Chrome HTC HD2 Battery Cover Tutorial - HD2 General

I wasn't happy with my HD2, so I decided to polish the battery cover. I wrote a tutorial in case anyone is interested in doing the same to their device.
blog.whitesites.com/Chrome-HTC-HD2-Battery-Cover-Tutorial__634103488469591250_blog.htm

Looks great and can double as a portrait mirror.

Wow. The only flaw is the deep scratches you pointed out.

The result is really astonishing. It fascinates me indeed, and now it looks like the phone a Harley rider would proudly use. Not that I own a harley, that I wish I did
Wouldn't using one of these

make the job easier anyway?
Now, if only I could bring myself to do it for real, that's a sure warranty void for you.
BTW, how much did the cover become thinner after you polished it? Does it lose much thickness or is it less resistant in any way?

Thats just amazing, a total new look..

omg awsome! the paint is already away on my cover.. already posted this some months ago, when there were big dots where the painting was away.. it looked very ugly, so i thought i should scratch everything away xD did it, and it looks better now.. now i see this^.^ i think im going to do this, it looks amazing

Ouch, Scotch Brite? I'd recommend using 400, 600, 800, 1000, 1200 grain sandpaper. I use them for lapping my CPU's and heatsinks. It looks flawless if you do it properly.

got one important question.. does it maybe rust after some time? im using my phone very much in the rain.. and maybe an important coating is away after the sanding? :3

since the back cover is made out of alu, it shouldn't rust. i cleaned the coating / paint off of mine too.

hmm, so lets just do it xD ty^.^

It does look good, but somehow also out of place with the rest of the phone.

The Metal Polish Creme leaves a thin layer of Silicon on the metal when you are done, which does an excellent job of protecting the surface from break down.

The only thickness you loose is really the painted layer, Not sure if it would void my warranty as I didn't really have to take the phone apart to do this. To the manufacturer its no different than some scratches on the screen, so I think the warranty would still be in tact. Also if you do yours be very careful using a dremel tool, its pretty easy to ruin a phone with a dremel. I learned this the hard way about 4 phones ago.

I agree with you. If you wanted to do it right you have to use many grades of sand paper. I was using just what I had laying around the house.

regarding the warranty, I plainly asked htc support for their opinion about this.
The idea of having a mirror battery cover tingles my fantasy

never crossed my mind... must look good. I simply covered mine with suede and haven't looked back.

awsome, than u =D will do it as soon i have the sand paper, the creme and some time xD

You can also buy an new orginal cover so why the warranty would be broken:S
On ebay you can get one for $14 you can also buy one of the to try.

that's the problem, 14usd for a piece of metal is too expensive imo, or I would've bought one already to drill couple holes for a lanyard in there

awesome idea!
the paint is peeling off on my battery cover (only in one place), and i was thinking about getting it plated or something....your idea is much better, tho a bit difficult to do by oneself

Whats the easiet was to fix this? The phone still works and so does the touch screen
Happened when i was taking the phone out of my pocket and it slipped. Fell on concrete.
Horrible mate
It should be covered under warranty. Check with whoever you got it from.
dont think "droppage" is covered under warranty.
This is why I have never paid for a phone (contract) but have always insured my phones.
I grip my l'il ol HD2 pretty tight these days.

Just rang the htc repair centre. they gonna pick it up tomiorrow and gimme a quote. fingers crossed.
What do you guys reckon? less or more then 150 quid?
Dunno how much itll cost but just use your master card thats in the second pic!
oh no! not another one! 2 in 2 days now. think i`l be using gaffer tape to secure it to my hand from now on! lol.. these phones seem fairly easy to brake, like they disintigrate when they hit the floor. the amount of times i dropped my topaz, these dont survive even one drop do they.. scary!
Bummer! You know that is why I use this. Really smart protection. Up to now, not a single problem with the screen! (fingers crossed)
No really, I know from past experiences how you feel. Good luck.
I heard it costs around 240+ euros. Not sure tho..
Buy a replacement screen off of eBay! 50euros and you'll repair your device
I totaly agree. It really is scary. My old touch pro was really friendly with floor after meeting it several times xD but HD2 just hate floor, doesnt it?
AMEX (B or P) .... Extended Warrenty???
AMEX (B or P) .... Extended Warrenty???
Most phones will look aesthetically rubbish after they've been introduced to concrete but few will actually break. It's a shame but obviously one of the pitfalls of having a glass screen. Surely this would happen to the iPhone etc too? The HD2 has a bigger screen so obviously the chances of breakage must increase too. The moral of this story? Don't buy a glass-fronted handset if you are a poor juggler!
This kind of rubber cover could save you
I highly recommend getting a resin soft case off ebay. it protects from scratches, fingerprints, it's movable and yet hard/fitting. It'll protect from a drop too, then again cases only take so much of a drop...

A little too shiny for my taste, but it still looks great.

Looks like you could bounce a laser off that one. Yeah, too shiny for me. It is also kind of a fingerprint/smudge magnet. Nice work though.
It looks great! Personally I wouldn't do it to mine right now. The ipods have a shiny back like that too and it lives finger orbits and scratches.
If my backing starts to look bad I may do this. How did you do it?

You must work at a body shop or on cars as a hobby. That just screams it to me. I have plenty of gearhead friends that do the same type of thing. Nice work btw! The best I can do is change oil and brake pads on a good day lol! I did just redo the gasket on my oil pan and it wasn't too bad plus changed one of my O2 sensors. That was a royal pain without the proper wrench.... anyways, sorry to ramble on good work! Might have to steal that idea. Ever think of doing the same to the phone bezel so it would match? You'd have to be EXTREMELY careful though.

