I'm not totally new to rooting as I have already rooted my HTC Desire.
Yesterday my daughter came to me and asked me if I could root her HTC Legend.
I'm finding this quite confusing this time around and I am unsure what guides I should be following.
The wanted end result would be a rooted HTC Legend with S-Off after that installing a custom ROM should be the same as it is on the desire so I'm fine.
her phone has HBOOT 1.0 and android 2.2 currently
Can someone please point me in the right direction for my wanted end result.
Thanks in advance
Root is possible but s off isn't with hboot 1.01 or 1 being unable to revert it to s off XD
However you can use fake flash and still be able to do the same things
Look in the legend android development thread in the sticky with references there is a guide for rooting with hboot 1.01
Mines rooted with hboot message me if you need help XD
Sent from my HTC Legend
so I use the 1.01 guide to root 1.0 ok got that.
s-off was not a really big deal I just thought it would be handy

Background
I bought my HTC Magic in Singapore (through SingTel) about 6 months ago. About a month ago I used the HTC software ROM update to update my HTC Android 1.5 to HTC Sense UI 1.5 (NB: the android firmware version remained the same but I am now using HTCs Sense UI).
I finally decided to root yesterday and since then the problems have begun!
Just so things were "clean" I restored my phone to factory settings. However, I cannot figure out how to go back to the stock 1.5 (ie. the one that DOES NOT use Sense UI). So, now I am on a basic (without any modifications) version of Sense UI.
One-Click Method
I then tried this to root my phone with the 1-click method
When I click on “Backup recovery image” I got the “Failed” message. So, I clicked on the hidden asterix and tried to flash the image but I got the same message again. Essentially, this did not work for me. I posted on the comment thread (just yesterday) but have not gotten a response on it yet.
Method on XDA Forum
Then I looked around and found this more "complicated" method and found an HTC Sapphire Hacking wiki post which seemed easy enough to follow.
I generally use linux but just to be sure I followed the guide to the letter I booted up XP.
Everything worked fine until I got to this command: C:\AndroidSDK> fastboot boot recovery-rom.img
I got the following error message: fastboot failed, remote: not allow
Solutions?
I have looked all over this forum and a few others and have found this can be because of the "perfected SPL", however, as far as I know my SPL is 1.76.0007 and NOT the 1.33 "problem" SPLs.
I have NO idea what I should do now. I really want to root my phone but I am completely stuck as the simple method does not work, nor does the "complex" method
Any help on this matter would be very much appreciated
HTC Magic 32A
The same issues with me, i am currently stuck with the Sense UI with no way to root my magic and i have tried everything possible.
If you find a solution please do let me know
Is yours singtel? I think the updated Sense UI rom may have blocked it. I can't find a way of getting back to the stock rom.
I am not sure if it is singtel, but when I first got it before installing the sense rom, the boot screen says AirTel. I am not sure if this is the same but that's what I see.
There is nothing wrong with the Sense UI rom but I just need to have root.
Anyway I will keep looking for solution because I am sure that one of these developers will eventually find a way to root but till then I might just get the nexus one. From what am hearing and reading the phone is pretty simple to unlock and root.
Don't really want to buy a new phone just to root!
Airtel may be from India
Yeh, I think it is from there because I few forums I have visited mentioned India.
Well am not only getting the nexus one for the root capabilities, is just that the performance of the phone is amazing and I am a loyal fan/customer to HTC and Android and I cant wait to have one of that bad boy for myself.
perfected spl me thinks
Do you think? But, I thought it was only certain 1.33 builds?
Can no-one help with rooting my phone?
I have the weekend and I'd be willing to try something complicated.
Actually Singtel has given 12gb free data per month which means that wifi tethering is a really reasonable option and I want to set this up. Hence, I would really like the ability to root my phone.
There's (as for now) no way to root that SPL.
yeah same here,im also from singapore and having problems rooting.
could one of you technology gurus help us out?
seems like a waste if we cant root this phone =(
Wouldn't say it's a waste haha. But, I would like to use 1.6 (and then later 2.1) and also perhaps use tethering and other cool features!

