Hi Guys,
today I orderd my Nook Color and i am really excited. In Fact iam not interest into the reading functions, i just want to ust it as an Android Tablet.
Furthermore i am from Germany, so i believe iam unable to get an account, right?. I read the following on nookdevs:
"Before rooting, you need to complete BN's registration process, you will not be able to link your NC to your BN account to buy books after rooting. Do Not Proceed with Rooting unless the Nook is Registered, You will not be prompted to register with BN once you have completed the Root Process.
I believe i dont need an B&N Account at last, don't i? Or is there something i am missing?
Greetings from Germany
If you don't ever want it as a e-reader, possibly. I'm curious myself.
Since you can run Clockwork Recovery from an SD card and install alternative ROMs that way I would think that you won't need to register.
However someone more experienced can voice her/his view.
I've always assumed that the main reason you were supposed to register before rooting was that you couldn't register after rooting, but that the only reason to register was to be able to access Barnes & Noble ebooks. If you can't access B&N (as evidently is the case overseas) or you don't care about being able to access their content then I don't think it would matter if you didn't register. Now, I know you can un-root to go back to stock but I don't know if in that un-rooted state you could then register a device.
I think you have to register to access the device stock. However if you plan to wipe the internal memory from day 1 like I did, I think it doesn't matter.

Right, let's delve right into this. Though I warn you, it's quite long.
I recently purchased a Nook Simple Touch in the hopes that, after rooting, I would be able to install the Amazon Kindle app.
Things have not gone according to plan.
I am by no means technically inept, I revel in subverting electrical devices into doing things in which they were never designed.
This is why it pains me to have to come here, asking for assistance.
What I Did:
I used TouchNooter 2.1.31 to root my Nook, which was at version 1.1. I followed the somewhat detailed instructions to the letter, and was happily greeted with the Android screen. "Huzzah!" I exclaimed in my exuberance, all was as it should be, my buttocks finally able to unclench itself.
I proceeded with the setup, when I came upon the choice of if I wanted Google to be able to find where I was located, and if they could have access to my Nook, I unchecked both options, even though the instructions recommended not to.
The setup seemed to proceed unhindered. I put in my Email, and I was shown the desktop. I then proceeded to open Youtube, and logged in.
This is probably where I made a mistake. instead of trying to sign into Gmail, I went straight to the market. It didn't work as I anticipated. So I shut the Nook down and chose to wait the recommended 24 hours.
After 24 hours, I returned to my Nook, and attempted to log into the Android Market. It Worked! Goody Gumdrops.
However, attempting to download anything resulted in a message first stating "Your app will now download" And after a few seconds, a notification would pop up, telling me the download has failed, and to try again.
I chose to give up, and instead try the Amazon App Store. It booted up fine, and everything seemed to work. However, upon attempting to download something, it would start, then immediately stop, without any trace of it happening.
Now I was pretty sure, the reason for all this, is I hadn't synced my Gmail account with my Youtube account. I went and attempted it, only to discover it would supersede my Yahoo account if I continued. I chose to make an entirely new account.
I then went back into Youtube to log into my new account, and after doing so, I was greeted my a 401 Loading Error. I exited the app. and was going to try again by clicking on the Youtube App. Only now it wouldn't show up."Fiddlesticks" I mumbled, what now?
I went back to the instructions, and found that the Youtube App can sometimes flake out for unknown reasons. So that's where I left off.
I figure the easiest route to fix this would be to re-root the Nook.
And that's where I could use a bit of help.
How you can help:
I'd like to know the easiest way to re-root a nook that ISN'T Bricked. If it's not too much trouble.
Can I just use the menu inside the nook to reset to factory settings?
Or should I use this method? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1289233
What do I do once It's fixed?
After I re-root it, I'm reading that, because it runs on Android 2.1, many apps no longer work, and older versions must be obtained.
It seems like I need the file ES File Explorer to be able to install these old apps, but how does one go about getting said file explorer on the Nook in the first place?
So if anyone would be so kind, as to take the time to not only read, but answer my questions, I would be eternally grateful.
If all you really want is the kindle app, I would suggest you root using 'tinynoot'. No Google apps or appstore, but you can download the Kindle for android app .apk and install it using EZ Installer, which you can get from the Amazon Marketplace. If you actually want to read email and install apps from the Google app store, you will need to use an different method however.
I beg of you: do a reset to stock and back up your device using noogie if you have not already got a bog-standard, unmodified state backup of your device. Your backup should be ~2gig in size, and a really careful person test-fires that backup on a 2-4 gig storage medium other than their NST to be sure they wind up with a disk that has 8 partitions on it once they restore.
This weekend, I decided to try manually updating my rooted glowworm to 1.2.0. I was more-or-less successful but still saw enough unusual things that I went ahead and did an image based restore. Time to backup and restore was less than 15 minutes all told. Time to **** around with manually copying in the files, rather longer
You can indeed use tinynoot which installs the Amazon appstore (much less complex than getting Play going) and I'd think that you could get Kindle installed via Amazon?
FWIW, the Kindle app on the Nook e-ink devices, ahem, fellates gangrenous goats.
I recommend using Calibre and the de-drm tools to manage your own DRM and open the possibility of migrating most or all of your Amazon library to any format you like.
I did root today and got couple of problems. For some reason Android Market search function not working. I am able to browse and install apps, but when I try search window, nothing happens.
Another more serious problem, when I have been exploring seetings meny, Nook has been reset with message - "There was a problem with authorization. Please wait while we reset your device". I undrestand reset was done by NB, but have no found any answer what I did wrong.
I did search internet for both questions but have not found any solution.
I have NOOK Simple Touch with GlowLight: 1.2.1. Root was done with Glownooter 1.12.25
I did search internet for both questions but have not found any solution.

