[Q] OK, My HD2..what a freakin mess! - HD2 General

Ok, folks. I'm posting this to see if you may have some ideas. I have all the sudden begun to have problems with my HD2 starting approx. 1 month ago.
1. I couldn't get win 7 to recognize phone; worked fine previously. I use the Energy Rom from about 4mos ago. Never had problems, worked flawless.
Searched all over to find soulution, never could get the sync to work. Removed Micro sd and copied files that way.
2. The latest. I'm a pilot for a major airline. When I was in STL(St Louis) my phone was working perfectly. I thought I had put the phone in flight mode. We flew to LAS (Las Vegas) didn't notice my phone was in roam mode the entire time. this was yesterday (Fri)
I then went to turn off flight mode to check msg etc. I noticed that my antenna icon was red. ie no signal.
I have tried everything I could while on the road, including a hard reset. I regret doing tthat, it jsut increased my mess.
I used PIMBackup to make sure evrything was updated. Then I did a hard reset to factory(energy). No good. Still dead radio/signal.
I restored my backup, now most of my programs won't function, lost the registrations etc.
I was under the impression, PIM Backup would return things as they were, when backed up. I apparently was mistaken.
I'm writing this in hopes of some suggestions ideas. I'll go to T-mobile tommorrow to see if Sim card may be the culprt.
I'm short for time, as I have to go flying again shortly, so trying to cut down on research time.
So questions:
Being in phone mode on that flight, could I have done something to the radio. Would flashing the radio again help. will I be ablt to flash, since I can't sync to windows 7.
Why didn't PIM Backup return everything as it was. Are there some switches I was unaware of, or something I needed to do/select to have it work properly?
Now, since I can seem to get the phone to sync, will I be able to reflash the T-mobile Rom to get a new phone.
If you have some links, I'll read those as well. Any help appreciated. I would search all this myself; as mentioned though. Time is limited for me.
Thank You for any assistance.
Best,
David

PIMBackup only really backs up contacts, Mail/SMS acounts.
SPB Backup is the type of program you would use to restore more options & programs/reg data ect.
Sounds like files/ROMs could be a bit corrupted. might be wise to save what you can from SD card & device & reflash devise ROM & radio & see if you can get things working normally under energy ROM.
Loss of signal/connection in LAS could be settings related to radio bands or again coruption.
Some people have a few issues with phone bands/connection with Android/WP7.
I think a fresh ROM install & reading up on backup options & software will be the only way forward.

Thanks Mr. B That explains the results fron the PIM stuff.
Not sure How I can reflash energy, when Jic an't connect to WMDR (?) ie the active sync replcement in Win7. I'll do somne research, on how toget things set up.
Thanks for the insight.
Best,
David

Manually put phone in bootloader, connect USB, watch for serial to become USB, flash.
The phone doesn't need to connect to wmdc, that's badly written instructions.
Also, make sure you go along to MS and get the latest wmdc. The one that ships isn't the latest.

Devices gets slow

Hello all,
I experience the following problem with my Tytn (gory details about versions and so avail upon request): With age the device got slower and slower to the point that now e.g. ActiveSync times out if the device was not soft-reseted for a long time.
Still, even after a soft-reset the device feels sluggish and unresponsive -- compared to what it used to be.
Granted, it has a boatload of software installed but the "slowness" got worse w/o adding new softw.
IIRC from the old PPC days the old WinCE used to suffer heavily from memory leaks, and the only way to recover from that was to hard-reset the device.
My question is:
- Did anyone else have this experience ? Is it a known problem ?
- Is it actually a appl problem and not WM5 related ?
- Does a hard-reset and restoring from backups solve the problem ? Or do I neeed to hard-reset and install the software all over again from scratch ?
TIA,
Florian
P.S. Sorry I don't have some "hard facts" (mem usage/whatnot), so far it is just an empirical observation
When I originally got my device I tried installing a load of software and this seemed to eventually break the device. It does start to perform slower the more you mess with it. I upgraded the firmware and was careful about what I installed and the device works great now.
If you performed a hard reset and re-installed your applications, you would notice an increase in speed. I recommend the latest firmware also.
i have just replied to similar comments that may help here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=291882
rather than retyping. the bare device works really really really good, so it may relate to your apps. install standard released apps, with care, and do backups regularly to restore if necessary.
also, i have found in the past that large volumes of contacts and large amounts of diary syncs does slow all devices down. one poster said he had over 1000 contacts and wanted to know why phone calls were slow to start (caller id and searching duh...)
so watch what you install, and only install what you really need
install anything that is needed on bootup into memory
hide icons point to your sd card
dont have sd card readers on the today screen
follow the registry hacks and use them
dont install today screen stuff to sd card
accept that the sd card may be disabled or fail on occasion, thus you dont want your device functionality tied to it otherwise card fails, device fails
manage your synchronisation of data
there is soooo much more. make sure you are on the latest released rom for your device. ensure your sd card does have fast read and write ability...
read wiki, do some research. all else fails, HARD RESET and see if it runs at normal or good speed. then test each and use each app carefully, using a backup app to restore as you need to.
this is m$, and i equate wm5 to windows 95, we are a long way from xp status, so play nice, be gentle, and manage the apps you install, they way you install them, and the data u need.

