[Q] kernel check-up - what are you using and why? - Vibrant General

I've been flip-flopping between the venerable overstock 1.x and 2.x versions (with trigger) for a couple of months, but I've seen some promising buzz for a few other kernels in the last few weeks.
I'm big on battery life; but speed/smoothness, voodoo, bln, and other nice features are also important to me. Bali sounds promising...
Anyone care to share their experience with and reasoning for their current favorites?

Overstock simply because it runs great and I've never had any issues. Don't care to try any others

I'm using Tigers Blood for a little over a month now with Trigger 3. I like it, OC'd to 1.2 and tweaked voltage. The battery is a pretty happy medium for my use
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA Premium App

Bali most definitely. I'm running 1.8.4 with Bi-Winning and routinely get 35-40+ hours with my normal moderate use.
Edit: Let me correct that. With Bali 1.8.3 that's what I was getting. Still reconditioning the battery since I updated to 1.8.4...

Lookin for build/kernal with best battery

Performance doesnt matter.
2.2 or 2.1 doesnt matter.
Just something thats 100% stable with good battery.
I read that bionix final with ji2 radio is good. Right now im on rooted stock ji6
Any suggestions?

For me the leak froyo from enugene in odin format gave me the best battery. 2 days of light ussage didnt need a charger when i do 30 hrs calls and still have some left

If you like touch wiz, bionix final.
If you don't like touch wiz, bionix fusion 1.2.
You can use their core v3 kernel for both of these. Best battery life I've had by far.

1200 mhz on galaxy s. Safe?

Im wondering if anybody can attest to the stability and reliability as well as safety concerns with running a galaxy s phonew at 1200 mhz. I see a lot oflash kernels boasting this overclock. Thanks in advance

Flash and find out. If it doesn't freeze, your good. Some phones can't handle the oc. There's really no grey area, it will either be stable, or it won't. 1.2 is the standard, and is probably the safest. I'm at 1.48 and stable.

I'm mainly concerned for overheating as I've cooked a couple pc processors
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA Premium App
Use setCPU and set up a temperature profile. I have mine set so when the phone hits 120 F, the processor scales down to stock clock speed and cools off.

U will not have any heat issues unless ur charging ur phone. When u charge a galaxy s phone ur gets very warm including in stock speeds
Definitely. The Infuse 4G has the same hummingbird chip overclocked to 1.2 ghz by default, so it should run with no issues. I can doing 1.3 ghz with no problem. Can't hit 1.4 though.
Sucks since my last phone could handle 1.6 ghz (through a custom 1.6 ghz DOW kernel, thanks Morific!).
It is safe but you lose battery life so that didn't work for me but it is safe and no overheating issues
Dunno what Kernel i used but it was by Morific, and was discontinued for being unstable, but my phone has been able to go up to 1.4, they tried a 1.6 but was far too unstable or something.

I think the Manhattan project messes with the environmental properties of the phone or something.

Yes, the Manhattan project was a dud since it never really overclocked the device. In fact it only slowed it down.
But I requested a 1.6 ghz version of the DOW kernel from Morific, just for fun. Surprisingly it worked well with my old device.

That depends on the phone a lot. I know lots of people who use 1200 but I did with Overstock and Tigers Blood and my phone would freeze. Also use set cpu for the same side to keep an eye on temp.

I've had no problems oc'in, but it really does depend on your chip. Been running mine at 1420 for a week, super stable never gone above 29c under load. IMO, just have to give it a shot and see how stable it is for you.
I'm using Bullet and have been getting great battery life even with it fully OC'd. About 20-25 hrs with moderate use.

With what rom??
Overclocked mine to 1.48 and been running stable for a few weeks now...

Rock mod vs 99 vs bcblend

All about the battery life has anyone tested these three kernels in detail.
Sent from my PG06100 using XDA Premium App
Because of the slight variance in hardware on the Shift its very much a YMMV situation. For example, everyone raved about bcnice's kernel how it gave huge gains battery life, but for me it gave me the worst battery life. Before Nightly #88 ScaryGhoul's kernel gave me the best battery life.
I'm using newest miui
Sent from my PG06100 using XDA Premium App
i like Rock mod did very well with battrey

I love galnet v5.2

But the battery drain isn't worth all the good things this rom has to offer. So sad to know I couldn't use my phone for long if this rom remained.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA Premium App
Ditto. I love MiUi but the battery drain makes it impossible to live with it.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
Its like having the fastest and best looking car but you only to drive it for 5 mins before buying more gas. I'm thinking of buying a battery pack just to get normal usage out of this rom. Its about 30% below where I'm usually at and I haven't been doing much.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA Premium App
Use the official miui build from MIUIAndroid.com. I lose 1% battery an hour on that rom.

Okay ill give this a shot and see how well it works.
I am using GalnetMIUI v6 and I don't have any battery drain. With some txts, calls , bit gaming and surfing I can get about 30+ hours of battery.

I can totally confirm this. Only thing i'm missing now on MIUI is my language, but as this rom is more than perfect compared to Samsung rom i will stay with this. I've got some random reboots in 24 hours i flashed this but it's still good!

Better battery life from the link posted above. Its more reasonable now.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA Premium App
Love this rom,but the battery drain is insane.Last tried rom was hawkish prem 3 with galaxian kernel, battery lasted over 3 days moderate using.
you can try my rom iVastROM 2.0.
i post it today.
it's very fast and the battery lasts much

Battery Life on CM7 (AOSP versus Sense)

I've been running the latest nightly (20120722) for a few days now with less than stellar battery life. It seems that everytime I run an AOSP rom the main battery culprits appear to be cell and phone idle, where's with a Sense rom, it' the screen. I have a relatively new battery. I'd say moderate use, typically.
Anyone have suggestions on getting better battery life with CM7? I'm running the stock kernel at 245/800, ondemand, deadline. Also running V6 supercharger at 5.
Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I've gotten 12+ hours today of cm7.2 7/15 nightly and barely at 50%
Did lots of recordings and such.
Dunno
I don't use the v6 script, or do any mods at all.
Just run it as is.
Stock battery too.

Yeah I've gone back to 7/15 to see if it's any better. I seem to remember it being better; I'll report back later today. Still curious why cell standby is the main battery eater on CM7 (or AOSP ROMs in general) as compared with say, SSX or newSENSE, which was the display...

Aosp shows true signal where Sense won't. So AOSP having a cell standy over display sounds about right. Sense always thinks it has signal and AOSP has no signal thanks to sprint. In my area Sprint blows, so that's what I *think

This is better.. I went back to the previous nightly (20120715) for a few days now. Still moderate use.
I'm currently running the stock kernel at 245/1.21, ondemand, deadline. Without V6 supercharger and I didn't flash the ICS theme either.
Perhaps the 20120722 nightly did not play well with my device.

If V6 SuperCharger is not setup correctly, or the setting is to high. Your Battery life can take a hit.
