[Q] Keyboard (US vs US International) hardware or software coded? - Eee Pad Transformer General

Well the topic name says it all actually. Here in The Netherlands we mostly use a US International keyboard lay-out. The difference between the normal US keyboard are some special characters like the Euro sign that can be easily used with Left CTRL + Left ALT + 5 or Right ALT (ALT GR) + 5 to give an example. For full details on the differences google US international keyboard However, in windows the keyboard is software coded. So you can select different lay-outs by software. Is this also possible in Android 3.0/3.1? If so, can it be set to default? Helps me decide to buy one in the US or not (Transformer still not available here and I want the dock so bad!!)
Thanks!

No clue. I just got my tablet today. Have not been able to order a dock.

Anybody else knows who does have one

Interested as well. Hopefully I get my Transformer on thursday (from the US, if it was in stock locally), and if I'm lucky also the dock!
Would be sweet if it would be software
Anyway, will keep an eye on this thread. Otherwise if nobody answers I'll do so on thursday night after my exams!

I know the key layout configuration file is available in the system folder, I think it's called asusec.kl under system/usr/keylayout. You can see if you can change that to get the result.
If you do do tell since I'm moving to Holland in 9 days .

Haha moving to Holland! I will have a look.. however to get to the keylayout file i need root right? Currently don't see real use of root yes, except for this of course hehe.
Make sure you buy all your tech in the US before heading to Holland, it's expensive here

Good decision, everything is just so damn expensive here
So there is no built in option in Android to change it?

Just asked Asus Benelux about this. They say the keyboard in the US is the same (also in lay-out) as the one that will be available here in The Netherlands. Can someone confirm they can produce the € sign (LEFT CTRL + LEFT ALT + 5), that would mean it is US international If so, where can I buy one online in the US that ship to The Netherlands?
Thanks!!

Anyone, please?

I'm based in the Netherlands and purchased the transformer with dock from the UK. I have just flashed the latest 3.1 which is a US image.
I can confirm that the keyboard setting is software based (shift + ctrl) and that the € comes from right alt gr /Alt and 4
€€€€€€€€€€€€€€€€€€€€€€€€€€€€€€€€€€€

oh, and Amazon.co.uk will deliver to NL from free!!

Is the UK keyboard itself this lay-out:
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikiped...ational.svg/800px-KB_US-International.svg.png
Or this:
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikiped...d_Kingdom.svg/800px-KB_United_Kingdom.svg.png
?
And shouldn't it be CTRL + ALT + 5 or ALT GR + 5 instead of 4 ?
Bedankt!

it's
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...ingdom.svg.png
and is definitely 4! To select which keyboard mapping you want, you click left shift + left crtl.
Your question was about US keyboards, but basically mapping is software selectable.

no us international layout
just bought the keyboard dock and I'm struggling to make it work as us international, but without success... when selecting the layout it offers only us layout where I can't get ç or à... any thought on how to make it work as an international us keyboard? Thanks

Bought one too and works perfect here in The Netherlands. Be sure your Transformer is configured on your native language, you use the Asus soft keyboard and you can switch between lay-outs with CTRL + SHIFT.

If you go into settings -> language options, you can select which keyboard languages you want to use. I switch between and english and spanish keyboard all the time, just using ctrl+shift.

It's software coded. I'm pretty sure of that.
I've got a french layout dock (AZERTY) on my tf101
and when i switch to android keyboard on the pad instead of asus keyboard, my dock behaves like a QWERTY.
A prints Q, Z prints W ............ meaning it s not hardcoded.
when i switch back to asus keyboard, it goes back to normal
Meaning that :
1/ it s soft coded.
2/ The coding is in the "asus keyboard" module and not in the kernel or in a android driver, meaning that you need to have the native asus kb installed and in use for the dock to respect its layout.
Hope they ll soon include a separate driver because i do prefer android keyboard over asus one.

To have the alt + 5 to do € :
after you copy your keychar file and rename it to asusek.kcm edit the file and change under "key 5"
alt, ctrl, meta: none
to
alt: '\u20ac'
alt+shift: none
ctrl,meta: none
and you will have the € with alt+5

X7510 Keyboard - does it fit the X7500

Anyone know if the new keyboard that comes with the updated X7510 will fit and connect to the original HTC Advantage. If it does, I wonder if they might sell it as an accesorie for the original owners.

