There is 928432094832 threads on here about rooting...my question to you is, for someone who's been on the iphone for the last 3 years...
what is the easiest, dumbed-down way to root my MT4G? One with plenty of instructions and all the details I need to accomplish rooting without any issues.
The easiest I've found is using visionary to temp root first...then going through terminal emulator.
Look for Grankins thread...you'll have to download 3 files then enter a few simple commands and youre good to go.
That's the super condensed version. Check his thread for the walk through.

Where do you get visionary from? I can't find it anywhere in the market. Searches come up it's been removed from the market.

Hello, this board won't let me create a new thread because I am new and there aren't similar threads that I can see.
I followed the instructions to permanently root my phone using the unlockr guides.
I then installed the Iced Glacier ROM.
Everything went well, except that when the phone attempted to re-download all my previous apps there was a failure because at the moment I am over my data limit on T-Mobile and can only use wifi.
It seems the wifi connection wasn't established fast enough so there was no network connection when it tried to restore the apps.
Is there any way to have the phone go through the process again or have the phone download all the apps that it failed to get?
am I making sense here? I am new at this.

Just a friendly FYI download and install the paid version of Titanium Backup.
it will save this entire process.
Okay, thanks guys.
I will try those things
Hi everyone,
i rooted and s-off my g2 with visionary r14, the easiest way since i don't wanna mess with command prompt and adb...
when i go to HBOOT i see that is s-off, but i checked with a sim different than t-mobile and i figured out it's operator locked.
I tried to see if the menu simlock on the HBOOT was useful, but when i enter i get load mccmnc image error, is that menu helpful in some way to unlock?
what is the easiest way to unlock?
tnx

Yes SimpleMobile is made to work just fine with any T-mobile or AT&T phone even if you're not rooted or unlocked.
Why don't you just gfree the damned thing and be done with it?

For real. If you cant do that then you shouldnt have root.

never ever use visionary, its extremely unstable and you have a chance at bricking your phone every time you use it, at first gfree may seem hard, but once you do it its pretty easy, but if you are unable to use gfree, dont even attempt at getting root access

Yeah dude sorry for those guys. Their content is sound, but their delivery was awful. It's your phone, do whatever you want to it, however you want. Just know the risks and realize there is an inherent danger to your device no matter what method you use. Read read read.
And the VAST majority of folks here are more than happy to help, regardless of the problem. Just make sure you also search, search, search because it is very difficult to have a truly unique problem and someone has probably asked your question and someone else has probably already answered it.
Have fun bro.

There is nothing wrong with being a 'newbie'. All of us were in that position at one point or another.
The issue that this community has with newbies is that many of you have a simple disregard for forum RULES and POLICIES. Here's a start:
1. Search before posting.
Use one of our search functions before posting, whether you have a question or something new to share, it's very likely someone already asked that question or shared that news.
A simple SEARCH and reading would have revealed that Visionary is not for unlocking the device, only for obtaining root.
As has already been stated here for you, GFREE is the method you need to follow to unlock. Search for that and read the thread.
Your Welcome.
i been searching for long the thing is that all the guides makes it confusing, and u have to believe that to who doesn't know all this methods is lost, and i thank when somebody helps.
The cyanogenmod wiki has a very nice guide to rooting and unlocking with gfree, google "htc desire z rooting", it should be the second result
Hey OP,
When i first got my G2 (Desire Z here in Canada) I spent about 3-4 hours on just research and understanding of the rooting process, adb, S-ON/S-OFF and gfree. After I figured all that out, the actual process was only about 10 minutes. It was a great learning experience and I would be more than happy to give you a simpler and more broken down procedure if you would like. Let me know via PM.
Regards.
Hi op I sorta was a noob for a day or 2 everytime I switch devices I was on the android central forums think I new everything lol nooooot I bricked my first switched service.
phone the mytouch using the visionary method not the way to got I thought why not just get the phone unlocked and get true true s-off just in case and it has been the best thing I ever thought of.
I have not used these directions it does get confusing cuz some say it worked some say it don't them some start saying where does this or that go and then you have no clue where to start lol.
I hate to tell you to go to a different site but I used the new unlockr.com method which is the same gfree method with a mix of some of the true s-off guides.
because some file pushing commands where annoying so once you get a video guide on what to download and a writen guide over here just put the 2 together.
I moved the gfree file, busybox, data file to your data/local/tmp directory and moved the superuser apk on to the root of the sdcard and then followed the commands that actually use the file that you placed into your data/local/tmp directory.
you will need visionary need this just to get temp root to access the data privalge you need to get into your data/local/tmp but after you've read the directions a thousand time you'll know what I had directed you to do.
I know that was a lot to read but that is plain an simple ways to manually move the files to the spot you need them without commands to move them you can do it your self but read this and the true root directions and the unlockr.com guide for this phone 3 times before attempting.
I had unlocked and rooted my g2 in 10 mins instead of bringing another brick to my friends store lol

Hi, so im pretty noob with all this rooting stuff and all but i have decided to root my legend but am a bit lost in what to do. (probably due to googling alot of out dated info.)
so is it correct that there is no such one click permanent rooting method for the legend? or is it just a matter of removing this so called NAND lock. if it is can somebody please give me a link on how to remove this lock so i can root my phone with a one click method.
you can't root the legend like that (one click tool).. If you could your search on google would have given results on that too..

