This is the victim. It was in very rough condition, bought from the Marketplace. Scratches all over, some very deep. I've never seen a more abused N1 that still works perfectly. At least, it had a fresh new digitizer!

I took it apart and wet-sanded the frame down with old sandpaper that I've had for years from previous projects. I sanded in 3 stages, from more grit to less. Actual grit of the sandpaper won't really help anyone as it was very old and worn and much more fine than the numbers on the back stated. It actually looked pretty cool with a satin, sanded finish. It almost looked like brushed aluminum.
It may have looked nice even if I'd left it like that, but I was determined to polish it. Polishing was super easy and quick with a Miracle Polishing Cloth. I see one can buy it from here: http://www.amazon.com/Miracle-All-Purpose-Polishing-Cloth/dp/B001CXPKZO However, I already had one for free that some eBay seller threw in as a freebie with something I bought many years ago. Finally found a use for that polishing cloth that sat in my drawer for years. Entire process took 2 evenings, maybe 2-3hrs total time, most of it being sanding that anodizing off. Anodizing is very, very tough.
Something had to be done about the back covers as they were really beat up and badly pitted from having been dropped on concrete. I scraped off the rubber coating on the back covers with a pocket knife, then used some very old JB Weld epoxy as a filler and sanded smooth, that's what those light gray spots are.
I originally wanted to replicate the original rubber coating in black, but it doesn't seem possible. I thought about Plastidip, but it comes out thick and textured which I thought looked ugly. So I masked and painted gloss black with a few coats of clearcoat. Dust kept settling into the wet paint, so I had to wetsand it smooth. Many times I'd accidentally sand through the clearcoat or both clearcoat and basecoat. The paint is enamel and requires 7-days to cure before another coat can be sprayed on to fix my oversanded spots, so that's why this project took so long.
Anyway, the finished product. The previous pitting in the aluminum is now smooth and much less obvious and many of the scratches disappeared while sanding. Oh, I also sanded the power button down to black and painted volume buttons with "chrome aluminum" spray paint.
A few comparison pics, stock vs polished.
I like it, I think HTC should have made polished an option as a Special Edition phone or something. It looks a lot better in person, pics make it look a bit flat. Total cost of mod: $0.
looks nice bro
It looks like 3GS Good job! (but I like the original - I don't like shiny things )

Kind of iPhone 3GSish from the back, but extremely good looking from the front.

Very nice man, they should so have offered it as an option.
nicely done!
but I'd rather like it with the matt finish
Pretty cool! Personal taste of mine would have left it looking brushed. Good Job! Looks brand spankin' New compared to the before pics!
Really like the polished look...awesome! thanks for the b/a pics.
You guys gotta remember the original owner was the abuser of the phone. This person took it in as his own children and gave it new legs and arms (LOL). Looks nice man! Good job getting rid of all the dents.
I don't know what your ppl talking about. This use nice. Bling Bling. But settle. I like it. Job well done.
Its the special edition. One of a kind.

It's not dirty, I even soaked the ball in bleach for a week! It's just a dark color for some reason. I didn't think the dark ball looks too bad with the black and "chrome" theme though.
Looks amazing I really love having unique things and having a chrome N1 puts it on a whole different level.
Great job & awesome transformation. I wish I have the guts to do the same job with my N1.
man, did that phone fall off a train or something? after a year my N1 looks new, poor thing!
I'm not a big fan of shiny paint but the chrome look is great. Also, the thing was really beaten up and you can't see that anymore, great job
You did an amazing job on this tortured Nexus One, props for that
nice job indeed

****UPDATE*******
Been thinking about making them for people.
front £12.55
back £4.59
Paint £5
labour £5
designs £10
and if you wanted a design I will be using a qualified fine artist. She is painting two cases now so will post them when she is done.
The front case doesn't come with a digitizer so the area around that will look fine.
*****/update*****
I have owned the Hero since it came out on orange in the UK, but I hate the grey colour so I'm making it nicer.
I have 4 backs to the phone so all will be different designs. Also I will be using the black grill cover for call speaker, black volume/menu buttons from the T-mobile G2.
As I think black will suit the blue better.
All paints are car paints from Halfords.
I started on day one with sanding down the phone then applying a primer(base layer)