I doubt they will be for sale, but not sure if it will fit. I say I doubt this because they don't sell the X7500's now, unless you're lucky to buy parts on ebay or something like that. I really do need a new Keyboard for my as the view display's become a bit scratched. On the new one I would just put clear scotch tape on it before I start using it.
I am pretty sure i saw a link to a shop that sell the silver keyboard around these forums,do not ask me where, just came across it, no sure about the black one though, Ill love that parts were more available I'm after a touch pad myself.
Yes, I did the scotch tape thing as well (I noticed the clear plastic getting really scuffed very quickly) seems to be working ok so far.
Cheers
BR
I think the display is smaller on the new Keyboard, than they are on the X7500's but as far as connectivity I don't know if they are similar. I myself could use a new keyboard too.
im 99% sure they will fit. not sure if it will completely work though. the display is a bit smaller since the edges serve no function so they decided not to make it long but instead just have the plastic/glass the size of the screen.
the devices are the same size and dimensions so the size of the keyboard will be the same. connector should also be the same too so i'd say itll all work with just a few mods to the rom so it uses the mapping of the new keyboard.
I've already written and emailed htc a couple of times, suggesting they sell the new keyboards or at least the old ones for replacements. My main argument is that its a given the keyboard, if used, will wear out before the device. Surely, as expensive as our athenas are, they don't actually expect one to buy an x7510 just to replace the keyboard. Haven't heard from them, its been over a month, but what can you do? I would suggest others to at least send them an email. I don't know their thoughts, but it doesn't seem that this would hurt their business any. It would take a fool to buy the x7510 over nothing but a worn-out keyboard.
On a side note, my dollar sign now religiously inputs an underscore. Anyone else experiencing this issue, or know what might cause this?

if the x7500 has the keyboard out then the x7510 should have its keyboard available sooner or later. im sure a few will still ditch the new keyboard and we can buy it off them.
list of advantages for the 7510 keyboard?
Does anyone have a complete list of benefits for using the new keyboard on our old system? or any possible word on getting a backlit version for our future?

does it work
hate to bring up an old topic but im rather interested if anyone has tested using an x7510 keyboard on a x7501?
and if so, is there anywhere i can buy just the x7510 keyboard.
thanx
It will fit, but sorry, it won't work.
fair enough
thanx for the update
i might sell my 7510 keyboard, if i find no use for it
since i can type directy into the LCD screen itself
I plan to use the 7510 plain without the keyboard, and customizing it for full finger touch much like the iphone but waaaaaay better.
well if you sell the X7510 keyboard i'm interrested
it is working

Looks a bit strange to me what cktlcmd is writing above.
I just got a new X7510 for testing and the new keyboard is working quite well with my old X7500 ... say out of the box.
Measures are just the same and fits like the old one.
The touch vibration feedback is also functional.
Letters and most command keys as they are on the old keyboard, work quite well. For the rest you'll have to remember the strange key positioning from the old days of X7500
To fix this, I think only thing you'll have to do is change some system setting due to the different key mapping.
Then this threat may be the one to start with:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=323790
To look at : 2. Redefining the layout of the built-in hardware keyboard (thumbboard)
I've not done something of this kind yet but will take a further look at it in next time.
To compare with cktlcmd, I have an original WM6 german ROM. May X7500/X7501 make a difference? I don't think so.

How can it be working for you when there is a dedicated number row in the X7510?
You mentioned a thread for reassigning some buttons, then it's not working well. If to you that is functional, well to me that is crap.
works good with MagicKB lite, for full use wait the driver and kernel patches
Yes, you are right. I had not tested so far. Remapping wont do it all since there are still buttons which are not recocnized by the system.
These includes the whole number row on top as well as the "Caps", "Sym" and "Message" key.
Also "/" is a hardware button for the left screen function key, so you can not use it for something else.
But:
I found the nifty programm MagicKB lite which adds the abbility to handle different kinds of keystrokes. You can additionally add key functions by double klicking the key and hold the key. Time delay can be set individually.
That means you can put the whole number row one step down saying holding the key means the number above and double klicking the key means the special character above.
For example holding down "Tab" results in "1", "Q" results in "2", "W" results in "3" usw.
Similary double klick "Tab" to get "!" usw.
In addition
+you wont need "Caps" since you can also use "Fn+Shift"
+you wont need "Message" since it is same used with "SMS/MMS"
+you wont need "Sym" since it is same used with "Fn+Space"
It might be useful to leave the hold function for "backspace" blanc and map "Fn+Backspace" instead. Who needs "Del"? And so you are still able to erase multiple characters with holding "backspace".
However, it may also not work for all apps. I found the telephone app does not recognize the numbers typed this way
But all in all it is still a good alternative to the old fashioned keypad
==============
For development:
MagicKB lite is also usefull since it has ability to get the key codes for almost every key on the device including hardware keys (except power button) and has also a list of every predefined codes.
With this you could map every key to everything.
But since they more often use macro codes with a multiplier 0x10 it's not usefull to use it for key mapping, because it's not able to map those macro codes however.
But the real surprising comes when getting the codes for the hardware buttons since most are macro versions and they are all linked to each other in a certain manner.
Now I have coincidentally count the number of keys from each keyboard.
The new one has 7 keys more then the old one.
That's exactly the number of missing hardware buttons in the new X7510 version.
Maybe there's a greater meaning behind the missing hardware buttons and they sacrificed it in order for the new keyboard

