There is 928432094832 threads on here about rooting...my question to you is, for someone who's been on the iphone for the last 3 years...
what is the easiest, dumbed-down way to root my MT4G? One with plenty of instructions and all the details I need to accomplish rooting without any issues.
The easiest I've found is using visionary to temp root first...then going through terminal emulator.
Look for Grankins thread...you'll have to download 3 files then enter a few simple commands and youre good to go.
That's the super condensed version. Check his thread for the walk through.

Where do you get visionary from? I can't find it anywhere in the market. Searches come up it's been removed from the market.

Hello, this board won't let me create a new thread because I am new and there aren't similar threads that I can see.
I followed the instructions to permanently root my phone using the unlockr guides.
I then installed the Iced Glacier ROM.
Everything went well, except that when the phone attempted to re-download all my previous apps there was a failure because at the moment I am over my data limit on T-Mobile and can only use wifi.
It seems the wifi connection wasn't established fast enough so there was no network connection when it tried to restore the apps.
Is there any way to have the phone go through the process again or have the phone download all the apps that it failed to get?
am I making sense here? I am new at this.

I just received my phone in the mail today and I am attempting to root it.
This is my first android phone ever and first time hearing or even attempting a root.
The videos and threads on it seem simple enough. All I need to do is follow instructions.
HOWEVER, the set of instructions I'd like to use (two of them actually) both say I need to be on version 2.2.1 and I currently on 2.2
How do I get to 2.2.1?
Any and all help would be greatly appreciated!

Will do that then. Thanks a lot.
Was looking to root the phone so I can use the HTC battery cycle and SetCPU to increase my battery life.
That and a few other things I see highly recommended such as Iced Glacier Rom or something close to that. Can't recall off the top of my head.

BINGO! Thanks a bunch!
Hey guys ill be joining this side of the forums now on monday and I'm really excited. Just I'm kinda confused about a few things and I was wondering if anyone could help enlighten a few things for me.
I know what Root is, S-off, Cid yada yada and I'm not new to rooting at all. I have adb and etc and I kinda want to do this on ubuntu because my vista is kind of janky at times.
Now apparently there is Temporary Root and Permanent Root and of course I want Permanent root, s-off, etc.
1.Now from what I read there has been apparently an update that updated the G2 to 1.22 or something like that? I read its rootable apparently but you need a windows application called gfree or something? Is this possible to do using just ubuntu?
2. Now to obtain root, s-off etc do I have to obtain temporary root first, then permanent root? Its kinda confusing coming in a noob to this device and trying to figure this all out. And do the methods vary with which firmwire your phone comes with? I'm assuming mines will come with the newest OTA since I'm receiving it Monday.
3. Also from what I'm seeing apparently having S-off and root and what not matters on what rom your running also? I don't want to flash a rom then end up loosing root or something. And Noo I DO NOT want to stay stock once I obtain root. I'm kind of a flashoholic.
Thanks to anyone willing to help I really appreciate it.

Shouldn't yall warn him about using VISIONary first? SOMETIMES, no NOT all the time but SOMETIMES people get stuck in a boot loop from using the VISIONary method. I would not recommended it, if you have know how to use ADB, use it. I'm pretty sure that they have ADB for Linux because they do have the Android SDK on Linux(at least I think they do). All you need to do in order to root with the safer/recommended way is ADB. All you have to do is ADB Push some files to your phone then run them on your phone's Terminal Emulator App, its pretty simple. Though I have not personally rooted a G2 yet(I get mine tomorrow) but I have spent at least a week learning about how to root the G2.
Check out the wiki, explains how to root using rage+gfree.

Never mind just read it. This is actually really simple. *facepalm* sorry guys for the thread space ill get my topic removed.
I had the 26.03.02.26. I updated it to the newest one in the radio thread in the dev forum. I gotta use to those long radio version numbers.

Thanks, just confirming that 26.03.02.26 was still rootable with the wiki root instructions, there seems to be some confusion about if you can still root the 26.03.02.26 radio with the wiki, and you just confirmed that you still can.

Hey,
As far as I know, you need a computer of sorts so that you can get the full root and S-OFF as SIM-Unlock is optional depending on your preference. It is possible to root without a computer via VISIONary (which is not recommended by this community) but it will not S-OFF your phone (which is a good idea to do and is recommended by this community).
Best way would be to ask a friend who does have a computer and borrow theirs to root and S-OFF your phone via ADB. Otherwise, you're stuck between a rock and a hard place.
Good luck!
This is about the most painless route I've seen for rooting:

Yep, there you go. There is no need for computer. the files can be downloaded and moved to proper places with a file manager (like Astro in the market) and then the commands can be ran with Terminal Emulator (also in the market).

This is the visionary method (one not highly recommended). It has messed up some phones, but worked for others. You don't need a computer. However, as stated before I would recommend trying to borrow someones computer to root your phone with adb.

Permroot via visionary is not recommended.
The post above is fine.

Some people reported failures using permroot that jacked their device. I have never had a problem, personally, but it's use has been discouraged overall. Also, if the permroot did not take, users were experiencing additional difficulties with other root methods. Again, never experienced this myself.
Sounds creepy lol I had no idea about that, I used visionary as well and no problems so far, I think I pretty much had to cause I needed to sim unlock

Hello everybody! I'm new to the forums. I also got a really big question to ask. Well I usually root my phone with Visionary using a TempRoot. Then I updaed my Evo Shift via OTA, or going to the HTC Software update thing and now I can't really root my phone I guess. Is there a solution to root my phone even though I have Gingerbread? If not right now, maybe soon? I really want to use the tethering app to tether to my PS3. PLEASE HELP!!!!
As of now no there is not. And it might take a while before there is one. Idk if your phone already came with the ota update, but if it didn't you could have waited cuz the same day the ota went live there was a rooted version here already.
Just about 2 hrs later it was rooted.Pretty much a fundemental, if htc or sprint push out an ota update it will unroot your phone.

You can use the sprint RUU to downgrade to froyo and then root it, worked for me, I'm not on my computer so I can't link it but it shouldn't be that hard to find. And instead of temp rooting it there's a nice gui in the dev section that will perm root it pretty easily then u can flash the rooted 2.3 update through CWM

You will need a computer but if you remember setting up your gingerbread update it asks if you want to back up your device on google..... I have not been able to do tis all day at work i tried 3 different devices and no go im starting to think that its not possible and you will have to wait for a new root.. (which is never a long wait).... Thanks to the fine people here at XDA.
I've been spending days trying to figure out how to root this darn phone and it's driving me insane! It seems like every program or file I need is outdated or no longer exists. There are dozens of guides for different ways to root and they all seem to be outdated! I tried going through most of them and from what I've found, they all require stuff that is outdated and no longer has download links.
I can't find a direct link to the most recent HTC Glacier driver for Windows, HTC Sync doesn't notice the phone, and Android SDK Manager/Eclipse won't open up (even with updated Java). So I don't know what's going on with that. I have a GSN2 and successfully and easily installed the drivers for it, but this phone is being stubborn as hell.
I need a link to the most recent and properly working guide for the root process. If any experienced myTouch modder could direct me to the best guide out, I would greatly appretiate it. I feel like my brain is going to explode!

ok first you need to understand how to use a few of the android tools. you dont need the entire android-sdk and definitey dont need to use eclipse to root your phone. all you need are two tools from the android-sdk, fastboot and adb.