This is how i got mine working from perfected spl->custom rom
If you want a different rom, dont follow the last 2 links, and find whatever you want to flash, after the first 2 links you will have a non-perfected spl and be able to flash whatever your heart desires.
There are easier ways to do this if you are not running windows 7. Apparently theres a way using htc sync, but i cant get it working, even with all of the fixes that people have claimed work for them
PurpleFries said:
u can have a sense ui running on 1.5, if you are only concerned with how it looks. Just flash the cursorsence rom, if u have 32a phone. ensure u dont have a perfect spl. If you did the rogers dream->magic switch, likely you have a 32a phone with 1.33.0010 perfect spl. you must get rid of this first.
here's some links to help you out as i did this process yesterday. took me a helluva long time.

Just follow the guide in the second link after making a goldcard using the video in the first link.

Will that goldcard method work? I mean I know there are never any guarantees but I'd like a general idea if you can manage it of whether it'll work or not. Don't really want to waste hours on it as it seems REALLY complicated!

Hi,
I've taken the plunge and finally moved from Windows Mobile to Andriod - picked up a HTC Magic (UK - Vodafone) its already sim unlocked... Having a play with it before i decide whether the HTC Supersonic is worth splashing out on when it comes out..
I know that you cant get the sense upgrade for the UK Vodafone HTC Magic - but i've seen some buzz words like rooting / flashing on here which suggests its still possible.
There are so many threads on here - its difficult to just find what i need - so if anyone could help i'd really appreciate
- Need a simple, idiot proof guide on how to get my HTC Magic with a sense rom on it (I have a 16gb memory card if it requires)
I just want a nice stable ROM which everythings works on - and a foolproof guide on how to install. So both pointing towards the guide, and pointed towards what the best ROM is.
Thanks for the help fellas
Since i don't have a clue what kind of magic the (UK - Vodafone) is i wont be able to guide you unless i start to search for info myself. So please provide me/us with more info about your phone and you probably have better luck getting help. What there will be useful to know is which Hardware revision and SPL you have. To figure that out you should check out the wiki there you should find more than enough info to get started. I will look back in this thread again tomorrow to see if you got further but still need some guidance.
Good luck with this, its not to hard as long as you care to read and read carefully before jumping into doing something there could brick your mobile. Bricks is often made when people does something without fully understanding what they are doing and what it does to the phone. But first of all figure out if you got a 32A or 32B board and what is the SPL. When you know this its easier to figure out what method you need to use to flash a cooked rom into the phone and what rom that will be suitable for the phone you got.
My guess is that since you write that the mobile wont get any sense update it will be a 32B board you got, but again this should not be a guessing game cause it can brick your mobile
You'll have to do some research on your own first. Get some ideas on what SPL's are, how to root, etc. etc. I did a month of research before I did root my phone and flashed different ROMs.
You need to provide your information about your phone like what SPL (although I would guess 1.33.0004 since I do have vodafone Magic as well), running on cupcake or donut, etc. That being said, I have a couple of sites that might be able to help you. Read/watch these thoroughly and understand them before you do root your phone.
http://theunlockr.com/category/howto/android_how_tos/htc-mytouch-3g-magic/ (a lot of video guides that you might find useful)
http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php/Full_Update_Guide_-_MT3G/Magic_Firmware_to_CyanogenMod *****I rooted my phone by using cyanogenmod's method for "Non T-mobile 32B Magics". In the last step, you can flash a different ROM instead of cyanogen's if you really want sense, but I highly recommened cyanogenmod as your first choice of ROM since it is so awesome.

