I was lucky enough to receive a GT 10.1 from Google I/O, however when I do not use it for some amount of time, it behaves as if it shut down. Pressing the power button for about 10s will cause it to boot normally. The time needed for this to happen is the range of a few hours, I mainly notice it overnight. Has anyone else had this problem?
It's happened once on mine. There's a thread about it on the forum. I think most users are having to hard cycle the power by holding down the power button for about 10+ seconds. Hopefilly its another pre release oddity that gets solved with a software update.
I haven't experienced that in mine. Hopefully it somehow gets fixed.

I think it has happened two or three times on mine. I did root it and froze some of the samsung apps with titanium backup. I restored them thinking that might help. At any rate, I'm hoping that the 3.1 update will fix these issues.
Mine isn' t rooted, so i don't think that's the issue.

There seems to be a laundry list of stuff I'm finding, this problem included. I hope that 3.1 update is indeed in "a few weeks" like they said in the keynote and doesnt turn into months. If the I/O GT-P7510 was a consumer facing product we'd all be reading stories about high return rates by now.

Yeah, this has happened to me many times. The "sleep" mode apparently turns the device off completely. Ugh.

I have tried looking at the logcat but it doesn't seem to have any entries from before I powered it on from sleep (at least none that show up in DDMS in Eclipse). Perhaps someone more knowledgeable can try to get some info about the device during a long idle period.

Try leaving it plugged in to your computer with DDMS running overnight. That should preserve the log even after it freezes. Be sure to unplug it from the computer before rebooting the tablet or it might clear the log upon boot.

It has to be. Didn't google say they were forcing OEMs and carriers to update?
I've noticed the same issue as well, probably 4 or 5 times. I'm going to leave it plugged into my computer to night to see the logcat file.
The power issues are becoming more frequent. In the past two days I have heard two spontaneous reboots from my GT 10.1, with perhaps others that have gone unnoticed.
So i left it plugged in to logcat last night, and there was no shutdown. It looks like mine only turns off when charging via power outlet.
Just adding that I'm not having any issues with crashing or reboots at all with my IO 10.1. Maybe I'm in the minority but my Sammy has been flawless since the first boot. My only complaint is that it think I'm in the U.K so my clock is always off (heard there's an app to fix that but too lazy to deal with it at the moment).
I will watch for the charging bug and see if I can replicate it.
I Had this issue a lot with my Xoom and my transformer. That was o of the biggest reasons that I returned them. It's looking like it's a honeycomb issue.
Well when they went over that whole "forcing" of carries to update in the press only event after the keynote it came out that its a goal more of a requirement. So don't hold your breath. It surely does not mean that when the Nexus devices get a new build of Android that your average skinned carrier phone will the next day.

Mines powering off 4-5 times a day and I have seen a few reboots. I must say its not impressing me at the moment seeing I was ready to launch my Xperia x10 out the window for rebooting for no reason.
SO my tab shut down again last night. So I just left it didn't need it on Saturday just too busy. I turn it on tonight and to my amazement the battery is at 24% from nearly full. It sorta confirmed my suspicions the GT isnt shutting down its locking up with the screen off. Has anyone else noticed this or suspected it.

I always suspected it was locked up with the screen off because if it was shut down, it wouldn't need a super long press to power on again.
I have the Vodafone 10.1v and it has the same issue. I have only ever seen it when connected to my PC though.

not sure if I can help in the shutdown problem.
But regarding the booting/power on thing.... that's how we ALL turns our on....it required a 3-4 seconds holding in the power button
I believe the tablet has an auto shutoff that kicks in after 4-5 hours

Not true. I've never experienced this on my A500. The last time it was powered off was when I installed the update, and prior to that it was powered off by me a day or two after it was purchased. I've never come back to the device and had it completely off for no apparent reason.
I use a password login, I keep USB debugging turned on and my wifi is set on when the screen is on, off when not. I charge it every day during the day, and use it at least 2 hours total per day. I have a 32 GB MicroSD card installed.
It sits by my bed with the screen off, and not plugged in at least 9 to 10 hours every night, and it's the first thing I grab when I wake up to check my email accounts and news.
So, trust me, I'd notice if it turned itself off randomly...
I wonder if it's either a software conflict with some people's tablets or if there's a run of bad tablets out there?

