[Q] Google I/O R800a - Can we expect official SW updates? - Xperia Play General

I will be receiving a Play from someone who received the device at the Google I/O conference, and it is confirmed that it is the R800a variant. I would assume that it's unlocked and unbranded, so I was curious if anyone who has one can share if they've received any SW updates for the phone. Will the phone receive the same updates as the other variants being offered around the world?
Also, the phone hasn't officially been offered here in the states outside of Verizon, so, has anyone with this phone been able to connect to the store to purchase games and the like (PS1 titles, etc)?
Thanks-

i have a white r800a and i was able to update soon as i open the box. also i am using tmobile service on mine

Thanks for the input. Any trouble accessing the store or the like?

I've had my white unlocked/unbranded R800a since May 9th (pre-Google I/O dev freebie) and no problems accessing the Android Market or using the Xperia Play launcher app to get new market games. The one thing not working is the search function in the PlayStation Pocket app. Crash Bandicoot is in there, but when I click search it says "This service is not available in your country/region.". I haven't even honestly used it until today to check since I primarily use emulators.
I'm on AT&T.
So far I'm on 2.3.2 but I'm not sure how many people have 2.3.3 yet. Gingerbreak does work great though

Hmmm Weird I always had 2.3.3 but I never had the facebook thing.

Yeah, it seems like R800As can't access the market to buy more PS1 titles, and I'm also on 2.3.2...
I use Snes9x, but what other emulators would you recommend that are free and work well?
Also (hang with me as this is my first Android device), what are the best, free, file manager, battery indicator, and RAM monitor?
Thanks!

I've got one of these too. It's Android 2.3.2 and both OTA and PC Companion say it's up to date. I can access the Market, but PSOne titles aren't on there. I tried looking at the Android Market website and found some of the games, but they all say "Europe Limited" on them. Is it possible it might be that Sony hasn't gotten around to making them available in other regions yet?

"Yeah, it seems like R800As can't access the market to buy more PS1 titles, and I'm also on 2.3.2..."
Mine can. I live in Canada but I still haven't seen an update yet. Still on 2.3.2
I have the pocket app and it has about 5 PSX titles. I picked up Medievil, good game!

Well it sounds like it works in Canada, then. I'm in the United States and clicked the search button in the PlayStation Pocket app and it told me "This service is not available in your country/region." I'm curious if the Verizon R800x version says the same thing?

It's so stupid how they are making so many versions of this phone and the FW.
I watched a Youtube review and the guy said there was to processors, one for the phone and one for the games. He also said the camera had a smile detection feature. Is this guy BS or did he have a pre release one that was different?

Well there are not that great anyway. Maybe they will give you access when there are better games on there. You’re not missing much. Cool boarders 2, MediEvil, Rally Cross, syphon Filter and wild Arms. Also Backstab HD shows up in my pocket app.
It is the only Gameloft game that does. Also most gameloft games I have purchased do not even show in my playstaion xperia app.
It seems they have bugs to work out for sure.

Sounds like BS to me. I've seen a lot of misinformation thanks to people who have no idea about what they're talking about.

I thought so too.

Well, I probably wouldn't ever actually buy a game from the market, rather, I just wanted to know if we would be treated like second class phone-users here in the states. Unless we go Apple, we always get the shaft with devices, FW updates, services, etc.

No ps1 titles here either, same message. But, uh, getting back to the original topic, what's the update path for these things?
Now that 2.3.3 is rolling out all around I figured I'd pop over to the dev section and flash myself an update. I hadn't realised that the US R800a was going to be this odd minority device without the plethora of pre-rooted images floating around like the other alphabet suffixes. Surely, giving these out to developers at a conference, they would've expected us to root these things (I sometimes forget that there's folks out there who actually get their android updates "over the air").
Anyone know how compatible these are with the canadian R800a phones (I'm presuming most of the region specific restrictions are keying off the sim card)?
For that matter, how much actual difference is there (aside from the radios) between the other letter variants?

This is a little premature on my part, but I'm starting to worry we may have dead-end devices.

Don't feel bad. The US usually gets things before us Canadians.
I was shocked to see Canada get this phone before the US.

Anyone who has an unlocked, unbranded R800a get 2.3.3 officially yet?