yes, the Xscale processor has only so many GPIO's.
(also, even if it has some spare free GPIO's, I'm not sure HTC wanted any extra trouble of getting those to work)
yes, htc stupidly hooked all the keys and buttons up to GPIOs instead of abstracting them via some proper solution

REQ: Regional HTC Keyboard Alternatives

I do like the HTC keyboard but something that has been bugging me is the placement of the symbols. Specifically the currency symbols.
Unless i'm mistaken the Desire is not sold in America so why is the $ sign a quick symbol (Hold F) or even on the first page of symbols?
Yet the £ and euro signs are way back on the 2nd page of the symbols.
If anyone could modify it to create a UK and Euro version I think it would benefit a lot of users

Thank you very much for the links
Just created my own theme using the new version and a long hold on F gives me alternative currency symbols
Smart Keyboard is the best Keyboard you can use, Try it and see, it even has cursor keys!! I tried the free version and my typing improved so much over the stock keyboard that I paid the £1.40 or whatever it was straight away so I could get the predictive text and spell check and autocomplete features. It comes with about 6 skins.

Haha sorry!

Sick of the 'stock' keyboards.

I find the button to close together, even the android keyboard. What do yall think of them? What do yall recommend for big fingered dudes? Also, how hard is it to install a new keyboard?
I agree the Android keyboard is 'meh'. While I do wish the Standard keyboard had a larger space bar, otherwise I love it, I like Betterkeyboard with the Glass Orb skin. I know it doesn't affect the actual key size but I find that I'm a lot more accurate with that skin than others. Plus they have the Compact keyboard mode which may help. It was worth cost to me.
The HTC_IME mod is great...

And IF it still is too small, you can set it to show up as an old-style phone keyboard with the 12 keys, and then it will use t9 spelling for you...
I cant recommend shapewriter highly enough. Once you have used it (or similar, swype for eg) you will not want to go back to the normal "tapping" method.
PM me if you want the apk.
Yeah, HTC touch input is very cool. Smart keyboard pro is also nice, but if your fingers are THAT big, I'd suggest Blindtype

been trying a lot of different keypads. Swiftkey is pretty good for the language and predictive options but not much space between the keys like all the others. No matter what keypad i try i still seem to be going back to the htc one.
They really should release it onto the market officially.

Not in mine
What about ultra keyboard? I love it, everything is configurable!
I have the same problem that I don't like any of the keyboards out there.
Swype is slow for me - I only speed up if I swipe the same word over and over again, which rarely happens in real life.
T9 and Ultra requires too many corrections and having to double or triple tap to get the exact letter you want is annoying when the prediction doesn't get it right.
Other keyboards the keys are too small especially if you have to type anything a bit unusual. Blindtype would have the same problem though it's not available yet.
Anything else out there?
i have tried a whole dozen before someone here recommend shapewriter, it's really that good, once i got used to it, i don't even want to use 'keyboard' on my phone anymore
Shapewriter 3.0.9 (Non-expiring) : http://www.mediafire.com/?qwffb21f0804twk
Try Swift Key.........i prefer it over Skype and Stock
SlideIT for the best "exotic language support" gets my vote. Has about 18 languages supported - including the Nordics, including different keyboard layouts (so you'll see the national keys, too). Current version (2.x) looks professional enough, too. A nice bonus is the single-key language switcher.
Shapewriter has a nicer key-spacing, so less error-prone, but lacks advance language support feats. If they get the Nordics fixed, it'd be a good choice too.
Swype looks good but seems lag-ridden, at least enough for me not to trounce SlideIT at present (let's see, if Nordic languages come by).
Bottom line: since I found Shapewriter, and later SlideIT, I haven't looked back to the traditional tap-tap-tap-keyboards - no matter how polished, no matter how good their prediction is. Speed, and even a reduced error rate (at times, only!) - two top reasons to start using a sliding keyboard.
Give them a try. A good try. Once you get beyond that initial WT... barrier, writing on your phone will never be the same.
Just tried shapewriter on the evo and I have to second that so far it is better than swype. I just like the fact that is it real easy to add words to the dictionary.
I have now swiftkey, its new and so far it's working well

