem is your using 3e recovery and cwm will not work with 3e.
To get 2e recovery you will have to use odin and flash a kernel that has 2e recovery, I suggest hardcores kernal as it comes with cwm already , from there you can install what ever custom rom you want using.the update.zip or installing zip from sd.

the best way to get clockwork working on i9000m (personally i believe)
is to flash the kernel for Speedmod... you should see it in development forum... just flash that kernel with odin
and your recovery will work fine

Hey man thanks alot, do you mind pasting a link here. If you kindly can please and thanks again.

There are a few things i could suggest.
1. Keep your flashing to a minimum if you have the i9000m. There is a high probability that your phone's memory card is defective and you'll ruin it by accessing it more often. Froyo broke lots of bell phones, and being a rom junky means more flash activity. I am on my second phone, but some people are up to their fifth. Flash a good stable rom and dont go too crazy flashing after that
2. download ODIN, and most 3rd party kernels have 2e i think (http://touristinparadise.blogspot.com/2010/11/samsung-galaxy-s-download-speedmod.html) - pretty sure speedmod does. voodoo also does, all kernels can be found in the dev section easily
Just make sure you download the ODIN version of the kernel and not the CWM file, because since you dont have CWM already, you'll not be able to use it.
There is a problem with USB mounting your sd cards on your pc without patching, since you are running a stock 2.2, so you would need the patch unless you go to a 2.2.1 rom
3. 2.2.1 runs nicer than 2.2, but i havent flashed to a JPY because i am paranoid about my second i9000m dying before i get a backup phone . You may want to flash a jpy mod (like doc rambone's, or darky's), but if you have battery life problems flash a different modem, like the JK4 modem used in bell's latest official rom

Oh crap! really, i think imma sell this phone rite away then, cus coming fro desire im a rom junky. I guess this aint the rite phone from me.
Yeah, there are massive known problems with internal memory on these phones. I'm already on my second, and if i have more issues, i'll be buying the international i9000 from ncix.com. same phone, no internal memory problems.
I have not been tempted to flash my Galaxy S, and I got stuck into a rut of flashing my phone every other week when I owned my Xperia (Win Mobo).
I thought my Galaxy S was fine untill I tried the new Nexus S in a store and realised how much mine lagged..
Now I am really curious as the the increase in speed from custom roms, as my phone still lags evey now and again (especially opening emails etc).
My stock Firmware is on 2.2 JP3, which is the latest available via Kies for O2 UK.
I have checked my phone and the 3 buttom Installer mode thing works.
So what do you guys recommend?
Should I flash my phone? Or are there not much differences?
I was looking at Supercurio's Voodoo 5.2, which looks good, what do you think of it?
Is it as simple as the instructions suggest?
Update.zip method (recommended; computer not required):
1.Copy the Voodoo package as /sdcard/update.zip at the root of your SD Card.
2.Reboot into recovery using the 3 button combo for your phone or “adb reboot recovery”
3.Apply update.zip
4.Enjoy !
Would I need to do anything else?
Does flashing a custom rom prevent me from returning to stock?
All advice is welcome
You can also update to 2.2.1 which is miles ahead of 2.2. Lag is almost non-existant. I used kies registry patcher to allow me to update to 2.2.1 jpy. I used the product code XEU.
As for flashing kernal/rom you can use odin or cw recovery. For cwr you need to have recovery 2e not 3e as i suspect you currently have. I flashed cf root via odin to get 2e recovery on 2.2.1 jpy.
Personally i have flashed mine with doc's rom from the kitchen with the speedmod kernal. I was using voodoo for months but find speedmod a little smoother. Either way both are good and to be honest 2.2.1 barely needs any lagfixes. It flies as is. I like the custom kernals because they drastically improve sound with the voodoo app. Both speedmod and the voodoo kernals support this.
Go to the samfirmware site. It has all you need (firmwares, pit files and flash tools like odin). And yes, you can always download the original firmware and flash with odin and get back to stock.
Hope this helps

Hey man, if i can i might just add some questions?
Does voodoo make full use of the 512meg of ram? is there message lag?
Im using a rooted android 2.2 with oclf (one click lag fix) would i have to uninstall this if i flashed my galaxy using rom manager? thanks for the help
Hey where would you download android 2.2.1? some of the sites look suss
Hey where would you download android 2.2.1? some of the sites look suss
Like samfirmwares ???
jje
sigh, ill have to register then? then again is there a way to root 2.2.1? my phone doesnt have the 3 button reboot recovery. So for 2.2 i installed z4root.apk from the internet on my phone to root it. would voodoo be better?
also as i asked before some websites say youll brick your phone if you dont uninstall anti lag programs before flashing, other websites dont mention it. What do you think?
Hey man, today while playing with my phone, i bricked it.... so i used odin3 v1.7 and flashed voodoo on my galaxy.
So far, voodoo has installed clockmod recovery and has headphone ampifiers. However i wouldnt say it was faster then android 2.2 with the oclf (one click lag fix). When i was using android + oclf my quadrant standrad score was around 1500 as is voodoo. I do notice less message lag though.
You might want to flash 2.2.1 from.samfirwares since you have odin. Then flash voodoo and apply lagfix. Always remove lagfix before flashing firmwares unless the new one had the same file system, eg voodoo and speedmod (both use ext4).

