Very Disappointed - Galaxy S II General

Hi all, I've received my new Galaxy s2 three days ago and I've faced a lot of the same problems that were affecting my first Sgs.
Here is a quick list:
1- Wifi poor reception (worse than sgs, desire,desire hd and Iphone 4)
2- Screen is blueish like my first sgs(In miu rom or cm7 it isn't blue because I can set the red color with voodoo color!!! so it's a faulty software calibration damn!!)
3- Gps lock is fast but not strong, it keeps disconnecting with Google navigator and works better with Sygic. Worse than Desire, Desire hd, Iphone 4, but better than my Sgs.
4-Random reboot!
5- Poor sound output through headphone!! Worse than all the other devices except Sgs, but since Supercurio realeased Voodoo sound it rocks!
I don't know if this problems could be solved by the community, but I am very frustrated. I put my trust in Samsung again and in the online reviews but now i fell betrayed.
I hope that I could return my phone to get another device but since htc locked its bootloaders I don't know what to choose...
I hope You all find my post useful if You are going to buy Sgs 2.
Could anyone that has Lg phone like optimus 2 tell me if this phone is good or if it has a lot of problems like galaxy 2?

Don't return the phone, there's nothing wrong with it.
I've had 4 Galaxy S2's pass through my ownership so I think I'm pretty well equipped to say whats normal for these phones and whats not.
- Wifi
Wifi reception IS poor. My old HTC Desire and my girlfriends HTC Desire both get MUCH better range on the wifi than the Galaxy S2. The range on all the Galaxy S2's I've had has been the same - poor. This is a common complaint about the G2. Anyone who says they don't have this problem either has no idea what good wifi range is, or is just lying out of their ass.
- Screen
The screen does indeed have a blueish tint on it. There's a thread about it on these forums. Nothing we can do about that. Again, another common issue to all G2's.
Also the some other issues you have mentioned. Touch screen sensitivity is on the low side, you can tap the screen lightly and quickly enough so that it doesn't register an input. This is impossible to do on a HTC Desire.
Also the pixel response time is said to be 0.001ms by Samsung, but this is a load of crap. It works out closer to 6-8ms, as evident when scrolling black text on a white background (or vice versa) the text will blur slightly.
- GPS
The GPS is pretty poor at the moment, hopefully it improves with updates, majority of people are complaining about this, myself included. None of the 4 G2's I had could get a quick lock on GPS (they take flipping ages). The GPS is REALLY hit and miss at the moment.
- Random Reboots
This is a REALLY REALLY common issue. It's been reported everywhere. However, depending on the frequency of the reboots would determine whether or not I'd class it as faulty. Of all the G2's I've had, NONE of them have randomly rebooted. However if yours has rebooted like once or twice over the week, I'd count that as normal, happens on a few android phones. But if it does it anymore than that, get it replaced.
- Poor Sound Output
This is completely subjective. But I have an expensive amp and speaker setup that I use on my PC which I've got used to so I'm really picky about sound quality and yes I agree, the sound output is abit naff. But it's not terrible by any means. I can live with it.

If you think desire and Desire HD has better sound, you need your ears checked.
Desire HD is horrid, absolutely horrid when it comes to sound. It does not even give you proper stereo effects. Its a disaster.
That 1 point made me ignore whatever rest you said.

I use it with miu rom and it comes with dsp that made the sound good. The only problems I have with Dhd is low ringtone( partially solved by kernel implemention) and incall volume very very low and distorted at full volume.
Someone thinks is possible a change if a return the phone in the first 7 days with another phone?

It sounds like you have a faulty device tbh.
I can't compare to all the devices you can but my girlfriend has a desire (on my recommendation.) The SGS2 is superior in every issue you're having. And i loved her desire. I was actually surprised how much of a leap the SGS2 felt like.

All new phones have issues. Actually ALL phones have issues period. This phone is actually getting hugely positive reactions from both reviewers and general users like myself. It always amuses me how some people can only focus on the negative comments

I'm extremely happy with my SGS2. Comparing it to my Nexus S, DHD, Dell Streak, SGT and HD7, I have no complaints at all.
I will buy the HTC Sensation/Pyramid when it comes out, which will be a mistake (locked bootloader), I will set it up and then put it in a drawer forever.
If anyone doesn't like their SGS2, simply take it back. I will be keeping mine. It is amazing.

he is talking about the sound volume level thru headphones i believe. and since tons of other people claim the SGS2 has poor headphone volume, i think he is telling the truth. just look around the forum, the posts are everywhere.

Exactly I was talking about headphones...I think that I will try a substitution to see if another sgs2 is different

I used GPS + Google Nav for over 5 hours straight 2 days ago... not a single overshoot, random jump to an adjacent street, arrow spinning around at a stop light, lost signal, etc. I don't know what the GPS complaints are about as I also own an unbranded i9000, but the SGSII's GPS/Nav performance is VOLUMES better than the i9000 GPS was even with both software and hardware tweaks.
Agreed on the WIFI though, WIFI does seem a bit weaker, but then again, the SGS's WIFI wasn't that great either. The plus side is, I do find the mobile reception much better than the SGS... my house is at the edge of coverage, and I could barely get a signal at times with the SGS. SGSII pulls H+ with no problems at my house.
At the end of the day, you're packing in WIFI, multiple GSM/UTMS, bluetooth bands, GPS all into one very slim device with limited real estate, I figured one of the antennas would be weaker. This time around, it looks like it's WIFI that suffers.

Heh, even I reported that volume is on lower side compared to other phones in that audio thread as soon as I got my SGS2.
But I would still take sgs2 volume over unacceptable stereo output of Desire HD.
Volume is actually sufficient if you have iems with decent isolation. Over ear headphones might be a problem.