This is not an official update but is now officially a confirmed working method for updating to 2.3.3 with root for R800a dev units on AT&T. Furthermore, it should work in any region... for those not in the states. And, no bootloader unlocking required!
Cheers and thanks to emann56 and Willis111 (be sure to thank them):

Using the stock Rogers firmware I saw no update to 2.3.3, but after I installed the stock uk firmware I saw an update right away. Of course I used Gingerbreak first

App shows in Android market but not Nexus market

The app titled: "Scriptures (beta)" shows up in my G1's market, but does not in my Nexus' market.
Any ideas what's going on?
Did you do any of the following to your Nexus One:
1. Unlocked bootloader?
2. Enable root?
If so, "Scriptures (Beta)" is a *protected* Android application and will not show up.
If not, then it's a OS "support" version issue.
Cheers,

My new N1 is not unlocked/rooted, but my old G1 *is*. But it's the G1 that sees the app fine, and the new N1 does not.
Must be an OS support issue.
I downloaded the app directly from the author's website and it works fine.

Yup. If that's the case, the author needs to fix it and update it on Android Market.
It's annoying for us developers and the damn manifest and API target/limits when "new" stuff comes out... *Sigh*
Anyrate, good deal you got around it!

application compatibility
Your phone is listed as a 2.1 device in the market, and if the apps don't specify compatibility (they introduced a compatibility layer in 2.0.1) then they won't show up since they won't work anyway (well, they might, but the general assumption is that they won't)
I guess that explains why AppManager Pro isn't showing up for me on my N1. Annoying. I love that app.
This explains why, when people were talking about Nexus One Torch and I decided to see what it was, my G1 couldn't see it. Now I have a Nexus I can (and it's good )
There are some errors I think, because I want Bonsai Blast which I think I remember was demo'd by the Bonsai Blast google developer for either droid or 2.1. I think it was a demo for the new resolution, so I know it can't be that, and I don't think a google Dev would forget to update his extremely popular app.
Let the application owners know!
When the moto droid came out, I emailed a few developers and some even came out with an update the very next day!

If we take the conservative assumption that it must be listed on the Google's own market place before it would work on Nexus, how many applications are available at the moment? Is there good statistics on that yet?
Perhaps most of them would work on Nexus one anyway? Love to hear from people who have tried using the applications written for the older OS version and see if they are generally still compatible. It's hard to imagine how a version upgrade would upset the older applications too much.

Really the only set-back is the resolution. All of the hardware has exponentially increased. All of Androids apps are written in java, which is pretty standard and should have no problem running on all android platforms.
The only time it should be disallowed would be if a game were to be written for the N1 specs (which cannot run on the G1), and therefore not shown in the market for the G1.
I suppose developers don't want their games to look too pixelated on the N1 until they update the resolutions. It's a waiting game now, since there are absolutely NO games available unless you want to play solitaire.
Or you could email the devs to death requesting an update...

Tablet Apps

Under the market is there supposed to be a
Featured Apps for Tablets, or Tablets apps section?
for whatever reason I do NOT see one, I am using an imported wifi model (from USA) here in Canada, is that why? any hack I can do
thanks
I guess what im asking for, is, is there some kind of MARKET ENABLER for the Xoom
I have an imported Xoom as well, I'm in UAE. But I was able to install that app you refer to, it's called Tegra Zone.
I was however unable to install many other free apps that should work, even Angry Birds and a few others. It says something like "It's not allowed on my operator" or something, though it's Wifi Xoom.
I'm wondering if Market Enabler, or Market Access would work on a rooted Wifi Xoom? It should break this kind of location barriers.
i can install everything, tegrazone shows tegra apps only
but theree supposed to be (so i hear) a section in the ANDROID MARKET called 'Features apps for tablet'
which i dont see
ur prob is odd..if ur wifi only u shud have no problems, try a new google account, maybe ur existing one is tied to a phone that is using an operator in UAE
I also don't see Featured apps for tablet in Market. I have a wifi only Xoom bought from US, i'm in EU.
If I search for honeycomb apps in Market, it finds them and I can install them just fine.
Maybe the Market just doesn't show Featured apps for tablet in other countries yet? As far as I know, there are no honeycomb tablets on sale in EU yet, so maybe they will update the Market when Xoom launces in EU?
Anyway we will see when european Xoom is released, if it will show the Featured apps for tablet. And if it does, then we probably can use the european rom at least on wifi only Xoom.