I don't know if it is your case (most likely) but in recovery 3e you can't flash unsigned update.zip
So, firt you'll need to either get 2e (with an old rom) or install something like speedmod-kernel. I've done the latter and it's pretty straight forward
then after, you'll be able to play around more (like installing ClockWorkMod for easier rom install)
if you have specific modem (like Bell's 850mhz), you'll also need to get the modem file (from samfirmware) and reflash it with Odin or you won't have any signals
Hey all.
I cannot post in the development section as I just recently made an account.
Sorry to ask a noob question if it is, but I had stock SG2 with carrier bloatware installed when I first brought my SG2 and last night I installed Lite'ning ROM 1.4, now Im not 100% sure but touchWiz and other Samsung apps etc are still installed, my question is - wats the proper noob friendly way to completely wipe my phone and then flash with Lite'ning rom ?? So its like a fresh install as if I just reformatted my PC. Or is this not needed ??

hey!
Lite'ning ROM 1.4 is not a complete replacement of your stock s/w. Its just a Stock Kernel with some tweaks. Lite'ning ROM 1.5 is more or less the same thing with a few more tweaks and LitePro removed the TouchWiz from it. You can install Lite'ning ROM 1.5 if you want to get rid of TW4.
Now, coming to wiping everything, I am not an expert on that... all I can say that its not as simple as reformatting the PC . But you can try Factory Reset (shutdown phone then hold vol-, home and power button together).
HTH,
Dull
Thanks for your info.
So if I reboot into recovery and do Factory reset, would I still be able to go into Download to instal Fresh lite'ning ROM 1.5 ?? I feel as if because I have not completely wiped my phone I dont get any real battery improvements, some people claim in VillianROM they have 2x better battery!!
For VillianROM how would you install that ?? odin doesn't work with that type of file.
Thank you
For VR, may be you can push CF-Root using Odin and flash VR 1.4 under recovery mode
Before flash just ensure you wipe cache partition (vol up + home + power) use vol buttons to navigate the menu and select with home button. Also download 'battery callibrator' from market place and run this when you have 100 battery. After each flash I do this so my battery data is new each time I install a new rom.
You have to use a different method to flash Villian rom, as you can't with Odin his instructions are pretty easy to follow. I personally found litening a better rom but Stock KF3 has been the most stable and better battery for me

ok thank you for your info mate will try your suggestions
I have this way and I get really bad stutters when I open close things on my phone, I think I may go back to lite'ning 1.4
Mine SGS2 with Lite'ning ROM 1.5 still has TouchWiz and LauncherPRO in addition.
I installed my 1.5 straight over my bloated phone. If i now cleared cache and done a factory wipe, can i leave it at that? or should i reflash over it again after doing that?
My galaxy 3 (apollo) came with 2.1, so I thought I would update to 2.2. I downloaded JPU from hotfile, the one that uses sampro.pl as password. Had odin set up with .ops, one package, nothing else checked. It flashes it and restarts a few times, then gets to the samsung logo which flashes, then it just freezes.
I have tried wiping the cache and factory reset. I tried JPS too (which I knew worked on my other phone - but that I upgraded from 2.2 to 2.2) but nothing seems to work.
Have I done something wrong?
I would suggest to flash your mobile once again
by following the instructions in the below link.
http://forum.xda-developewjrs.com/showthread.php?t=1372414
I hope it helps.
Somehow I got it working, I flashed Cyanogenmod and it worked, then wiped all including dalvik cache with cwm, still didn't work when I flashed froyo. So I removed sbl.bin and boot.bin from the .tar, tried and still nothing, then wiped data and cache one last time and on reboot it started up!
I had wiped the data and cache tens of times before and after flashing before, so it was either removing the bootloader or wiping the dalvik cache that made a difference. Only took all day to update my phone!
Try to get some different source for froyo....
I'm Glad you got it working again! next time you need stock firmware, use the one available in this forum by searching "stock jpu" the dev has removed the bootloaders and therefore it is much safer, and yeh as you've discovered, when it doubt, wipe the dalvik!
Hi
Yeah I did come across a thread where someone had removed the bootloaders, but all the files were either removed because they were on megaupload, or linked to JPI. I could have used that, infact I did connect it to kies at the start of the day and it said it could upgrade me to JPU. I wanted to do it by odin though! Then 12 hours later and trying countless other firmwares it worked. I just opened the .tar with 7zip and deleted boot.bin and sbl.bin, I had no idea if that would work or not!
It wasn't stuck in a boot loop so the bootloader couldn't have been corrupt? Perhaps it was the dalvik cache needed to be wiped from 2.1 to 2.2? I couldn't see anyway to wipe it with the stock samsung recovery.
Is CWM available for this phone? (without having to flash Cyanogen!)