Day two
I applied the blue colour
Day three
Went really well sanded down and put the primer on the other backs.
Applied the lacquer, so will be able to rebuild phone tommorow.
The yellow back is halford glow in the dark paint. I do not recommend playing with this(yes it glows like mad) it is really thin. It took 6 layers just to get what you see in the photo.
Day four rebuilding the phone.
Phone rebuild only had one little hic-up. when I put the black grill on the in call speaker didn't put it right so was very quite. Corrected now.
phone is working fine no dust under the screen. looks well smooth.
things I would change.
I would take the digitizer out fully not just use low tack tape.
put all casing on match sticks to get a smoother look on the corners.
apart from that I'm well impressed with my first try at painting. ( didn't even do art in school)
Lots of photos including the glow in the dark case.
Any questions post here or tweet me T- iammodo
Nice work Could you show us a picture of how the finished paint job looks?
wow looks cool
man, crazy idea but if it works it'd be amazing
updated the photos for day three
wont your screen and lcd be filled with loads of smudges and dust when you fix it up all back?cos thats what happened when i did a glass and digitiser swap on a iphone 3g..seems like it works the same way on the hero..dirt and grime is a turn off on the iphone 3g once screen is replaced,so thats why now im on a hero.anyways..nice job!!

Haha, do you think you only get constructive comments?
It's not only the colors that are ugly... I mean, that's taste really. You have none, but that's not the point here. It looks really bad... I mean, the part between screen and case. The Hero is such a beautiful device and this just looks cheap after the paint job.

See the part about the bit around the screen that's constructive well done.
This is why I said next time I will be taking the digitizer out fully.
I will be staining this area black on this case to make it look nicer.
Why would you say I have no taste that's just not very nice and the sort of thing that is bringing down internet forums. I love the colour blue as you can see it even matches my nail varnish.

Comments like this are a violation of site policy. If you don't like what he did, keep it to yourself. Be respectful of other members, very simple.
not much of a fan of the colour choice,i thought the white of the primer was canny , but good work on the painting! did you wet and dry sand it in between?
Love the colour! Arden blue is the best! The back looks really well done but the front not so much, but probably - as you said - due to working with the digitizer still in; pop it in the oven for 7 minutes @ 60C and it'll come out no problem.
And I was wondering, where did you get the black volume rocker from? I recently swapped my white case for a black unbranded one, but it didnt include the volume rocker and having a really hard time finding one.
Well done for first attempt tho, if you can get the front looking as good as the back then your onto a winner!
I get all my parts from work, not a shop or website sorry.
I will be buying a new front case from work to get a smoother look.
Also maybe this week i will be repainting this case to look better.
sorry i agree with him.Paint job isnt particularly great, you can see alot of wonky bits.Way to ruin a $500 phone imho Great job
Constructive criticism and ideas:
- I don't like the color choices. Most Hero owners would prefer more conservative colors like black, silver, white, gunmetal (dark grey). Try it in these.
- Paint job is very sloppy. I didn't read the entire post but if you're putting tape on it or whatever you're doing while you paint it, do a better job so it looks cleaner/neater.
the glow in the dark back cover is cool..looks rather ghastly..like slimy from ghostbusters...hahaha...that i would put on my hero when bored..but i wouldnt paint the whole phone though..anyways,good job..
I wasn't happy with my HD2, so I decided to polish the battery cover. I wrote a tutorial in case anyone is interested in doing the same to their device.

