[App idea] Aetherphone - a musical theremin on your phone. - Android Software Development

"Turn your phone into a robust musical instrument."
I am an artist and can do UI if a developer wants to tackle this. A theremin can be described here:
Here is a demo screenshot I made:

in this demo picture it is showing the "R" reverb filter being scrubbed to 54% the text on screen quickly fades away once the affected button is released.
How to play:
The screen will be able to operate with the vertical axis as pitch (in herz) and the horizontal axis as volume (as %). Optionally these axis can be switched by the user in "settings". Also you can have a split screen mode for two independent instruments OR spit screen with pitch in one window and volume in another is so desired. If the latter sound will only come out when both fingers contact the phone.
Pitch range is by default 100 - 3000 hz but this can bet set to a different bracket in the settings dialog. on the top of the screen it will read the current pitch and closest note your finger is at example: 297 Hz (D)
Waveshape Selection Circle:
Toggles sine, triangle and square waveforms.
Filters:
You have three filter slots that you can customize with 15 different effects. Swap out filters in the settings mode.
• Tap a slot to toggle it on and off while in play.
• Touch and drag side to side on a slot to change the intensity of the effect. While you scrub a large number shows up in the middle of your screen to show you what its value is.
Loop:
Tap loop once and it inverts. While it is inverted it is recording.
Tap a second time and the loop is stored and a number comes up at the top of the screen 1-9.
Tap the numbers to toggle on and off loops. to clear a number drag the number to the settings gear at the bottom of the page. Loop auto snaps to the closest logical length of measure (guided by bpm and time sig settings)
BPM & time signatures can be set by scrubbing left and right. The text pulses gently to the beat and the time sig pulses to the appropriate scale.
Particle effects change under your finger depending on how long you have held a ante and how quickly your finger moves:
Tap a note/vol and a ripple happens like a drop of water.
Sustain a note and you will get many concentric rings fading from that spot.
Zip from one note to another and a line will appear to tell you were you came from. it will fade in one a couple measures.

Whilst this looks way above my coding abilities, I'd love to see this app completed. Good job with the UI, it looks great!

lol, I guess at least proves that there would be an interest in tackling such an app.
Meltus, I am guessing that its the filters that would be the real hard part? I have a hard time imagining the sine pitch to x vol to y would be super hard right? perhaps the visuals might be tricky too, I dont know.

hey man , great job. i think you have found a good developer. i know a man who is exploring music apps, their apps are much simpler than yours. LOL .To be exact, they are music downloader.

this is great! it appears to be a pretty straight forward app. tying tone and pitch to x and y axis inputs on the touch screen. id love to help do the underlying coding but the ui would be tough for me to code. never been much of a ui coder. just logic... perhaps create a github repository for the stub of this app and let us give it a shot.

ok, so I am new, what is a github?

GitHub is something like a SVN(Subversion repository).
It allows multiple people to work and collaborate on the same code.

one handed usage ?

so I got my Jasjar and I'm pretty happy with it so far, however I keep looking at the Treo and wondering if it would be easier to check my mail and calendar with one hand instead of opening the Jasjar with two hands, waiting through the windows mobile slowdown, etc...
on a Treo you have the calendar button right on the face and you can navigate with the direction pad, etc...
the Jasjar it seems a little clumsy to me for this... any ex-Treo owners out there care to comment ?
Also, can we use the Jasjars direction pad for application shortcuts like that ? like press left for calendar, up for email, etc...
any thoughts and ideas ? thanks !
Bump...
is no one else concerned about this ?
Surprise me !
Don't know if buttonmax is compatible, but i think it's the only app that allows you to reconfigure the direction pad.
Re the calendar, just remap record key to calendar etc?
I use SmallMenuPlus, so can do pretty much everything one handed, although requires a couple of taps down to launch the app.

