Click general. Tell them you are setting up windows phone 7 and it required an activation.
they asked for my name, phone number, and manufacturer of phone (HTC)
within a minute I had my code

By 'General' do you mean:

I visit there, chat with the supporter... And he told me to call my local supporter.
I said I called but they couldn't provide me an activation code so I contact US.
He told me to call the activation center and didn't give me any code :|

I can confirm this works. I'm based in the UK - gave them name, uk number and said HTC 7 and they gave me a code no problems.

Worked like a charm!!!
Still yet to test the code but i received an activation code within three minutes.
WHat section are people selecting. Can't see general. Says "Chat not available" on most of em :/

tried chatting and they told me to call support
I tried chatting with general chat, as the instructions said, and they told me to call the technical support 800 number right away rather than giving me an activation code. I think they've caught on to this. :-(
Dammit, even though I selected united states as my location the agent said I was from the UK so I needed to give them a call
Worked for me now...after trying 6 or 7 times..
I don't understand why some of them are lying and saying that they dont have the tools to do it and that I have to call the support instead.

had to give the support agent following informations: full name (real), phone number (my number), brand of phone (htc), no live id, no imei, no specific model name
had to wait a couple of minutes while she generated my key and got it!
Worked for me!
This is easier than I thought. I got an activation code within 5 minutes with the first rep. Thanks!

What did you tell them? I tried twice already. Even used an anonymous US proxy, cause the first time they detected that I'm from Russia and told me to call local Support. Anyway, both reps insisted on me calling a 1-800 number...
I used an anon USA proxy and they gave me a code. Woo!

Just try again and again
The last person didnt say anything about me having an norwegian IP. she just asked for my name and phone number and then generated the key for me.
Worked! first time...used us portal (Dutch was closed...)

No, that was a rumor started by somebody who has been banned multiple times because hes a scammer. (afaik).
What do M$ say to you when you ring them?
If they say to ask your carrier just say that you've been on phone to them multiple times and they keep sending you to M$, others have said that and got key.
First time they asked for an IMEI number. the second time, then they asked for a phone number and when I gave them mine, they told me to contact M$ in my country...
and these calls cost A LOT for me...
Just send them an email and they will give it to you

If you can't call them in your own country call the US support through skype - it's free. A code generator would be warez, and therefor not allowed on xda. Microsoft made a release vaguely saying that they don't really care and will continue giving away free codes.
Tried e-mail 3 times with 3 different e-mails. they didn't gave me a code. I guess I'm out of luck or just stupid...
I sent another email now without making up lots of stories and now they want my phone number, device, and name. What should i answer?(I told them I have hd7)

I did my HD2 yesterday and have another one to do once i get another class 6 memory card. I telephoned the German MS support number and after explaining that i was english and couldnt reach the english support number (so could she speak english?) explained that both myself and my girlfriend have just bought HD7's, the damn things wouldnt work without a key for live services and that the sales assistant mentioned nothing of this.
I offered to give both telephone numbers and asked if the one key code would work for both, she replied that she didnt need any telephone details from me as it doesnt matter and that she would have to give me 2 codes as one wouldnt work for both units. she then asked me for my name (i told her my name was fred something or other) and she then asked for an email address (i gave a fresh one i made for the pourpose without my details) A couple of minutes later she had generated both keys and gave them to me over the telephone.
She was really nice and well mannered and the whole thing was a breeze.
Really guys believe me when i say M$ do not give a damn about what handset you have. Its not like they are losing anything by giving out the keys, if anything they are creating potential marketplace shoppers.
I have an HD7 also and upon comparison the only difference i can see is camera quality, the function and feel is identical.

you must be silly if you don't try the skype method and give up!!
- uses your wifi or 3g internet (so its practically free)
- calls are very clear (even clearer than a normal mobile call)
- masks your location (support guy only ask me if canada or us)
- no queue time
- call completed in less than 5 minutes
i called at CST 9am and only tried once
they did not ask for my phone number or imei, just full name and live id
writing down the 25 digit code can be a pain in the arse though if the support guy has a foreign accent (no racism intended), you will need to make sure you wrote it down correctly by repeating back to him, then thank him nicely and disconnect from Skype, enjoy your HD 7 phone
*HTC has a lot of free useful apps in the marketplace, I would suggest grabbing them asap after activation
i try chat chat service..they keep telling me contact HTC or sales office..i try few time even the proxy..finally..i get my code via the online email support @ microsoft website~~no nd phone number either ..wat i said is jus

Thats pretty much standard. I didn't lie to them. I gave them my name, email address and telephone number.
so should I give her my real name and phone and country even thought its not a US or UK number??
EDIT:done that...I hope i didnt make a mistake by telling her that i'm not from the us and my real phone number...