Sorry misunderstood you. I can only see the sliding banner and featured free apps (6 of them), some of which I can't even install!
PS. I was just able to install Angry Birds using a VPN connection in UK. Before, it used to say Item not found when it tries to install.
So try a VPN connection in the US, it should show Featured apps(?)
so can someone who owns a xoom IN THE USA
actually post here and be like 'yes there is actually a features tablet apps' section in the android market
Yes there is actually a featured tablet apps section in the Google Market - at least for U.S. customers...
Yep im in us snd there is a feautered tablet apps section. But it has only 57 apps listed. Searching for honeycomb is a much better result.
have you tried via the browser market?
I can verify that when I was in the states I had the featured apps for tablets section. As soon as I flew out it disappeared. Very short sighted and stupid. If nothing else there should also be an option to filter tablet apps in the online market.
The screwy incompetence of big businesses with multiple minds working together is a constant source of wonder to me.

its sad cause the wifi xoom is actually out in canada now..
unless they can see this too
but im just screwed cause I got a usa xoom working in canada
anyone who bought the xoom from canada can let me know if they see it?
I also can't get Google books etc.. usually market enabler by Rac would work but we have no GSM
Perhaps an modified vending.apk?
I bought my xoom wifi in Canada. I installed tegrazone and I can see the featured apps no problem. I don't see google books or google translate...
i purchased a wifi version and I am in Canada and though there is a featured apps section on the market, its not tablet only apps. It kind of useless.
Yea got mine in Canada Wifi only, and I see no tablet section. Just regular old market.
let's start posting names of the best tablet apps in here...
Monster madness
Btw all I see in the tegra zone is like 4 paid games, one free one and a bunch of coming soon... not a single app. No options either...

It's April 28th fellow Canadians!

Release date today for the Rogers Xperia Play. I've been so excited for this thing. I'm almost positive I'm going to buy it, unless I get cold feet.
Is there anything I should know before I grab this thing? All the Rogers phones are SIM locked, but apparently a few sites are showing that these particular phones can be unlocked with a code. Can anyone else confirm?
Also, apparently the bootloader is locked for these phone too. I've seen a few methods to unlock the bootloader in order to root, but I'd like to know what methods {if any} will also work for the Xperia Play. Thanks guys.

my advice, if your a retro and current gen gamer your gonna need at least a 16gb memory card if the xperia play in your area doesnt already come with one!
Definately get some sort of case, the back is a scratch manet!
The latest gameloft games for xperia play are pretty dam good!
my only word of warning, if you cant root the device the gameloft games and ps1 games are going to rape the internal memory, you definately need to check you can root the device before you take the plunge unless your happy with around 50 market games/apps installed.
last bit of advice: you need this device!!!
Please let us know whatever you can about the phone, i.e. does it have a Rogers bootscreen... is it rootable or can bootloader can be unlocked, is the brightness adjustable or automatic, can bloatware be deleted.
Color me jealous. With all the negative publicity around Sony's handling of the PSN network here in the US and Verizon's 4G network failure stalling Droid releases the wait could get longer...

My letter to Gameloft. After the new Modern Combat 3 update.

Dear Gameloft.
What have you done to this game... New update made that game even worse, many players are dissatisfied, you have lost many stars in their reviews, they comply for the same things and it keeps piling up in Google Play...
I have three problems to describe.
First of all this update totally breaks Xperia PLAY controls - touchpad acting like a real thumbstick like on PS3 or XBOX 360 controller? Very VERY bad idea, we are barely able to aim, especially in multiplayer mode. We have TOUCHpad not thumbstick,
Second problem is you made the game slower. It started to lose FPS in many places, the whole gameplay is not fluent. The previous version was so beautifully looking and so fluent... Besides, changing graphics in main menu was a total nonsense. Why add bloom, HDR, blur? It runs so slow sometimes I must push the button twice to select some options.
The third problem is your multiplayer mode. It's slow, laggy, glitchy and easy to hack with tools that instantly sets the level to 50 and also there are many hackers with autoaim, god mode... They lasted for the whole match making their team a sure winner. Many players were quitting the matches because what is the fun with being killed more than 30 times by the same person and being unable to kill him?
So my (and many other users of Xperia PLAY phones and also many older phones users) is:
- revert for the previous controls OR at least make the right touchpad aiming "swipe to aim". For example Shadowgun guys made it better - their game had the same controls in the first version of the game - right touchpad acted like real thumbstick. Many people said this game had the worst aiming EVER. After the update they improved the controls, aiming is WAY BETTER.
- make the graphics FASTER, not BETTER. We don't need super ubercharged textures, awesome and jawdropping special effects (EVEN.IN.THE.MAIN.MENU...). We just need a nice shooter game which delivers us awesome experience and fun from playing such advanced and great game on our phones.
- finally improve the multiplayer mode. Make it faster, better, safer and more balanced.
I know the "iUsers" have better support on many games released by your company mainly because of frequent updates. Many people think you just sometimes forget about Android users. We want to play and have full experience and fun too!
Yours faithfully,