1) What you mean by wifi range? I always get full bar anywhere in my house except my backyard with 3 bars.
2) Screen? Don't really care about it. And I think average consumer too dont really care about the tint.
3) GPS locked in 3sec everytime i use it. Never got disconnect or any other problem.
4) Random reboots? Really? I've seen those thread about it but tbh i never encounter this kind of issues.
5) Sound quality is not important to me. A decent one would be enough. Without using earphone, I prefer SGS II than my DHD. But when using earphone DHD is much better. And yes this is very subjective.
After following a few thread about SGS II problem I'm glad that my SGS II doesn't have it. So far i'm happy with my phone and it does whatever I want. In the end of the day there is no perfect phone in this world and everyone wants more and more. Is hard to pleased tech gadget but I think for average consumer this phone is good enough at the moment.

I guess people from first batch was the lucky ones. I'm not having any of the listed issue.

oh maaan, i was about to purchase this phone in the coming month. and was expecting this phone's volume to be powerful just like my omnia hd. but.... it disappointed me, sh......t wat the hell is this. ok is there any one who can confirm whether this problem [ headphone volume] can be fixed by xda xperts .plzz

weird. no problems here, and I had two gs2's, since the first one had a dead pixel, so I exchanged it.

I think I saw in code somewhere in GS2, don't remember where, that it sets limit because of EU(we have laws for max. volume). I think we'll have to look that way, but it seems to be a good reason.
With PowerAmp & EQ "Phone Speaker Loud" it is loud enough for me .

Might get the DHD (Inspire), Some questions.

I have some questions for you dhd owners as they are basiclly the same phone, please be honest.
1.how is the screen quality? With super Amoleds and iphone and atrix's high res screens how does the super LCD hold up? Does it look good in person? Text look good? Is it much better looking then say a 3GS? Very important to me, I want a good screen as I went from the Captivate to the 3G3 (my Captivate broke) and it was a huge downgrade imo.
2.Does the LED light do blue, red, yellow as well or just green and orange?
3.How is the camera quality? Wasnt impressed with the N1's camera and I here the desires was bad as well, this good?
4.How is the phone in person? Build quality? Does it feel REALLY big?
5.Will they get 2.3 officially? Beyond? And will it be supported a lot by xda devs in the future?
6.Music quality is very important to me, is the audio loud and good through headphones?
7.is the phone call quality loud and clear, another problem I had with my N1 and I eventually had to get rid of it because the call quality was too low.
8.Battery, be honest. How is it?
9.And finally how happy are you with your DHD and would you reccomend it to someone at this point in time?

1. The screen quality is very good. (S)AMOLED vs (S)LCD is a thing that is really down to personal preference. I find LCDs better than AMOLEDs because the colors look more realistic. IMO the only thing AMOLEDs are better is the true black. Viewing angles in AMOLEDs are useless. You never look at your phone at that angle. Compared to iPhone 3G screen the DHD is mindblowing (I think 3GS has the same screen as 3G). Even compared to iPhone 4 the DHD holds its ground. Pixel density is lower but the big screen experience makes up for that.
2. Although the LED is tri-color and theoreticaly it can produce any color, AFAIK there is no way to make it flash other than green or amber for now.
3. Camera quality is good, minding it's a HTC's phone. You can check the camera guide in the sticky thread, there are ways you can improve the camera performance and some actual pictures taken with the DHD.
4. Build quality is amaising. It's my first phone with alluminum body and it makes a difference. Some users reported SIM and/or battery cover misalignment, but I have nothing of the sort. Also on mine DHD the camera is slightly misaligned with the body, but it doesn't interfere with its performance. Actualy I had the same issue with my second Touch HD, while the first one I had was perfect. Anyway that doesn't make photos blurry or anything.
The DHD might seem big, but in a few days you'll realise that it's just that all the other phones are small . I got used to it pretty fast. The fact that most of the area is used by the screen makes it's size reasonable. There is no feeling of a waste of space like on the iPhone.
5. I suppose the DHD will get 2.3 from HTC. Not so sure for anything else, but I'm willing to bet this great forum will not leave the DHD behind
6. The stock headphones are crap. With some quality headphones you can get great sound. Also SRS and Dolby make a difference.
7. Again there are user that complain about low in-call volume. I had no such issues, but it seems that if the headspeaker is not aligned with your ear the volume drops significantly.

9. Being my first Android I'm very excited about the DHD. I bought mine in late October and since then I had no reasons to be sorry about my purchase.
Anyway, if you have the chance to try the phone in person, I suggest you do it. Everyone demands different things from his/her phone and it's always best to see how you feel with the phone.

In that case I really think you should try it in a shop and decide for yourself. These are things that can most easily be checked with a live unit. Camera, volume, sound quality require more tweaking and time to evaluate, but screen and size are the two most noticable things in the phone

Yup on the 13th I will go to ATT and check out the inspire, I am kinda worried about the battery life but then again it cant be as bad as the 3GS im using...

Big and more portable then a tablet or Dell streak 5"
The screen is more natural then the s-amoled screens. No hard non-natural colors bumping in to your eyes.

About audio volume, generally, I dont have any problems but playing YouTube video's useually nets me very low/weak volume. I have no idea why but everything else plays loud. It might be an app issue, methinks.

The only thing that really sucks is the mic.