Correct me if I'm wrong, but as far as I can figure out, there is no way of rooting the 2.3.3 version of the Desire Z?
All guides start with downgrade to exploidable firmware, and that is not possible without gaining at least temporary root access, and all previous methods are broken?
Anyone has any ideas that work?

Of course it is! Don't you think there would be alot more angry people lol?! You have to obtain temp root on GB then downgrade to Froyo and get S-Off. It's a pain but I just did it on my friend's Evo Shift last month.
Thank you for answering I have spend several hours, and I can't get any of the temporary root solutions to function, they all seem to be ineffective against the current version?
Follow the XDA Vision wiki method. Shouldn't have any problems. I know someone that just did it last week and worked.

Can you go into more details? Like error code or anything? Are you sure you have adb set up properly? plus, drivers too?
If you can't get fre3vo to work (the only step which might not work, every other step is gauranteed to) use a different exploit, either zergRush or tacoroot will work.

Hello guys,
I just wanted to ask, you say it is possible to root the 2.3.3. and you also said how. Actually I spent like 3 hours today by looking for the guides how to root this phone, and I am really scared to do it without previous asking.
all your responses were great, but I am really a newbie to these things, and those names you said (containing techniques how to root) didnt ring a bell in my head. Could you please just send me a link with a guide that will work?

I rooted and modded two G2 using this method and all went flawless, I read about ADB and how to use it, I read the guide several times to understand what was going to happen.
Read read read and then root and mod. The phones that I rooted were my first and second ever, I am NOT a dev nor am I an expert by any means. My point is that again if you read the entire post before trying anything then you will be successful. My phones were both on 2.3.3 and the process is not an easy one but works well. Hats off to those who took the time and effort to write the guide.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1178912 this is the link to the guide.
Thank you for your answer. In any of the threads somebody mentioned the CM´s rooting guide on wiki, I checked it out and I got the idea.
which one would you prefer? the one posted above or the CM´s?
The CM wiki is based off that xda thread.
I would recommend the xda one, as it includes flashgc (for goldcard generation), which the cm wiki doesn't.

I have a friend that just bought an HTC Vision(G2) with 2.3.4 and he has been unable to downgrade using xda or wiki. He thinks 2.3.4 is incompatible with these methods. He is familiar with adb and previously owned a Nexus One. Anyone know if his opinion is wrong?
These methods do work.
If for some weird reason fre3vo doesn't feel like working, you can use zergRush or tacoroot to gain temp-root (which I linked in a previous post in this thread)

Adb can seem scary/difficult to setup to some, but it's not at all. Adb being a tool used in the rooting/unlocking process. See my signature for a link to a guide on setting up adb.
Please stay away from any so-called one-click rooting/unlocking solutions (especially Visionary), because a lot of them don't work, and some carry a high risk of bricking your phone. There is absolutely no risk of bricking your phone if you carefully follow the XDA Wiki guide. Read it first, and feel free to ask questions if you're not sure about something.

It can be done and quite easily (took a while but it was very smooth). I did it on my friend's EVO Shift recently with 2.3.4 which is very close to our devices (an uglier cousin one might say lol). Sometimes if you get stuck, it helps to take a break. Also, don't over complicate things. Commands while using adb have to be precise. I suggest using copy and paste. Also double check you commands before hitting enter. I am quite sure 2.3.4 still works with frevo. Maybe his drivers are mixed up. That's usually what it is. Make sure you can get all your functions to work before rooting like usb tethering and whatnot.
I've been spending days trying to figure out how to root this darn phone and it's driving me insane! It seems like every program or file I need is outdated or no longer exists. There are dozens of guides for different ways to root and they all seem to be outdated! I tried going through most of them and from what I've found, they all require stuff that is outdated and no longer has download links.
I can't find a direct link to the most recent HTC Glacier driver for Windows, HTC Sync doesn't notice the phone, and Android SDK Manager/Eclipse won't open up (even with updated Java). So I don't know what's going on with that. I have a GSN2 and successfully and easily installed the drivers for it, but this phone is being stubborn as hell.
I need a link to the most recent and properly working guide for the root process. If any experienced myTouch modder could direct me to the best guide out, I would greatly appretiate it. I feel like my brain is going to explode!

ok first you need to understand how to use a few of the android tools. you dont need the entire android-sdk and definitey dont need to use eclipse to root your phone. all you need are two tools from the android-sdk, fastboot and adb. I'm not sure which guides youve been following but heres a link to one that i promise will contain everything you need including links to all the tools.
