I know I am going to cause some trouble by asking this but why?
On taking my new Orange SPV M600 out of the box, I have to agree a bit sluggish, but this was mainly due to Windows.
After a little tweaking with the registry and some third party software it is now flying.
I originally thought that putting third party software over the top of the system would slow it even more, but know, the opposite was true. Using the standard windows task bar and start menu was dreadful. I tried a number of third party softwares such as True Toolbar, Handyswitcher etc, finally settling on Wisbar deluxe.
Everything now opens as soon as it is selected no nasty lag like windows. With some skinning and removal of Customised Today the phone looks great and is performing great. That is apart from my wired hands free. I can now answer and close calls with the button, but it does not activate voice dial when pressed, so I can't dial out hands free. All prevoius phones, Nokia and SE did this no problem, so why not this phone?
Anyway, back to the point of ROMS, why keep flashing?
I just got me one of those SPV M600 things and its not that slow, but I havent added anything else to it yet. Would you care to elaborate on "registry tweaks"? Im new to XDA/phones and havent started messing about yet.
I can not remember all of the tweaks I used, but there is a big section somewhere in here listing them. I have them somewhere on the computer but my filing is a mess and I can't remember what I called the text file or where I put it.
Basically the tweaks are just simple things like increasing cache size for fonts, programs etc. Moving file storage off main memory to SD card, disabling and enabling etc. It is claimed by doing this that the system will speed up a little. I am not sure if any of these actually did anything or if it is just down to Wisbar. All I can say is that when I click on a program it fires up straight away, before it could take a second or two.

Actually, the rule about flashing is: If it's not broken don't fix it.
People upgrade because they want to get rid of bugs or add features like AKU 2.0 that includes push mail and some other stuff.
Also some brands are better that others in some ways, and worse in other ways. There are several ROMs for the Prophet: Dopod, i-mate, Qtek, Orange. Finally some people cook their own ROMs throwing out useless stuff and adding apps they 'must have'.
All in all if you are pleased with your phone there is no need to change the ROM. When I got my Jamin it had the i-mate 1.xx ROM so I upgraded to 2.13 to get the AKU 2.0 goodies.
I always belive the latest is the greatest, even if its not. I still run the latest. While the release notes say "Added this, fixed that" they also contain a lot of fixes and changes not documented.
Hi all.
Thats actually a very good question. From my experience you dont really need to change anything. Maybe as you said some registry tweaking or some basic settings. However as someone already said, the golden rule should be if it is not broken dont try to fix it.
On the other hand you might want to change things with no reason, just because you can.. and I have to admit that it is hard not to do. Then you have to make sure that you know what you are doing cause otherwise you might end up spending your day in forums try to fix whatever you &^%$ up..
Take care.
Thanks for the replies.
I have to admit, when I first got the phone I started tweaking, then I found this forum and others. Once I discovered unlocking and flashing ROMS, I was very close to doing it. Then I remembered what I used to be like on my PC. With old systems like Win ME, I used to spend about 70% of my time tweaking and fixing, and only 30% actually using the damn thing. Not what I want out of a phone.
Just by messing around with skins, I have already managed to lose my phone dialer all together, I was left with a blank screen, so I had a phone that could not phone. I have it nicely skinned and running now, but I was never able to get the Orange dialer back.
Guess the only time I will flash my ROM is when there is a genuine update and it is covered by warranty, that way if the ROM is bad, Orange can give me another phone.
Thanks
I look at it same way as i look at windows.
My windows isn't broke but I always use Windows Update.
Why do YOU update windows, if you do at all. I guess im not sure if this is advisable, but that's just the way i do it.
Regarding upgrading ROM, MOST of the time, it makes the device faster and adds more features ( i never install extended ROM ) so I always upgrade when there is a new one.
I've downgraded ONCE. And only the RADIO because 1.11 didn't agree with my device.
There are ways to Backup the device, change to a different BRAND/VERISON of ROM then restore the backup. This makes changing ROM very easy.
Anyway, I have nothing better to do with my time so i upgrade whenever a new ROM comes out.
Sorry to but in again but I simply must disagree with the Windows update analogy.
I have my PC set to auto update as well, but Windows XP runs updates in the background and doesn't delete you data in the process.
ROM upgrade means HARD RESET, and unless you have a good backup a long restore process.
Also there is the danger of communication / power interrupt during the flashing and a bricked device as a result.
Finlay, like with your radio ROM, some OS updates have new bugs as well as fixes for the old.
But I do wish it was as simple as updating windows - then I would say, update away, couldn't hurt.
My analogy was based only on the reason for updating, not the process itself that you are stating.
What I mean is if your windows works, why update?.... This thinking... Not the "ritual"...
Sorry i did not explain that clearly. The guy just asked why update if you are content with what you have.... It has nothing to do with "I would update only if the process were simpler" like what you stated.
Sorry for the misunderstanding
I upgrade because I can cook my own ROM with better application suite

Because it's full of holes and most of the updates are plugging them.
I think the main point is you dont have to upgrade, you can if you want, its a matter of choice.
I like to always update, some like to keep the same and have never hard reset in their life. Im on my 9th this week :S but it is a new device and im still figuring it all out.