Wow. The only flaw is the deep scratches you pointed out.
The result is really astonishing. It fascinates me indeed, and now it looks like the phone a Harley rider would proudly use. Not that I own a harley, that I wish I did

make the job easier anyway?
Now, if only I could bring myself to do it for real, that's a sure warranty void for you.
BTW, how much did the cover become thinner after you polished it? Does it lose much thickness or is it less resistant in any way?
Thats just amazing, a total new look..
omg awsome! the paint is already away on my cover.. already posted this some months ago, when there were big dots where the painting was away.. it looked very ugly, so i thought i should scratch everything away xD did it, and it looks better now.. now i see this^.^ i think im going to do this, it looks amazing
Ouch, Scotch Brite? I'd recommend using 400, 600, 800, 1000, 1200 grain sandpaper. I use them for lapping my CPU's and heatsinks. It looks flawless if you do it properly.
got one important question.. does it maybe rust after some time? im using my phone very much in the rain.. and maybe an important coating is away after the sanding? :3
since the back cover is made out of alu, it shouldn't rust. i cleaned the coating / paint off of mine too.

The Metal Polish Creme leaves a thin layer of Silicon on the metal when you are done, which does an excellent job of protecting the surface from break down.
The only thickness you loose is really the painted layer, Not sure if it would void my warranty as I didn't really have to take the phone apart to do this. To the manufacturer its no different than some scratches on the screen, so I think the warranty would still be in tact. Also if you do yours be very careful using a dremel tool, its pretty easy to ruin a phone with a dremel. I learned this the hard way about 4 phones ago.

that's the problem, 14usd for a piece of metal is too expensive imo, or I would've bought one already to drill couple holes for a lanyard in there
awesome idea!
the paint is peeling off on my battery cover (only in one place), and i was thinking about getting it plated or something....your idea is much better, tho a bit difficult to do by oneself
Hello, all. I have seen this on a few other sites but I couldn't find it here, and if it has been posted here then I apologize in advance but please know that I don't take credit for this idea, I just wanted to share my modification and post instructions on how I did it because I honestly believe it came out perfect!
To achieve what you see in the pictures below, all you need is some 400 grit sandpaper, some compressed air duster, and some patience. Also, make sure you have a case opener tool and a T-5 torx bit to take the phone apart. Once you get everything separated, just go to work on the black paint with the sandpaper. I used 1x1 inch squares that I cutout from a large sheet; it only took five squares to complete this. Just be patient and use a pen or similar small tube to wrap the sandpaper around to get into the curved areas with ease. Take your time, it is well worth the wait. Once you are all done, take a fresh piece of sandpaper and go over the whole thing quickly one last time, then with a slightly damp cotton cloth wipe away the dust to get that deep red color back and use the air duster to remove the particles. Put everything back together and enjoy!!! The look is totally clean and smooth and so damn sexy! I am going back to my clear case from my otter box just to show it off. I don't think I left anything out but just post any questions and I'll get right back to you.
Once again, thanks to everyone who did this before be and gave me the inspiration. I really think this is the best way to go about it...no chemicals, no razors or blades, no dremel tools. Just some up close and personal TLC with some really really fine sandpaper.
Good luck and post some photos of your results!!!