I have tried by phone and e-mail and have had no luck I have been asked every time to provide an IMEI number which obviously I dont have... Not sure what to try next. If someone has a spare one or decided they dont want WP7 on their phone anymore could you post it to me via email? I will provide email if someone would be happy to do it

Dial *#06# in your dialer. A number should appear - copy down every digit. This is your IMEI number. When they ask for one, read it to them. They'll give you a code. They asked me for my IMEI and my activation code worked perfectly.

I just did a microsoft chat. The first person asked for an IMEI. I just closed the chat. Then did it again to get a different rep. This one only asked for my number, last name, and phone type. He got me an activation code. It all depends on who the rep is. If you get a rep that asks for the IMEI, close and and try for another rep.

Tried the online chat (US) they just directed me to the UK contact info.. shame.
exact same response I got, sent an email to UK support but asked for IMEI have to wait and see now if they accept my IMEI number we shall see!
How do you get to the chat page? I emailed them (US) but I think chat would be easier, so I went on their website and went to the windows phone 7 consumer support page. It loaded the page but instantly redirected me to the "contact us" page. This page gives no real support, it only says to look for answers on microsofts forums, contact your mobile operator, or your phone manufacturer. Not sure how to chat with an actual microsoft person.

lol How could it be a threat There is no one to threaten, its just the choice I have to make if I cant get a key. All I keep getting is being redirected to the contact us page on the UK site where it says to contact HTC or my mobile provider. Like I said I am going to try again tomo since they are shut now all I am asking for is help to obtain one

Under the US contact list select general enquirys but unless your in US they are no help
Use my method, though it's kinda evily :
1-[Skip if you're in the U.S] Use anonymitynetwork.com to get a U.S IP .
2- Go to YouTube and look for a video that shows how to upgrade the sd-card of an HD7 (look for "HD7 upgrade slot" ?) .
2-2 He probably won't hide the IMEI (at least I found someone who didn't ) and copy that IMEI.
3- Contact MS Chat and tell them your HD7 is asking for activation code, when they ask for IMEI just give them that one
If you are an honest guy don't do it

You should call MS Netherlands (the 020 number). I used menu options 2-2-3-2 to get someone who could give me an activation code.
Not using WP7 right now. I miss a good navigation program and a decent divx player.

its real fun to skype with them, trust me.
So I ordered an HD2 from Ebay, with WP7 installed and activated, however the seller said that he doesn't have the code anymore.
I have 2 questions:
Is the code generated for a Live account, or for a single device?
Is it stored somewhere after activation? If so, how do you get it?
Just call MS support, they will give you one without too many questions (for me it was only phone n° + email). Just say you bought a windows phone, which is asking for an activation code.
I don't think you can get a number back, you have to store it somewhere to be able to use it again. I think it is linked to a live account, which can have more than 1, but not 100% sure about it.

WP7 phones aren't officially sold in Russia, so I don't think I can get the code..
Using Skype, call MS in The United States
Hey guys, I called Russian MS support, and they gave me the activation code!

Could you please tell me the toll free number for activating in India?
Go to MS website, look for contact at the bottom, then by phone.
You will get a number, maybe not free but cheap
Call them, try to get somebody as fast as you can (usually I press many times '*') and ask for the number of the activation service, which should be a local or free call..

I had read all the methods and in fact this is the easiest (or at leas it was for me).
I live in Spain so i called the Spanish Microsoft Support: tel 91 754 70 10
I think the hardest step is getting the phone number, really hard to get in contact with them!!
Once you call you get a machine answer, follow the steps until you get through to an operator, he/she will ask you how can they assist you, just say that you want to use your XBOX live ID hotmail account on your WP7 phone and they will even say to you, oh you must need the 5 line activation code. I said i suppose its that, so then she asked me for my full name, phone number and an email address.
Once given, that was it, she put me on hold for a moment and then gave me the code.
As simple as that, hope it works for you as well!
My only concern now is that if i flash mi phone again, will the activation code stil work for me??

Hey guys, im from venezuela, is 9:24 am here, and since yesterday im trying to have live services in mi phone, and nothing, the phone number of microsoft helpdesk here dont have the option to activate the phone, via chat with microsoft us they only give me the same phone number, i even send a email to microsoft india trying to get the freaking code, dont know nobody in US, if some of you can help me to get one, please let me know, pm me or anything, even smoke signals work... thx

acivation fixed finally
all what you want to do is to call the customer service in usa by skype, it is free like police so you don't need credits to call them the only hard step is that they will ask you about your phone so give them any number in usa and any email and they will give you the activation code, you can find their number by searching for it in google.. it works i live in Egypt and i gut my activation code all will take about 15 minutes