I had a few problems with the latest update of Swype.. UNTIL... I changed some of the settings (found the problem on there website, can't recall what the changes were now..) but now it's fantastic again.. and the sliding from the swype key to the Sym key to get the navigation keys is just genious..)..
Needless to say, I love it.. it is the proverbial dogs cogs.

homie I REALLY appreciate the fact that you took the time to hook up up with some seriously detailed knowledge; your post is far more useful than the "I like ____ more than ___."

[Q] Language support

I just want to double check with someone that owns one of these, but I type in Japanese a lot and I'd like to know how easy it is to switch between Japanese and English input, if at all possible, on one of these.
Of course, if it's easy like in iOS, I'll definitely pick one up, but I need confirmation about the language support.
Thank you.
Easy. You would download an app (usually free, not sure about Japanese) to input that language. Switching is very easy to do - click tap the keyboard symbol on the bottom of the screen.

I see. Is there any way to figure out if the app exists beforehand? Is it native by chance?
,_,
Indeed. I am quite interested in this as well. I would go as far as to say that it is a selling point.
Being able to switch on the fly between kana input and direct input mode inside Polaris Office would be a nice feature.
Can someone please make an in-depth review of this , i would really appreciate it!
The Eee Pad Transformer is not yet released in my country so sadly i can't test out the features but from some reviews I've seen , specifically one made for the Galaxy S II in which the Polaris Office app is presented there's this button which looks like a language input/method selector, so i'd guess that's the button you are referring to?
Ok so i'll answer this myself since i just received the transformer and played with it all day.
There are 2 "keyboard" inputs , one supplied by asus , which is pretty cool since it has that swype technology and the android one. None supporting Japanese.
There's only voice input method for it , or you could try a 3rd party keyboard app, called Simeji which works pretty well.
One can hope though , i'm pretty sure we'll see one in a future update from either asus or in the next installment of android, ice cream sandwich.
I can confirm Japanese works fine. I browse japanese pages and write japanese text no problem. There are many japanese input modules in the market. The best are Simeji and OpenWnn. If you want a tablet that works fine with Japanese language the transformer is great!

[HELP] Change '£' to '$' on Hard Keyboard Input

Hello all!
I just flashed the UK v2.2.2 SBF. Everything is fine however when I press the '$' on my hard keyboard I get a '£'.
Also...if anyone could adb pull the necessaries files to replace that would be good.
Is there any way to change this?
Thx!
You'll need to root your device and change the qwerty.kcm file. Refer to this thread for info ...
Are you sure you're on the latest firmware? This issue (surprisingly) has been fixed in the latest release of the software. No need to root.
What do you mean...I am using the latest firmware. I don't want the '£' to show when I press the '$' on my hard keyboard.

I think you've misread his post. The issue that was fixed was the "£" came out as "$" on the UK device, however the op is in Australia, and so wants to keep the dollar symbol (it may be that his Australian device has the dollar on the keyboard rather than the pound sign.
Even though the issue was "fixed" for UK users, it's a shame that Motorola used a non-standard pound sign; ₤ instead of £ (₤ appears to be a lira sign, not a pound sign).
Cheers,
Steve.

Neato, thanks for your copy of the file there.
I tried to modify it again to add TAB functionality to my completely useless (as an Aussie) Euro symbol key. But it only worked within text fields. I then discovered that the hardware cursor keys already fulfil tabbing needs in Android.
Oh well, at least I learnt something today.

Hey, if you want TAB use the "->|" key right above ALT/LOCK.
It is useful in the terminal (press it twice).
