Hello All,
New user here, but long time reader.
Sorry if this has been asked before about the new 10.1 Galaxy tab, but I don't see it in my searches. Just touchwiz in relation to phones.
So I recently took back my Xoom for a plethora of reasons, and am now anxiously awaiting June 8th when I will head to Seattle for the release of the Samsung Galaxy 10.1.
I was so excited about this tab, but after watching a bunch of Google I/O tablet reviews, understand that Sammy's touchwiz will be installed on the Prod versions of the tab to be released on June 8th. Though I can't positively "confirm" that, that seems to be the rumor.
This makes me sick to my stomache! Why ruin Honeycomb??? I looked at the touchwiz and to me it just doesn't make sense to put it overtop of Google's software.
Anyway, my question is, is it going to be possible to remove the Touchwiz? I assume I'll have to root (never done that before), but after rooting, is this going to be possible to just have Vanilla Honeycomb 3.1?
Thanks all!
T
From what I've been able to gather the 10.1 will ship with stock Android 3.1 then an optional update brings Touchwiz later on.
*EDIT* THIS LINK lists "TouchWiz with L!vePanel" as a "feature"" (although we might call it a hindrance) but has an asterisk that implies it will be added with an OTA later. The "Quick App Tray", "The Readers Hub", "Sybase", and "Cisco Webe" also share the same asterisk but its unclear if they will be added with the same OTA or if they can be added without TouchWiz.
*EDIT AGAIN* It might be a good idea to familiarize yourself with rooting and adb whether or not Touchwiz is preloaded. Once Ice Cream Sandwich is released its likely we'll only see it with Touchwiz. However, since it will be open sourced I'd bet we'll see an AOSP-based ROM like Cyanogen Mod ported over to the tab.
.
Do you have to accept OTA's to get updates "after" the touchwhiz junk? Meaning, are they serial installs? Or can 1 pick and choose? It would suck to be forced into "features"!

As posted on asia cnet.com web site.
The i9000 will eventually at some stage get Android 2.2 Froyo.
Read here for details.
yay that will make things even better
I don't mind waiting. 2.1 is still pretty cool, and I rather seem them test Froyo properly rather than rush out an update.
re's another outside source posting details. This time it's from GSMArena.
Read it here.
it woudl be awesome with froyo on it

If I understand this Manager right Samsung has already working phones with 2.2 and they will launch it soon after the phone will launch.
Actually he didn't say that. This interview was answered with the usual catalogue of noncommittal standard responses. He only said they are working on it.

at that event in UAE Samsung have stated that the Galaxy S will have the update in around two months
As Eldar Murtazin state,
It was in March that I shared my impressions of Galaxy S, those who do not remember, can read it here.
Quite frequently I am asked to tell about this device in detail, more over some say that there are some so-called reviews in the Internet. To my mind the problem is that for the time being there is no official software for the device. There will be a couple of different versions before it is officially released as well as the default set of programs can be changed. Those prototypes that people have today do not have final design, they are different from commercial devices (there is no curve in the lower body part in the final samples).
In Russia as in the majority of states it will be released in mid-July. Some countries will see the device one month earlier. But the update to Android 2.2 for this phone will be available only in mid-Summer. So is there a point in writing about it if something may change radically? I suggest that there are no problems in the device as such and it is possible to write about it. You can get general impression even today. In this dilemma I ask for your advice, what should I do best? It will be logical to add a part about the camera and description of some applications to the first article and call it the preliminary review. Should such material be published and announced on the main page – remains a question for me as well. Give your advice and recommendations, your opinion is important as always.
As a small bonus I want to mention that Galaxy S is important for the Android market in another way. It is known that most people consider Marketplace to be the only place where you can get applications and assume that Google will protect its right for it at all costs. In other words it will not tolerate other similar applications by other companies. It suddenly appears that Samsung can install such applications; particularly the device has Samsung application and book stores. What is more amazing is that while discussing this issue one of company’s top manager said that on the device you can use any search from any company. Google does not insist on the use of its search by default. The fact that everyone uses it today does not mean that there are any restrictions by Google. This remarkable discovery makes Android not only very open system but the system whose main advantage is the possibility to use any solutions available. This is namely what Samsung is doing. In this aspect both companies are following an understandable path, by not restricting users in choice of services. Admit that you did not know that Google is so flexible about Android? Or the reason is in antitrust legislation? I do not know but the fact remains, Google does not impose any one-sided terms on the hardware manufacturers.

This would be amazing on 2.2 as its faster than an n1 on 2.1 so when this gets 2.2 it will be the fastest android phon !