Hmm, then i guess your advice to NewSPV is to upgrade.
Me too, as i said in earlier post, i will always upgrade to the newest ROM, then just downgrade if i don't like the changes. Unfortunately it isn't as easy to downgrade from Windows SP2 hehehe

I was talking about Windows, not WM5.
My phone came shipped with an AKU2 rom and it's fine - after a little tweaking. I'm not going to risk bricking my pride and joy with a rom upgrade - as so many people have done already on this forum.
Can anyone name some good places to read about how to flash your device with a new ROM?
Also, I was wondering about what the "extended ROM" is. Is it basically partitioning part of your storage card for use as "internal memory" ?
Thanks for the info guys!

Look at the top left of this very page and you will see a link to the wiki section of this site. How to flash is in there.
The extended rom is where the operator adds thier own customisations (over and above what M$ provide) to the device, for example Orange and O2 add their own options in there and they install when the device is powered up for the first time or when it's hard reset. If you get access to the extended rom (again look in the wiki) you can manipulate what gets installed and if you're really clever, add some of your own stuff.
Don't ask me how to do these things as I have not tried myself, the risk of bricking the device is too great for my liking.
cool, thanks paul

Actually, it is virtually impossible to brick your device by manipulating the contents of the extended ROM. It is only accessed once, during first boot, and event that can be avoided by quickly soft resetting the device.
Basically it acts exactly like "file store" used to on WM 2003 devices, the only difference being it is hidden so ordinary users won't get rid of the operator junk.
In my case it was very nice of i-mate to provide various goodies there like voice dial (should be in ROM) anti virus (not only useless but damaging crap) Skype (could have just downloaded from their site, but nice thought) and backgammon (toys are always welcome).
But now ofter the initial installation it makes all the sense in the world to save these cabs (9MB~) to my PC and have extra 10 MB storage on the device.

Okay here's my challenge to you...
I came across this link over at XDA:
http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/forums/viewtopic.php?p=391825.
So I did a little Google'n to see where this phone was available...and of course it's not available to us telecommunication-ally challenged US folks.
So here's the company that sells them; but of course they're in Dubai:
http://www.iteqonline.com/en_index.asp
After some more research I found the new updated ROM for this phone, and so I proceeded to unpack it so I could find the applications I wanted.
So--my challenge to you is who can provide for us the following applications from this ROM?
1. Answering Machine (Figure 7)
2. Background Effects (Figure 11)
3. Phone Recording (Figure 12) - granted I don't think this will work on the phone I want to try it on
4. Java Applet (Figure 27)
5. Voice Recorder (Figure 30)
6. Filter SIM and Send DTMF (Figure 20)
7. Magnifier (Figure 24 and 25)
All items should be in their own respective cab files for easy install for anyone who wishes to use it.
Thanks and Good Luck!
You can download the dumped rom from here
You'll need 7-Zip to unzip the archive. 7-Zip is available at http://www.7-zip.org/

On the Answering Machine....
First the Wizard has a hardware limitation that prevents call recording unless you are using speakerphone. I would assume this would eliminate the Answering Machine ability.
Second, my assumption would be that it would be in the PhoneDialer App. So you would need to install their Phone.dll and the control panel applet for the settings.
Third, a registry dump would be useful to see any hooks to the AnswerMachine.dll.

Any thoughts on where to get the registry dumps?
I'll do some more Google'n
I would love to see someone rip out the answering machine. I think a lot of people woudl find this very useful...
I just took the java app (exe) out of the dump and dropped it in my storage card on my mda. it seems to start up fine. i dont have any jar files handy to try out. It shows an option to install them from either the storage card or "my documents". Im no tech wiz but it seems like someone who knows what they are doing could get all of these features, or maybe some of them from this to work on a wizard.

Due to the hardware design of the Wizard, WM5 has no access to the incoming audio stream. bluetooth routing is also done independent of the OS as I understand it. There simply is no way to 1) send audio out to the GSM Phone conntection or 2) record to other person.
The idea of an answering machine on your Wizard is a pipedream.
Previous post deleted.
Nice challenge, I'm interested in the answering machine.
I would be interested in the Cyberon Voice Commander which appears to add a lot of features to the relatively inferior voice speed dial we have. Also the Easy-Touch Menu would be nice, it adds the option of phone profiles and a few other handy items on one menu. It looks like it's a non resident program also so it would be handy for our performance challenged phones.
I don't have any experience with ROMS, otherwise I would attempt this myself. Is this possible?

