[Q] About to go Overseas - EVO 4G General

I am about to go Overseas for a long while...unfortunately. Anyway, I am still wanting to use it's WiFi functionality. Can I still use things like Market, Google Talk, Google Voice, Youtube, other stuff that requires an internet connection? I just need to have the cellular radio disabled for about 5 months. Will this work? Thanks guys...

Yes it should work if you have wifi it will be pretty much like a laptop kinda. But like you said you will not have any calls at all. It will be like a ipod touch Hope that helps

No Map showing on google maps on Hero

Hi all,,
I'm hoping for a little help, i have run google maps on my Hero and it connects to the sats, and appears to find my location, but no maps are showing, only a blank screen, have tried allsort but no good
Any ideas as i am now stuck !!!!!
Thanks in advance
This may seem silly but do you have an internet connection? Are the arrows beneath the 'G' or 'H' moving (specificity the right/downloading arrow)
think your right
my hero wont connect to the internet at all on the google maps, browser, layer app anything, have phone vodafone who tell me they dont sell or support the hero even though i have it in my hand...useless,,have tried everything to no avail, so am returning it shame it is a great phone but useless.
Have you set up an APN for Vodafone?
Regards,
Dave
To be honest using the Hero on Vodafone is a big let down as even if you set up the internet & mms on the device you will only get basic functionality ie just internet & mms. You won't be able to use streaming video, voip, use the integrated Facebook features or even use an instant messenger. All this is down to Vodafone blocking certain ports on their network. Sorry dude
fixed it
Have replaced sim with a new one and all seems well, 3g connects straight away and all the apps i have tried so far are working great, still a few to try, but facebook, beebplayer, skype etc all working, will report more when i have tried them.

[Q] Going outside the country for am extended period, can I skype?

Hey, I know you need to be in the verizon network to be able to use skype, but is there any way to make my phone think it's in the vzw network when I'm not hooked up to a tower?
I'm going outside the country for about a year, and will not have a cellphone, but will have access to wifi. I used a windows mobile phone last time with no issues. I ditched it a while ago tho, any way this can work?
I'm just thinking out loud but if you put the phone in airplane mode and connected to wifi you could test it w/o your vzw connection, just a thought.
Sent from my DROIDX using XDA App
I think airplane mode removes all data connection so wifi probably won't work :/
Sorry, but you're out of luck VZW purposefully crippled the Skype app so that it requires a connection to their network to use, and uses your plan's minutes in the process. Which basically makes it useless—how many people out there are really calling Skype contacts when they could be calling them on the phone instead??
You may have some luck with Nimbuzz; it's supposed to be compatible with Skype, although you never know how long that capability will stay in the app. Fring used to work with Skype, but no longer...

Thanks for the info. I almost forgot about nimbuzz. Works with only wifi enabled on skype.

I can attest to this. I used Skype (via Nimbuzz) over WiFi while I was in Spain two weeks ago. I'm surprised that it's still available within the app, considering Fring removed it. One thing I did notice was that Skype is no longer mentioned in the app description but is definitely on there as an account.
I think just recently Skype added WiFi capability. Might want to check into that.
Also, you may want to try SipDroid in combination with some cheap/free VoIP service.
SipGate/Gizmo5, etc. If you can't find a Free one that fits, look into Vitelity.net as a pretty good low cost provider.
Skype enabled WiFi for presence/text ONLY. Calls via Skype still require 3G.

can you call via wifi?
but wth do you want to call via wifi?
it costs money too. and extra connection.
why will you use wifi when you can call 24/7 with your sim all day ?

wifi calling costs many though?
i read on that app it just costs as much as cellulair data.
so why in earth will people use wifi calling? they can just call without wifi. its called a PLAN
I get invalid sim as well I am on vodafone and not |T-Mobile..
Maybe you could change it to work on Vodafone?
i have tmobile, maybe thats why? might have to do with the APN or something
yay this is good but the thing I see is that if you are calling it may be going to the t-mobile servers ofc if thats the case only t-mobile sims may be able to get unless we edit the apk or spoof our sim but then also im guessing the wifi calling costs so not sure how this would work xD nice though
totally non sense. how can someone call using wifi or whatever internet source you may have to any cellular or telephone number untill you don't have some service provider etc... if this wifi calling is working over the internet, what application is it using?
seems totally fake or irrelavent
This apps works because i put the phone in airplain mode and use wifi only.
If you guys having problem then maybe it your phone. But, my phone is working, be glad that you have wifi calling.
This an oct 22,2008 phone not even the iphone 3g has this feature.
I have t-mobile usa provider phone.