Read this forum instead. Both answers are to be found on XDA.
- root using 'NookManager'
- use NTGAppsAttack to get market [google play]
- to search for apk's in the market you need to use 'youten.redo.searchmarket' apk
Read 'developers forum' before asking another question. I know it's a mess but 99% of all answers are there.
Regarding the unexpected reset.
Have you registered the device after 1 boot or have you rooted it before doing that?
I'd unregister my device, register it again and then change kernel and disable B&N apks to block communication between NST and B&N.
If it would not work i'd blame google play.

I did tryied to search, but found that you have to read all the threads instead to get answer. There was no specific topics.
I saw NookManager, but have not found pros and cons comparing with glownooter and decided try last one. Is there any feedback on ZeroLab Nooter zerolab.net
I registered my device before rooting. I erased previous owner info, registered myself, backed up, then applied root.
Feedback
After connecting Nook to PC and downloading few books on SD card in epub format, when disconnected from USB cable, I got back android screen that appeared before applying market fix, i.e. Android Welcome Screen skip Sign In etc..
Any ideas what happens?
The search issue is a known issue with the version of market being outdated (not Play Store).
The second issue can happen if you made a backup deregistered and then restored the backup. It happens when the authkeys on the nook become different than the ones on the BN server and so your nook is forcefully deregistered to fix any issues.
To All,
I recently moved on to an HD+ and I wish to give my original NC to a friend where it will serve primarily as an e-reader.
I have converted my NC to full Andorid 4.1.2 usage (no longer rooted or set up for dual booting).
I think what I need to do is the following:
1. Download the most recent/stable Cyanogenmod version of the software I am using.
2. Copy to NC and do a complete wipe before installation.
3. By doing a complete wipe, it will be necessary to create a Google sign in from scratch for the new user (in place of my established Google id info). New owner does not have a Gmail account.
4. Once that all is done, the new owner will need to update account info for both Kindle and Nook apps.
Have I missed anything? Can a Google account be set up via desktop beforehand?
Thanks for any help with this.

You need to do an erase and de-register with stock so that your device is taken off the B&N server as registered to you. They track devices by serial number so it is important to get it released from you.
And yes the new user needs to sign up with Google. They can do it via desktop. Just have them sign up for a Gmail account there.
And they will have to get kindle (Amazon) and nook (B&N) accounts if they want them too. They also can be set up on desktop.

Even if I have totally switched it over to CM 10.1 on eMMc?

Yes, if you originally registered it with B&N you need to release it from their server. It won't matter to the new user if you have put CM10 on it, but it will still be tied up with B&N if anyone ever wanted to put stock back on it in the future. They would not be able to register it since it is registered to you.

Thanks for the clarification.
It will not be returning to stock in this current dimension or time space continuium!
I rooted my Nook Simple Touch (1.21) with Nook Manager. Wifi works well in "Relaunch." However, I cannot access my B&N account with wifi to sync my books when I am in the B&N library. So, I am limited to side loading my B&N books. And, I can't shop for books on the B&N site since the wifi connection always fails. This is not a deal breaker, and I do like Nook Manager quite a bit.
However, I would be happy to learn of a work around or other solution. I wish I could post this on the NookManager thread but I don't have enough posts to ask there.

That's something I haven't seen. For me, it's not the baseline Nook Manager root that causes any problems, it was the
addition of the NTGAppAttack Google Market utilities module that broke my ability to use the B&N Store Wifi. In my case,
though, it would cause my Nook to crash repeatedly. I have yet to see a situation like yours where the B&N Wifi or apps
fails to work (short of having disabled them using the NM utility, of course).
Did you somehow damage the partition on your nook that contains the serial/number, MAC, etc? I haven't seen that happen
yet, but I suppose it's possible, and that's the only thing I can think of that might break B&N Wifi without also preventing you
from even being able to run the B&N Library utility. Just guessing. Renata?
Hopefully you used the Noogie utility to do a full image backup of your Nook flash memory - if so, the partition is labeled(I
believe) ROM or rom. I hope you did a backup at least with Nook Manager, although I have found some failures that
are not resolved using the NM restore function. Only a full image restore using a Noogie-acquired image backup will
get you back from any and all corruption of your Nook flash memory.

