Lower/Turn Off Backlight on Boot - Droid Incredible General

I've noticed that my battery takes a definite hit when I reboot my phone; I know that it's doing a lot of work with leading everything, but the screen's on full brightness, too. I was wondering if there was a way to turn it off (or, better, turn it to a bare minimum - I just installed a badass boot animation )?
Sorry if this has been asked/answered before, and/or is in the wrong forum - I did a search and didn't find anything, and couldn't really decide which forum was best for the question...

If you know how to make a boot animation of your own, you could just use photoshop and make every color a bit darker.

Cool
If you didn't know how OLED works it might be cool.
But IMHO it is totally useless, why would I want to distort colors for some battery time?
I am sorry i really have the say the screen looks like your phone is going back to factory.
I do not want a AMOLED LED screen look like damaged nokia phone.
Anyway, still thanks for sharing
Maybe this app is useless but screen looks cool when you enable this and you can trick your friends that they broken your phone
The red filter could be useful at night, for preserving night vision as the author mentioned.

First I think some parts of the device won't be usable since graphics might not have any red in it.
Secondly, since when did anyone care about night vision combined with the use of a phone?
Maybe using it as a GPS, but most programs has a night mode anyways.
why all the negative comments.
android is all about options. if you forget your charger and need limited usage of the screen I could see where it would be useful.

Would it not be more useful to make everything dark instead?
Also, I would like to point out:
Even though some comments may be negative that is the whole thing about a discussion forum. People disagree and vent their opinions.
I look at the usability of what presented and thus venting my thougts on that, for instance this post and can see none.
I also already knew that red needs less electricity than blue OLEDs. That is true for LEDs as well I believe, or anything emitting light, since blue light carries more energy than red.
This could definitely be useful when you're desperate for battery but need to use your phone... ie you need to find a place and you're running out of battery.... It might not be revolucionary but it's nice to have the option to save some battery when you really need to...
@aeo087 - You are right. Could use this in case of emergency situation. Specially if u are away from charger or a usb port of pc and wants more juice from battery for like listening to FM or music.
I think this is excellent work.
At the very least it suggests using a simpler theme could have a big difference on battery life. I dont have a Galaxy S yet but when I do I will definitely be experimenting with this. Im hoping I could also use this OpenGL filter to have a low power mode, as suggested by dseo80, for use when you know your going to be away from a charger.
This would be awesome as low battery mode

Colour Depth Difference with live / normal wallpapers

Hi Guys,
I've seen some discussion around the HD2's screen colour depth.
I've been doing some experimenting and have found that the colour depth is decreased when using a live wallpaper.
Im using the Darkstone's Froyo V1 Build with Cotulla's latest zImage. I havn't tested with the Sense build yet...
Give it a try :-
Set a Live Wallpaper
Now Add The Analogue clock widget, power control and Home Screen Tips widgets to a blank desktop.
Notice the Gradients of the widgets look blocky and appear low resolution.
Now apply a normal Image Wallpaper and you'll notice a real increase in quality of the gradients in those Widgets
I've taken screenshots to show you but when the screenshot of the Live wallpaper is looked at on the computer it looks perfect so must be an issue with the Way the HD2 is displaying it..
Here's the 2 screenshots :-

HD2 has poor colour quality from the get go, running multiple applications let alone an OS that is overlapping another OS on top of of multiple applications running in the background is bound to have more than some effects, least of all important right now being the colour. I have no idea what you're talking about, but perhaps a quick browse over the forum rules would be a good start, it isnt 9 million pages long so you shouldnt have too much trouble. The least you could do is post in a thread of whoever ROM/Android release you are using.

Yeah unfortunately they look normal on the screenshots i took for some reason which leads me to believe there's an issue with the way it's been displayed on the HD2.