Totally agree, games from GAmeloft like (Sandstorm) is so freaken smooth like constant 60fps
The OS seems very snappy already and 2.2 is just gonna blow my mind away when its ready for our S!!!
as froyo is just officially released today as open source samsung could and would not try to port it until now ... so depending how smooth the transition goes samsung might actually get it done in 2 or 3 month

lol nice to see you here v1rtu4l. samsung will probably take their sweet time to get this update out, you and i both know how they work.. hopefully well be able to add Froyo to the Galaxy S ourselves as it was rooted today.
Am tempted to pick up this phone for the screen and AV format support. Watching videos should be great, if i can go by my experience with HD2 running Coreplayer. And no conversion required.
Also have a N1 running Froyo. Question is, once you root and update the i9000 to Froyo, what happens to its divx/mkv support? Do you lose it? Can its AV player be extracted as a .apk file and reinstalled? If so, can the same app be installed on the N1?

interesting point, is the codec support built into touchwiz or a feature on the media player?.... one of my big reasons for buying this phone is root and the codec support....
"No specific date as yet" is what kills it. Is it in a month or 2, or in the end of December ? I doubt its hard for Samsung to update to 2.2, although, it does take forever for HTC to port

at least you hear HTC and Moto talk about it....I havent heard much from Samsung lately....
I'm eagerly awaiting some guru Rom maker to deliver Froyo to the GS. The first one to do so will definitely be getting a donation from me.
The phone is rooted... how far are we to get froyo on this.. ...
Waiting from samsung is a pain.
(I realize some questions are about the Galaxy S/General Android but I thought I'd fit them in here too. If inappropriate, please move or delete this thread)
Has there been any word of a GSM version for the rest of the world like me?
I assume this is rootable and Samsung will not use locked bootloaders like Motorola Milestone (which I regret even owning) ?
Is it possible to port Cyanogenmod to this or Galaxy S?
Should I pick this or an HTC phone with a QWERTY keyboard instead for ROM compatibility? (The rumored HTC Vision)
In an experienced person's opinion, Should I go for this or keep saving my money and go for an Android 3.0 phone instead? (rumored to come out in Q4 2010)
First question I don't know the answer to.
Second question yes it will most likely have root upon release.
Third question is most likely not. With Samsungs complicated file structure and lack of open source code the phone will most likely only receive custom roms based off of only Samsung firmware. That means the only way you will get froyo is when Samsung releases it.
Last question yes I would wait for an HTC device. The community already has a good grip on these devices which should give you a much better chance of having a large choice of custom roms. (mind you I'm not saying the phone won't have custom roms its just they will all be based off of Samsung releases. If you don't believe me take a look at all Samsung android released so far and where the I 9000 is currently at right now)

Are there any stable ROMs floating around for the Galaxy S that are just vanilla Android 2.1 or 2.2 and work with all the hardware features of the phone? I hate all the crap UI junk Samsung (and every other manufacturer) throws on top of Android installations.
There seem to be lots of threads with various different ROMs in the development section, none of which seem to be vanilla.

I'm actively keeping a lookout for the same thing.
So far no AOSP Froyo build exists that I can find.
I think a kitchen build from modaco is the next best thing (but currently can only build from 2.1)
also hope someone comes up with a solution for this.
any one can check out this?

Is there's a Vanilla Galaxy S update?!!
Ok so the only way you can run stock Eclair 2.1 or Froyo 2.2 is to use a Google Nexus One, which is already somewhat long in the tooth compared to new hardware?
Is that the approach for the foreseeable future with regards to Android devices? They are all just going to be loaded with worthless shovelware and UIs that bog down the performance? If that's the case I'll just stick with my old phone and wait for Google and the manufacturers to get their heads out of their collective asses.
Let's all hope that gingerbread will stop this BS ...
I'm eager to get my hands on a clean eclair/froyo release without the TW, though i have to say that it wouldn't be so bad without all the lags. I just wish we all could download the freebies that samsung provide seperately.
According to the publications so far, Android 3.0 (AKA Gingerbread) might just be the cure for all this nonsense... hopefully google will do the job with the UI improvements and stop all the manufacturers of waisting their and OUR time and nerves ..