Has other newbie links.
Don't be in a hurry rooting your phone as you might do something wrong (although it's hard to with all the wonderful guides out there) and deeply regret it. Do your research before you root it. And also try out different ROMs out there for Sense. People have different opinions on each ROM.
Thanks both of you
Love this site - ever need a hand.. Always people around more than willing to throw you some advise.
I haven't gotten the phone yet - arrives tomorrow. So was pre researching for when i get it..
Thanks for all the tips, i'm definitely going to research this as much as possible before attempting it.. As you say, don't want to end up breaking the phone.
I will post back here tomorrow with the motherboard / firmware details it has etc. Then see what direction you guys can point me towards .
Thanks again

Where do i go from here . - "Non T-mobile 32B Magics" guide? and instead of cyanogenmod ROM use one i want?
Also any of u know what the most stable - fast Sense UI ROM is for the HTC Magic 32B is? - just want one like that with everything working.
From reading - looks like this is the best HTC Sense UI ROM to use:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=644275
Question i got - what is Death SPL - and do i need it.. And where in the guide im using, should i do this ext 4 stuff and how
Thanks
Righty -
I decided to just follow the "Non T-mobile 32B Magics" guide you suggested - and do the Sense UI ROM later..
All done . Everything went smoothly.
Now i do wanna try and Sense UI ROM - but do i need the Death SPL? - as searching.. It seems some say thats more for the G1. Not entirely sure..
Also it requires latest radio? u guys got a guide and where i should get the latest radio.. Or is my radio fine..
Ah is ok i managed to flash it
Decided to go back to cyanogenmod stable ROM - the Sense UI ROM is almost there, but not quite yet.
Your radio is fine as it is, it won't hurt to flash the newest radio though.
Haykuro/Danger/Death SPL are the same, 1.33.2005, and again do your research before you ask questions because just asking questions and getting specific answers won't get you much.
Same thing with partitioning your SD card. I recommend checking out theunlockr.com or watch videos from youtube (lots of guides there, I recommened ItsAndroidsWorld

When you've rooted your phone the Recover Image will provide you with the options you need to partition your card.
I've personally used this ROM and it is the fastest Sense port I've tried though not something I use every day as it's not as fast as the 1.6 (Donut) based ROMs.
My personal favourite is SuperFast made by HTCClay. He also has a FastTest ROM which has links on this site but you can grab the SuperFast ROM from here the Android Spin forums. I'd post a link but it won't let me yet.
It's fast and stable and I love it.
If you want the DroidEris ROM then your phone should be able to handle it without resorting to a Death/Danger/Whatever SPL. I have the UK Vodafone Magic and I've not had to flash any new radios or SPLs to use those ROMs.
Be careful though. Once you flash one ROM you can't stop!!!
I'm a SERIAL FLASHER!!! AAAAHHH!!!

Hey There,
I have been researching this topic for quite a while and i'm a bit frustrated at this point. I have come across a pile of threads on this website about information to root/put new roms on the HTC magic.
Here's the handset details before I go into anything else
Sapphire Unknown 32B SHIP S-ON G
HBOOT 1.33.007 (SAPP100000)
CPLD-10
I'm in version 1.6 and i understand that you must downgrade to 1.5 before rooting. I followed a simple tut to downgrade it that entailed putting the sappimg onto the SD card and doing an update.
Whilst Doing this it gives me an error saying it can't find anything but when i look closely it is looking for files called "sappdiag" not sappimg
Please provided what I should do it'd be greatly appreciated
I'm very confused as this is meant to work to downgrade to cupcake...
Cheers

Hi mate,
http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php?title=Full_Update_Guide_-_HTC_Magic_(32B)
Read this through to the letter, and you should be just fine
There is nothing on that page
If this is a stock Vodafone UK Magic with Google branding then you shouldn't have to downgrade, nor mess about with SPLs, goldcards or anything.
The link supplied in the previous post doesn't include the final ')' character, I can't post the correct link because the forum rules prevent me from posting external links. If you have any further trouble go to the Cyanogen wiki and have a good dig around.
Just get universal androot out the market and root, rom manager to flash a recovery and your done

