Motorola Atrix UK Orange thread - Atrix 4G General

Upgraded to an Atrix (from an HTC Hero) on Orange UK on 13th May, and can't see much UK specific information on the XDA forums, so thought I'd start this thread. Suggest it's a good place to put any info specific to the Orange UK Atrix.
First off:
Mine came locked to Orange, but there's no Orange branding on the phone case, and the box was standard Motorola box with no Orange branding.
From the About Phone menu:
System version: Version.4.1.31.MB860.Orange.en.GB
Model number: MB860
Firmware version: 2.2.2
Baseband version: N_01.86.00R
Motorola webtop version: OSHWT_U1_6.34.0
Kernel version: 2.6.32.9 [email protected] #1 SMP PREEMPT Wed Mar 30 15:19:50 CST 2011

When I "check for updates" there's nothing available.
Update: The stock Orange UK .sbf file can be found here: http://modmymobile.com/forums/4085921-post44.html (thanks to @daywalker04 for this!)

Update: The stock Orange UK Webdock APK files have been posted here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=14541437&postcount=799 - useful if you try the webtop without a dock hack and it doesn't work
Update: There's now a Modaco forum, which could be a good place to discuss general UK Atrix specific stuff: http://android.modaco.com/category/527/motorola-atrix-atrix-modaco-com/
Update: Great guides to updating to root, unlock and flash GingerBread (2.3.4) on the UK Atrix here and here
Any other info I could provide that's useful? And anything any other Orange UK Atrix owners want to share?

im on orange also upgraded on release of it i followed the tuts on here to root with gingerbreak via sdcard etc and install cwm boot recovery along with flashing to gingerblur 3.1 everything was pretty smooth however i made a full back up before starting any of it
i agree with u there isnt much on here regarding uk phones yet

If you are using grey/gingerblur this might be handy: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=13838602&postcount=5 works for me and means you dont need to enable roaming to get data working properly
Also here are the APN settings for orange:

MMS port: 8080

I've just got the Mobile Hotspot working on my non-rooted device on Orange UK. Followed the instructions here: http://androidforums.com/motorola-atrix-4g/332960-here-come-brits.html#post2681704
Basically:
Go to Settings-> Wireless&Networks-> Mobile Networks-> Access point names-> Orange UK 33-> Change the APN type from "default" to "default, tether". Reboot a few times then try the Mobile Hotspot App. I had WiFi off and had to manually turn it on before it would work the first time.

Such a shame, again another wonderful company, customizing a perfectly fine system just so that its a 12month wait for updates again.... GRRRRRR. So tired of this now, If you wait for updates from Orange, you will have a new phone before they issue the update. I mean really? 4.1.31 on UK Orange.... 4.1.83 in the states, exactly how many updates are we behind????

What's everyone's experiences with updates and the pseudo-roms? It looks possible to update to 1.8.3 following the instructions here. Has anyone tried this on an Orange phone in the UK? And if you don't update to 1.8.3, do the pseudo-roms work OK?

I have found the guide to installing French orange 2.1.1 (Skype working/1080p video) but I won't do it unless I have the Original Orange Rom first.... Any Ideas how I can get it or find it online? I just want the Orange 4.1.31.mb860.orange.en.GB SBF file.... I have the 4.2.1.1 all ready to go xD

You could make a dump of your own phone. Not tried this myself, but instructions are at http://www.addictivetips.com/mobile/how-to-backup-your-android-phones-boot-recovery-and-system-partition-images/
Can you post a link to the French Orange install guide?

I took the leap and am running gingerblur 3.5 on my Orange Atrix, seems to work fine after a couple of bootloops during installation.
Would be nice to have the option to flash back though...

Is this phone only being released on Orange? What kind of branding comes on the phone software? Does it boot up/shut down with a nice Orange logo? Is there Orange crap installed in the phone?

Did you update to any of the US ROMs first (1.8.3), or just install gingerblur over the top of the Orange stock?

I think Orange had the exclusive for the first month, but I've heard it's coming out on other networks soon. Mine had no external Orange branding, and no boot up branding, etc. Only thing that shows its an Orange phone is the sim lock to Orange, and an Orange app (Your Orange account management). Other than that, and the slightly back level ROM, it appears to be the same as the US phones.

I dont believe that backup will work as the Atrix has more partitions than that. (Ubuntu and Android and recovery)
hmmm how do the dev's create these SBF files for us to use? Like the french one?

