its a scare the way the Xoom was..is it encrypted bootloader? or is it just a locked bootloader? there is a difference..and at the last minute the Xoom was not released with encrypted bootloader. so i bet my money its not gonna be encrypted..first 3d phone ever?? come on theyre not dumb. just my opinion!

If its launching June 4th, they're probably not going to change anything about it now. The phones are probably on their way from China to the US right now.
I'm hoping something'll leak, which stuff seems to do when it comes to HTC and Sprint.

Yes! No!
Oh no, it leaked on my pants!
Seriously though, if the 3D is coming out as soon as it looks, then the bootloader is a done deal. However, that doesn't exclude the possibility of a leak for the engineering build so that the bootloader keys can be spoofed.
Even if HTC does intend to release some sort of way of unlocking and modifying the bootloader (pretty damn unlikely), it's still going to happen on a longer timescale than this.

My understanding is that they left the door open to change it. It's software and would just be a matter of sending out an OTA.

Probably never...it's been suggested that manufacturers will be skipping 2.3 and just move to 2.4.
And Sprint won't be releasing anything anyway, this is all on HTC.
Manufacturers make the updates, send to carriers, carriers approve and and bloatware apps and release.
Yeah 2.4 sorry, so probably not then? Wow that's lame.

My guess would be within the next 45 days.
We know the Evo is getting Gingerbread [2.3/2.4] so it will come.
It makes sense that it would come before Spring.
Ohh he meant sprint doesn't release updates and that its up to htc, no I know that I just meant sprint actually getting ahold of the final product and sending it out to us. I thought he was saying regardless of htc having a 2.3/2.4 update sprint will just be all natzi about it and not give it to us after they have ruined it via, bloatware and other disgusting apps. Lol sry my bad, so hopefully in 45 days cause this has taken way too long.

it's gonna be awhile for them to implement the new sense into ginger. then sprint would have to test before releasing it. if anything at best we might see it by late spring. ive never seen any documentation that even stated htc was working on it for the evo. just like the evo2 is nothing but a myth at this point.

I was thinking about getting the EVO 3D but I think I'm gonna wait..especially after reading this:
http://www.engadget.com/2011/05/13/htc-sensation-looks-to-have-signed-bootloader-custom-roms-look/
If the HTC Sensation appears to have a locked bootloader, I'm sure the EVO 3D will as well. But hopefully the Devs can unlock it if it is locked down. I bought the Atrix and it's still locked down. That's why I sold it....
here's a better link: http://www.androidpolice.com/2011/0...d-bootloader-custom-rom-support-is-in-danger/
The engadget article is kinda vague.
I think it most likely will have a locked bootloader. It can be unlocked, but going to take a lot more time.

how could it be since the phone are ready to ship? wouldn't this delay the launch? the more acceptable thing to do would be to give the devs instructions or fix it via an OTA.

Seriously, you guys can be upset with HTC but, they could have gave some generic reason as to why they are locking their phones and eventually things would have died down. They wouldn't have really suffered from it.
Instead, they went in the other direction. I give them credit for that. All this does is keep me as a customer.

HTC CEO Confirms EVO 3D Will Have An Unlocked Bootloader One Way Or Another

Yes, sir. Absolutely. This means devs will be able to cook roms, kernels and any other goodies we are enjoying on the current Evo......and more.
Evo will get a update second quarter soon confirmed from HTC also they said they will post a list of phones that will not be locked. Some still are.
First, this isn't a post about how to get root on 2.3. I know, at present, it is not possible. I know, I have tried pretty much every method imaginable
Anyway:
Where are we? I've heard rumors that S-off is coming from unreoked, alpharev x, team win will be coming "any day." Yeah, I'll believe it when I get it.
But, I think we are at the point where we are at HTC and Sprint's mercy. I mean, are we at the point where we are going to have to beg sprint and or HTC, to put S-OFF, or, somewhat more realistically, unlock the bootloader (or at least provide an RUU to downgrade?).
Anyway: Just discuss what you think about the plausibility of rooting the 2.3 release, and if we will ever see a free EVO. I am, sadly stuck on 2.3, as I didn't think about rooting, or know anything about it, until after I took the OTA .
Flame on! #johnnystorm

This isn't another one of those posts claiming to not be one of those posts about the locked bootloader that has been posted more than enough?

I don't think we're stuck at Spint's/HTC's mercy. We're just further down the priority list of the devs. That's fine, its the nature of technology. As STG posted, Alpharev and unrevoked are posting something tonight. That could be a universal GB crack (hope!) or it could be a rooted 3d/Sensation. Either way, OG Evo is moving up on the priority list. Its an old phone, but hardly forgotten.

HTC isn't helping much either, though they say that they are going to. The've announced that they are going to start sending out updates with the new unlocked boot-loaders in August, and the Evo 3D is third on the list so it'll be out later in the year. I haven't read anything about them sending out an unlocked boot-loader for the Evo 4G.
As was previously stated, not forgotten, but no doubt far down on the list of priorities.

If that "Something Revolutionary" is root for Evo Gingerbread, I will be voluntary slave to the devs for five years... Okay, maybe not, but Paypal donation, without question.
You guys are doing truly heroic work.
I still think it is obnoxious that Android phones (which ironically, is the "open" platform), have become more locked down. I am glad to see that HTC and other companies are starting to realize that this stuff is important. I think that it is at least a big step forward. I do believe HTC will follow through on their promise, at least for future phones. I don't think that they'd go back on their word. I'm just optimistic like that .
This "later today" thing is killing me. See; Now I am going to be on that page hitting F5 every couple minutes for the rest of the day .

You know what. I don'tget this at all. They started unrEVOked for the Evo 4g. But the suprising thing is that they still support the desire and aria. If it doesn't come out, we should try looking in the code for the desire or aria roots to seeif we can use any of that for the evo.
I am unrooted now because sprint tried to force me to buy the evo 3d for the full 500 dollar price, so I have to wait til april to upgrade (but I'm waithing for kal-el processors.

Dont be sad guys im sure the evo will get root soon. Yes alot of devs jumped ship to 3D but theres still plenty great devs that are using their evo 4G's. They had root a while back for the 3D but couldnt release it just yet because it could potentially show htc how they found root or what exploit they found and htc would patch it. I dont know who's trying to root the latest gb on evo but im sure someone is doing it...Now just gotta find an exploit in gb to take advantage of to unlock 2.3.

from root wiki:
Will you release the source code?
At this time, we are not disclosing the vulnerability we have exploited.
That doesn't seem fair! Android is about open source.
In some senses, we agree; but at times, a tradeoff needs to be made. Releasing the source code for this, we believe, would compromise the greater ability to unlock devices like these in the future. Given the choice between sacrificing the liberty of running code on our handsets and the liberty of reading the code by which we unlock it, we feel that the millions of handsets are more important. It is unfortunate that we must make such a choice, and we look forward to the day in the future that no such decision need be made.