How did you do it? Did you use automobile metal polish? Do you know what type of metal its made out of? I was thinking about doing this a little while back and forgot about it. And I also want to etch some custom art into it as well. Make it more personalized
I would also like to do the trim piece but it would be tricky to do it without touching anything else, and I don't see myself taking it off.

That is straight G bro. I'm going to do that too because the clown that I got the phone from surface scrated the hell out of the back. I do keep a velcro patch on the back so I can stick it the my center consel it keeps it from getting sratched anymore too.

basically wet sanded it with the sandpaper in the order described and used eagle one nano wheel polish.
Wow that looks like. Kind of too shiny for me but I know a lot of people that would love this though.
Word. I'm gonna hit mine up when I get paid and take to a metal engraving place that does zippos or trophies and whatnot. Will post some pics when I have the finished product. you should have finished it off with wetsanding with 4000 and then polished it with a rotating cloth and some oil (but not to intence, the oil can make the metal dark and ugly if u let it heat up too much from the friction)
i polished a piece of metal like that one time, made it clearer than my bathroom mirror
but still nice work

Atrix Paint Job

hey everyone. i wanted to do this after i chipped a piece of the finish off of my battery cover. so here it goes
INSTRUCTIONS
1) (OPTIONAL) get a coin or something and carefully scrape the logos off of your phone.
2) get an x-acto knife and some contact paper and whatever picture you want on your phone
3) i used a piece of cardboard to cut on. (a cutting mat would be better). tape down your picure. and tape a piece of contact paper over it (make sure the contact paper is bigger then your phone)
4) carefully cut out the image you want.
5) when you are done, peal off the sticky side, take the battery cover off of your phone and stick the contact paper to it.
6) make sure you have spray paint that is friendly with plastics or just a good multi surface spray will do. (thats what i used) and here is where i went wrong so read carefully. the atrix is a glossy phone. so to start shake the paint really well. also you should do 2-3 thin layers of paint. i did 1 slightly thick layer becuase a thin layer didnt cover the whole thing. (it was late, i was excited and i was inpatient(DONT BE LIKE ME ))
when i say layer. spray it on. wait a little while then do it again. im not a painter or an artist so im not the best at this stuff.
anyways.
7) let it dry to the point that its not runny but before its fully dry remove the contact paper so you dont take the paint off with it.
let it sit for as long as your spray paint takes to dry. and enjoy
side notes.
i used 2 dots of sticky tack to mask out the eyes because i couldnt cut out a pen tip sized piece of contact paper. the sticky tack reacted with the paint and became really soft and hard to remove. even hrs later. so. only uses that if its your only option. it does work though.
also... i used uv reactant paint. it lights up nicely under black lights
everything used for this mod cost about $12
if anyone has any questions ill be happy to help to the best of my abilities
Picture take with acer iconia a500 running android 3.2

I am kinda scared to paint mine so far, since it's nearly new. but if i get the back scratches, it's certainly an interesting route to take.

i used contact paper because it a great material to cut stencils/masks out of. it sticks to the surface. closes all gaps. and comes off clean. plus you can cut it to almost any size and it doesnt tear easily.

SII Cracked screen

Well, my screen is cracked, and im kinda pissed....The phone was in a case with the ''gorilla glass" facing my lap, then a friend of mine pushed me into a pole softly and crack, a massive crack, dead pixels, unresponsive screen, and now after a nights sleep the whole screen is blue and you can barely see that its on...

Maybe yours is. I have it now for 3 months. No protection, always in the pocket or on the table or wherever, but no scratch. Quite different from my previous Omnia 2, with a few big scratches after 2 weeks. Perhaps a diamond screen would be good for you.

What sort of pole were you pushed into?
If the pressure was dissipated over the whole screen surface - i.e., trapped between pole and your thigh - it'd seem to be the optimal condition to crack it, unfortunately.
My wife broke a PMP with Gorilla glass by sitting on an office chair with PMP in pocket... and her ass ain't big.

Official Bumper Thoughts?

Anyone that got the bumpers from the Play Store, can you share your thoughts, please?
I couldn't get one and want to know if it would be worth it to get one whenever stock comes in. Thanks.
I Love 2PAC
I have recieved my Bumper, but not the phone itself, because it was sold out, I wanted to get the case just to get THAT much closer to the N4.
It's made of some high quality metal, i'm guessing Aluminium. It's pretty light, at only 20g, it should be able to resist most drops and scratches, but the shock might travel through the metal to the phone, so I don't know. We'll have to wait for a few drop tests on YouTube, cause there's not way I'm putting my N4 on the line.

No problem! but if you can please post some pictures it'll be much appreciated! Since google doesnt have any close ups.
I have no idea what good a bumper would do so I didn't purchase one. Instead, I bought screen protector for both front and back, and a PTU case.
If Google sold a case, I would be happy to buy one.

It shouldn't. If I remember my physics correctly, a magnetic field between the two coils should only occur inside, leaving no current to be induced anywhere else. Including a metallic bumper.

Ture, but while you are trying to position the phone on the mat, a current might be induced in the bumper if it is made of metal.
It can't be all metal because you won't be able to put it on, all metal bumpers consist of two parts and screw to each other.
Pictures plz
I think its rubber in the inside with a metal(ish) ring around the outside. I don't have mine yet but from googles pics that is what it looks like.

I wish google's official pictures show how the bumper looks like when it's actually on the phone... . That was one of the reasons I didn't buy it when it was first available.