1. Screen quality is great. Text is clear, images look wonderful, video is more than watchable on a screen this size (all depending on the source, of course).
2. I've only ever seen green and orange, but I've never needed any other colour.
3. It's an HTC phone; The camera is an afterthought, really. Autofocus performs well, images are typical for a camera phone really. For a quick snap at a party it's great, if you want photos to remember take a digital compact with you.
4. I found the phone very big to begin with, but got used to it very quickly. A lot of reviewers said it was too big to use one handed, but that's all I ever do now. I have big hands and can reach the screen with minimal adjustment. If you have smaller hands, you may have more of an issue. FWIW, typing even in portrait mode with both thumbs is easy on a screen this size.
5. No idea about Gingerbread officially, but I wouldn't be surprised if we got 3.0 on it too. Should be able to run the improved UI as the DHD has a dedicated graphics chip and capable CPU.
6. I sold my iPod. Enough said.
7. Like many people, I find that you need the phone placed very exactly over your ear to get good volume out of it. I also find that unless the phone is pressed against my cheek, the person on the other end has trouble hearing me. Not a big deal, just needed to adjust how I hold my phone.
8. I'd like more battery life, obviously, but I get a day out of it with moderate use, a weekend with light use.
9. I would absolutely recommend the DHD to anyone who wanted an android phone with a large screen, capable software and hardware, and the money to afford one. I almost sold it to get a Motorola Defy, but I'm glad I didn't.

In my Oppinion the size is not too big. But if you take the DHD than take another Phone, the other one will fell REALLY small!

I am trying to recommend a AT&T phone for my mom, and I am thinking Inspire or atrix. I was leaning toward inspire because it will be available sooner, has a bigger screen, and a higher Megepixel camera. (plus I like my friends EVO)
I know that everybody likes to defend their phone, it is only natural,but please provide some cold hard feedback. There seems to be a lot of not so minor issues with this phone.
problems seem to be mounting from the feedback online:
1. Battery life is bad. every other 4"+ smartphone has a 1500 mah battery, and still have battery problems, so why make it even worse with a 1230 mah?
2. I am hearing the camera sucks. That is just the opposite of my Vibrant I find the pictures and video are incredibly good, and everyone always asks "did you really take that with your phone?" I figured an 8mp camera should be even better than the 5mp on my samsung, am I wrong about that?
3 The Mic sucks? what does this mean? Do people conplain about sound quality on phonecalls?
Dont get me wrong I love HTC build quality as I have had their phones before, but I dont want to buy a phone that I already know has some not so small problems. I also dont want my mom to have to tweak the heck out of the phone to make the battery last a day, or turn the screen down to where she can barely see it, or turn off 3g for goodness sake.
Are the problems popping up on the forums overblown? should I pick up an inspire, or should we wait for the Atrix?

I'm a HTC die hard but I've had more issues with the DHD than any other devices before it.
A few (key) issues...
- Random reboots. Happened today during a call when an appointment alarm sounded off. Sometimes it just reboots when idle..
- Screen freeze - sometimes the device will not reach on touch input. Wait it out or reboot...
- Lag problem. The unofficial "USB fix" with reduced lags significantly, but not 100% on my device
- Bluetooth is slow to connect and sometimes only connects with HS profile (no A2DP). Half the times it's okay though. Also, A2DP disconnects randomly.
- Integration with Google navi removed in FW 1.72. But even with FW 1.32 there were problems - ex. Google Navi failing to lookup adress' searched from car panel.
This being a flagship device I expected a lot more. I still like HTC devices but I honestly cannot recommend the DHD to anyone.

There is something seriously wrong with your phone. For more than 3 months now, I didn't experienced a single random reboot, the only delay I have in touch input is when the phone is installing something and I think that's normal, the only lag issue I had experienced was back in the days when we had no permroot and I had the old version of Visionary (even without temprooting the device). The lag was gone as soon as I deinstalled Visionary, but I turned on USB debugging just in case. I only use BT to connect to my handsfree while driving and when transfering files to/from my laptop and had no problems with that. Don't know about Google navigation because it's not available in Bulgaria, the only flaw in the preinstalled navi app IMO is that it has no landscape mode.
Anyway check what you have installed on your phone and if you have overclocked, reduce the max freq, because the reboots you experience are deffinately not normal nor common.

I'm a HTC die hard but I've had more issues with the DHD than any other devices before it.
A few (key) issues...
- Random reboots. Happened today during a call when an appointment alarm sounded off. Sometimes it just reboots when idle..
- Screen freeze - sometimes the device will not reach on touch input. Wait it out or reboot...
- Lag problem. The unofficial "USB fix" with reduced lags significantly, but not 100% on my device
- Bluetooth is slow to connect and sometimes only connects with HS profile (no A2DP). Half the times it's okay though. Also, A2DP disconnects randomly.
- Integration with Google navi removed in FW 1.72. But even with FW 1.32 there were problems - ex. Google Navi failing to lookup adress' searched from car panel.
This being a flagship device I expected a lot more. I still like HTC devices but I honestly cannot recommend the DHD to anyone.

Well mate you should go to a service center whit your DHD a friend of mine has simular problems and in the first serie s of the DHD is a lot that gives problems he went back whit it and they give him a new one

You do have a faulty phone i believe because i do not have does issues..
As for call phone volume i m on the stock rom and i don't have that kind of issues, weird maybe i put right in the first place i don't know.

1. Screen is fab. My original desire amoled screen wasn't as sharp as dhd and I love it.
2. Size well at first I thought it will be to big but after few days i've got use to it and now holding anything smaller feels weird
3. Build quality well. No problems here really. My SIM cover has maybe 1mm gap but I use barely there protection case and don't pay attention to it.
Aluminium body is great but due to the phone being so thin quite often it slips of my hand but with protective case it makes it slightly thicker and it's just right now...
4. Battery is ok I can easily get day use and it's actually better than original desire
5. Camera well I'm not a photographer but photos look very good to me and I love sense photo enhance feature
6. Sound quality well ring tone could be Lauder and i've not been using my phone as mp3 player.
Voice quality is ok imo

What I dont like about the DHD?
1. The battery cover. That thing is damn hard to open.
2. That excess sealing thing at the right side of the LCD.
3. Volume rocker. Its a little to flush and difficult to use.