I could give you a nightmare story of my Asus EEE netbook...
About 2 weeks before the warranty expired the left mouse button stopped working. I sent a support request through their site and it took them several days to respond. They responded with some initial troubleshooting issues. I sent back that it was definitely hardware and the button didn't even feel right. They took another few days to respond and told me to call the 800 #.
The 800# people had me email them a copy of my sales receipt, which I did. They waited until a day after my warranty expired and told me my warranty was expired and they wouldn't do anything for me.
I tried appealing and everyone ignored me. I'll never buy another Asus product. Previously I purchased around 30 of their motherboards a year for work, not anymore.
That's why I bought the Acer - didn't even have to think twice about it.
I also encounter the shut-down issue. It seems to occur after long periods of charging (say charging overnight). I've had a similar issue with certain ROMs on my Captivate - when the phone would hit 100% while charging it would shut down.
It's a bit annoying, but hasn't been a big issue. If my tablet has been sitting on a charger for 4+ hours it's usually because I don't have an immediate need for it.
Mine also turns off overnight after the update. Hope with next update it works properly and with 3.1.

i never had any problems before but the last 4 days it shut off twice and I notice that it did only after I had it chargin. Is it a really big problem guys? Not for me it takes what 20-25 secs to boot up? I can deal with it till 3.1 rolls out so as long as it doesn't shut off daily while I'm using it idc.

just throwing in a me too... just bought my iconia yesterday after returning a galaxy tab 10 (which is THE sexiest tablet ever, but I really needed SD and USB w/o an adapter)... the weird part is everyone else here ties it to charging but mine just did it ten minutes ago and its been off the charger for 12 hours. I also have trouble with the web browser crashing and text selection sometimes is just broken... 3.1 can't come fast enough, and having owned a galaxy tab 10 for a day I can attest that 3.1 is quite a bit better.
i've had mine for nearly a month now, and it's only just started shutting down automatically last night. Happened a few times consecutively last night, and it's happened again about 10minutes ago when i just went to use it it was off, and i distinctly remember it still being on after i took it off charge this morning and put it in my bag.
Starting to become a little annoying especially if it continues to get worse.
Browsers shutting down for some sites. Java problem ?
+ 1
Its meanwhile a month ago since the last posting. Is a solution found ?
I use Dolphin 6.0.0 on Android 3.01 1.141.01 and for month's it worked perfect.
Today, it starts shutting down for some sites and indeed switching off java solves the problem. Same for stock browser. Its annoying that this happens without a clear trigger because it indicates an unstable system !
edit: sorry, wrong thread
just picked mine up yesterday and encountered this last night. Which is especially annoying since it was halfway through downloading the 350MB update when I went to bed.

So update to 3.1 - the official version has been out for over a month now, it is a lot more stable then 3.01 in my experience when it comes to web browsing. Just copy the correct update.zip to microsd, reboot with top vol rocker/power held, you got 3.1 without waiting for Acer to push ota to you.
Ok, random reboots are gone...now it's just sleep of death.
Every. Damn. Morning.
No kidding...every single day, the thing has shut itself off and drained it's battery completely..TABLET AND DOCK mind you, for about a week now. I can't set it down and close the lid..I feel like I'm using paul burton's Spark ROM. I am actually about to RMA this thing myself because of this......
It's getting very hot on recharge from completely dead, and it's done it so many times now I fear it's very likely to have damaged the life of my battery as an end-user..
Add to this..dust INSIDE my camera lens, dead pixels, and half-working microSD slot (the card has to be inserted JUST SO..in order to be recognized).
I want a new device..I'm done playing around with this defective toy, I want a real workhorse that I can depend on, I need it for my projects. Sadly, I have a SBK1 too...
Had only a few reboots a week on all ICS stock, Revolver, Revolution and CM9 roms. No battery drain. I do not have a dock.
Since I flashed CM9 Megatron a few weeks ago, I experienced no reboots at all, except a few lockups on Home Screen. Since Megatron 1.0.3 based on ICS 4.0.4 and the latest guevor kernel test13, it's running smooth as butter with great battery life and overclocked to 1.4GHz.
Does the battery drain like that when it is not docked?
With all those issues, you should RMA. Although when you get the device back it will probably still have sleep of death (and maybe random reboots).