quite right, you think we can get a workaround?
I dont know im going to buy a new phone because i miss adobe flash content so much. I know this is out of topic but i miss my original droid before it got messed up.
G1 is nice when it was a backup phone in 2010. My main phone in 2008/2009 most of the time, until i sold my cliq. But, now i just want a phone with higher specs.
I try playing gameloft games HD/3D games that isnt working because of processor we have.
This developer now a days is coding their apps to make it work with 3.5 inches and beyond, with higher frame,Power vr ship specs.
I love my g1, but im going to buy either g2 or hd 7.
I think i speak for everyone having an phone for to long loses it power in long run.
And, wifi calling on this app only work with T-mobile sim card and wifi of course.
There is a wifi app.
it was ripped off the G2 and ported to the vibrant, so it is possible.
however its not that good.
it was taken out of most roms on the vibrant because of its buggyness/uslessness.
it drains battery pretty bad even when not running.
it uses minutes even when calling through wifi (the only purpose of the app is to get clear signal in places where there is none for tmobile customers and not to save on minutes)
Its just kinda buggy overall.
hopefully they'll release a cleaner app in the future, but for now its pointless if you get decent signal at home.
Honestly, this apps work fine to me. Im just disappointed that the developer now a days isnt supporting older device by coding the apps to higher specs phone.
Wanted to get an android phone with wifi calling capability for a friend who is currently in Iraq. My budget will not allow me to a buy a g2/mt4g, and a g1 seems like the cheapest option so this is where I began looking. So if I added an extra line on my family plan, grabbed a g1, rooted and installed this app would my friend be able to make calls as long as he has a wifi connection? Can anyone confirm this works without any access to the tmobile network?

I'm not sure about on the g1, but on other phones it works, but it still uses t-mobile minutes.
so you can be away from the t-mobile network, but you still need to have a t-mobile plan and minutes.
its basicaly for those who have horrible signal at home, but do have a wifi connection.

Droid X without service

So my works is psudo forcing me onto an iphone. I really dont like it but eh....
So my question is, does everything on the droid X still work if it doesnt have an activated data service, if i Does have wifi. I figure i could tether the droid to the iphone for things like, oh, navigation, or any other multitude of things the isuck doesnt do...
Navigation requires a constant data connection. Im am not sure if you have unlimited data with the iphone, but if you dont you will hike the bill up in a hurry.

You can still browse the web, check email, and play games fine though, when you have wifi

no..everything is stock
the only thing i have is the laucherpro
What do you mean with push isnt working? GMail push or basically that Talk doesnt work the way its supposed to? As in, its not really connected to the network?
I ask that stupid because I, my sister, a friend of mine and my GF all suffer from Talk connectivity problems since a while. We all connect to Talk using our Google Apps account, we are all on the same network and it works for all of us on WLAN but not via the mobile network. Basically, whenever we turn on our phone and check Talk, the contactlist will turn all gray, Talk will go offline and eventually reconnect. If we left the phone in the middle of a conversation, the "lost connection (...) msg will be sent when connected"-banner appears.
When I first approachrled my provider with a Cyanogenmodded HTC in my hands ai got laughed at, but the laughter stopped this morning now that I rubbed the brand new totally stock and still not working Note in his face. The support case is open, the network specialists should get in touch with me by the end of the week, the guy said.
Edit: I forgot my bottomline: and I'm yet to find another one suffering the same problems which makes me not look so good, being the only one suffering from that and claiming its the network and not me ;-) Thats why I asked that dumb...

Google talk has a "priority" system, so if you're logged into google talk anywhere else, it might be going to that device instead of your phone. (including gmail google talk)