My experience with the Galaxy S2 for the last 21 days

Im a new member of the forum (duh!) and I was brought here after searching a couple of things in google and it seems to hit this place more often than any other site, I've been using the Galaxy S2 for the last 21 days and here are my thoughts:
The design of the over all hardware is just premium, phone feels extremely great on the hand and the weight is just amazing! It does not feel plasticy at all as what some review sites say, for what its worth the feel is extremely premium. Tactile response on the buttons and home key is also great!
The screen is great but I see some flaws/technology limitation here and there or maybe my display is just faulty? Why is the left side slightly a bit darker than the right side of the display, its pretty noticeable even upto 50% brightness.
Samsung has advertized this as a 0.1ms response time screen but I do see some ghosting in some apps and also when dropping the notification tray, a friend of mine who has the original Galaxy S says theres no ghosting on the SuperAMOLED
Black levels are INSANELY MINDBLOWINGLY AMAZING!! I cant stress this enough! Being a fan of high end plasma displays, the SAMOLED+ just blows everything out of the water! I have to admit that if your using the phone just before bed time ( when all the lights are off ) you can definitely tell that the screen is powered on when displaying a black image but its extremely great! The lightning is so faint and perfectly uniform!
Performance ( speed ) is really great, coming from a lower end andriod phone the Galaxy S2's performance is just through the roof! Aside from the innate micro-jitters from andriod everything else is on steriods!
I really like how the Samsung UI is made especially the swipe to SMS/Call, its pretty simple yet very effective! Messaging and contacts are pretty straight forward!
GPS accuracy is spot on, I can easily get 10M locked accuracy on ~9 sats and locking speed is like less than 10 seconds!
Battery life is a bit lacking for my usage but hey I cant expect a device with a dualcore and 4.3" screen to last me 24hrs with all the things Im doing, I also have 3G data enabled with some facebook and twitter widgets and some personal email stuff going around, I also use the music player alot, depending on the usage I get about 16-19hrs.
Wifi strength is just average or maybe its just my weak router at home but on the same spot my laptop can get a very solid signal where the S2 loses it from time to time.
Speaker output is very acceptable, nothing really to write about.
Call quality is "just average" as everyone I've called says that my voice is either pretty low or theres a very slight echo.
Over all the phone is good ( not great ) it kinda meets the expectation, Im a little disappointed on the display since I really believed on all the marketing things they have made for both SuperAMOLED and SuperAMOLED+ , I payed about $680 for this phone and I still have a few days left to either return this and get an exchange or a full refund.

Definetly improvements over original galaxy s are noticeable, specialy GPS.
All hardware is mindblowing but sound. Yamaha DAC is a mess, Wolfson kick ass Yamaha DAC.

I've never owned the original Galaxy S but I've read some posts about that, with a decent heaphones the difference is day and night, not too much of an issue for me though but I can understand the gravity of this.

Try one the "praised" Custom-Roms =) I got much more satified since using them, especially battery life improved (still not state-of-the-art, but acceptable).
But I'm also searching for a solution for the poor call-quality. Every second call i have I'm told that people can understand me hardly. Hardware-design failure?

bought the biggest one, you will need an extra back cover but it comes with
the battery 28 euros for a 2750 mAh battery which at least for me by now

I wont be messing with the ROM yet since im still in the grace period for a return, for the battery I dont think ill spend anything more to make the phone thicker or anything I also understand that the 16hrs is acceptable for the usage that I do.

Firstly, nice review Flightless.
Secondly, Caviera, could you please show any reference to your statement. I'm curious to know. AFAIK not so many review site truly measure audio output/quality, except GSMArena but they haven't yet review SGS2. Although in their most recent reviews, for example for the SGS+ they put SGS2 statistics in the same page for us to compare, as you can see below:

I am not very techie, but I can say the numbers do not differ much there. Or does it?

Mine totally disaster with the Galaxy S2 for the last 21 days.
Replaced 4 units within one month due to pink spot (wasn't know that's issue), easily overheating, power button hardware failure, very low mic volume during calls, and camera mechanism noise problems.
Also waited for another one month to get it repaired/exchanged to my 5th unit. Long run disaster, bad experience to own SGS2 in the first place.
Now start to use SGS2, found it really a nice on hand, useful and powerful smartphone.

My experience is that this phone is amazing... however the GPS is not so amazing. Nothing past 10m... at least navigation works with all the tweaks I've applied.

WTF, 1 month to get a new unit ?
thought that would go faster as this is a manufacturers mistake i would assume?
good thing you didnt flash any custom roms or rooted the phone before sending it back then.. unless you did and already have a jig
from first glance the unit worked flawless for me, bought it in the NL, no issues at all except for the battery drain in the original firmware and the 2.3.3 OS
I flashed after a week over to Litening v5 with ninpheta 2.0.5 kernel
mostly U/c to 1000 or 800 mhz with a little bit of under voltage aswell.
but sometimes for show off or heavy games i boost it to 1400 or 1600 MHZ also .
with a little U/V and phone is fast and stable as a Rolls Royce Phantom <)
Phone gets a bit heated when it is under heavy use or when charging,
but at least my personal belief is that the reason for this happening
is simply because there is not a metall etc bezel around this phone
like it would for example be on an iphone, surely all that metal must spread out the heat to even it out??
Phone was also heating up under stock rom with heavy use so or charging so
i believe that it is not really heating up to much
but because of the bezel thing mentioned above it feels a lot hotter.
what do you guys think?

Yes, over one month at retailer shop where i bought my SGS2 in UK. I have no ideal why they need more than a month to diagnose the phone (checked online with diagnose status). Btw, problem was found on original unrooted preloaded fw and did root the phone to solve the problem, unfortunately it can't be solved. And it's not jigged. That time was suspect hardware problems then just send it for service without thinking too much. It's still under warranty anyway. As a result they replaced another new unit for me.
Cross-fingers. Hope no more problems on my current SGS2.

I also had to wait for 30days on my 3rd replacement but I was able to use the phone till then, now processing another replacement since it has yet another defect.. waiting time is another 30days for approval.