Wow that looks awesome!!!! I'm going to buy sandpaper tomorrow.
Don't forget to post pictures of your results! I can't stress enough, take your time and it will be worth it. It took me about 90 minutes to get it all done but I am very OCD when it comes to my gadgets lol. Your time may vary, but stick with it and go slow! Thanks for the kudos!!!
Looks really good, but im afraid about my warrenty, I dont think the sprint store would believe me saying it was a EVO LE or something like that.
Nice, would probably look sexy with my carbon fiber phantom skinz, but alas, I'd probably get bored of it after a week. Enjoy you custom EVO.
VERY nice!!! I'll have to do this to my EVO. Thanks
I wouldnt want to lose my warranty over this. Just make sure you replace the warranty tape that goes over the torx screw and they will never be able to prove anything. Just tell them it came like that lol
Will try this soon but im kinda scared but looks good but do you get any cratches on the phone???
If you didn't take the phone apart I would think scratches on the rest of the phone would be impossible to avoid, but when you take the phone apart and are holding only the red frame in your hand while sanding then the rest of the phone isn't affected whatsoever and as you can see in the pictures there are no scratches left on the red part afterwards. On the advice of another XDA member, I am actually going to go over the whole thing once with some 1000 grit sandpaper just to see how, if any, the look improves. But as it stands now, using the 400 grit sandpaper doesn't leave any marks and it looks great!
Has anyone done the white one?
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
Umm there are a ton of people here on xda who have done this already...there is a huge thread about it in the general section. Mine has this look too. But it looks good!
sent from my DAMN EVO!
Red scratch mod looks super sexy.
Unfortunately, it's completely irrelevant to me.
I cannot use the phone without a case, since the camera lens is easily scratchable. At the same time, no one has come up with a battery door design, which is as thin and nice looking as the stock, yet has a raised lip to protect the camera (clear battery is kinda pos from pictures).
Success100...I searched a bunch on different times using different keywords but couldn't find it...can you link it here, sir?
i love the look from this mod. i did it as was suggested in the first thread that popped up...scraping the paint off with a razor blade. i did it over a period of a few days to take my time...still, there are marks if you look really closely.
so now i'm going to try taking it apart and doing the sanding. my dad swears to make it smooth i need to get 2000 grit wet sand paper...that sounds high compared to what i've read on here (i know nothing of sand paper and sanding!)
anyone wet sanded theirs and had a good outcome?
can you share the info on how to take it apart without breaking the plastic? (always my concern)
thanks
As it turns out, I took the advice of that other member and did wet sanded mine again today using 1000 grit Wet/Dry paper and it came out amazing! I am sure that 2000 grit will do just as well.
My advice is just to wet the tip of your finger a few times and just rub it around the rim of the plastic and use the same amount on a little 1x1 inch square of the sandpaper. Then just keep working it until you get what you want. I was already so excited with the outcome of the 400 grit because there really weren't scratch marks or anything, and then the 1000 grit just kicked ass!
As far as the plastic cracking concern, once you remove the torx screws, with the innards of the Evo facing you, start the case separation in the lower right corner and go up from there. It isn't that much force needed to separate the case so don't worry too much, sir!
POST PICS!!! lol...good luck and enjoy
Good work!
i cant stress enough using the right paint on this project. You have to get a paint that bonds to the plastic well to prevent chips. also,
try to use the least amount of paint possible
high gloss paint will make your hand sweat
do research on paint used to mod xbox360 controllers. if the paint handles that it'll handle everything.
that RED evo looks sexy!!!
Indiana...there is no paint used for this modification, sir. We're just removing the black paint that is existing to reveal the red ABS plastic that is the actual molded color underneath. Even still, if you are going to paint any part of your Evo to modify the color, that is definitely good advice and I thank you for that as well as the compliment on how it looks, sir.

Thanks for your little walkthrough though, always nice to have multiple options and ways to try something.
I'm still personally too scared to try this.
I want to find a broken EVO for parts and practice or take apart and swap out the red plastic
So the clear coat on the battery cover to my phone was peeling so i decided to polish it

The best I can do is change oil and brake pads on a good day lol! I did just redo the gasket on my oil pan and it wasn't too bad plus changed one of my O2 sensors. That was a royal pain without the proper wrench.... anyways, sorry to ramble on good work! Might have to steal that idea. Ever think of doing the same to the phone bezel so it would match? basically wet sanded it with the sandpaper in the order described and used eagle one nano wheel polish.
Wow that looks like. Kind of too shiny for me but I know a lot of people that would love this though.
Word. I'm gonna hit mine up when I get paid and take to a metal engraving place that does zippos or trophies and whatnot. Will post some pics when I have the finished product. Not exactly sure what design or layout I'm gonna go with but its gonna combine the brushed finish and polished finish. 'Til next time.

I remember someone talked about engraving their battery cover but they either never did or never posted back about it. Sounds cool though. Let us know...

you should have finished it off with wetsanding with 4000 and then polished it with a rotating cloth and some oil (but not to intence, the oil can make the metal dark and ugly if u let it heat up too much from the friction)
i polished a piece of metal like that one time, made it clearer than my bathroom mirror
but still nice work

