I completely new to the whole flashing and custom rom thing. I've never tried anything like it and don't know much about it. The closest I've come to hacking or rooting my Vibrant phone is with the OCLF app. Now, I too have been patiently waiting for Froyo to come out and for some reason when it did come out I was hesitant to get it. I wanted to see what people were saying about it before I downloaded and installed it. So far from what I'm seeing, its not all its cracked up to be and it seems like Froyo for the Vibrant is "meh" for most. This is a bummer to me but I kept hearing about using a custom and its advantages. Thankfully I bumped into a very useful thread posted by xriderx66 on his reviews on some of the roms out now. Based on what he said, I'm looking to flashing my phone to the Bionix-V Rom by Team Whiskey. Problem is I have no idea how to get started. What do I need to do to flash my phone? Any program I need to download first? How do I backup my files? I'm such a noob at this its funny but I'm willing to take the risk and experience this phone the way it should be experienced. If someone can post a link showing a step by step on how to do the whole thing I'd really appreciate it. Thanks in advance
Go to the development thread and browse through the stickies. Reading and more reading should be the first two things you do. Pay attention to anything relating to odin.

Your welcome. Let me know if you run into any issues.
Sent from a Galaxy S far....far....away.
That thread he posted for you is the best information I have been able to find for someone that is just getting started. I too am just kinda dancing around flashing bionix v. I have rooted and downloaded rom manager and clockwork though...just about ready to flash as soon as I gather up the courage. But everything I have done up to this point was learned in the Noob Guide he linked. Its like vibrant flashing for dummies.

Will do jbat! Once again thanks. @ goodvibrant, I hear you. Tomorrow when I have the time I will flash this phone to the Bionix thanks to this noob guide. I took a look at the guide and it seems pretty easy to follow. I look forward to it!

I just installed the latest cm nightly on my new ns4g unfortunately it doesn't support cdma radios yet, like an uber noob I was so excited to flash cm I forgot to backup first. I need a stock image to get my phone working again.
/facepalm
I thought 2.3.4 had cdma and 4g built in. Have you tried one of those roms?
Try a rom built from source of 2.3.4. Cm just barely started to merge 2.3.4 in.
Or the problem is he doesn't have the correct kernel from what I understand.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
The 2.3.4 kernel has wimax code in it. Whether that extends to full rom support I'm not sure.

Would miui work? Since it has been updated to 234

no it wont. and netarchy did alot to help me getting a kernel. it looks like i messed up flashing the radio... doh. now i need to figure out how to get the correct radio back on. i knew i should have waited before i jumped right on rooting this thing.
It will be on here soon. Don't worry. Just a pain in the buttto wait for a day or two!

im sorry but i dont feel one shred of pity for you. if your willing to take the plunge on testing things out before the phone comes out, then you should have at least made a backup of the stock files.. if you didnt know how to then you coulda asked.. or hell at the very least after flashing CWM made a nandroid

Actually a nandroid wouldn't have helped him, because his problem is that a rom he flashed was bundled with a gsm radio image. It's the cdma radio image he needs.
I'm not asking for you to feel bad or pity me. I messed up i'll take all the blame. yes i should have backed up to start off i knew i should have i was just too excided. i was a 8 year old on christmas morning with my new toy
I know there are people out there that can help me and i'm hoping by asking i can get that help. you can't blame me for that, if i dont ask i'm stuck here for days without a working phone. if i ask there's a chance i can get my phone working in a matter of hours, if the right person hears me.
no i agree there are people. what rom would bundle a gsm radio?
anyways if some one is willing to help all they need to do is just root, and dd the modem partition, they can upload it and then you can flash it. worst case im in EST and my sprint store opens at 10 am.. ill be making a total system dump when i get home. if you still need it by then you can download it.

you mean tomorrow correct? i assume so since that is the official release and it's currently 11:20 EST today. if that is the case i'm sure i'll still be here waiting for it.
Thanks for you help
well hopefully you can get in contact with someone today and they can make a backup of the radio for you to flash...
try...
if someone can tell me the best root method and how to do the dump, I will do it
I have heard of a lot of reports from people that loose functionality of their radio and even more drastic problems after flashing some ODIN packages...
Now, i don't know which ODIN package is responsible, i know that bubby323 did make a faulty package, somewhere down the line..
ODIN is a last resort... Us here can get you up and working most of the time without even having to open up... ClockWorkRecovery is our friend
If you absolutely need to ODIN, What i suggest is going into the package with 7-zip, and checking whether or not there is a modem file... if there is, delete it... That's just my advise
Also, i have had a couple of reports of people getting fried from with CWM.... As of right now, i would tread lightly in there.... Backups and Restores should be fine, but don't do anything crazy in there If you do need to do anything does not require edify (3.0+) scripting, i suggest using the blue recovery...
This is all just my own personal opinions and such, do whatever you want
Thank you for the warning

Ok, maybe I suck at searching, and if I missed it, I apologize, but...
Has anyone made a rooted version of the OFFICIAL (not leaked version) stock Gingerbread rom yet? I'm basically looking for the complete OTA update with no changes except root.
And please don't make fun... I actually LIKE some of the T-Mobile bloat, but much of it does me no good as I'm using the handset with Wind Mobile. I want to stay stock, but keep root so I can freeze/delete the bloat I don't need or want.
I suspect it's a little early in the OTA to be looking for this, but I thought it was worth a shot anyway.
Thanks
It's on the first page of the Dev section. Don't know how you missed it.