As for wifi, even with barely any signal, i've always hit the max speed of my bandwidth during the speed test

I also realize that my SGS2 WiFi signal always at very low bar (one bar), where placed beside my laptop (full bar). And distance to WiFi router only about 5 meter away. Is it something wrong with the SGS2 WiFi module or just another software problem again. Don't tell it's hardware problem again.

Sounds like something is wrong with the actual transmitter, wireless card or what to call it, my wifi on a real ****ty sweex router has good strength and I can even be in the basement of our complex and still have decent strength, I live on the third floor so the basement is pretty far away, in the house everywhere I have full strength,.

I think you had the same problem that my brother had with his HTC sensation! He went through 4 phones overheating, and running supper slow, I believe that you got your hands on a batch of bad phones

then it could be something to do with WiFi frequency channel. i should tweak around and see how is it.

Any known issues with the Atrix?

Hi,
I'm considering upgrading my captivate to atrix and I wanted to know if there are any known issues?
I'll explain what I mean:
My first android phone was Xperia X10. Little did I know, the phone was awesome overall but the battery barely lasted a day and all the sony phones had locked bootloaders which means almost no customization in ROMs and pretty bad performance and battery life.
After that I moved to my Capty.
With all the benefits of the remarkable amoled screen, the capty has some severe GPS issues.
By severe I mean not working at all.
Not only that but I switched about 11 or so ROMs until I found one that's mostly functioning. (still without GPS).
All these unsatisfying experiences made me even consider going back to iProducts... And I would NEVER do that again.
What I want to know is not how remarkable Atrix is, trust me I've read enough praises.
I need you to tell me what do you dislike about the phone. Whether it's the slow updates from moto, the build quality, signal quality, GPS, annoying browser, or any other thing that doesn't work or displeases you in any way.
Sorry for this wall of text, I wouldn't want another disappointment.

To skip what I love about it and move straight to what I do not:
- I'm not a huge fan of the Pentile display... though if you're coming from a Captivate then that's not a downgrade.
- Motorola are definitely slow with software updates (Gingerbread has not even landed in Europe yet). Though of course Cyanogenmod is nearly complete so who really cares?
- I used to have a Galaxy S and I know they hardware accelerated the web browser. I do miss that (assuming Sammy did the same with the Captivate). Having said that, I use Opera these days and that's pretty smooth anyway. And of course, when we get ICS they should all get hardware acceleration.
- The battery life is OK, but I just think it should be better with the 1930mAh battery.
- Why did they make the power button so awkward to use?!
The hardware seems pretty bullet proof to me - I'm not aware of anything that's actually broken like the Galaxy S line of GPS woes. When it's coupled with a completely stable Cyanogenmod build we should be good to go.

I get random reboots, failed to initiate camera, failed to initiate fingerprint scanner, and sometimes the display takes a minute to turn on, even though I can hear the sound of the fp scanner unlocking the display. This is usually a sign that the phone is going to reboot itself soon.

I consider motoblur to be a problem.
With the phone itself, none for me (power user) or my father (casual). Had them since shortly after public release.
Definitely have not experienced any of the above posters issues. If you are on a 100% stock system then your phone needs to be sent in. If its custom, reconsider your setup. A stock atrix should not have those issues.

excellent GPS, brighter screen, no burn ins.
Only problem I have with it is that the screen at random times can be too sensitive to touch and the fact that you cant hold it down for longer than 15 seconds

Lol. what's the deal with the 15 second rule?
And so far it sounds quite like the thing I'm looking for.
One more question though. I really want the laptop dock, do custom ROMs work with it? How does it work in general?

15 second rule is Motorola's aytempt fo prevent a water drop causing touch screen failure.
Webtop works with most cuatom ROMs just not CM.

I was about to get an S2 but the xda developers never cease to make this one heck of a phone. My phone was solid from day one and so make sure that your phone is solid hardware wise while it's still under warranty. The only bad experiences I've come accross were from devices with hardware issues. With all of the custom roms and development on this phone i think this phone will be a worthy contender for a while. I gotta say that although the recent motorola gingerbread update is a huge improvement, this device is amazing with a custom rom. There are roms out there for every need so read and review carefully. I think the main differences in regards to what you will want to customize the phone with will hinge on the camera/camcorder
function and how much Blur functionality you need to have.

My fp scanner doesn't make any sounds, it vibrates couple times and it's pretty responsive. I got the phone since day one and don't have any of those problems.

I mean the unlocking sound. That click that occurs when you successfully unlock the phone. I get the sound, but the display stays off.

The call quality could be a little better. I get a lot of huhs and whats on the other side of the phone.

Having came from a captivate I have to say my only real issue with this phone is MOTOBLUR. I still have nightmares about it from when I was using the BACKFLIP (I love how moto puts their products in all caps). Its no where as near as bad on the ATRIX though. Custom launchers took away my wowes. Having the power/unlock button in the middle and slightly inlaid at the top of the phone was a big adjustment but unlocking my phone with a swipe of my finger stopped me from thinking about it too much. I've had a couple random reboots but they all seem to come from me overheating the phone. (My ATRIX is good about being on the charger and finding it's way under clothes or a blanket so this seams to be more me messing up rather then the phone). Im coming up on my one month ann. Of having the ATRIX and not once have I felt the need to go back to my captivate

atrix is quite a decent phone overall, but do have a few flaws
its kinda heavy, holding atrix in one hand and sg2 on the other, atrix feels like a brick...
battery dont last as long as suggested, i came from zte blade, used to last me a day and a half, but atrix last me just a day even with it 1930mah battery. (and alarm manager keeping the phone awake seems to be a common problem)
but other than that, its a pretty good phone, it will be even better when the fingerprint scanner is compatible with cm7

Well I wasn't very happy from day 1 but it's a good phone. Now after few months I have to send for repairs as the digitizer is f**** up. If I could go back in time I wouldn't go for the atrix. I guess I love sense ui too much and asop or blur is too ugly for me.