Sounds like a good idea. I might do but i was just using what i had on hand. Thanks for the tip
Hi everyone,
I was just about to buy a leather folio on ebay for my tablet when I decided to do a quick search for a TPU case just to be safe. And ONE hit came up. Looks like the seller 'tpdgear' is selling a tpu case on their page. The seller states it has limited quanities and is seeing how the product sells before having more made. I bought one myself and will give my opinion of it early next week when I receive it. I have been looking for one of these cases forever and now its finally here!! From the pictures, it looks like they have 'tpdgear' emblazoned on the back of the case (dunno if thats a turn-off for a lot of people).
Sorry, but the forum doesn't allow me to post outside links on the forum since I'm a new user. You can do a search for 'Acer A500 tpu' and it will give you a hit for user/seller 'tpdgear'
For those who don't know what TPU is, its an abbreviation for thermoplastic polyurethanes, the material the case is made of. Its more rigid in structure than your typical silicone, but softer and more flexible than the plastic hard cases. I have owned multiple cases made of these for my cell phones and i LOOOVE them. Just wanted to let you guys know for those that looking for them. I dread having to get one those bulky leather folios and have been using a netbook sleeve/case myself.
this one?

Yes, thanks godashram for posting it!!
You beat me to it. Just discovered it today, was going to post but saw this thread. Bought mine a few mins ago. I will post when i get it. Anyone else order one?
sure now they get one out there. literally just got my skinit skin in and put it on yesterday. Will tell you though, everyone thinks this skinit textured carbon fiber is real. It is the best fake carbon fiber i have seen yet

LOL..... I was going to do the same thing but will try the TPU cover first. Does the skin come with all that cut outs for the speakers a such? I assume so.
Hey, I've been looking for one of these for a while...good find! If possible, post some pics and let us know how well it fits and all. I'd like to know if it works before I pull the trigger and buy one. Thanks!
I got it! Came in today! Here are some pics:
The side where i am pulling back the case is softer than i like but it is protecting it very well. The cutt out for the lock right below is the one that isnt cut out very well but does not cover it. I will get more pics up when i get back.

Looks great! I've wanted one since I got my tablet. I just ordered mine today so I'll comment on the quality when I get it.
Yeah I was gonna wait until I got your review before ordering, but instant gratification won out. Mine is on the way. Glad it does truly look decent, so I didn't just waste 18 bucks. Thanks for the pics!
Just got mine about an hour ago. Other than the giant "TPDGEAR" across the back, I love it. I've been looking for something like this since the A500 came out.
Just got mine today! It fits well, and is a lot firmer than the usual silicone covers. My only complaint is the softness of the sides, top and bottom edges. I solved this with a few strategically placed bits of doubled sided scotch tape along the edges. Now when I pick it up by the edge, it doesn't pull away from the tablet. Overall a good little cover though.
just received mine yesterday. case fits like a glove and eliminates a lot of bulk compared to other sleeves, portfolios and cases. cut-outs for ports & speakers line up true and allow cables to be inserted with causing it to be loose. material is sturdy (its tpu) and came in a smoky color. like karlkarloff said, some people may find the edges to be a little too soft, but i personally didn't have a problem. there is 'TPDGear' etched in the back in big letters so that would be my only complaint. big thanks to razen_spec for posting pics!
So I've had mine for a week now and I really like it... I like the textured feel and the TPU material is very sturdy and has a tight fit. The only small issue I have is the logo. I would have rather had a cutout for the metallic Acer insignia.
I just bought one today. I can't wait to be rid of the HORRIBLE Acer case.
There's another one on ebay now. Same price, no annoying logo in the back!
Just bought it, I'll report back in 5-10 business days.
PS: just got my Acer yesterday (staples deal) and loving it so far.
i love this new table. had ipad1 and i found it best used for coffee toaster.
love the widgets, and the google browser.
ordered! Thanks

Damn, I like my TPD Gear case, but the one you found looks a little nicer. Looks like it wraps around the front of the screen a bit more so the siders won't flex out like they did(two sided tape took care of that) on my TPD one. And its black with no logo, I might have to get it and see if I can sell my other one.
How is the screen covered for travel?
Thanks for posting this case. I just the Iconia for the hubs' b-day this week, and haven't decided on a case yet. We just got a zipper neoprene case%for it (cannot beat five bucks!)
