I watch youtube video alot, using tubemate to download video, 1280x720, 640x360,
My ms2 can't play 720p video smoothly, been using all video player I can install.
My friend htc desire can play a same 720p video very smooth, but my ms2 can not, can only play 640x360 smoothly.
Is any ms2 the same or just mine?

Milestone2 is not well in 720p hardware decoding.
Mine is playing 720p very smoothly. I download clips from youtube (by keepvid btw) to my PC and then transfer them to phone. And no matter what player am I using it's smooth as hell .
I was traying some clips in 720p in mp4 format played via DLNA from my notebook, and was very smooth. You are writing about avi or mp4 movies?

cant be movies because i recently saw a documentary in 720p on my phone in flight and it was superb. no lag, and really smooth
perhaps the person who has issues is running something memory intensive in the background?
It greatly depends on what codecs are being used.

why use anything else than H264 anyway.. use Mobo Player (best video player ever, smothest playing ever and almost all formats you ever need ot play)
even plays 1080p movies with ~21FPS (1,4ghz overclocked) on my MS2..
I have the same issue on my MS2 @@
I also downloaded a 720p mp4 video via Tubemate from youtube
Playing of the video is not very smooth
especially the first 30 seconds, it really lags
After playing for a while it becomes smooth again but still may have some random lag
I have rebooted my MS2 before playing the video so as to clean up RAM, but the problem didn't solved.
The MoboPlayer have similar performance as the stock video player...do I need to download any moboplayer codec?..
Does anyone know how to solve this
*update : I am thinking, would it be the problem of sd card? what class of sd card are you guys using? Is my Toshiba 16GB C4 sd card too slow?
I have downloaded SD-Booster and set the cache size to 2048kb
By the way wich one is correct Mobo codec for M2?
I just know it is ARMv7.

Hi,
I've been searching the net for any information about MKV playback on Android and found this one:
mobilegadgets-review.blogspot.com/2010/04/htc-desire-plays-mkv-divx-videos.html
Can I trust this source? Anyone tried this one?
You can also get the yxplayer from Android Market and I would recommend this.
But I don't know whether it has mkv playback. The only tool I know is called "RockPlayerBase" which is able to play mkv but not very smooth (averaged 16 fps on my Desire). I assume, you can get this tool from here... anywhere^^ just search.
I hope, I could help you. Correct me, if I'm wrong
16 fps doesn't sound too promising.. Thanks for advice though
16fps if you are lucky! more like 5 most of the time. I think the rockplayer is a software player so its using just the brute force of the CPU. Thats not bad considering most Atom based netbooks cant play MKVs smoothly without an HD decoder card...
Maybe one day we will get some hardware assistance..
Not sure if this will help at all, but mkv2vob converts mkv files to either vob or mpeg, and does it very quickly. (I don't normally recommend conversion apps as they're usually really slow.)
If either vob or mpeg will play better then I really would recommend giving it a try.
http://www.mkv2vob.com/showthread.php?tid=1
Also highly recommended for PS3 users who want to watch mkv files
Try RockPlayer. It's awesome.

That is yxflash and an old version at that a newer one is available in market works a treat for all i throw at it
Also using RockPlayer aka: DemoPlayer
Considering time wasted converting files and saving space, when viewing movies, better idea is to stick with divx/xvid/h.264?
There's nothing that currently plays MKVs properly in all I've tried incl. the aforementioned apps. The RockPlayerBase cannot play H.264 vids. It will however play XviD/DivX totally fine upto VGA resolution (plays upto 1.2Mbps VGA vids fine that I've tested).
Act 1 player, Meridian, the stock player - all play H.264 vids perfectly. HD 720p vids at that, and in some vids, upto 10Mbps plays well. But they don't play AVIs or MKVs.

Plays 1.5 MBPS full WVGA videos just fine, too. And you can just use Rock for XviD/DivX/MKV/AVIs and Stock for H.264. Don't be a lazy bum
Afaik, you can't set different default programs for different video file extensions. All types of videos are Videos.

Then you're getting different results to me there. It doesn't play WVGA with the 4 vids I've tried, all low bitrate DivX. Greater than 480p XviD/DivX, it doesn't play without severe problems. The ~1.5Mbps vids you're referencing are DivX/XviD?
There's format and container. Containers can hold many different format vids. AVI and MKV are just containers.
Do you realize that most MKVs are in the H.264 format which it doesn't play?
And that it plays XviD/DivX format AVIs? Not MSMP4 or MP4 AVIs.
As for H.264: I use Act 1 player... after using it, it's not possible to go back to the stock player

can play 720p High 3.1 MKV+DTS file flawlessly.
Desire use same AP, i think that desire can play 720p MKV.
I've tried this too,on numerous occasions but with no success :/
I also use RockPlayer But what i do i convert all my Movies (that i watch on my Desire) with Badaboom (Nvidia's official vid converter) to a h264 file in mp4 format, and it plays perfectly [so if u have a nvidia gfx card...i strongly recommend this method, since it's ultra fast ,if u have an Ati,try xvid4psp 5.0+ converter]

I can confirm this. All solutions above, (rockplayer, mobo etc.) are crap in comparision to diceplayer, (that if you patch your existing lib as suggested).
I previously postet a thread on this in the general section. It really makes the phone to a "almost" perfect hd media player.
I converted a 1080p video of iron man with Freemake to .mp4 format which eventually has a size of 3.19 GB. converted for android with a resolution of 800 x 480. It just doesn't want to play the damn video does anyone know how to fix this problem? G-force not in HD is played perfectly however it has a much smaller size.
Thnx in advance!
What video player are you using? have you tried rockplayer?
No no rockplayer however the standard video plaer should play .mp4 and it does for G-force however the HD video of 3.19 GB doesn't play how can this be?
maybe the encoding has not worked properly, or codecs are missing....
maybe you can try to download rockplayer from the market (it is free) and then play the files (I've had one file not play on the normal player, but it played perfectly on rockplayer.
When playing .mp4 the codes used should be h264 for the video and aac for the audio streams. The .mp4 is just the type of the container.