I've had the phone for almost a week now. It's going to be "keep" instead of "return" for me, but just barely. I'm coming from a Samsung Galaxy S i9000 that was running on Darky's ROM Extreme Edition.
What I don't like:
1. The screen. Call me spoiled by the blacks and brightness of the SAMOLED of Samsung.
2. For a Dual Core phone, it sure is sluggish. Well at least compared to the SGS2. I can't believe that it's almost running, if not slower, than my Galaxy S.
3. Still on 2.2.2 (at least in the UK). We're already talking about Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS) and there's still no 2.3.5 (even 2.3.4!) in sight.
4. Like the SGS, it won't play eAAC+ encoded music (you know, the 64kbps encoded stuff that sound like they're 160kbps MP3's, it was so great).
5. Screen sensitivity. Not really as fluid as the SGS. I think this may be down to me just used to the Samsung timing on the screen.
What I like about it:
1. The screen. Love the resolution! It makes a difference, and I think this was one of its saving grace for me keeping the phone.
2. Battery life. Significantly better than the SGS, and this is with all my 12 email accounts on PUSH and everything.
3. The build! I like its slightly heavy build. I won't buy a phone without Gorilla Glass ever again. My previous SGS was thrown so many times (at full force) by my kid and it still rocks! My wife has it now.
4. Fingerprint scanner. Not perfect, but why can't all phone have this?! It is just so logical.
5. The speaker on this phone is nice, I can listen to rock music and hear a lot more things than my SGS.

Please Motorola, give us 2.3.4/2.3.5 already! Or at least dangle a carrot in front of us (tell us when!).

Yeah, it's true. I just additionally emphasise not only the GPS but also all other radio functions such as gsm signal, wifi, bluetooth work excellent. My AT&T Atrix is the best phone which has nearly all-sided pros. I've been used.
There is only one weak-point (though this depends on the individual view of diffetent user) is the pentile screen technology. Such a thing is well known as an advanced technology which offers the high brightness and the high contrast of the screen with noticeable power save. But in other side, it includes the disavantage that is also well known as an issue, it's the "pixel-grains" phenomenon when you look closely and deeply on some small icon eg. clock, signal bars icon... But with many people, this issue is acceptable.
Only problem I have with it is that the screen at random times can be too sensitive to touch and the fact that you cant hold it down for longer than 15 seconds

4. Like the SGS, it won't play eAAC+ encoded music (you know, the 64kbps encoded stuff that sound like they're 160kbps MP3's, it was so great).
5. Screen sensitivity. Not really as fluid as the SGS. I think this may be down to me just used to the Samsung timing on the screen.
What I like about it:
1. The screen. Love the resolution! It makes a difference, and I think this was one of its saving grace for me keeping the phone.
2. Battery life. Significantly better than the SGS, and this is with all my 12 email accounts on PUSH and everything.
3. The build! I like its slightly heavy build. I won't buy a phone without Gorilla Glass ever again. My previous SGS was thrown so many times (at full force) by my kid and it still rocks! My wife has it now.
4. Fingerprint scanner. Not perfect, but why can't all phone have this?! It is just so logical.
5. The speaker on this phone is nice, I can listen to rock music and hear a lot more things than my SGS.

After I have rully charged my phone, I will endeavour to get the latest CM7 on it sir. A pity about the fingerprint scanner, but not a dealbreaker for me.
Also, found out that because this is running a Tegra 2 processor, it's very picky with media files. Can't seem to play a lot of the MP4/MKV files I use to play easily with the SGS.

Yes, I would say the biggest problem with the Atrix is movie codec support. Coming from a Captivate myself I envisioned downloading a nice 720p movie, tossing it on the phone and playing it on my bigscreen. Not so. Hardware accelerated codecs are awful, it'll basically playback SD DIVX and H.264 everything else requires transcoding. Personally I think this is why Android tablets lag so far behind the iPad, what use is a consumption device if you can't consume media?
I would recommend any Motorola with the OMAP dual core and non pentile display such as the Bionic or Atrix 2.

Buying the Nexus 4...?

I currently have the Galaxy Nexus and looking to replace it with the Nexus 4. I have tried the phone several times in shops, read reviews and seen the hundreds of videos on Youtube and have noticed some negative things that might affect my purchase like:
1. Short battery life - even at 2100mAh and with minimal usage it still doesn't quite last for a whole day even on standby.
2. A not-so sharp screen - using this so-called "grey screen" test it was shown to be weaker than the previous-gen Galaxy Nexus
3. Wifi bugs - again when the phone is held in a specific way the wifi signal becomes affected
4. Muffled incoming calls
5. Frequency distortions when a headphone is connected
6. Weak & tiny speakers sound (just like Galaxy Nexus)
7. Very poor speaker grill placement
8. An "average" camera photos
Aside from the hardware issue has the other issues been resolved via software updates? And is Google aware of these issues?
We all know the wonderful and powerful specs (and OS) the Nexus 4 has but these issues seems to be on my head.
Please advice. Thanks.

Just my two cents:
1. Battery life is way better then my old HTC Sensation (like...i needed a spare battery for it if i had a long day at uni whereas my nexus last for a whole day of heavy use)
2. The screen is not AWESOME in stock, but it's pretty darn good. A custom kernel on the other hand makes it much much better then anything you have seen, trust me.
3. Wi-Fi working without issues here as well. I'm sure you're referring to the "Deathgrip" issue which mostsmartphones have...don't worry about it too much. You can always hold it in a different way if you find your wi-fi signal level unacceptable
4. Incoming call quality is top notch...didn't notice any problems. The earpiece is really loud even! I use it at minimum volume!
5. Didn't notice that either.
6. It's not too bad. There are audio mods which improve the volume and sound quality across the board (this applies to 5,6,7)

8. The camera is much much better then the one in my old HTC Sensation. And i mean...MUCH BETTER!

It doesn't appear that you want to buy the N4. That's fine, you've done your homework and came to a smart decision. But if you did as much research on the Galaxy Nexus you would have found similar complaints about it and would not now own it.