In another thread, it was mentioned that the ICS update defaults the TF101 to have the setting "stay awake - screen will never sleep while charging" enabled, no matter whether it looks like there's a checkmark on that setting or not. When the tablet is docked, it is considered as "charging" and therefore it will stay awake and drain the tablet battery and the dock battery. The fix is to manually toggle the checkmark on and off on that setting, whether there looks like there is a checkmark there or not. That's why I asked whether or not the battery drains when undocked.
Strangely I didn't get a second update yet

The 'fix' was reported to be simply unchecking and checking the box (it's toggle is set to on, but the actual feature is disabled until you do this). I had previously done this, and forgotten about it..but I will go check again, though I am pretty sure that my CWM backup was made well after my settings were adjusted like this, and the backup I restored and am using now did not previously crash like this.
EDIT: Also, once the dock is drained to 3% it is supposed to stop 'charging' so it *should* not result in draining the tablet's battery completely (from full charge on both units however, with screen off, awake or asleep, I would think I could get more than 8-10 hours battery life without draining both batteries to 0%..yes, 0%. This is what scares me that the batteries have been damaged..after 5-8 times that it has overdischarged now..)
Experiencing the exact same issues here
SODs and complete battery drain when supposedly off. My tab is also permanently connected to keyboard.
Getting very frustrated now.
I've using Revolver ROMs for a long time now and these issues only occured after flashing the ICS betas. It had gotten so bad that I went back to Honeycomb but the SODs and battery drain persisted even then.
Tonight I flashed the newly released Revolver RC1 rom in hope that the issues would be fixed but unfortunately I've had a random reboot already
Not sure where to go now as the stock Asus rom has these issues as well I believe. iPad anyone?
Rant over and many thanks to all the devs for their unselfish work.
Jake
Well, my screen keeps coming on. That seems to be the problem. At random while docked, it just comes on. I look at the dock when it's closed and see it's on..so I open it and manually turn it off (the screen not the device) and leave it open..a few minutes later, there it is again, on..for no reason.
This is my likely culprit, and it's really pissing me off. I am on a stock ROM, so unless this is guevor's kernel's fault, it's Asus', I'm leaning towards Asus.
However judging from some of the responses, it would seem users are having this without using guevor's kernel..so there goes that option.
Can anyone confirm they are getting this issue with the stock kernel?

Came here to consider rooting my tablet to fix similar issues, and you all are having the same issues. I am NOT rooted, tablet keeps going into some sort of "deep sleep" (that's what a developer friend called it). Sometimes the battery is draining to nothing, sometimes not. Although, once it goes into this sleep mode, it's near impossible to get back out and always requires a reboot.
PLUS the constant rebooting for no reason, right in the middle of work. This thing's been super buggy since the ICS update, ASUS is absolutely no help (worst service I've experienced in years)...wish I had never installed it. NOTHING about the update is worth all this headache...
According to my research, it's a known issue...meaning ASUS knows it's a problem and are supposedly working on it. I kept reading about another OTA update that was supposed to fix some of these issues last week, but haven't seen anything yet.

Not exactly a product-wide issue. For whatever reason, some Transformers, like mine, do not have the same problems or not nearly to the same extent. I have had 300+ hour uptimes (2 weeks) with this iteration of ICS, though, when it does go down, I suspect it might be when I choose to use Flash in a browser. I haven't really looked into it. You are also mixing up issues. This particular issue is with dock owners. Toggling the "stay awake" setting may or may not help in this case. I don't have a dock, so I don't know. Some say it did help.
The issue you are describing is separate and has a workaround and a possible fix posted.
Workaround: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1567795
Possible fix: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1518552
ASUS might have already resolved the problem in their TF101G firmware, but I don't know why they haven't released a patch yet for TF101.
As many have pointed out in other threads, it's not possible to extrapolate how many are affected by your issue because this is a support forum that pops up high in the Google rankings. Many people end up here when looking for support for problems. Therefore the population here is naturally going to be disproportionately high in people having problems. I myself ended up on XDA because of an issue with the Lenovo K1 tablet.

