Cyanogen vs. Everything Else! - Nexus S General

I am fairly knowledgeable when it comes to rooting and flashing roms. My Epic 4G had tons of custom rom's but I would hear about this Cyanogen group all the time. Now that I have an NS4G I have the ability of actually using it I have no clue what exactly it is? Is it a different way of rooting or is it a Rom? Once I dl the zip file what do I do with it?

Its a ROM. Wipe and flash like any other. Make sure you snag your Gapps (google apps) as well, as they are not included. There should be a DL link for it around with the ROM itself.

I tried the Cyanogen nightly build for NS4G and had everything worked except the status bar. It kept saying process.android.statusbar has stopped working. I went back to Gerbil Rom until Cyanogen starts building nightlies every night for our device. Seeing how there is only 1 build and it is a nightly build at that, it is expected for it to be buggy. Just remember when you are flashing a nightly build of CM7 it is basically an experimental build and there could be bugs. I flashed the nightly builds for my EVO 4g but most of the major bugs were worked out of that. I will be flashing the next nightly and the one after that until I find one stable enough to be a daily driver.

It's been a long time since there was an official build. I think I will share my build for now until the build infra is running again.
Do NOT report any issue in the main CM nightly thread. You have been warned!
You can however report issues here, and pray somebody will listen to them.

Again, you have been warned!
FAQ
Q. What does the test folder mean?
A. It will be unofficial builds with additional commits from developers which are not yet approved to go into CM. There is probably a good reason why it didnt get merged yet, so you are warned!
Q. Is this build faster than latest nightly?
A. This build is fast, but probably not faster than latest nightly
Q. Is battery life better then latest nightly?
A. This build battery life is good, but probably not better than latest nightly
Q. What does updated WIFI driver do?
A. Nothing, I removed it.
Q. What has been added/changed since last build?
A. Check Changelog for latest changes.
Q. Can i flash this over my currently nightly?
A. Yes you can flash this over a nightly just like you do with another nightly
Q. Where did the KANG go?
A. It got replaced by UNOFFICIAL to prevent misunderstanding.
Thanks a lot! I think this should become the place to share our Kang builds with the rest of the world.

Probably better to have 2 places, one to discus how to build a KANG, and one (this one) to discus posted KANGS. Both have different audiences, people who like to build and people who like to flash.

Hi, what are the differences between this and a cm7 nightly?
Can I flash this over nightly 181?
Thanks in advance
It is updated until the 8th of December. Safe to flash over 181, just another update plus an addon as stated in the op (updated wifi driver from zach).
Basically it contains almost all changes from the changelog for nightlies..
Taptalked u see
Ok thanks. I installed it, it works pretty well, but still has got a bug present in nightly 181... The fade effect when you unlock the lockscreen is not present. Could you try to fix it? Thanks!

It uses the same sources as CM7, and it uses the same build process.
The only thing different is the updated WIFI driver which zach and fugumod uses, and of course the recent changes which are not inside the latest nightly's.
So you can assume the following:
* This build is fast, but probably not faster than latest nightly 181
* This build battery life is good, but probably not better than latest nightly 181
* Maybe the WIFI signal could be better, but you will have to find that our yourself.
* Check Changelog for latest changes compared to latest nightly 181
* Yes you can flash this over a nightly just like you do with another nightly

[Q] Building Latest P.A.C Man Rom

Hello im new to android rom creation and i was looking to make a up to date p.a.c man rom since we have rc2 for cyanogenmod but i was wondering if there was anything special to know when trying to compile p.a.c? thank you for your help
Well, if you just want to compile PAC it's pretty easy. Setup your enviroment like any other build but during repo init, use Pac's github instead of Cyanogenmod's github.
If you want to take CM RC2 and Merge it with PAC to get the "latest", you'd have to setup with PAC and cherry pick CM changes.
There are other ways, but these are the only way I know.
is there any real advantage to doing that? i know cm10.1 rc2 has improvements but i would imagine that would only be using it as a base, im new to this so i dont see how other pac roms like the s3 rom has all of this up to date

I think all the other roms do not have CM10.1 rc2 as a base yet, it released not long ago, right? Perhaps there would be benefits, but very little. I'm not very sure as I've migrated away from CM.

My personal ROM before I switched to PA was based on AOSP. I found that cm had some issues with 240dpi and I couldn't fix it. I used AOSP and it was fine. It was harder to get started ( root and recovery stuff ) but after that it was firne.