Solution for those problems:
Downloadnflash paranoid android or cm or just stick with stock.
Then flash Francos kernel, do some UVing and there you go. Use BBS(better battery stats) to find what's causing your drain if you ever do buy a nexus 4.

Well, i did my homework when it comes to reviews online from well-known websites (Amazon UK, CNET, GSM arena, etc.) but i haven't decided if the Nexus 4 is NOT for me or not. I am merely expressing my views on what i read and what i read or seen on video reviews are always there, always (almost) consistent and always the same problems.
Sure it might be a factory defect or a very select few but still it causes me to do some thinking.
Why is the "deathgrip" issues still there regardless of what phone you have?
I usually (and most of the times) hold the phone in my left hand. And that basically covers the speaker grill at the back. It's not like ALL THE TIME and not all the time i'm expecting a phone call whilst i'm holding my phone with my left hand. I just think it's a bad place to place the speaker grill.
Has anyone actually tried the "grey screen test" for the screen to check for any inconsistencies or broken pixels or something?

By 9pm the battery is down to 30% and it goes downhill from there. So with that in mind i still think 2100mAh is not enough.
Regarding the camera photos quality...well i'm not into ROM's or MODs etc. I want mine the stock Android. But if anyone has anything in mind like apps to improve/tweak the camera and improve the battery life then i would greatly appreciate it.
Does the Nexus 4 have "HD voice"? And does it have some kind of noise cancellation when hearing from the earpiece or making a phone call so it stays clear even if your in a noisy environment?

Agreed. Awful speaker placement, which isn't helped at all by the fact that the back is completely flat.

I haven't but I can tell you from simple usage that there's nothing wrong with the screen. A custom kernel definitely helps a lot, but if you leave it as stock you'll still be happy.

This was an issue I was worried about before getting my phone too, but my experience with it so far has been great.

I don't think there's any HD voice, but there is a noise cancelling mic on the top. Either that, or my phone has a random hole in it

Since you haven't numbered it this time, I just answered in red

With 4.2.1 stock, it was too aggressive when it came to onlining cores so you'd end up with 4 online cores when reading Facebook lol. Which is cool for project butter, but isn't too battery efficient. Even if you don't root it, 4.2.2 is better when it comes to stuff like that, so battery life is definitely not like it used to be. Most reviews are based on 4.2.1, so...
The only other phone I'd trade this nexus for is lumia 920, but I don't want an unlocked version and T-Mobile doesn't have it. The reason I'd take that is due to me loving Xbox music so much.
Even new phones coming out, yea, they are pretty beefy but don't offer stock android experience. To me, I always found touch wiz laggy and ugly. Sense ui was decent, but too buggy and updates never came. Point is, I personally love stock android, it feels so smooth, even if benchmarks don't reflect it. If you like stock, definitely the phone to go with.
Sound quality is great, noise canceling is good. I used to have gs3 and there were a lot more times when people had issues hearing me when it was windy.
Camera is good, it isn't lumia 920 type camera, but it does take good pictures, flash is pretty good too. I found galaxy nexus camera to be crap, I'm happy with this one.
I dunno what carrier you plan on using, but connectivity is much better for me then galaxy nexus. Not only does it support hspa42, which literally gives me 22mbps vs 10mbs I used to get, but it stays connected to hspa better. But, it still isn't as good as some other phones still because I know that couple of times I'd get stuck on edge when I shouldn't.
I like the way this touchscreen is too, seems more responsive than gnexus was.

I am not a fan of custom kernels, rooting or CM ROM's and i would prefer the "normal" updates here & there by Google/LG.
If there is an app to somehow (not magically but if it were then the better) make the speakers louder, make the photos more saturated/sharper/more contrast and further improve the battery life (instead of the usual turning off the GPS, bluetooth, brightness, etc.) then i would be happy with.

Speaker volume is great, it's just the quality that you may need to worry about

I'll answer your questions from what I've experienced.
1.Not sure what you've been doing, but I've been getting 15+ hours and I'm only down to 47%. I use the internet now and then, and play games alot during school.
2. I'm not sure what you're talking about, but it's still a really good screen. I'm not one to be picky of the screen, but i'm happy with it. Only thing I wish was if the colors were more true, but hey, it's still a really really good phone. One of the best, if not the best phone in market.
3. That's never happened to me. No matter which way I hold it, I still get good wifi wherever I am.
4. Muffled calls? That's never happened to me. I can clearly hear the person on the other end all the time.
5. Never even heard of this before. The only thing I can think of causing this would be having an app that wasn't fully compatible with the software/rom on your phone.
6. Coming from the mytouch 4g, the speaker on this phone is really an upgrade. Although it isn't the best on the market, its still pretty loud and you can make it louder if you want with a mod like Eizo.
7. No comment on this, it's the design of the phone. If you let the placement of something ruin your chance of having a good phone, i'm sorry ,but that's ridiculous.
8. Camera photo quality for me is awesome. With the new HDR function android camera's, it makes pictures just as high quality as iphone pictures. Only thing that annoys me is the speed of the camera when HDR is activated. It has to take 3 pictures and blends them together to create one high res picture, but the outcome is worth it.
I'm not one to go looking for problems, but all the problems that have happened to me, they've all been solved with updates for the ROM i'm using, or i just find a solution myself to solve the problem. None the less, a lot of the problems people face can be solved by using the search bar and looking for a solution, or with an update to the software or ROM on your phone.
Once again, this is all from my perspective. Others might have a different opinion on this. In the end, this is still an amazing phone. Better than the iPhone IMO (except the camera.) It's your choice if you want to get this compared to the other phones in the market.