Thanks for your reply. I am a rooting newbie. I did install the NTGAppAttack module, and have not had any crashing problems. I did do a backup with Nook Manager, but I am unfamiliar with Noogie (I wish I had known about it before I rooted) and so did not do a Noogie backup. I am tempted to do a Nook Manager restore, but I'm afraid I might brick my NST. I don't think I damaged the partition that contains the serial number since I followed the rooting instructions exactly and had no trouble doing the root. However, I don't know how to tell if I did damage the partition.
My primary reason for rooting was to be able to read a variety of ebooks on the Nook. I also wanted to learn more about rooting.
Hello,
I would like to root a Nook Simple Touch GlowLight. The only reason for doing this is to install Kindle for Android. I have found three particularly popular threads for achieving this:
NookManager
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2040351
TouchNooter
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1343143
GlowNooter
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1675706
Can you please advise which of these I would be best to follow? Can you also recommend anything else that I must (or should) do following the recommended procedure - Any particular apps or configurations for either optimal enjoyment of Kindle for Android or the usability of the device (regarding refresh, etc).
Thank you.

I have only used two of above for 4 x NST not a NSTG so far.
Now I've literally got two NSTG arrived today waiting at home for me to play with (Just been reduced to £49 in UK so I expect a lot more visitors to this forum asking such questions).
If your new to Nook simple touch devices then please be aware of firmwares. A lot of older more mature stuff for NST relies on the v1.1 firmware base. All new NST and NSTG in UK and other places will already be on v1.2 from factory.
NookManager is newer and supports v2. It has a backup feature. Before anything else boot off it. Backup your NSTG. Connect usb cable to PC while using Nookmanager and copy the backup to a PC.
I would also use Noogie and make another backup a different way.
That way if you screw anything up and or don't like root method you can go back.
Before rooting I strongly recommend registering your stock nook and if your going to stick with version 2 update to latest one following instructions on B&N website.
Touchnooter is a lot older and I tend to use that when I am using a v1 base (you lose some features but can gain a very quick lag free multitouch norefresh NST).
I have never used glownooter. Obviously it sounds more NSTG specific which is a good thing.
Personally I don't know how much the NST and NSTG differ internally. Certainly if you start messing around with different kernels make sure they support NSTG or you may lose the glow ability.
I will be trying the NookManager route first. Highly recommend coolreader app as alternative to BnN reader.
I'll let you know how it goes with mine. I will be using it stock for little while first though.
Oh the kindle app did not work that great when I tried it. If you really want kindle that much is it worth buying one..... Certainly if its not up to your standard then use your backup return nook to stock. Only then de-register device and return it.
If running v2 firmware then rather than norefresh (works best on v1) you would be after fastmode. I would not recommend that for reading ebooks. Scrolling PDFs maybe.
Crispy
Noogie guide for backing up
You can use winimage mention in above guide to stick Nookmanager on a sdcard too.
When booting off Nookmanager say no to wifi, Rescue->Backup, Use rest of space on SD card, create backup.
Obviously make sure your device is well charged and choose a big enough sd card to hold the backup. Its about 300MB compressed. As the backup is stored on a second partiton on the sd card windows won't easily be able to access it. To copy to PC once complete plug a usb cable in while running nookmanager and it will appear as mass storage device. Some of my nook's usb cables were charge only ones (very handy) so if cable is thin and long use a different cable.
Also for others reading the NSTG also comes with the most compact usb charger I've ever seen. Its actually smaller than my samsung one. NST comes with no charger.
Based on this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1961835 avoid using glownooter
To get fastmode working I've confirmed v166 kernel works with glowlight.
Thank you for your reply
Perhaps you might be able to help here, too?

Thanks again!
The nook glow-light I am trying to root has 1.1.5 firmware. The device got rooted but the market app doesn't work properly in order to download the opera browser (the other one doesn't work either), and the amazon app store keeps telling me: "Please enter a valid email and password" and doesn't let me log in with the same credentials that I use to log in from my pc. The opera app isn't even listed among the handful of apps listed on the Market app. What can the problem be? How can it be fixed? If I can't properly use this old nook model as an e-ink android I will have to return it. The only reason I purchased it was to root it.
If anyone know the fix please explain it to me in simple terms as I am not a great tech savvy.
Thx.

You should definitely return to stock firmware and update to 1.2.1 before anything else. Then, you can re-root and enjoy.
Restoring to stock and re-rooting can be done with the NookManager rooting tool. Updating your software version can be done by following the instructions at B&N.