What do you think? They surely support Apple devices much better than Android ones, this must end...
Sent from my beautiful Xperia PLAY using xda premium
I think they still don't understand, and will not. Gameloft is iOS lovers, Android is on 2nd place, always -.-.
PS: Polak potrafi, Romanie .
But i think the swipe to aim on the older version was much worse than the actual version. Thumbsticks work not bad if you get used to it and you cam turn arround much quicker wich is importend in multiplayer...
Sent from my R800i using XDA
Yeah I also think the controls are slightly better now, but still not perfect.
As long as Gameloft still have paying customers they won't give a **** whether they're happy or not
I agree.
I dont understand how you could make LEFT thumbstick works as a 8-way controller like arrow keys while on-screen controls work perfectly
RIGHT touchpad is slugish and has some weird latency while on-screen, again, works perfectly.
MC3, first game that forces me to use touchscreeb instead of dedicated controls...
Don't every buy a Gameloft game again. That's the only language they understand. Seriously, people, big companies are not there to serve you, they want you to serve them instead. They're deaf to you.
This is Gameloft. Myself and others notified them of a problem with Shadow Guardian that basically makes it impossible to complete the game probably 6 months ago. They have still not fixed it.
That said regarding MC3, I thought the controls improved with the update.....
Hm. I updated but haven't played the new update yet, so I'll have to check it out first.
The controls are annoying me. The buttons are direct to the other button so that you press sometimes the wrong button
Gesendet von meinem HTC Desire S mit Tapatalk
Gameloft isn't competent about handling issues on iOS either.
They make the cheapest product they can make to impress the casual gamer's eye, then do whatever they must to get the most money for it without caring how "good" the product actually is.
ShadowGun released with Xperia PLAY controls FAR worse than SC:Conviction or anything Gameloft ever did... took one dedicated update, and boom!... Shadowgun's controls are on Dead Space's level.
Gameloft's a very big company... bigger than Madfinger. They can be that competent, they just choose to rush products instead. Eternal Legacy was released without the native ability to walk in a straight line on the touch-pad. They've been aware of this for nearly a year now... and done nothing about it.
This is one of the many reasons I love iOS and Apple and Gameloft

Verizon Xperia Play R800x
Hi everyone,
I'm new to this forum. I have a few issues and hope to resolve them. I'm a wholesaler of electronic gadgets and other merchandise. I have a bunch approx. 50 Verizon R800x in great working condition, but I have a few questions. I have conflicting report everywhere and trying to get to the bottom of it and figured developers and guys who know about this stuff would be the best to turn to
1. Is there a way to unlock the phones? Apparently the SIM card slot does exist but it's blocked off by a plastic blocker. I've been told it might be as easy as ripping the plastic blocker out, putting in a foreign sim and unlocking it using a PIN? However, from other forums I read that that's not possible.
2. Is there a place on this forum to sell merchandise or am I allowed to advertise the sale of these phones?
Thanks,

Pretty sure the R800x can't physically load foreign SIM cards, since it's CDMA (which doesn't use SIM cards). The hardware is just left over because they didn't want to spend a lot of money changing the specs, but it's not useable
The Marketplace didn't allow professional sellers the last time I checked.

Ouya vs google play store

I was following ouya development but I have to say its a surprise for me that I will not be allowed to play already bought games.
For me ouya was a nice looking google tv with pads, probably it will end up that way since devs will hack the living **** out of it Anyway the freemium/microtransaction model might be in conflict with the whole sourcy openness.
Who prefer cm based ouya rather than stock ouya market thingy?
I'm not to worried about it. The Kindle Fire have a closed system, but was able to get Play Store sideloaded. The Ouya is most likely going to get CM ported to it.
Sent from XDA app
yeah but the whole issue is to tweak pads controls so it will be useful on touch controlled apps. not sure if it will worm
It has sideloading, you just install Play like any other app. It's probably the 2nd or 3rd thing I plan on doing when I eventually get mine in
noted for future reference on my Note 2
This is going to be a great device to tinker with :victory:
Would just sideloading the play store .apk work?
From what I remember, the OUYA will only be running on Android - it won't have the Google apps framework. If that's the case, I think the Play Store by itself won't work unless gapps are installed as well. I'm sure that won't be hard to overcome (simply flash gapps.zip from recovery or something) but it's worth thinking about.
And on that note, if it's possible and/or necessary to flash gapps, do you think that will open up (easy) access to all Google apps on the OUYA? I'd love to see some kind of in-game chat through Babel or something. (Of course, that could be what's coming with the android games code found in the MyGlass app...)
GAPPS is just Google apps you can't download.
It may be possible to load the Play stare. Just depends all what it required to it to work. I don't know if there is something that has to be installed within the framework or not.
The bigger problem I see is that Google Play may not have listing for the Ouya and thus not a lot of apps will show up or be downloadable within Google Play if it did install.