Its a pos and i am getting rid of mine. I shouldn't have to root or install an app for this **** to work. Complete and utter fail.
Update - After 2 months I couldn't take it any more so I sold it and actually got a rating of "good". The other solution involved a sledge hammer. I can't believe they didn't notice the 1 hour battery life. More proof that quality control worldwide is going down hill. Apologies to who ever gets mine as a refurbished unit or parts from it.

Battery Life from 100% to 0%
ICS .11 & .17 - 6 to 8 minutes (Pic 1)

ICS .24 - 50 to 65 minutes (Pic 11)
Bug count
RR & Boot Loop - once on may 14th after 2 months on ICS
Battery meter stuck at 100% - 4 times
Irregular charge and discharge cycles - lost count
Battery meter continues to go up a few % after charger is unplugged - lost count
Screen flickered - 8 times
Screen unresponsive / no input - 11 times
No sound what so ever - once
Irregular charging ping sound - lost count
ICS .24 - Finally got over 1 whole hour of battery life from a full charge.
ICS .21 - Since the 9.2.1.21 update I had it 4 times total, it's been alternating with another bug where it goes from charged to zero battery and shuts down the second I unplug the charger. The infinite power bug must only be triggered by OTA update because I tried reinstalling the .21 firmware. The zero battery "bug" could be the result of the infinite power bug allowing the tablet to actually stay on long enough to completely drain the battery. Since .11 update the charging ping sometimes stutters and sometimes plays half a ping and stops. Just had a new bug of no charging ping. The tablet and the sound was on at the time. Battery was at 82% and icon changed to charge mode but no ping sound.
ICS .11&.17 - battery drain from 100% to 0% in about 7 mins and charges up in about the same amount of time. Had this bug for over a month from march onwards. I first got the infinite power bug after upgrading to ICS, it's where the battery meter stays at 100% for hours on end without being plugged in for charging.
My TF101 is from the B30 batch.
I do not have the dock.
I haven't used the camera since HC and I just noticed there is dust on the INSIDE of my case after the "repair". There's no way to clean it except to open it myself. The trim is also now separating a bit from the main body on the top left and bottom left. When I got it back from the repair center it was just a little on the left side only.
Things I have tried
Downgrading to HC, but method was very old and likely not a complete downgrade as it did not work. Battery status wipe, Reboots, factory data resets, cold boots, changing various settings, etc. I sent it in for repair which was a waste of shipping costs. Emailed ASUS twice, response time is longer than 1 week. Calling is much faster but same results no one knew if it was hardware or software problem. After sending it in for repair the left side of my TF101 looks like it had been spudged open so they could have already check the hardware. Dragging around a 12FT extension cord is still currently the best solution I've come up with.
Thanks for making a dedicated thread!
Suggestion: Throw a couple more keywords in the title to help others find it. Eg: based on your symptoms, maybe add something like "battery meter issues, shutdown when unplugged from charger" or something similar.
did you try wiping the device?
I managed to pre order my TF101 a full week before the official release date. Now it's come back to bite me in the rear end cause my warranty is up today. I have the service number and RMA from march so maybe they will still honor it if it turns out to be a hardware issue.

Yep. Have you tried doing a reset and supplying a brand-new Google account, so that it doesn't immediately copy any old data to the tablet? (Or even just not supplying an account or connecting to WiFi / Bluetooth at all, so it's 100% stock)?
Has it ever had a custom ROM or been rooted?

The bug occurs even if no account is entered. Wifi, gps, bluetooth on or off it still happens. I had it rooted to overclock on android 3.2.1 I rolled back to 3.0.1 to unroot and get ICS, quite regretting that decision as it ran fine except for a few browser crashes which doesn't seem like a big deal now. I also tried downgrading to 3.0.1 from ICS, still had the bugs. It's running stock ICS right now and the browser rarely ever crashes.

How did you downgrade? It's my understanding that some methods leave the kernel Asus shipped with ICS in place, and hence aren't truly 100% downgrading...

That's most likely why it didn't work. I had the link to that guide saved but since it didn't work I deleted it. I'll have to wait for an official release or a better more complete method of downgrading.
I had a similar issue with my phone at one point. I went into cwm and wiped battery stats and it seemed to clear my problem up. I'm sure if it would work in this instance but it couldn't hurt to try.