Wow I am glad I didn't know this when I downloaded and installed PMRecorder. Although the calls are quiet (unless using speakerphone) they can still be heard. But I assure you they work. If we could get the answering machine to turn on the speakerphone automatically, we could even screen calls!
Maybe the answering machine is a new upgrade to Voice commander!

Check this article out... it has information on the methods used to hack bluetooth enabled devices.
The easiest way to avoid this is 1) Turn your BT off if/when you're not using it 2) Set your device to "Not Discoverable by other devices." 3) Smash your friends PDA to bits...J/K
Even so, those clever hackers always seem to find a way around an obstacle, if they didn't we wouldn't have the useful wealth of information found on this website... Not all of em are bad.

Ok I am not an expert on this but while various bluetooth attacks may allow access to phone records an such (particularly on older phones) non of them should allow complete browsing of the file system an a brand new WM5 device. Your device is a TyTN equivalent correct?
I think what has happened is that at some point your friend had a chance to pare the two devices so now he has complete access. Check your bluetooth settings and delete any devices listed there. Also delete any incoming ports and uncheck 'make device discoverable'. This should solve your problem. (If not I would very much like to hear about the technique used - out of sheer scientific curiosity of course)
And by the way, if he does this to you more that once to prove that he can, he is not much of a friend...

Any way I am waiting for someone to jump in and tell me that i am not up to date and there is a way to hack in to any WM5 device by BT without users consent and get full control of file system.

It's not that hard to find it. I wish they used image files like .bmp or .jpg for the skins so we could at least reskin it to make it like the newer generation iPods.
I got it years ago, but there are a few things which could be improved: the skinning, setting a default music folder, D-Pad action button support, ... (all of this is of course my own personal wish list!)
Hope theres someone who knows a bit about how to do this stuff (and maybe more...)
Why not just apply this skin to WMPlayer? http://www.pocketgear.com/software_detail.asp?id=14162

Because of 2 reasons.
1) It's ugly as hell.
2) It doesn't have the scroll wheel function like the actual program does.
pPod is still easy to find for download. I found it about a week ago.
I agree :-D
but a "real" options or settings page with a few more options to choose from would be great ( i wish i knew how to edit pPod :-D)
no source code still, I've been trying to start something from scratch but for the life of me I can't figure out how to play an mp3 on the mobile platform (first time programming mobile). It's embarrassing, can't even find any example source code that works.
I broke my interop unlocked Ativ S. Instead of buying a new one I bought the Ativ SE from Amazon without a contract. I've read every post with "ATIV SE" in it and searched the forum for hours looking to see if any progress has been made with the ATIV SE.
The phone came unlocked, however I can not receive MMS messages or turn on internet sharing with out using a friends Verizon sim card. I have T-Mobile service which is the source of my issues.
Fiddler works to install most other manufacture APPs. I did a stupid thing though and upgraded the phone to windows 8.1 because of Cortana. The Nokia Access point will not install.
Is there anything that can be done with the ATIV SE yet? A lot of post say "all Samsung devices" but pre-date the Ativ SE's release. I've contacted Microsoft, Verizon, T-Mobile, and Samsung trying to figure out the issue or get the phone flashed with a generic ROM but support only wants to point fingers at other companies and rush me off the phone.
Any information is welcome. I've tried customizing the APN settings every way I could and had T-Mobile resend correct setting countless times and still nothing. Verizon did something with the ROM to make it miserable to use on another carrier. I can get the diagnostic app to install but it seems like codes have changed from the Ativ S.
I spent hours trying to get the correct LTE settings for T-Mobile and 6 weeks of frustration makes me want to go buy another Ativ S.
I can't recommend anything besides wait awhile. No work has been done on the device as its specifically manufactured for Verizon.
I would attempt to call Samsung. Say you got an update from Verizon and the spinning gears won't stop spinning after 5 hours. I've heard that Samsung has offered onetime flashing, but I don't remember where.
Once you get a GDR3 version of the phone, try editing stuff inside diagnosis or APNs.
Did you ever get your problem solved with the MMS or internet sharing? Im in the same situation.
Any help is much appreaciated.
Have the mms and Internet Sharing ever been solved for the Ativ SE for WP8 and Official WP8.1? I would like to buy one to use for at&t if it is.