Just went straight from out the box UK stock, with hindsight I think I was quite lucky it worked.

Get mine tomorrow.
After coming from a desire with a fully rooted exploited bootloader, I'm sure it will a big change.
Any of you unlocked your phone from orange? Any recommendations?
Also Paul O'Brien at modaco said he'd open us up page for us brits.

edit: so i soft bricked my phone using a theme, installed fr 2.1.1 now all is good

Rooting the Atrix
I rooted my Orange UK Atrix successfully yesterday, which has allowed me to install Titanium Backup and a teathering app that works better than the stock app! I followed the instructions here: http://briefmobile.com/motorola-atrix-4g-root
One issue is that the process wiped the internal phone storage, so I lost settings for CoPilot, SwiftKey, Kindle, etc. Luckily I didn't have any important data on there, but make sure you backup your storage before you root.

a copy of the orange sbf isnt available and probably wont be so if you dont want to void your warrenty dont flash.
those version numbers arent necessarily comparable, i believe they are carrier specific.
for orange users your better off flashing the 2.1.1 french sbf as the others are for at&t handsets whereas the french one is completely unbranded.
you can install the p-roms over 2.1.1 no problem, there is a whole guide on how to but you HAVE to do a factory reset after or you will "soft brick"/get stuck in a bootloop and have to reflash.

unlocked from t-mobile no internet access on vodafone

Hello -
I just bought an unused t-mobile HTC Hero.
I unlocked it for use on vodaphone.
Everything works fine except that I cannot use the mobile network - although it is apparently enabled in the phone, any attempt to access internet etc fails, saying "this application requires network access".
NB: access is fine using wi-fi.
Support at vodafone suggested a rom upgrade. ROM Download refused by HTC website (upgrade n/a for my phone's S/N, it said)
are the two issues related and how should I resolve them???
S/N (HT98SL903000)
build number: 1.76.110.6146733 CL47212 release keys.
many thanks,
alex
Have you checked the APN settings?
Regards,
Dave
Search for the vodafone ROM on the XDA-DEV Hero Wiki. Or google...
Or, just check youve got vodafones APN settings and not t-mobiles (like foxmeister said)

Thanks for that.
I will follow all of the suggestions.
One point though _ If it needs rom as well as correction of APN - is it worth considering a custom rom instead of getting tangled with vodafone?

Vodafone don't carry the Hero, so there is no Vodafone specific ROM for the Hero.
You've got a T-Mobile branded device with a 1.76 build on it, so my advice would be a MoDaCo ROM, or if you don't want a custom ROM, a generic HTC ROM. If you upgrade to the latest T-Mobile ROM, you'll end up with the "perfect" SPL meaning you'd have to downgrade via a goldcard before you could replace the ROM with something non-T-Mobile.
Regards,
Dave
Thanks again.
I now have internet access having sorted the APN. Much happier now (I got anxious cos the phone I bought in a box from another phone -- bearing the wrong serial number, IMEI etc )
but I'm attracted to the ROM change.
Is there a particular MoDaCo ROm that i should go for that wil allow the usual apps to be run alongside some level of compatibility with outlook and MS word etc?
cheers,
Alex

Well, head to http://hero.modaco.com and have a look. There will be a full version (3.1 IIRC) available free, and a beta of the next one (3.2beta5 IIRC) for paid members.
Try the free one, and if you like it, you might like to donate to Paul to keep him going. Also, that will get you access to his 'kitchen' to make your own custom ROM from the modaco base, but adding and removing things you don't want etc.
But there's really only 1 modaco custom rom (aka MCR), just make sure you get the right one (GSM/CDMA) so GSM for you I reckon.

what about this upgrade??

Hi,
there's a new upgrade for orange tattoos but i can't download it. Someone can test it and confirm what all people think??

But we need the S\N from one of the Orange Branded Tattoo's. You can't download it otherwise.
Ok... just to show that there is no problem sending the s/n.
If yoy try HT99PLG01xxx with xxxx = 0-9 and play a little with
numbers you can find a lot of compinations where the result is
"Sorry, this software download is not suitable for your device."
but the s/n is for tattoo. Just one from orange give as how the
pattern look like.
segway
I don't want someone's S\N but at least someone from the uk download it and put it on megaupload or rapidshare.
Maybe its difficult for someone to upload it to some server...
To give us a patttern is just 1 minute job...