WinMo side keep vanishing... any ideas why?

Hiya
I got my Shift a few weeks ago (BTW I LOVE IT, even with its little foibles!) and have so far done the ROM bashing to get WinMo 6 running as much as it can - thanks to the guys who made this possible. I've left the Vista side alone as I track down an external CD drive so I can install XP instead.
But for some reason that I can't determine, the WinMo side sometimes just seems to disappear completely and no amount of pressing the switching button will bring it back. In fact it seems that nothing short of turning off Vista and leaving the battery out will revive WinMo.
I've had a good look around this site for ideas, but I haven't found anything similar/ any solutions so would appreciate any hints or tips to stop this happening as it's clearly not very useful to have to start up vista when I only need WinMo.
Cheers
Sam
Well, no replies... I never did find out what caused it.
BUT I did re-do the ROM and it's been fine ever since In fact the USB Tool seems to work (stays connected and connects more consistently) after redoing the ROM which is a bonus.
Similar Problem
Hi
I have been having a similar prob, which has just started out of the blue.
I have not installed anything or made any Rom adjustments as yet, so I cant point to any particular cause.
I have found that using the "reset Snapvue" button in the advanced section of ShagCtrl, seems to cure things " until the next episode"
David
I think I have the same problem. In my case, it seems to be related to a particular type of SIM Card.
If I use my data-only card, SnapVue freezes after a few hours if it's in a HSDPA coverage. In a GPRS only coverage area, or if I set the shift in flight mode, SnapVue keeps working fine.
If I use my older voice+data SIM card. It seems to work fine and stay on without problems.
If you have the time, try setting flight mode, and report back if it stays on. If a few of us have the same problem, we can try and find a solution.
Hi,
Yes, my sugestion indeed would have been to re-flash the rom or to try out another rom. It seems it helped.
b.t.w. Installing XP is a good Idea!
It's rather a lot of work and fidling to get everything running, but it is much faster.
Also take a look at windows 7. That also is a lot faster then Vista, but a bit slower then XP. (just a first impression) I have both of them installed.

highly unstable hd2, help...

hi all, i resently got the hd2, updated it with the new rom, and thereby hoped to be free of errors... however i seem to experiense a whole lot of error, more than i had expected... sometimes it wont come back from sleep, it only turns on the backlight of the hardware buttons. then i have to kill it by removing the battery. also sometimes it wont establish connection to the net, then i have to turn off the radio and turn it on again. the phone is 7 days old, and i have had the battery out 20 times allready... is this unusual? should i contact htc? and what are your experiences with their support?

I would recommend a hard reset and not installing any software or doing any "tweaks" and test that for a bit.
You should find that fully functioning and stable (on 1.66 ROM) from there add the software that you need and see how that goes and don't bother doing the treaks, registry hacks unless
a) you know what your actually doing and what it changes andb) you actually need the change.
ok, I'll try that is the new ROM from htc that unstable?
as above.... test it with just the 1.66 rom, nothing added, and if it's still unstable get it replaced under warranty.
1.66 ROM is also unstable...
..or if I may refraise: Using ROM 1.66 is no guarantee for stability. My HD2 crashes or locks often when I use the phone functionality. No program or app have made the phone crash. I have tried to monitor what apps are running but I´ve not been able to conclude anything. Hard reset has been done followed by a backup restore.
Now I am uninstalling programs each at a time to see if this improves.
dont restore your backup, there could well be something in your backup causing a problem.
(depending on what you have backed up)
hard reset, or ideally task 29 and reflash then just use it as it is.....
use ms myphone to backup your contacts and sms if you need to.