I'm using my ToggleStart and ToggleNew hacks (=ToggleToday) to remove the top and bottom bars and a custom colour theme using cetuner, then from top to bottom:
-PhoneAlarm (with a skin I made, here on the board somewhere)
-AlarmToday (I resource edited the dll to change its appearance, but it's not shown here)
-WeatherPanel
-VJTodaySpacer (unreleased spacer plugin, coming soon!)
-VJEphemeris
VJEphemeris is not tidied up yet: this is my old setup
VJEphemeris was written to replace VJAudioNotes(at the top), QOTD (in the middle) and claunch (at the bottom), so I didn't want it to take more space. Eventually it will take the whole screen and be spread out more.
Quoting from here
I've posted a little elsewhere about my plugin, VJEphemeris, which is a long term work in progress.
Thus far it contains an analog clock, date with popup calendar, alarm clock setting and notification (cus you don't bloody know when it's set and on!), Quote of the day, autosizing according to length, missed call notification, last sms details, temperature, volume control, battery status, current phone operator (for dual sims), multi-bank launcher facility and theft protection (detects if user is using a non authorised SIM, and then sms's me with the phone number (and shortly, cellid), permitting me to sms it back causing it to format the sd, optional hard reset and I'm considering optional bricking - thanks Olipro).
That's the basic version I use currently. I've got tonnes to add when I finish a bit more stuff for release for you lot!
VJEphemeris is a continuous test bed of ideas I'm trying to implement. It's unlikely to be released, or at least as is. It's currently entirely customised around my use (although it's all too damn skinnable: I haven't gone into designing a UI yet, I'm just making it easy to use one thumbed! Try cutting out the screenshot and see how you thumb rests naturally on the important stuff. I'm trying to make it nicely ergonomic).

francorg: I released a prerelease of VJAudioNotes to a few people, but it's been replaced by VJEphemeris. I'm not really releasing either for quite a while (if ever!). Too much to add to it to finish it right now, it's a continuous Work In Progress.

Sounds good, I'll take a look at some of those! Thankss!

The Grid Pattern of the screen is *glowing* in direct sunlight! WTF ???

When the phone is in direct sunlight, depending on the angle, a different row of the grid pattern is glowing (doesn't matter if the screen is on or off).
It is pretty annoying to see this grid sparkling in front of your eyes.
Is my phone defective or does this happen to everybody ?

Same here!
Noticed it as well. I think it's cool.
Cant really see it, except at an extreme angle, not worth worrying about.
I can't ever see anything with the screen on, but in different combinations of extreme lighting and angles, there are 3 different grids/patterns visible.
One of tightly spaced dots, one of widely spaced dots, and one diagonal grid aligned with the wide spaced dots.
I have to really try to see them though, and it never interferes with actual screen use.
I suppose for that to be a problem for me we'd have to have some sunlight once or twice a year! It's been very HD2 screen friendly weather where I live of late (ie, p!ssing down all the time).
Noticed this today too, first bit of sunshine on 3 weeks!! lol
It's completely normal, that's the way our capacitive touchscreen are made!
I can't give you more infos because I don't know why they've made the panel with this pattern, but it's completely normal
P.S.: On my panel, in sunlight, there's not too much glow of the grid pattern, try to maximize your backlight!
However, HTC HD2 rocks
Matrix! WTF
I saw the matrix one day.
With the screen switched off, in direct sunlight, at an angle, I realised my screen works by a matrix.
What if I want to look at my screen while it's switched off, in direct sunlight, at an angle, and not see the matrix.
I'm so disappointed, I want my money back.
same here, is kind of cool, but you have to put the Leo in a very strange angle to see the sparks.

Don't worry, soon you'll find an endless list of shortcomings (just summarizing what was said by many owners in this forum):
1. Control of keyboard is inaccurate (some even use the word "nightmare") and sometimes lag.
2. Random screen presses (which aren't originated by the user)
3. Bad web browser.
4. Inefficient UI (no tasks, annoying swipe control).
5. Low quality camera.
6. Insufficient speaker volume.
7. Too heavy (157 grams) and too big.
8. No dedicated power button.
9. No TV-out
10. No real multitouch.
11. Edges of screen too thin (hard to hold without accidentally pressing something on the sides)
12. Screen way too sensitive.
13. Huge lag with SMS when replying to a contact with large SMS history.
14. Sense UI doesn't cover every setting (and not everybody wants to use it), and many Windows Mobile 6.5 screens are hard to operate with the capacitive screen.
15. There are many more I will continue later...