HT99PLG01xxx is only 999 phones... im sure there is more in uk

---- ****** Using 2.3.3 rooted firmware ****** ----
As per jpmwright http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=16281837&postcount=126
I found that I couldn't use xRecovery on my phone with Docomo firmware. So you may need to reflash your phone for 2.1 firmware and re-root it.
So sync/backup all the data you want from your current rooted phone including any Docomo specific apps, for apps I recommend using Titanium backup from the Market.
Follow the guide here to get back to a generic 2.1 firmware: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=920746
I used "FlashTool version 0.2.8" and "X10i Generic version 2.1update1 build 2.1.A.0.435"
You should now be on 2.1 generic firmware with root.
Now to get to X10i 2.3.3 rooted firmware follow: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1192152
After you have completed your phone will be a X10i 2.3.3 rooted phone with generic setting, so for your APN settings use the info from post 1.
(BTW for NTT Docomo, voicemail access number is 1417, vm off is 1470, vm on is 1471)
So now you can use your phone, but you will no longer have access to Docomo Market nor SO-1B apps.
To gain access again, you will have to modify build.prop using FlashTool, Root Explorer or other tools, the file location of build.prop is in flash at /system/build.prop
I noticed this time I had to modify more occurance of build.prop in order for it work or Docomo Market or Market.
Docomo Market does not look at the ro.build.fingerprint properties, but is needed for Android Market.
ro.build.fingerprint, you may wish to comment out the current value with a #
so you can swith between the two identity.
my build.prop modification below:
ro.semc.product.model=SO-01B
ro.build.product=SO-01B
ro.product.name=SO-01B_1241-1846
ro.product.device=SO-01B

Nordic 2.1 on SO-01B.
The only method I managed to get my Jailbroken 1.6 UK Generic firmware SO-01B updated to 121. Nordic was to use the method from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=825201

Do use the "Backup and restore" app, so you can restore your APN settings, alot of the other settings didn't restore which was a bit of a shame. (e.g. google/twitter account etc.)
"Official" Docomo Market from 1.5 firmware fails to work, obviously due to new browser user agent ID.

Mixi plugin I suspect you need to modify Timescape configuration or replace with the Japanese apk. (I didn't find it useful, so I haven't tired playing around with it.) Nothing happens if you install it on the UK firmware.
I got apk by using the older rooting methods, as they were based on the SO-01B firmware. I shall not post the apk, since I don't want Docomo knocking on my door
I tried extracting the system.img using the decrypted roms, but was unable to to.
So basically root your SO-01B using the earlier methods, backup all the apk and then re-root using the latest method. Yeah long winded.
reconnecting to ntt docomo 3g
Hi everyone, I'm new here. Special thanks goes out to Bin4ry and all the other great folks who made the root possible. I managed to root my phone and everything looks great now. I live in Japan and have a SO-01B, so I need to reconnect to NTT Docomo. I read a post from Bin4ry in another thread, and I almost responded to it there, but I thought maybe we could get all the SO-01B centralized in this thread. I can't link yet, but it is in the thread title called "Root on SO01b R1EA025?" He says that SO-01B users need to
...change the model name in /system/*.prop files.
simply pull it with adb, edit on your PC the model names and then push it back!
after reboot your name will have changed.
but be careful only edit the names nothing more
Regards
Bin4ry

root problem: device not found
hi all. it seems like all of you already got root. i was wondering which version of the rooting directions did you use? i am tried using the root_f3v1 and root_f3v2 files and instructions and always got a "device not found" error on step 2. i installed SEUS and PC Companion from the Sony Ericsson site. did you use the downloads from Sony Ericsson or the cd that came with the phone?
actually all i had to do was update PC Companion then everything worked!
2.1 Nordic firmware worked fine on SO-01B and NTT.
Updated with some info, see the beginning of this thread.
I managed to update to 2.1 fine, my APN is working etc. However, I can not for the life of me get my Japanese input to work :/ Input keeps on defaulting to the "default keyboard".
Is there any workaround for this?

The docomo_market.apk is from the original 1.5/1.6 firmware.
Or just launch your browser to : http://www.dcm-gate.com/Xperia/AND/
There hasn't been a need to update the fingerprint setting for "protected" apps. I suspect because there are quiet a few offical Japanese Android phone on Softbank/AU etc.. that they have stopped checking.
Hmm. With Softbank's entire (AMAZING) lineup on 2.2, I'm holding out hope that Docomo's working on it for the Xperia. Otherwise, they should probably stop selling it...
Anyway, Monday should bring an annoucement.
If I were to bother updating now, does the SP-mode app work well? The latest update killed notifcations, so I have no clue when I get an email anymore, unless I check the widget.