First of all - the point of my post was to 'Prove' that the HD2 can display more then 65K colours as was first thought, if you'd read my post at all - what you've posted above is a complete nonsensical response.
This IS important as people 'like you' seem to think the HD2's screen is of low quality when in fact it isn't.
Maybe you'd have an idea of what im talking about if you took the time to read my post instead of 'trying' to be a Mod?
Maybe you should peruse the Forum rules and then you may in fact realise that i havn't broken any of them?
I wasn't moaning about it not booting, GSOD, SOD, No Sound etc i posted a unique 'observation' that may help in the further development of 'proper' graphics drivers for our port.
I also wasn't moaning about a bug of this particular build - so why should it be posted in the Thread for that build?
I just think some people around here have a chip on their shoulder and are trying to be something they are not - & you dear sir are not an XDA mod.
...whoa...nice...calm down guys...calm down...
Yep, no reason to get upset. I think that's a pretty interesting point you found there. Do you have any opportunity to store the screenshots into a lossless format? I really can't tell any significant difference from the two jpg´s you've posted there - been watching the two for about a minute and i can tell you that my eyes are known to color difference detection
i think it's better a thread like this than the 2348740860th always about "no booting, no sound, no radio, no android, no intelligence", all completely useless if the author read the forum form 5 minutes before posting, this thread is about a new "problem / symptom" and it's not useless... maybe it's not importante now to obtain 16m colors, but it's always something that can be fixed
on topic guys Dev forum not flaming
Keep it peaceful
Josh
i haven't really used an actual android phone (day to day) but im sure Google put that in there, because of Live wallpaper taking up CPU power thus lowering the quality of widgets.
EDIT: and the pics look EXACTLY the same (except for the wallpaper and time of coarse.)
but, on the device itself it is less quality, ive seen it before and thats why i use a static wallpaper.
Hi guys, yeah as i said in the post for some reason the screenshots taken directly didnt really show the difference for some reason.
I've taken some pictures using a camera and the difference is clearly highlighted here.
Cheers
Paul
I installed a live wallpaper on my Desire V5 build and noticed that the moon on the weather portion of the Sense clock (it was a clear night last night) changed color and looked a little more green than gray with the live wallpaper running. Don't know if its a bug or not, but it's just my observation.
Sorry to resurrect this ageing thread but it at least shows I bothered to search for it.
I seem to get this effect on some ROMS more than others, I also get it on the wallpaper itself but only for some.
I am thinking that it must be the wallpaper itself for me, it must be in a colour depth beyond the capabilities of the phone. For instance if I install the honeycomb ADW theme with the wallpaper enclosed I get this effect on the wallpaper.
Couldn't see any other threads about this, any ideas anyone?

The Search for Android Degauss Effects

Earlier today I got into a discussion about CRT monitors with a bunch of nerds. We all spoke lovingly of the ffffffTWWAANGGGGGGG noise that degaussing makes and the general benefits of doing this action periodically to your screens. One of the gentlemen in the room mentioned that his Motorola Droid Evo 4g has a screen flicker and washout much like a crt that needs a degaussing.
This led me to wonder, "Why hasn't the dev community created a degaussing application for our phones?" After all, we spend dozens to hundreds of hours and dollars in modification to and accessorizing our phones. Why not take it a step further and make sure that the screen itself has an even longer life?
So who is with me dev scene? I'm to damn stupid to develop this application as my fundamental knowledge of how linux actually works on a ground level is severely lacking. I implore one of you randy fancypants out there: Please help nerds have that delicious fffffTWANNGGGG again.
Edit: I just realized this would be much better suited for general android application development. Can a mod move it?
hey matey, this would be a great idea, however lcd's dont need deguassing lol
althought it would be amazing as a screen on animation or a timeout animation lol
i can see why you want a degaussing feature but i dont really think its necessary and that's wiithout taking into account its impossible lol.
degaussing is he method of clearing magnetic interferance and other electrostatic interferences out of the screen that just dont effect a lcd screen which is one of the benifits of them
great idea though!!
Okay well that being said I think it would be a fantastic boot animation/noise.
of course ! that would be amazing, using it as animation and boot animation would be cool... have you seen the CRT animation for screen off and on, its on cyanogen mod roms its pretty neat!

I tricked a nephew of mine to trade an old samsung S4g vibrant (tmobile) with a relatively new Galaxy Y. I wanted to play around with an older phone for tweaking experiments and I noticed after a month now (and 5 Roms and several wipes) that a shadow of the android keyboard shows up everytime the screen displays a white background. It does not show up on black though and it reminds me of the old degauss issue with crt monitors.... Is there any solution for this?