CM7 is a aftermarket firmware, so it wont be available in the updates....and also, samsung wont give us this kind of good looking ROM anyways, flashing a ROM is a whole lot faster than updating through Kies or others...

Hi
I just meant is ClockworkMod available for the Galaxy 3. I noticed it was on my phone when I flashed Cyanogen Mod.
I have a Galaxy 5, the CM7 for that seems more complete, I noticed the camera doesn't work on the Galaxy 3 CM7. I thought they would both be about the same functionality.
In my case flashing a rom was slower as it gave me a bunch of problems, but yeah flashing is usually faster

Camera has been mostly fixed in CM7 and Galaxy 5 has been out for longer so devs have had more time. Anyway, all custom ROM's come with CWM Recovery.
I think you can install cwm for stock Roms..I have seen similar question in some thread posted here..which says your phone should be initially rooted to do this..
I am not sure abt the process..but as far as I know..you have to follow these steps :
download an app called as z4root..search in Google..its not available in market..
root your phone..it will ask two options to either root permanently or temporarily..go permanently..(you can unroot it I think so don't worry)
and finally you can try several custom kernals.. head over to development thread for that.I prefer fugumod kernal..take the tar file and flash it via Odin (safer side wipe dalvik as well as cache and reboot)
since its a stock rom ..you will not be having dedicated option to go for recovery, use volume keys, power button and the center button together..
bit of headache..
try at your own risk..or if I am wrong, please advice

Hey again!
As promised, here is the current result of this thread: As Dr. Ketan can be seen as a very "prominent" and competent developer here on the board, I strongly suggest to orientate yourself on his post (#9) when deciding to go back to GB from LPY ICS!
His suggestion:
EDIT (May, 17th): Generall suggestion by Dr.Ketan:
If you were on stock GB, N now you are on stock ICS with/without Cf root kernel. Dont do anything and wait for next ICS release.
This ICS bug can be result to brick by any sort of flashing procedure , if your luck is not with you. Nothing nothing is guranteed.
Old restore advice:
If one is on ics + cf root
1. Backup app with TB
2. Flash gb ROM using pc odin, root n restore app from TB.

If someone with experience has another suggestion: Just post it here in the thread, I will update the OP when there´s a better solution.
My original post:
Hello Notepeople!
I would love to know how to go back to my GB backup since there is a rising number of issues with LPY (and don´t get me wrong, but please: no discussion about LPY being dangerous or not - I´m sure that there are people who would like to no this too!)
There are some random answers within some threads, but as they all differ a lot, I will change the title and the OP in this thread as soon as we managed to discuss a straight answer, so everyone will be able to find the answer here!
Is it still the same procedure like it was during the Stunner/CM9 bricks-time?
1.) flashing abyss 4.2
2.) wipe (as it is safe with abyss)
3.) flash stock GB / restore backup
And: Is there any danger to damage the emmc while doing this? Some people wrote that while flashing abyss 4.2, there will be no wipe during the process...
As promised: as soon as there is an answer, you will find it here in the OP!

Edit :
After latest review from CF, And incidence found stock kernel can lead to brick, I suggest some modification in above.
Avoid step 2 and 3 ( recent work suggest stock kernel can also lead to brick)
And directly flash GB ROM (older preferable to get root access easily)
But If you were on stock GB, N now you are on stock ICS with/without Cf root kernel. Dont do anything and wait for next ICS release.
This ICS bug can be result to brick by any sort of flashing procedure , if your luck is not with you. Nothing nothing is guranteed.
I just flashed a cf gb kernel with heimdall and used cwm to restore gb. Then flashed ics lpy again without a wipe and all apps were fine and up and running. I think reflashing stock is only required if the boot loaders were changed with the older ics leaks. Lpy does not seem to flash new boot loaders.

In my opinion, you can skip steps 2 and 3 if you flash a wipe version of gingerbread from bodivas with PC Odin. The only advice I would like to give is stay away from CWM recovery on LPY rom.
i did it but its failing, im getting calender force close, gooogle framework force close, it said success but when it reboots it gets force closes and reboots again and again

What method did you use? if you flashed gingerbread rom it should be safe to do factory reset/wipe in recovery
i flashed the wipe gingerbread lc1 in pc odin it said sucess and it boots up but force closes a bunch doesnt let me do anything
have you tried factory reset/wipe in recovery?
Thank you based god!!!!

ok so yeah i can cosign it works, i flashed via mobile odin no wipe to get ics from stock gingerbread...to go back as Master_unit says follow the video and download a wipe version, and dont forget to wipe in recovery like i did and panic lol
NP mate, Glad to hear that you and your Note are ok now!
i just reverted back to GB from LPY.
i had KJ4 on my laptop at home so i flashed that with PC Odin.
Took 5 minutes, phone booted up.
i received a lot of FCs
booted into system recovery (vol up + menu + power)
factory data reset + cache delete
reboot
everything is now working. it was good to be in ICS but i hated the poor battery life. i am quite a heavy user but still got a day of battery with GB.. with LPY, 12-14 hours barely. will be flashing either stunner or cm9 now.