I haven't tried SP-mode, since I'm using i-mode.net with iMoNi. So if someone knows please respond. But I read else where other people have updated and install SP-mode app without any problem.
I don't get why they have two products. I stuck with i-mode.net since I can read my i-mode email on any browser etc.
Because SP-mode is instant push email with full native support, whereas i-mode.net is just a way to view i-mode mail on devices other than a phone.
You can have both services, and they compliment each other.
Kanjis with partial Chinese characters
are starting to bug me after testing the nordic firmware. I'm assuming Docomo's firmware should not have this problem, but does anyone know / have any advice on getting around this problem?
I'm now trying to flash global...
Just wait until Wednesday, Docomo's releasing the update then, with PO Box 3.0.
I can't wait for the update this Wednesday, but I have a quick question; ok, maybe three.
It could be lack of understanding, but atm, I don't really understand that need for debranding a headset. I had an iPhone before I purchased the Xperia, and never even considered debranding. So with that said...
What benefit is there to debranding your phone?
Is the thinking similar to installing a vanilla copy of windows on a new PC so you can avoid, potentially resource heavy apps that the distributor wanted to include?
By debranding, do you risk not being able to use that specific carrier's network to the fullest?
Thanks. Just curious.
Thanks for your feedback, iead1. Was wondering how I'm going to survive without being able to type my own name. Anxious for Wed.

Orange locked hero _ trying to update to 2.1 - Is it bricked? Help Desperately needed

Hi, appolgies for being completly stupid, If someone can help me i will be very grateful!
I have an orange network locked hero. After getting tired of waiting I attempted to debrand by installing the generic HTC rom ...
RUU_Hero_HTC_WWE_2.73.405.5_WWE_release_signed_NoDriver
With the idea of installing and letting the OTA update occur...
So i installed goldcard tool created and image. and then installed the htc image.
2.1 is now installed but have the network locked message.
I considered trying to unlock via one of the vendors on ebay, but decided it probably wouldnt work so decided to roll back to the orange rom.
By mistake I ran this update which i believe is the HTC 2.1 update
RUU_Hero_HTC_WWE_3.32.405.1_R_Radio_63.18.55.06P_6.35.15.11_release_signed
Now when i try an run the orange uk 2.73.61.66 release I am getting an error message 140 bootloader version error.
The phone isnt rooted, is there any way I can roll back or unlock 2.1. Am i going to have to call orange an confess?
Please help!!!!
Leigh
There is a STICKY at the top of the G2 Hero Development section called Villain Roots 2.1 RUU,.. tried that?
Sent from my HTC Hero using XDA App
By doing this would it allow me to reflash the original orange image?
Sorry for being dim, finding all this a bit confusing!
root it via that guide, put in a radio that works with orange sim cards, and you should be good to go
Use this guide: http://www.villainrom.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=110&t=2096
Once done you can reflash the original official orange release.
Apologies for being thick...
So I have gsm root running, phone in recovery. What do i do next?
Do i have to flash the rom on using nandroid - never used this before.
try this method - its easier
tinyurl DOT com/3242ljv
you'l need to remake the link as newbies cant post links
Tried the simplified version.
When I try and run the zip file it says it cannot open the file and says it is bad.
Tried a couple of times and with both orange updates..
Arghhh!
Try using a different SD card - hboot couldn't find HEROIMG.zip on one card, tried another and hey presto!
Well in the process of trying to get the orange 1.5 build back on i have got 2.1 working!
Tried flashing an older radio on there and gues what it works. I've now got the standard htc 2.1 build on an orange uk contract, network locked handset.
Quite pleased with myself!

Hi,
Please could you give us the radio version you installed, and how you did it. You'll find the version under Settings > About Phone > Software information > Baseband version.
Many thanks,
The radio version i'm using is
update-hero-radio-63.18.55.06_6.35.05.15-signed
I tried the one before that also which worked.(Basically I started from the oldest one and worked my way up)
I tried the two most recent ones first and these didn't work (Network Locked)
Hope that helps
I've noticed Orange have started rolling out the preupdate, think i might as well stick with the htc build.
Cheers