I am a flash whore! (There, I admit it)

I don't know how to stop. I'm so addicted to it that it's hurting me. Lost my wife, job, even all my other phones. '
Everytime I flash a new ROM, I have to reinstall and re-setup everything.
Argh! I need to stop. Someone help me.
One senior answered to my same question (I´m a noob):
use SASHIMI
no other answered .................
Looked up SPB-Backup Manual: says: autorecognition of ROM-Upgrade - Mode
Have also installed SK-Tools (for reg. hacks):
also has a backup util, but have to dig into it this weekend to find out wether there is ROM-upgrade-mode
LOL.
The reinstall and resetup everything is what saves me. Pisses me off so much that I flash my new phones 5-6 times until I find a custom ROM I like, then it's over, I want a phone that works, has everything I need on it, and that's all. So I don't reflash anymore until maybe 6 months later to try something new, if there is. I used to do "preventive" reinstalls at pretty much that interval, but will now stop that (read below why). And I make full SPB backups regularly, keeping the last one on the storage card, so that if something screws up I can hard reset and restore backup in 5 minutes and be all ready with everything again. It's already happened to me to have a bad crash during a day out at work, or worse being a weekend or more away from home and the phone needing a hard reset, leaving me stuck with an empty phone for several days... annoying as hell.
If you reflash every other day I'd say you can use SASHIMI or so, but if you intend to make an install that last I wouldn't advise it.
Once I was happy with my setup I decided to do a clean install, my HD2 was working well but as I had installed/removed so much stuff and tweaks I wanted a clean start, so I did an SPB backup just in case, prepared a SASHIMI folder with everything I had on my phone at that moment, including the couple of reg tweaks I had done, etc... so that it should have been all sweet and quick.
Hard reset, SASHIMI autoinstall... and result, the phone was nearly unuseable, dead slow, unexplained freezes, etc... all with only programs and tweaks I already had before, all what was supposed to have changed is the crap from one-time used programs gone, but no.
I got pissed off at that point, hard reset again, restored my backup, and it's still working fine 3 weeks and a lot more installs/uninstalls later.
Like I already said, Winmo has humors, there are times where you can do nearly exactly the same twice, and once it will screw up, the other it will work just fine, totally unexplained. There are times where you get lucky, an install gets nice and stable, stays such in the long run (6+ months) even if you don't particularly take care, then you do a "preventive" reinstall of the same stuff and nothing works. That's what happened with my Kaiser just before I changed for the HD2. Just like sometimes you can run 2 weeks without a soft reset, then suddenly it crashes 3 times the same day, while doing exactly the same stuff as usual.
The dark side of winmo.
I wouldn't use the "ROM upgrade" mode in backup software for custom ROMs, that's mostly meant for official upgrades, with same provider customisations, etc. With custom ROMs it can be a mess, some will already have some programs/tweaks installed by default while others not, etc...
i flash a lot... task29 and Sashimi get me set up in 30minutes... ymmv

Data problems... possible ROM correlation?

Since May, I've been having this persistent issue with my data not connecting. At least 5-10 times a day, I will have to either reset my phone, attempt to connect the data several times, or turn the radio off & on to get it to connect to data. I have flashed several different radios, the most current one being the 2.12.50.02.2 radio, all to no avail. Things will be fine for a while, but invariably I will start getting connection errors again.
Then, after trying Android, I noticed something- I got ZERO data errors while running Android. Same data speeds, same radio, etc. But NO errors until I booted back to WM, which leads me to believe that my ROM is the problem. I'm using the stock T-Mo 2.10 ROM, simply because I find it to be stable, quick, and perfect for my use(2.13 sucks). But it is apparently the cause of the data errors, so I'm going to flash something else tomorrow & see what happens. I'm not ready to make Android my full-time OS yet, not until it's perfected, so I'm gonna try the VBN ROM first since it's supposed to be good on battery.
Just thought I'd post, just to see if anyone else has noticed this.
P.S. can anyone recommend a good total backup program that can back up all my settings & reg edits & whatnot? I've tried Sashimi but it always crashes out when I try to backup my registry & settings.