Please help.
Can one root HTC Wildfire that has froyo on it?
I bought mine with 2.1 but when the update for 2.2 was out, i updated it.
I tried doin the unrevoked root but obviously it didn't work.
HOW DO I ROOT 2.2 (FROYO) ????
Sorry I am not really good at all this, so please do help, really would appreciate it.
Rather than making a thread, if you had just read around this forum a bit (Properly, I dont know how you looked and didnt find the answer), you would have come to know that 2.2.1 OTA is NOT rootable by any software method.
The only way to root is to get it S-OFF using an XTC Clip, Downgrading and then rooting (Else directly installing Clockworkmod on S-OFF'ed bootloader)
Sorry to disappoint you, but, you should have waited a bit instead of acting trigger happy when you received the OTA, if you had any intentions of rooting.
Hello everybody, this is my first post on this forum although I am following it for a long time (WinMO and also happy owner of an HTC Desire).
I recently bought a second phone, a Wildfire (new with the stock 2.1 ROM on it) and have few questions about it that I could not figure out in the last few days by reading the forum.
Ok so everybody knows that the stock 2.1 ROM is kind of bad, but
1)how is the 2.2.1 official release?
If I upgrade it then hboot will upgrade as well to ver.1.01 and bye bye S-Off.
2)Is it possible to first root it plus S-Off and then put the 2.2.1 official release on it?
3) will this change the hboot and block it again?
I ask all of this because I like the sense interface in htc phones. I know Jokerdroid ROM exists and uses sense and is really good.
4) In this case is it worth even trying official 2.2.1?
5) What other ROMs using Sense are there available?
Thank you everybody for help!
And sorry but I could not find the answers anywhere, but hope this thread will help others as well.
1) No difference, except updated HBoot with increased security, WiFi hotspot and Froyo Apps2SD
2) Probably, but I dunno why would you want to do that. Safe Flash ZIPs are much better, since they are the same as the official 2.2.1 release, with just the updated bootloader removed.
3) If you root and put official 2.2.1, it will be blocked. But, if you get S-OFF (Using an XTC Clip, presumably), it wont be blocked, since that S-OFF is permenant.
4) Absolutely not. There are more complaints than benefits, on this forum itself.
5) Too many to list. See here:

1). Even if u won't upgrade to 2.2.1 , there is no free S-OFF solution for wildfire yet (even for the 2.1 wildfire). Alpharev for wildfire is yet to be released. Almost all the wildfires u see S-OFF are done with paid xtc clip. And there is no software root solution yet for hboot 1.01 with S-ON.
2). Again how is S-OFF possible. If u mean it by xtc clip, u don't need to worry at all. Once done with xtc clip, u can do anything u want.
3). Again when done S-OFF with xtc clip, no blocking at all.
4). My suggestion was don't ever try upgrading to official froyo. And if u want to S-OFF by xtc clip, u can try. But personally i won't recommend u to upgrade to official froyo, and certainly i wont recommend u to go with xtc clip in a situation like this. Having a new 2.1 wildfire at the moment is really lucky. Just root with unrevoked and enjoy custom roms. Everyone of us will soon have S-OFF by alpharev.
And u know what, regarding free S-OFF solutions , the ones with hboot 1.01 have only alpharev x option (its also the root solution for these) but the ones with hboot 0.80 have both alpharev 2 and alpharev x option. Suppose, if alpharev x is released earlier (may not be), those with hboot 0.80 can upgrade to 1.01 and use it.
So practically in my case there is no need to change it to S-Off. I thought Unrevoked does this anyway.
So then why is it necessary to have S-off?
if you can root on hboot 0.80 without having S-off?
Sorry I am really confused now.

Actually the point that S-OFF is highlighted for wildfire these days is just to have custom roms on hboot 1.01 (because it is hightly protected and not yet rootable)
The unrevoked for previous hboot 0.80 uses an exploit to push the custom recovery and also push the required root files (like su binary) into the system folders so that they will be re-locked in the system folders giving su permissions to the user. But this kind of exploit is not yet made for hboot 1.01 . So it is unrootable with software methods. The only present way to root it is to disable the nand protection by xtc clip (thus making the system folders writable).
And of course s-off has lot advantages over just rooting. S-OFF skips the signature check of files to be updated. Can change the splash screen. Enables the fastboot extended commands. etc..,
edit: And no. Unrevoked forever is not present for wildfire to make it S-OFF (even for hboot 0.80)
OK Thanks! That is clear for me now. I will give a try to few custom ROMs in the next few days.