This sounds exactly like LCD burn-in. I don't think there's much you can do about it if the screen already shows ghost images like that.
A fake degauss would be a great animation for a FC, but since something is already crashing, wouldn't the animation have trouble playing smoothly, especially full-screen?
(Apologies for the junk post, but I'm trying to get enough posts to give feedback on stuff in the Dev section.)

Not a fan of Voodoo Color

I just tried the latest Samurai kernel with Voodoo Color and I am not a fan. I know a lot of people love it but personally I don't. At first boot your phone is dim. Then you have to download an app to set the colors. I tried several people's suggestions and didn't like any of them. So there is constant fiddling to get the colors the way I would like. Plus I had to turn my display up to about 35% when normally use about 15%. That has to eat up more battery, as well as constant adjusting. Then between the kernel and Voodoo app I am down 30 MB of RAM then what I normally have. I know for gaming it is probably the shizzle but for just a phone and browsing, not needed.
I flashed back to Samurai 2.08 and phone looks great still, lower screen brightness and actually is faster. Not sure if that is the kernel or lack of voodoo color.
Just had to get that out. I am sure this will open up a pros and cons discussion of voodoo color. I guess this would be a first edition of Kenny's Blog...LOL.

I dont really care much for it either. Whenever I start up a rom with a fresh voodoo kernel, the screen is piss yellow. I have tried a few different setting suggestions, but the screen is always way too blue. My friends drewl over this super AMOLED screen without doing anything to it.... i kind of agree with them.
Meh I tried it, thought itd be sweet, but not really lol. Using chainfire is better (Nightmode). Voodoo color is fun to mess with, for a few minutes XD

I agree. Didn't see significant benefit to having it either! (On the Epic) I think it can make a huge difference on other devices though, from images I've seen. Not to knock the Voodoo team as their work is awesome.
I AM a fan of CM7's RenderFX (and widgets) that can make the screen go all green or red or low cal night mode (and more) - each with a single toggle - is pretty damn sweet!
My feeling on this is if you need a program to custom tweak the nominal display colors as if its a high end digital cinema: maybe you got the wrong phone.

I like it, it makes my blacks blacker, and my whites whiter... as for the resources it takes, that I do agree with, not that it takes a lot, but 2.0.8 was a little quicker for me. I keep my phone at about 5 - 10 percent brightness all day. I think it looks nice though, personally I feel it is better then stock. And if you are getting the yellow stuff on boot, or on dim, probably have the wrong settings.

@kennyglass123
I've been tempted to post the same thing, but I assumed I must be doing something wrong because everyone else seems to love Voodoo Color. I tried every combination of settings that have been posted (including those above), and though they may add some punchiness, the colors always seem to be very unbalanced/inaccurate (either too blue, or too yellow, or too something else I can't put my finger on). I also tried dozens of my own combinations, just can't get it set to anything that doesn't end up bugging me after a while. Oh well, I'm going to follow your lead and flash back to 2.08 for a while and see if I miss Voodoo.
I like my phone really dark, and that might not be for everyone
Some of this may be due to inevitable inconsistencies in these screens of ours from their factory days. But I find VC to be preferable even at defaults. Colors seem much truer and the nasty bluish tint over much of the screen is lessened.
I love it. Not sure what it's doing for everyone else that doesn't seem to be causing a problem here.
Here are my settings, took me a bit to get my screen to where it looks best for me:

Wow.. are you reading my mind? I flashed it and ran for a few days. Even a very non-technical co-worker saw my phone and asked if my screen was going out since the colors looked weird. She always commented on how beautiful the screen looked.
Had to crank up my screen brightness turning off auto-brightness as well which is killing my battery.
Soo..what's a stable Samurai to go to? I'm not interested in voodoo, oc/vu, just plain ole I want my daily driver to work.