I think there are some apps in the app market that can do that. Volume + , or volume boost, just search volume booster or something.

I'm actually choosing between the Nexus 4 and the slightly older Optimus 4X HD which was made by LG (same as the N4) and has been plagued by almost the same issues especially that LG is notoriously known for very poor customer support and very slow updates. but the Optimus itself is an amazingly-specced phone.
No contest?
A good 2nd choice for the Nexus 4 you think?

My advice: Get Nexus 4. I currently own an Optimus 4X HD, despite it's great specs, I must say this phone is a let down.
Why you shouldn't get an O4X:
1. Battery performance super sucks. I managed only to get 12 hours with light usage (I mean, LIGHT)
2. Tegra chipset isn't really compatible with some games. I tried NFS, Nova and it's laggy
3. Update support is extremely poor. I'm still stuck with 4.0.3 and JB update is still indefinite to arrive
Browse O4X thread and see for yourself how many O4X users are unhappy with their handsets.
So, get a N4 and live a happy life.

The specs of the 4X HD looked great until I saw the words 'Tegra 3' on GSMarena. You'll be very frustrated with the performance of the Tegra 3, it's quite an awful chipset. Sure, there are tonnes of Tegra optimised apps, but the fact of the matter is that my friend's One X on JB still lags due to the Tegra 3. Even relatively light games such as Super Hexagon (you should try it out if you haven't) and Temple Run 2 (I know it isn't that light but for a phone of this gen it shouldn't be a problem) lag on it.

Then i have to say that the nexus is not the device for you. The coolest thing bout nexus devices is that they are really easy to mod and customize. If you don't plan on doing that, there's no point in getting a nexus device. However, the N4 has the added bonus of being cheap but it still might not be enough for some users (yourself included apparently)

The reason why i'm not a fan of custom kernels and ROMs is maybe perhaps i haven't done it before and i might further "damage" the phone's OS and i might not be able to revert the OS back to its factory settings.
I'm still quite happy with JB on my Galaxy Nexus. The stock version of JB is very slick and i would imagine how even more smoother it is on the Nexus 4.
So far the complaints of the O4XHD has been kind of a viscious circle. Lag has been the word for today. And the fact that it has no JB makes it even more frustrating. I have just emailed LG and their reply re: my list of issues is that there has "been no known issue" with the said phone and they have no word as to when JB is incoming.
The Nexus 4 has still its flaws i think and that doesn't mean it is that good. But now, i'm more geared toward this phone as a "safe" choice rather than the O4XHD.

Who wants to hear about the negatives? If you like the phone then get it. If you dont like the phone then dont get it. Each phone will have different negatives per user. The guy above me dosent like the lockscreen button... but I may love it. Each negative (aside from visual/hardware defects) are going to be subjective.
My negative: no option for wireless charging.

Probably best nipping over to the Samsung forums for a better researched and comprehensive list to be honest. There's a few of them in here which I think is testament to our friendliness, we welcome anybody, even though they are less fortunate than ourselves .
Honest answer? Coupla minor niggles with gaps and bit of annoyance with the sensitivity of the back & home buttons for some but the awesomeness of the phone and recent 1.29 update seem to have cured these. Get one and enjoy it... jeez, I ought to be on commission!

It's screen is too bright until you flash a auto brightness mod for low light. The mic is almost to sensitive for video recording betting that is why we are seeing some problems with hiss in calls and videos. HTC in their infinte wisdom decided we only needed two buttons LIKE WTF!!! We can fix soon as it has been confirmed that the HTC logo will act as whatever we tell it to The camera isn't perfect yet which I will bet will take quite a few months of software updates (not saying it's bad just expect it to get much better) It will run hot no way around this but a case as aluminum is a excellent heat conductor. Battery life isn't like the end all be all it does not last 5 days or even 20 hours with the screen on

Only wish the lowest volume could be a little lower! aside from the minor niggles mentioned earlier, best phone by a long shot for me so far. I have used Apple products through work in the past and am currently running a work Blackberry too but this is absolutely my phone of choice for personal use. No need to apologize . .. I wanted to buy the One for my Brother so just wanted to know more about the phone ... Just wanted to know about the various issues people have been talking about ie. the gaps , crackling sound in the speakers , heat issues etc... I really hope that the HTC One sells really well .... Its one of the best Phones ever made... Period.

I find that the back and home buttons are not sensitive enough.

One that sticks out for me and it's really more with Sense 5 than the phone is on the lock screen the play/pause button is too big. Often when I want to go to the next track I'll hit that by accident instead. That and the phone heating up a bit sometimes are so far my two minor gripes.

I am coming from an SGSII running the latest AOKP. Here are a few of the annoyances I've noticed.
- Slow charging compared to most phones
- The large size makes hitting the lock button somewhat awkward at times. I much preferred the right side lock, left side volume of the SGSII.
- Vibrates too hard. I know this might sound like a strange criticism but its annoying when you're in class and your phone sounds like it's about to rattle off of the desk. Hoping there will be a mod in the near future to reduce intensity.
- The charging light, when green, is actually pretty ****ing annoying to look at. It's behind the speaker on top and is a small LED. It's very very bright when you look at it directly and annoying when you're trying to use your phone and charge it at the same time.
There are many minor things with Sense UI compared to AOKP, but that isn't really a fair criticism when I knew what I was getting into. There are very few bugs though, and it's nice coming from a ROM where there were always a few lurking issues that couldn't be fixed without source. Still very happy with the phone though.

Vibrates too hard? Then it's perfect for me. I've lost count on how many calls I've missed when I couldn't feel Xperia S vibrating in my pocket.

Give it some time.... after the initial scramble to get the first Ones by the fanboys, the general masses will come out in larger numbers to buy the phone, and they won't be so loving and biased.
So.. In a couple of months, we will see how great or not great this phone is as more unbiased temperaments make their opinions known.