that may be an issue for anything not delivered through the Ouya Store. I think if you want an idea what may happen, if you have another android device, rooted, and have Sixaxais App installed and Playstation3 synced, try running the app with it turned on.
.
Just get an mk908 Android mini pc, run all of the emulators, XBMC, Play Store, and Bluetooth PS3 controller. Oh, an air mouse also.
I have to say I am very underwhelmed and disappointed by my OUYA. Besides the fact that I had to look online to see how to even install the batteries in the controller because there was ZERO instructions in what's laughably called a manual, I had completely forgotten about the touch pad and spent a while trying to figure out why I couldn't play Saturday Morning RPG on it. I was really hoping to better the experience by either grabbing apps from GPS or worse case sideload them, but after reading the comments here and elsewhere I think I'm best off just using my phone and tablet for Google gaming and sell this so I can put the $ towards an Xbox One....now THAT is a "smart device" if I've EVER seen one!! :good:

I'd suggest you're the only person on earth who thought that the Xbox one looked like a smart device, it's been the laughing stock of the internet.
Ouya has it's own store, having the google play store would bankrupt the company being they would make no money and google would make it all...
I'm sorry you had so much trouble, but I can't say anyone else had issues figuring out these basics, what you have is not a retail product, you got an early version that is not ready for prime time on a software/manual level, so it's rather silly to expect a retail quality manual when it does not ship for another month to retail... we are beta testers, and I thought the fact that we were paying to BUILD it clued everyone in on that.

ha yeah, i hope he was being sarcastic. Xbox One is a joke....to gamers anyway
it looks good on the surface until you get to the details they didnt share at the conference
a few thoughts
- when i'm gaming, i'm gaming. i'm not switching to TV or Movies or IE every few minutes.
- not always online....but it has to check every 24 hrs (according to one report). what if u have no internetz or are in the military or my bro in law who cant get internet at his house (without paying thousands to have lines run)?
- pay a fee on top of the price you paid for a used game (need to hear gamefly & gamestops reaction)
- kinect always has to be connected. (also what if someone comes in the room & says "turn that XBOX OFF" there goes your progress.
- the exclusives are probably kinect titles for kids
- non-removable HDD (should be just in case of failure)
- indie developers cant self publish
- for our fellow earthlings, a lot of this wont work outside of US
- it's GINORMOUS!
- the XBOX ONE is so forward-thinking, it's not even backwards compatible with gamers.
anyway, finally got my distribution center email for my OUYA today.
reading up on all this stuff while bored at work.
I've shown a lot of people the Ouya, most of them actually wanted one after seeing all of the things it would do. I've had a few who just don't get it and I understand it's not for everyone, but what does kill me are the ones who are like "ok so it plays movies at 1080P and XBMC is nice and all, but why would I pay $99 for something to watch movies and play a few phone games".. .the facepalm comes in when I find out they say this while owning an AppleTV.

hah, thats hilarious.
i actually asked for a refund last friday, but heard nothing until the distribution center email today. ha. oh well.
we'll see if i actually have any time to mess with it.
I'm of the tinkering type so it was a no brainer for me, but I found I'm enjoying it even more than I thought I would, there are so many games out there I don't even want to throw down $2 for because they just don't look good... but here everything can be played for free, so I find myself trying every single game out there, I've gotten so many gaming time for nothing... and i found I loved some of these games I would have otherwise passed over.

cool.
so what all have you tinkered with so far, just trying games or some other more complicated things.
basically i want to know where to start when i get mine. should i try some games or sideload some other stuff on it, etc
Sideloaded Emulators, Web Browsers, Onlive, etc..
put the Amazon app store on so I could load up Opera Mobile, Dolphin and Maxthon browser, as well as file explorer..
you can sideload apps without any external tools if you just use the built in browser to download then go to the settings menu, storage, downloads and you can launch an APK from there.
the one thing to know is that all sideloaded apps go to the developers MAKE section.. but most stuff I've loaded runs well, still hoping to get my hands on a generation 2 googletv netflix apk.

I disagree 100% in that the op will be indicative of most general consumers that buy this at retail stores. That said, common sense suggests the retail units will have clear and concise guides as soon as you open the box. None the less, most retail buyers are going to balk at a proprietary market.
Their model depends on it, but most consumers will not care about that and will expect a simple, easy to start experience.
The bubble of this forum is not the best sample of tech knowledge level for mass market game systems. Lower the bar. If Ouya assumes otherwise, they may see good sales followed by a lot more returns than expected.