In the thread where I mentioned all the LEO problems known to date (actually today the list is probably 3x as long), I did say I'm going to purchase the device near the end of the month.
If I don't have the device how do I know about the glowing grid in direct sunlight ?, there is no mention for this phenomena anywhere on the web apart from in this thread.
Anyway, here is a quick proof of ownership:

[REQ] Notification Bar / Calendar Widget

Hello all
Just wanted to thank this community as a whole for all the great work they've done. I'm in love with my N1, rooted with CM and all the good stuff I found on this forum.
After tinkering around with my N1 for quite some time a potentially neat idea occurred to me (hope this is the right spot for it). I use my phone primarily for business use and general functionality. At the same time I tend to nitpick about ease-of-use, convenience and simplicity. My idea (alleging it doesn't already exist) is basically an advanced google calendar widget embedded into the notifications drop down. Obviously, this would turn primary use of the drop down into the said calender, but with the convenience to be able to pull it up in a second while allowing for more effective multi tasking.
I'm not a new to the developers world, but am as far as the Android OS goes. I was hoping a few experienced hands might see this as a nice little challenge. At the same time, for the willing, I would not mind at all attempting this challenge on my own (obviously with some much needed assistance ).
Sorry for the long post, and I look forward to hearing constructive feedback.
Thanks in advance!
Are you thinking more along the lines of something that lists upcoming events, or rather an actual calendar image? I'm not if the latter can be accomplished, but would definitely be willing to start working on something.
Hi!
Welcome to the forums!

You could add a calendar shortcut to the dock using one of the new launchers...

That´s nice, thanx!
Thanks guy, I certainly appreciate all the responses and the warm welcome. Initially I wanted calender functionality inside the notifications drop down because it can be pulled up at anytime without having to switch to any other programs. Often times while writing emails I like to cross check my schedule mid proposal. Two applications/widgets I switch between are the "Pure Grid Calender" and the "Android Agenda Widget". I'm probably going too far here but this would be amazing: Upon touching the top bar initially, it switched to the notifications and the bar lowers a bit (all before actually sliding the menu down). If upon touching the bar, it slid down (that same amount) but with two options, one for notifications and one for calender. you could then slide your finger to the left or right to choose which drop down you want, and proceeded to slide it down and the chosen menu would then appear full screen.
This is probably impossible lol, i have a wild imagination. I can do a better mock-up after work with illustrations if indeed that was too wordy.

Ah I see. Unfortunately, I don't think it's possible to override/replace touching the status bar. You can put things in it, but having 'two' of them with left/right swipe I don't think is user-replaceable.
However, there ARE apps that let you put any shortcut you want in the Notifications Tray:
http://www.cyrket.com/p/android/com.miromind.bartenderlite/
http://www.cyrket.com/p/android/com.schwimmer.android.barcontrol/
I think your thinking of something along the lines of SBSettings for the iphone os?
@ paul Thank you for that information, if nothing else thats very useful.
@ zKilla: i am not familiar with iphone at all, i made the bold move to go straight into the world of android . But after doing some research that seems like it would be a great compromise.. only problem is if its even feasible to build into the N1
Also if any devs know where i could start poking my nose around, perhaps i figure this out on my own, lord knows itll take a few years tho ha

[Design] Note-Tailored Multitasking Launcher

I'm a little crazy about user interface design. And while I am no professional, new ideas for how software could or should work can keep me up late into the night, sketching on my Note. The night official ICS was released a really simple idea hit me as I was falling asleep: the multitasking tray should take advantage of the Note's massive screen size.
For those of you with ICS, take a look at the multitasking pane. It takes up all of the screen and displays relatively little. In addition, compared to other multitasking solutions, it lacks in features. It only displays the recent/running apps. It could really use a re-design.
So I took some time, researched the alternatives and imagined what would be best, and sketched up a design on our favorite drawing device.