Hehe
Currently the DHD can't even play 720p .mkv videos
It will never be able to play 1080p, but 720p .mkv is certanly possible.
I hope when VLC finishes it's port to Android it will support hardware playback of .mkv on our phone
BTW The best player availible now is either Rockplayer or Vplayer (paid) if you're looking for stability and performance.
Can anyone confirm whether the DHD offers native divx / avi playback it does this require third party software such as rockplayer or mplayer?
It requires software codecs to play those file types

Interesting to hear, thanks. I didn't think it supported such formats out of the box.
dont waste your time with rockplayer, it loses sync all the time now and the dev wont trasferre your licence when you change phones.
im currently using vplayer alpha - it free and tbh excellent app. ive not noticed any sync problems since loading it, and it handles 720p with no problems.
give it a try

I agree, just tried the native player and I can feel the lagginess and the framerate is slow... Rockplayer played the same video smoothly...
I tried to play a 1,5 GB Xvid with the stock player, which wasn't a big success, then installed the free rockplayer from the market, which worked fine, excellent playback and the screensize makes it very watchable (gotta use earplugs though)
Playing 720p Flv videos with HTC Desire HD
Hi all! My main use of a smartphone is to play 720p Videos on the go. I've tried all of the last giants (Htc Desire, Sony X10, Hd2 with Android roms...) using native videos player,Rockplayer,Alphaplayer but my 720p flv videos did not play smoothly. Now I have a Samsung Vibrant, so far so good! All of my videos play with no issues.
My question is: does the Desire HD capable of playing 720p videos in flv format smoothkly (Ps:I'd like to buy it for the bigger screen and 8Mpxls)?
Thanks

why dont you just re-encode it to a file format that takes less powered to decode ?
Hi. Because I have more than 500 Go of movies, mangas and many things in 720p flv format so I don't have time to change them when I want to travel.
I might be wrong but I THINK the SGS is king when it comes to movie playback and the formats supported out of the box.
I can't speak for the DHD yet as I don't have one but I'm sure someone will be able to check this out for you.

Is true, the SGS plays everything without problems. It handles full dvd 720p mkv`s like a champ, even with dts sound. I hope DHD can, as in terms of power it could handle them too.
Can anyone confirm if the dhd can handle the same as above?

No, it can't. The DHD (as stated in the specifications) does not play mkv files out of the box. It's capable of decoding the video stream (which is h264) but the audio is ac3 which is a no go with the stock player. I tried vplayer but the results are disappointing - it's like a slowmotion video. What you can do is reencode the files copying the video stream and encoding the audio to aac, and saving it in mp4 format. It takes a couple of minutes for half hour movie, so it's no trouble at all. Still you might be careful what bitrates you encode since the DHD has to have some limit on that.

Thanks all for the feed back! Now I think that it's better for me to stay with my Vibrant for watching my HD videos (even if I like the 8Mpxls and dual led flash of the Desire HD). However it's just impossible to have the perfect smartphone isn'it? My dream: I hope some day we will have an Android phone with 12Mpxls 25 mm wide angle, Full HD recording and playback in any formats (specially flv for me), 4,3 inch or bigger screen with 1280X720 resolution and MEGA AMOLED!!!
Keep on dreaming

I hope your talking about 70mb SD encodes cause 70mb 720p would give you major eye cancer .
I dont think its the file size its probably the way the file has been encoded down to 70mb thats the problem. Since i have not had a problem playing anime i would watch on my pc.
I have just watched [Coalgirls]_Shiki_01_(1280x720_Blu-Ray_FLAC)_[5B75CA00] (430mb)(bitrate : 1600 kbps) with no problems. No lag in audio or subtitles and video was like 95% smooth, only the occasional jerk for a second when panning. Try a normal sd encode @ like 200ish mb.
I also had no problem playing The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya NCED theme (Hare Hare Yukai) SD video with karaoke soft-sub from here in the test videos part. Which is 30mb & bitrate: 3400 kbps.
My phone is rooted and bloat removed dont know if that helps....?

I've tried many players including DicePlayer, VPlayer Video, RockPlayer, QQPlayer, MX Player, MoboPlayer, etc...
ALL above players lag when playing 1080P MKV files. The only player that JUST about manages to play 1080P MKV files close to smooth is VPlayer, the rest lag and the movie appears to be playing in slo mo...
Other problem is that every couple of seconds the movie buffers which results in a split second pause which is annoying. Audio is slightly out of sync too...
It is not my memory card as I'm using the 32gb Sandisk ultra class 10 micro sd card which is specified to play full HD movies without a problem...
Read/write speeds are 30MB/s so I would of expected it to perform better...
I've read something about increasing memory card speeds in the Tab by using some application which boosts & gives you the absolute maximum read/write times from the memory card.
Could anyone guide me on a good application which gives you the best performance out of your Micro SD card?
Also, what else can I do to make HD 1080P movies play smoothly on the Tab 7.7?

I don't know if I'm missing something here but, why would you want to play 1080p files on a 7 inch screen? My 1080p movies in mkv format are anything from 10gb to 30gb.
I transcode with dvdfab or similar which brings an HD movie down to not much more than 1gb at the quality is still brilliant! And there are no problems in read speeds and loads can be stored.
Or did I miss the point somewhere?