I wouldn't call it a problem, just like I said, not a fan. I tried several suggested settings and no matter what on some screen something always seemed off. That and having to crank the display brightness up is just not for me. I am real happy with the beauty of the stock colors. I see the potential for the voodoo color but it would take too much work and adjusting until I would be happy with it.

im running Marcus's rom, which comes with sam 2.06.
I tried flashing the new sammy colonel last night, and aside from the fact that the colors looked piss yellow, it was really laggy.. to the point were i reflashed the rom to get 2.06 back.. didnt really see that coming
Also, Im not really sure what everyones talking about with the "blueish" tint of the stock colors. I held my epic up to my GFs Moto Atrix, expecting to marvel at how much better my samsung screen looked, only to find that (even on the stock, non-VC colors) it looked piss yellow compared to her moto.
So, aside from not wanting to have to eff with the color settings, the main kernal right now that has it, apparently, hates my phone anyways

Only on 1st boot and look. Then I saw everyone using the 2nd profile and tried all the settings I can find. There was always something off, one was too blue, one was too warm, one was too brown, and all were too dark requiring at least doubling my normal brightness setting which uses up more battery.
I would spend time tweaking my TV a little but don't want to keep doing it for the phone. It is awesome that it is better than sliced bread for a lot of users but just not for me.

Green Screen Syndrome

Its just a **** load of hyperbole.
Go into Voodoo Sound and scroll down to "Voodoo Color" and adjust the sliders.
NO ONE has the same screen/eye combo so what looks smexy for the kernel dev might look like a drunk heffer to you.
Personally my phone doesn't experience the green screen because I sat there and adjusted each value till I got the color reproduction I wanted (it may not be "true white" but I like my vibrantness ) so people, get off your asses and make your phone YOUR PHONE by putting in what you feel is the most comfty for your eyes.
If that's too much for you and you'd rather wait for the kernel devs to **** up their colors on their screen so that your BASE colors may or may not be correct, then maybe you shouldn't be worried about color and just stick with stock dull values.

Lol really? All I see in every rom thread is "my screen is green I flashed this kernel cuz I want voodoo color but I can't be bothered to read through 50 pages to see the fix". And the replies are all "SEARCH!!1!11ONE!!"
The purpose of this thread is so people who have the green screen can open and see how their laziness contributes to their problem.
I am all in favor of turning this into a settings discussion but the main purpose has been stated
Also, my settings are very inaccurate, not true colors at all lol but just raise your gamma a tiny bit and everything will be good

I see your point but i guess were just trying to get them to be less lazy is all haha, and voodoo color will depend on each kernel like shadow vs samurai but there kind of identical so pretty much same settings should give same results.

If by green screen, you mean the flash of green everytime I unlock my phone, then its not "laziness" that contributes to the problem, its the ShadowKernel. I am not going to raise my gamma settings so that the screen is completely washed out just so the green flash doesn't happen when I unlock my phone. I have been using voodoo color for a LONG time spanning multiple versions of androids and at least a half a dozen different kernels, and this is a the ONLY one that has had this problem. I have always used the "punchy" setting, and this is the only time I have ever seen that green flash.
I had the same green screen problem then I turned off automatic brightness and it stopped.

Its probably the combination of voodoo color and ics.

Its definitely your laziness giving you the green screen.
People moaned and groaned to bbelos about how he should incorporate custom settings into shadow so that they can have nice ass colors out the box, and on bbelos phone it can handle low gamma obviously which is why the gamma is so low and he put his values in and everyone expected it to lookk the same on their phones and couldn't be bothered with no type of personalization on their part.
If you can't manage to slide your gamma bars a little to the right to correct this problem, then don't complain when the fix is posted. You've obviously never bothered to mess with the sliders because if you did, you would've seen how much raising the gamma 2 values "washes out the screen".
Don't try to throw your $.02 in if you can't even bother to try it, otherwise your opinion is one sided and void.

Its definitely kernel related.
Remember, samurai was a (very stable) hackjob kernel, pulling bits and pieces from every other kernel he can find.
I don't **** with samurai, but I'm pretty sure he has custom values set too, which will affect more phones than benefitting them

You're a blithering idiot who didn't even read my post. Making my screen look like **** isn't a "fix". I have run the "punchy" gamma settings on multiple roms and multiple versions of Android, and NEVER had a green flash when waking the device . . . . . until CM9 and Voodoo Color.
I like how my phone looks with all of the gamma settings set to -45. Yet you are telling me the FIX is to set them to -43? Hint, it still happens when the gamma is set to -30 for all values, and the screen looks significantly ****tier.
I do love how you make assumptions though and freely insult others based solely on your own arrogance. Its very cute.

Calm down. I wonder, if voodoo color just doesn't work they way you want it to, after messing with the sliders and you still aren't satisfied.. wouldn't it be best just to leave it alone?