Tried that too, twice.
I really don't think this is an ICS issue as you are the only one reporting it (that I've seen). Sounds more like a hardware problem to me....

I have sent it in for repair, no change. The left side looks spudged open so they could have checked, but no one can tell me if they actually did check the hardware. They ask me to send it back for repair again. If they did replace it with andother TF101 it could be a refurbished one that has other kinds of bugs and be scratched and in worse condition than mine. If they gave me a brand new one it could also still have these or other issues. I am waiting on official or better unofficial way to downgrade to HC.
If anyone knows more about the hardware for the TF101 please post your thoughts on what could be going on with these bugs.
Could your battery not just be simply shagged?

A few days before ICS update I had 7 hours of use out of one full charge. I always shut down instead of sleep. Normal battery life is usually 6 and half to 7 hours and 15 mins. The combined total hours of use during the 100% power bugs after .21 was 4-5. If it is really the battery then ASUS is the stingiest company in the world cause they should have replaced it at the repair center when I sent it in.
has anyone suggested to clear your battery stats in clockworkmod (assuming you have it)

Hi
This morning 26th on my note I had an OTA notification. Since I had no Wifi, I cancelled it. Now, when I do a manual check, it says 'no updates available'. I already have 4.04 (XXLRG) from an update a couple of weeks ago so it wasn't that.
Any idea what it might have been?
Hoping for some Jelly Bean soon since I like it on my N7.
Nigel
Omg. Seriously hoping this is foreshadowing the release of jellybean for the note...
Come on Sammy!!
Most likely not jb but to remove search the phone capability

Anyone took it yet?
Damned Apple and their lawsuits....
Pah!, it was just XXLRK, 4.04. It installed a load of rubbish without asking (all German due to CSC setting).
MyTaxi
Lieferheld
KaufDA Navigator
Hugendubel
HRS Hotels
All can be removed
Video in hovering window still works.

Installing that much (really, any!) crapware along with updates is not cool...
But give me Jelly Bean quickly and I'll forgive you, Samsung.
So. Anyone know if this update fixed the battery problem many have? And fixed the issue of bricking the phone when hard reset?

The OP just said that all it did was install a bunch of crapware.
Nothing else.
And it's improved the performance..

Now now....can't use this without "value added software" because your user experience won't be as good
I got this update yesterday. However I can't find the apps mantioned here. It only said "Improved performance". I don't know what they mean. I have had the problems with the battery. I had to either pull the battery for a minute or two, or I had to switch on power saving mode right after charging and leave it on for some minutes before turning off powersaving. I had to do this every time I charged the phone, or else it would not go into deep sleep. It would stay on 200MHz, and drain the battery in a matter of hours.
However, this morning I saw (using CPU Spy) that the phone had charged all night using 200MHz (this might be normal. I don't know this). I tryed to just pull the charger, without doing the steps mentioned above. And i see now, a couple of hours later, that the phone has gone into deep sleep since I pulled the charger.
It might be too early to draw conclutions on this, but it looks promising so far.
I have found no info about the update yesterday. I hope its possible to hard reset the phone without bricking it now, but I don't know.
I will keep monitoring the phone, and let you know.

IIRC the phone doesn't charge during deep sleep, so clocked at 200 while charging should be normal.

That is normal and always was.
After you pull the charger it takes few minutes and the note goes into deep sleep.

I explained badly I think. I have used the CPU Spy for some time now, and i have seen that the cpu use 200MHz when it charging. Good to know this is normal. The big difference this morning was that when I took the phone off the charger, it went into deep sleep. It hasn't done that for a long time. Before the update, it went on using 200MHz after charging, when it was supposed to go into deep sleep. The only thing I could do to get it into deep sleep, was to pull the battery og use battery saver for a few mins.
I just hope they have fixed the brick problem when doing a hard reset too!