}
With this design, the multitasking app windows are arranged horizontally near the middle of the screen. You swipe left/right to move along the list of recent apps, and swipe up/down to close an app. At the bottom is the music tray, with - left to right - the music app button, previous/pause&play/forward, track/artist/album information, and an image of the cover art. Above the multitasking area, there is tray for recent messages and mail. Any recent messages or mail, regardless of read status, will be shown there. You can swipe up/down on the items to scroll through a small selection of them, and tap on one to open your mail app of choice to that message/email. Above the messages/mail tray, there is a quick settings tray for brightness and volume. The volume is assigned to media if there is media playing, or if none is playing then it is assigned to call/notification volume. At the very top, there are buttons for tasks and settings. All of this is located inside a solid textured window that sits on top of the current app, with the current app dimmed/greyed-out a little.
I was very careful with the placing of all of these. I am still undecided as to the placing of the top most three items, but I feel confident in my design thus far. I placed the music tray at the bottom - closest to the thumb, which has just pressed the hardware button for multitasking - for quick, easy, comfortable and intuitive access. The multitasking area takes a large section just above the bottom of the screen and near the middle, to give it the main visual focus of the window. The multitasking app-windows are arranged horizontally near bottom for quicker and easier access, as the thumb/fingers are near the bottom of the screen so the reduced distance and the horizontal swiping motion are the most ergonomic for the form factor. For most people the top three trays are typically accessed less than music and multitasking, so that's why they are near the top (farther from the thumb/fingers). Messages/mail also looks very good near the top of the screen, aesthetically speaking, as the eye tends to look near the top of the screen for important/interesting things. I am tempted to swap the tasks/settings buttons for the messages/mail tray, but that would make messages/mail less easy to access for the fingers and they are a main focus of the device (it being a phone and all).
There are numerous coding implications of this multitasking launcher but they are largely self-obvious (ex. having an option in settings to allow the user to set which music app to use for the music tray).
Comments? Questions? Thoughts?
P.S. Please note I am not familiar with the Android customization scene and do not know if there is already something like what I have designed.

Took the first paragraph, it's a well written introduction. Didn't take anything else. Got my ideas from stock ICS multitasking launcher, stock ICS recommended design language, WebOS cards multitasking launcher, default iOS mulitasking launcher and the iPhone notification pull-down tray.
"Good Artists Borrow, Great Artists Steal"
Yeah, I definitely like the old way of multitasking better. Having so few items on the screen makes it take almost as much tune as just hitting the home button and finding the sop in my homescreen. The long press seems to take longer on ICS too. I'd definitely prefer the iOS method of double clicking to multitask and long pressing for voice actions. The million dollar question, is any of this stuff even possible?

Wallpapers withouth cropping in 4.2

Short version:
How to get cropping like this:
{

"lightbox_next": "Next",

"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",
"lightbox_start_slideshow": "Start slideshow",

"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
(height box as high as the whole box), instead of what we get now.
Hi,
In 4.2, as I understand, I cant set a wallpaper without having it being cropped first - the tool selects different part of the image for landscape and portrait. I understand this, and now that it requires quite a big picture - (2560 for vertical part (in portrait mode) and even more for landscape, because the selected region will be used on, lets say ~3500 pixels (2560+scrolling). so the minimum picture to have and use to get 1to1 pixel is ~3500x2560). And thats fine, there are plenty of pictures like this.
However, when I select a picture to download, o select it as a whole, and not only the middle. So I'd like to put it the whole, as I see it.
It was allowed in older androids.
There is no problem of getting an image of 5020x2560 and higher, so I could use this, but the problem is that 4.2 doesnt allow it at the moment.
If I wanted to do this now, I would have to take the picture, add a big border around it, so the picture itself would be in the middle, and then after cropping, I would get the picture I wanted in the first place.
Hopefully you understood me, and can give advice on how to do this in 4.2.
Thank you
P.S. Just to clarify even more - If, lets say I have image 4000x3000, and I want to display all of it, not just middle, then just let me put it as a wallpaper, and when the tablet is in protrait, there will be more than 2560 pixels to take anyway, so no need of cropping.
Why is it doing cropping anyway?
No scrolling, but this may help:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.ridgelineapps.simpleimagewallpaper&hl=en
I search for 1600x2560 wallpapers, and then set the image to the app linked above. The upside of no scrolling is that moving between homescreens is really smooth (it was already smooth, but no stutters at all).
As far as your question goes, I remember using some ROMs that allowed me to re-size the inner boxes (the one that has vertical and horizontal rectangles on top of one another) inside the picture cropping box, is that feature present in 4.2? If so, enlarge the size of the box, and then you'll be able to see the whole picture, not just the middle, when scrolling around.

I just tried this app, but I got much better results by downloading a 2400x1600 wallpaper and stretching the crop box to fill it (it fits exactly).
I'm in the middle of writing a wallpaper app for the N10, depending on what access is available to the wallpaper setting APIs I'll have it automatically set pixel perfect if possible.

Oh god, thank you for this app rec. I despise the scrolling wallpaper stuff spread out over multiple screens. It seems to do exactly what I want. Have you noticed that it affects battery life differently since it is implemented as live wallpaper?