[CONFIRMED] --> *** X10A users: Android 2.1 Update works for X10a ***

We are all waiting for our country/operator specific update now that the Android 2.1 update has been officialy released for Nordic countries.
The aim of this thread is to exchange experiences and share news
for those of us who got the X10a hardware version
(850/1900MHz bands for some Australia, North America and Latin America operators)
If somebody with an X10a has already updated, please share if you got it straight from SEUS/PC Companion or by changing to a Nordic 1.6 first, and then updated to Nordic Android 2.1
A "Yes I just got 2.1" is now what we expect:
Please share as much info as possible
(method used to update, tested radio 3G connectivity, locale, operator/carrier, language, etc)
Let the fun begin
[EDIT NOV 04, 2010]
NAM 3G bands: CONFIRMED WORKING
Overwhelming feedback confirms both currently released Android 2.1 firmwares (Nordic and Global) DO WORK for the X10a.
jerpelea suggests Sony Ericcson may have unified the bands because the X10i firmware works on the X10a, 3G and all.
ENGLISH, SPANISH, PORTUGUES languages: CONFIRMED PRESENT
Source: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=824935
Released firmwares tested to date by xda-devs users:
- Nordic region Android 2.1 --> reported OK from many X10a users
- Global international Andoird 2.1 --> reported OK from many X10a users
- Notice: some users (espcially Rogers Canada) are reporting problems with 3G speeds (check next pages of this thread)
Where to obtain instructions and the Android 2.1 update firmware:
- 2.1 firmware "Nordic" and flasher by Bin4ry: (this is the one I used, a nice tutorial by user gfgodoy at post 3): http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=825201

- Make sure you put the firmware files into it ("C:\X10Flash-2.1\firmware")
- Make sure you have "SEUS" or "PC Companion" installed and you have connected your phone at least once (for it to install the USB drivers)

THE UPGRADE IS REVERSIBLE:
- If you test Android 2.1 and for some reason want to go back to Android 1.6 please check this thread by SaintyUK: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=824782
.
nobody yet ??
2.1 for x10a can be found in Dev thread. I'd do it but at work blah. Another 9 hours till home
Well, I will wait until TELCEL or Sony Ericsson México says something about the date of the release of the 2.1 update, if they don't say nothing or the date is about a month or later, I will use other methods...
could you please link ??
I can't seem to find a successful attempt
and all of our efforts are fragmentated into many threads
I just installed the X10i 2.1 on my x10a and rooted. It works fine except it occasionally loses 3g connectivity and steps down to the 'H' (I don't know what H means). But even in 'H' data works.
The big difference I noticed was the different apps loaded faster. But overall the system is still sluggish and bringing up the app menu is choppier than before. All the Sony stuff like Dialer, Mediscape, timescape are still choppy.
So I guess you will expect this on the x10a roms too.

I've been reading tons of threads
Was it from this thread ?? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=825201

Yep it worked flawlessly. The Market that shows up for me is the Canadian one and it even gave me the option to run using English (Canada). So I guess that stuff does not depend on the rom.
You just have to make sure everything you need to flash is installed and running. Most people have problems with java but there is a link in there that tells you how to fix it.
Then I used this to root. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=824788
Information for default.prop & build.prop
I remember seeing information about changing the Build descriptors on both of theses files - Where you cahnge the values:
ro.semc.version.cust=XXXX-XXXX
ro.product.name=X10_XXXX-XXXX
Mine is running Generic LAM - 1227-4607
What is the build.prop number for Generic North America - Generic NAM???
Thanks for sharing experiences
Will go for it myself and update the front post when double-checked
I'm interested in how it works as well. I own an X10a, but I live in Europe, so I'm wondering if it would matter anyway. The smartest move would probably be to wait, but if it's going to be a matter of weeks instead of days, I may jump on the X10i update methods.
I have debranded X10a and rooted 1.6. I read your tutorial on forum. Just a question is this for X10a? Would my phone change to X10a or x10i? Is there any chance to brick the phone? Does it removes all the apps? And my root? Please let me know thanks
Sent from my X10a using Tapatalk
It works great for my X10a from Brazil.
Thanks everyone that made this possible.
Can't wait to give it a shot. Off work in 4 and a half hours and it could come soon enough!! LOL
Does this firmware includes SPANISH language????
Just want to mention that I too have updated my X10a using the methods described above (just follow the directions in post #3 of the 2.1 flashing thread).
I have tested, and root worked (have already restored many of my apps via Titanium and am posting this on my laptop tethered via Barnacle). Market works too, and appears to be displaying the Canadian market for me properly.
Thanks for the info everyone.