Yehh. I asked customer support what the update was, and if they fixed the battery problem and brick problem. They answered that I had to hard reset to fix the battery problem and the update was "improved performance". So I guess I either have to live with a bad battery or bricked phone hehe. Kinda hopeless imo. Anyways, the battery still works good after update :good:
Since last week I am experiencing a really strange behavior of my battery.
Sometimes my phone (in a random app) just vibrates, the screen goes black and then it reboots. After the reboot I have lost 40-50% battery life. Sometimes the phones isn't even able to complete the reboot because it spontaneously has too little power left. See attached screenshots.
Has anybody had similar problems? Or knows a solution?
About my setup: The problem seems to be not rom or kernel related. It occurs no matter what rom or kernel setting I am using. Currently I am running coool boy's 4.3 GE witch KT's kernel (no OC or UV).
Is it possible that the battery is physically damaged? I have NO IDEA...
Experiencing the same problem. I've flashed back to stock and still experiencing this. Phone randomly turning off, not starting, sudden battery drops. Driving me crazy.

I've seen the same sort of graph on my old i9000. You're not gonna like this, but it got worse over time, and eventually my battery wouldn't last more than 5 mins. I thought buying a new battery would help, but it didn't. When I sent it in to Samsung they said they would have to replace the entire motherboard...
I think it's got something to do with the motherboard not being able to correctly sense the battery voltage/whatever/%. The phone reboots automatically because it thinks the battery is flat (even though it isn't).
If you're under warranty I suggest sending it in soon... Hopefully it's not the same as what I had heh.

Well *#!$
I'll observate it for the next few days and see if it's getting worse...
If your phone is rebooting as opposed to just powering off, then I suspect it is hardware related (motherboard) as already mentioned.
I do hope I'm wrong though.
Maybe try using it for extended periods while plugged into a charger and see what happens. If it doesn't reboot then it may just be the battery.
Right as OP I'm suffering the same exact problem or there abouts. I've flashed back to stock rom, fully charged to 100% drained to 0% back to 100% yet still phone keeps shutting off randomly and the only way it works properly is with the charger plugged in. It's escalated quite badly with now after a few mins of YouTube turning itself off and not rebooting. I've requested a repair by o2 who I'm in contract with and see what will happen. I've heard crap stories about their repairs before taking it to Samsung.
I9500 owner. Had this exact same problem when using older firmware. After updating to the latest one, never had this issue again. Its been two months now, even more.
Try this. Flash the latest available firmware for you phone, not talking about OTA but the downloadable one from any region (whichever is latest for i9505). I guess it may have something to do with the kernel too.
Edit: wait a minute, why is your battery level going up when it isn't even charging in the second screenshot. Middle of the battery timeline. That's weird. I guess you should send the phone back

i have something strange like that also on my device ..

Thank you guys :good:
In the last few days the problem occurred more often. But now it is just shutting down (no reboot after vibrate) and after plugging it to the charger and restarting it sometimes I haven't lost any battery. Strange!
I fear there is nothing else to do than turning it in (warranty)

Same problem here. It started three days ago and today I'm barely able to use it... I'm still on warraty and I even have insurance, but it's a major inconvenience anyway.
Mines gone in for repair back to my carrier still no movement despite them having it for 2 days now really should have sent it back to Samsung directly. Will keep you guys posted.

Will send it in tomorrow. Lady on the hotline told me apparently the motherboard is defect and I'll get a new S4. Exchange, no repair. I'm fine with that...

That's good to hear, just inconvenience but at least you won't have to pay for it (or have the defect materialize a year later or something)

Hey
I am new here.
but i was looking for information becuase my s4 9505i has the same problem
shuts of almost everytime i open apps too quickly or stream youtube or some other high usage apps etc.
battery drops up to 50 percent then back 40 percent then to 0 percent, the fact it that the phone never seems to know where the battery is.
by the way my phone is not rooted and i have done the factory reset a few times.
samsung... hmmm.. they seem to be real hard to talk to on the phone, i have had to call them 4 times already about the s4 i ahve had since june, and they just play me off like i am some kind of idiot etc. and deny that there is possibly any reason for random shutdowns, phone freezing, and now this battery/motherboard issue.
next bit is kinda stupid, the phone has a few internal scratches on it from when i ahve stupidly had the phone next to keys and all that. im sure they are going to try and void my warranty and say i have mistreated the phone...
had many phones before, maybe close to 50 and never, never, never have had to ring up a company to try and complain etc.....
any ideas.
I am in Australia,
I am thinking of trying the CONSUMER AFFAIRS kind of threats, but i have to word it the right way...