No problem. Although you should try VU if you haven't. Much more appealing than TMO's mySense.
EDIT: Wait, I notice that you're in Canada. So I'm assuming you have the HTC Panache? If so then I'm not sure if this would be compatible. Again I'm just assuming, just make sure.
Unlocked MyTouch 4G actually.
Main reason I'm sticking with stock is that I actually like the genius button feature and swype keyboard.

Thats not the official version that is being sent out OTA and via sdcard (at some retail locations) the official one:
Build-2.09.531.1 CL54593 release-keys
Software-2.09.531.1
Baseband: 12.55.60.25P_26.09.04.26_M
has yet to be uploaded, correct me if I am wrong. But telling people that is the official version being released by tmo is incorrect.

Yeah, I thought it was the OFFICIAL version myself. Now I have a few issues after flashing the ROM, and being a new member, I can't even let anyone know about it as I can't post in that thread....
1) Lost my Mail app. No big deal - I just installed Maildroid.
2) GPS isn't working. It's turned on, but I'm not getting a lock at all in either the coverage mapper app or Google maps. This IS a big deal.
If anyone has a solution to problem #2, please let me know.
*EDIT*
Here's what I got now:
Android version 2.3.4
Build number 2.19.531.1 CL95282 release-keys
Baseband version: 12.28b.60.140eU_26.03.02.26_M
Kernel version 2.6.35.10-g225de41

Well, the radio is definitely wrong comparing to the official version, and it looks like flashing the newest radio should fix the issue according to: http://forum.xda-developers.com/archive/index.php/t-1185039.html
So assuming that the newest radio is 12.55.60.25P_26.09.04.26_M, if I can find it then it should play nice with the rest of the updated ROM?
Alternatively, can I just download the Panache radio version or the Froyo radio I had before and flash one of them?
Sorry for the noob questions here, but I'm just getting into this and I'm trying to be careful. Files and directions I'm finding with no problems, but compatibility specifics are still a little beyond my reach.
You have stock radio. if you wanted updated radio for that you should have renamed the zip as pd15img and flash in hboot... I think... Please read the whole thread before doing so. anyways try flashing KC's version of the leaked tmo. btw radios are the top sticky in the android dev section.

LOL! ”I think” does not inspire confidence....
This whole thing is frustrating, and it's largely my own fault for just taking someone's word for it instead of checking myself.
Either way, what's done is done, and I'll just try to switch the radio and run as is until someone makes an untouched but rooted official stock version.
When and if that happens, I'll start fresh.
I'm not feeling up to setting up my phone from scratch yet again at the moment.

lol sorry i remember going through the thread over a month ago or so, and I was on my phone and too lazy to search it myself. I am still lazy to search it, but from my experience, KC's version is more "user-friendly" it's stock too, so give that a go.
I have a plan, but I understand that flashing a radio is somewhat of a risky procedure, so I'm looking for verification on a few things before I start.
As I said above, once someone comes out with a rooted but otherwise untouched OFFICIAL (final) Gingerbread stock ROM with radio, I'll just replace the whole mess, but until then....
So, I'm permarooted using visionary. S off checked in hboot. I do NOT have radio s off though, from what I've read - don't know if that really makes a difference.

I'm intending to flash the 3rd Gingerbread ROM in the thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1059347 using the directions in the same thread.
Does anyone see any issues with this ROM/radio combination or the procedure?
Anything else I should know before I start that isn't in the thread?
Any help is appreciated as I can't afford to brick my phone right now, and I wouldn't be doing this except my GPS hasn't worked since I flashed the ROM, and I need it.
That's exactly how I did it; GPS is working fine now. Radio flash was very easy. S=off (without true radio s=off) is all you need. If you can figure out how to get radio s=off using this rom, lmk...

As for the radios, I know. I don't want to flash the ROM again, just the radio to hopefully remedy my lack of GPS. Just wanted to make sure that that particular radio was compatible with the rooted stock Gingerbread ROM I flashed.

I know I am to do som e research so I looked through some videos and I get the understanding of root and rom. Ow my question is I looked through and I didn't see anything about the Samsung epic 4G Gingerbread EL30 which I have . What I would like to know is can I rom my phone and if I can where can I find how to do it cause I swear I looked and couldn't find it. I appreciate your patience with me.
Are you familiar with a program called "Odin"?
To root gingerbread (EL30), you will have to use odin and flash CWM.tar (clockwork mod is a recovery program for your phone) and after you do that, you can flash SU.zip and voila! Insta root! Proceed to flash whatever you want
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA Premium App
No I'm not. I don't have the slightest clue what odin is. I saw that in the videos ad I didn't understand. So you are saying I need us Odin. Where can I find that at? Ok I think I found one from ramad. Now I'm afraid I'm going to mess up my phone lol

Chill stop telling people not to do it themselves...how the fluff do you expect them to learn? We all learned through trial and error lol I was pretty hesitant when I lost my flash virginity back on the hero, but since then its just gotten easier and easier lol
S/he can't brick it unless they flash a rom from a different phone.
But yeah follow these links and they'll help you immensely you could also check out the epic 4g wiki which includes instructions on how to root..

She just sounded way too nervous about it. And disconnecting or using a bad cable while Odining will hard brick a phone. I gave her the guides and didn't tell her not to do it, just recommended maybe it is not a good idea interpretting the level of apprehension. It was way easier with one click roots. Odin scared the hell out of me too and I have been a computer tech, an aerospace tech and associate Engineer. I thought she might want a more technical person to work with her and teach her.

That's his channel specifically epic 4g section on youtube. When I first got into rooting and flashing thats where I learned what I needed to and of course reading a lot on here.
1st tip I can give you: Don't use the USB cord that came with the Epic. Go out and get a nice Blackberry cord or I've had great luck with my wife's HTC Evo Shift cord.