I've been trolling the forums for months off and on. So far there's been progress but after FINALLY being able to roll the device back to WP 8.0 GDR3 and upgrading to the "real" WP 8.1 it looks like Verizon has made things much more difficult. The APN settings are locked and hidden. I was able to get LTE data working again, but MMS and Internet sharing is FUBARed.
Maybe I can't follow directions, but it seems like every way to edit the registry has been patched after upgrading to Verizon's version of the OS.
Root Tool is available in the APP Store, but I can't get it to function.
The Registry Key information that needs editing is readily available on the forum, but I haven't found a functioning method to do so.
If anyone has been able to successfully edit the Registry on an ATIV SE please provide the info on how you did it!
I have no idea how to use the MBN creator either.
What I have figured out is:
1) Able to flash device back to stock
2) Side load unsigned developer apps
3) Find necessary lines in Registry to edit
If anyone has a modded image that works with WP8_Binary_Downloader_Ver._3.54.exe, or can help me put the last pieces of the puzzle together, that would be awesome!

Awesome job man! Keep it rolling. You just made me one more time closer to getting this phone ? Remember to write everything down ?
Root Tool works perfectly fine for me on an Ativ SE with 8.1.1. Unblock RPC by placing the txt file in the Documents folder, unlock your phone with WPPT, deploy the WPSystem unlocker xap, patch Root Tool using the provided instructions and a file explorer (I use Pocket File Manager, I've used others successfully as well), and then once you open the newly-patched Root Tool go to the install xap section, press install (without setting anything up), and it should say failed, but that's fine. Then you can use the included registry editors (the regular one and the Samsung-specific one) with dword and string values. Works fine for me, including interop unlock (but some deploy attempts result in capability errors because of the new security measures). Bootstrap works but not enableallsideloading (including the 2 versions posted later in the thread). All aesthetic changes work perfectly (small font/large screen, 5 action buttons, change model number, accent colors, etc). You can do pretty much anything you can do with an Ativ S, just remember you're slightly stifled by GDR3 and/or 8.1/8.1.1. Let me know if you have any questions or need help. With the small font/5 action button setup and the newest firmware, it's easily the best WP experience currently available. If we can figure out how to rotate the display 180 degrees, we can just enable the navigation bar (which works fine on the SE) and we'll not only have the usb port on top, but we'll also have access to 3 other buttons that can be remapped via the registry.
@tonbonz posted some info regarding using the SE with mbn creator:

I haven't attempted anything with this information yet, but I may later this week (possibly tonight), and I'll be sure to report the results when I do.
I'll be posting any info I get to this thread, so keep an eye on it:

Also, in regards to the potential issue of new updates breaking exploits, I've found an update lineage that results in the latest OS (8.1.1, OTA) with the stock/GDR3 FW (including the gdr3 diagnosis app, which is different from the 8.1 version). That isn't necessary yet, but it may be in the future and we can always flash back to gdr3 to get there.
Hey G.moe, thanks for the info, so is your MMS & Internet Sharing working with your ATIV SE then?
I managed to get my Internet sharing and MMS working, except I when I recieve an MMS it says file no longer available on server. I think I missed a setting somewhere.
does anyone have any idea where to directly edit the MMS settings in the registry?
That's good to hear man! You're getting there. Your progress is making me a day closer to buying this phone ;D I hope G.Moe can help you out.
GTF696, any luck on the MMS working yet?

Hi. I am using Ativ SE in India, everything is fine but for data i am getting only 2g speeds
I can even launch field test, looks like its blocked
Kindly help me
I just recently purchased an Ativ SE for use on T-Mobile. Like many of you I have been scouring the web for the best solution for the MMS fix as well so it gives me hope to know that through the registry editing it seems you've made some significant headway GTF696. From what I've been coming across this does seem like the most likely way to get this going especially since Verizon has already been duped in this on other devices like the Lumia Icon. Also I've come across a few post that mention having solved the issue and want to know if any one can confirm the method. I'm a new user so I can't post link but if you search "[Q&A] [Research and Reference] Samsung ATIV SE (SM-W750V) – Research and Development Apktop" in google the first link is from someone saying their method on how they setup the registry to workaround the MMS issue. Hope this is actually helpful and useful for all of us and gets us a step closer to fixing this issue
it's not perfect but the ATIV SE, after registration editing, does 100% work on T-Mobile. Unfortunately Verizon had Samsung heavily modify the OS and remove features that allow for APN Modification. The Methods I used should work with any GSM carrier however what you specifically need to do will be carrier specific. If you search for ATIV SE on the forum you should be able to find everything needed. Unfortunately, while the ATIV SE is one of the best windows phones available it's under valued, under supported, and Verizon made it a pain in the ass to use unless it's on their network. I wouldn't recommend this device to anyone, not even Verizon customers, for that reason.
The general idea of what I did was wipe the phone phone, Flashed the original Rom, upgraded the device Over the Air, and then installed the registry editor and customized a few strings. All of which has been talked about in detail on other posts. You HAVE to have an SD card.