[Q] Stable ROM for mako

Hello everyone,
I'm getting an N4 next week and I was wandering how stable AOKP's milestone 1 or CM RC2 are given that nither have a proper stable out yet.
Let me give some context. I use to be big on flashing, the phone I have now has run every any anying I have been able to find but to be honest I'm sort fo bored of it. At this point I'm just looking for somethig I can flash and wait for the OTA update for the next point or big number realse and Yes I know that both roms mention above are not "stable" but they will be soon I hope. I can put up with annoynces for some time while the stable comes out so I can move up to it. Also I'm open for sugestion if there anything more solid then AKOP or CM(if that is even plosible) by all means shear
They're both pretty stable. All features are fully working. Both roms have been on the Nexus 4 scene since day one so the developers have worked hard to eliminate any bugs. Just flash one and try it out yourself.

CyanogenMod RC2, being a release candidate, is very stable and bug free (from my experience).

that is awsome news that there really stable. I'm confuse, why then are they not mark as stable? Can they be using debian definiton of stable?

Probably the developer doesn't think it's ready. Either way, it seems stable enough for daily use.

I've used cm10.1 and switched to Xylon when I had the desire for more customization. Ever since JellyBeer started however it's been my main ROM and I absolutely love the functionality and stability it has to offer. I am intrigued by PA's Halo though.

I always wanted PA on my phone now I've got it. Couldn't ask for anything more just waiting for the rest of the features to be added by PA.
Glad you are here with us!!! :good:
You got official PA
FYI...
Serranolte and Serrano3g have been added to aospa-legacy, meaning you will be getting official builds from now on and can use the OTA app to update.
https://github.com/AOSPA-legacy/android_vendor_pa/commit/99120361c36189be4170e202b2adfe9657671158
Downloads will be available at this link when they are ready. Serranoltexx and Serrano3gxx folders would show up when the build is ready.
Hey dude. I'm not sure if you got my PM, UC Browser does funny stuff sometimes so I will post this here.
Just woke up a couple of hours ago. Testing AOKP now, everything seems to be working fine. At first it appeared that Bluetooth didn't work. After a reboot and installing gapps it seemed to be working. Not sure if that was due to gapps or just the reboot. Other then that everything seems to be fine.
P.S. I also tried Mahdi, excellent ROM, can confirm Bluetooth is not working there either, plus the gallery app crashed from the get go until a reboot
Pure AOSP gives issues sometimes. Will take a look when I update. Thanks for testing. I'll create a new thread when I get feedback for the LTE version.

ha ?! strange ...
Pure AOSP (like Nexus roms ) are généraly more stable than CM roms ..."in théory" .
And it will be perfect for users who want the simplicity on parameters, a pure google experience (like stock ) ...and a good "clean" base ( without "frills" ) for eventualy to personalize oneself for some people .
And for some people who like Touchwiz :add very goods Samsung Touchwiz theme + launcher will be great ! ==> it fully replace stock rom!
It's sure that when stock KK will be released for S4 mini by Samsung, with the code-source ( scheduled in May 2014...according to the "good" rumors enought reliable ) ==> a pure AOSP build will be the best choise for our phone ( lighten, performance and stability ) ....with a very good Customised Kernel for better phone ( a strong battery save ,without decreasing performance )
As far as i'm concerned ,i personaly wait this way for the future of my phone !
Otherwise ,there are stable CM11 ... but cyanogenmod have done many additional features on her rom .

Reflashing stock over custom ROMs

This is probably a dumb question..
But is it possible to flash the system.img from stock over a CM 13 rom and keep user data? Or a combination of the various IMG files?
I'm just having a lot of instability issues with the nightlies and don't want to have to download the 35gb of music again now that I'm on 2mbs internet :crying:
I had gone completely stock including relocking boot loader - agree - non stock ROMS are less stable.

Appears I may have found the answer in this excellent guide:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-6p/general/guides-how-to-guides-beginners-t3206928
I am wondering if anyone can confirm if Google Music would still have all it's downloaded music? Or would flashing write over that, as they are protected/hidden/encrypted files?
Best guess
Going back stock will make it factory fresh
I.e. Bye bye downloads

You're probably right. I'm just a little surprised that the Redmi Note 3's unoffical version of CM 13 was 10x more stable than the unlocked Google Nexus phone. Not blaming anyone or thinking I am owed anything. I just assumed since it ran so well on the RN3 that it should be near perfect on the N6P.
Any ROMS you reccomend that? Any reason not to just go stock+root+xposed?

AFAIK last CM snapshot (release) for 6p was in April.
If you want a stable ROM for 6p, choose one that is based on AOSP and not to heavily modified.
I've been using Pure Nexus ROM for awhile now and I find it very stable, if you find a bug and report it correctly, the dev is sure to try his best to fix it.
He also releases an update every month at least to include the security patches.
Stock ROMs can have bugs too and sometimes fixed in custom ROMs, they're usually more optimized too
+1 for pure nexus rom and xposed