Yeah, I am definitely all for manufacturers allowing the separate downloads. AFAIK, it sounds like LG is going to do this better than any other manufacturer in the short-term and it's a trend I hope they keep up. They will launch their own app store, which I heard criticized but it does exactly what the majority of users want, free apps without bloatware. Sure, we would prefer to have those apps in the marketplace, rather than one more closed market created segregation, but these aren't software companies and if this helps them make more $ due to them being able to differentiate their product with software and by having less bloat then it's win-win to anyone who takes them up on both.
We will still see manufacturers, at least some, trying to dress up Android in the hopes they can create an HTC-Sense like following even through Gingerbread in the hopes of recreating HTC-like mindshare and growth.
Hi Guys,
http://www.samsunghub.com/2010/10/1...king-android-tablet-smt-i9100-for-kddi-japan/
above link FYI. Samsung has released a new tablet for a specific carrier KDDI in japan.
what caught my eye was that samsung opted for Ocean Observation UI instead of TouchWiz UI.
Does any one knw more about this UI? it would be nice if devs can port it to our galaxy S.
its a bit too early, but this thread can be used for port development and discuss further about this new UI.
They just use round icons in stead of squared ones, and there might be no calling option available since it is a tablet. Doesn't seem to much of a difference compared to TouchWiz.
wrong section moved
now back on topic.... "ewwww"
that was the first impression i got as soon as i shaw the pictures
A little bit of a weird UI 0_0.
Well before we get ahead of ourselves, the first step is probably to get either a system dump of the device, or a firmware (from which system can be extracted anyway). Then we can try and run/modify the launcher apk.
But... probably won't happen for a while, unless the UI has some interesting features.
sorry for posting it in development section...
LOL guys..it doesnt look so "eeewwww"
what was interesting is that why samsung would leave their first child TouchWiz!!!!
the source webpage looks sooo crap..i couldnt find more information about this..thought i should bring to XDA DEVS notice.
OK, still waiting on ICS for my Galaxy Tab 7.7 (P6800).
Neither trying OTA from the menu on the Tab (always 'No Updates Found') nor using Kies ('Your device does not support software upgrading via Kies') results in an upgrade.
These are the reported firmware levels (from Kies and the internal system info menu)
PDA:LA2 / PHONE:LA1 / CSC:LA2 (XSG)
P6800ZSLA2/P6800ZZHLA2/P6800XXLA1/P6800ZSLA2 (XSG)
It was bought in the UK but it's an import and I think that the above levels mean it's a Hong Kong model - for which an ICS upgrade has been available for some time. Yet still no dice.
Anyone know what gives? Is it maybe because I'm currently running a UK data SIM in the device which might be confusing region ID?
It's getting close to the point where I might try ODIN and a ROM sourced off the net but I'd much prefer to get it done the 'official' way and I'm a bit worried that something might be preventing an upgrade.
why wait for the ;Official' that may not come to you via OTA..?
Go for the flash of XXLQ2//.. via PC Odin... it's fast and easy and looks official...because it IS official only if your in Austria... But is golden for the rest of s.. I use it in the USA,, and it;s super sweet..

good luck
youre worried about 'preventing an official up-date'...
that's what's happenning now to your area!!!
The next up-date over ICS will be Jelly Bean...
and when that comes....
here comes PC Odin agian to flash Official Jelly Bean...
read this too..

Why wait.. enjoy your Ice cream NOW!
i have a TGY Hong Kong tab, bought it in Algeria and when I plugged it to my computer running kies, an update was available, even here in Algeria with my Algerian sim card,
i don't think its related to the country where you are, but to the original csc inside the tab.
as far as I know, the wifi bug come from a different csc ICS rom than the stock HC that was inside the tab (exemple : stock TGY honeycomb 3.2 to Austria ICS 4.0.4 causes wifi bug, people who updated straight from original hc to ics with Kies didn't have the wifi bug) , better wait for Kies updates (i think)
best regards

Yeah, that's why I've waited for the official update but my patience is being severely tested.
I can see why the iPad is so attractive - a lot less mucking around with tweaking things and updates are pretty straightforward. No wondering if your particular device is going to receive an update from whoever made it or the carrier.

Samsung has almost always been known for their tardiness in updates. Quite frustrating indeed for many. But IMHO that doesn't come close to making me lean towards iOS. Often there are methods to update or modify Samsung devices in spite of the lack of "official" updates.
Yes, Apple makes fine devices for users who could care less about taking an active role in making their devices their own. To them I say "Go for it." We who find it enjoyable to tweak our devices, iOS isn't an option. I owned an iPad for a month until I found it less than useful. My android devices did the same tasks often better.
To each their own I suppose!

I like tweaking technology for fun - but I don't want to have to tweak and manage just to get something usable.
With Honeycomb, the tablet falls way short of expectations. It's not unusable but it the HC-associated lag certainly isn't something I like to live with. The least I would expect is a prompt update to ICS to deliver upon the promises of the hardware and the fact that my device hasn't received an upgrade almost a full year after the OS was released is a joke.

I am in complete agreement with you. The 7.7 was just OK with HC. It worked but that was about it. Which is why I went ahead and flashed the Austrian ICS ROM. Never looked back!
But why does it have to take so long to roll out. Many countries already have it quite a while. I live in The Netherlands and I am anxiously waiting. Hurry, please hurry!
