[Q] *URGENT* - Droid X Gingerbread Problems - Droid X General

Hi Everyone,
My name is Andrew, and I am a bit of an Android n00b.
This week I tried to install the 2.3 Gingerbread leak on my Droid X.
I used the Droid bootstrap to install the Gingerbread from my SD card.
I wiped my cache and factory reset everything first.
LONG VERSION:
However, when I try to boot it, I get stuck on the Motorola logo.
The good news: I can boot into the boot-loader and recovery mode, but I can't do much from there, as "factory reset" option doesn't fix the ROM.
More bad news: Although I copied the contents of my SD card to my Laptop, my friend accidentally broke it. I'm currently SD card-less right now.
SHORT VERSION:
- Boot-loop on Motorola logo after attempted Gingerbread install
- Stock SD card broken
- SD card pre-wipe data saved on laptop
- Able to access recovery mode and boot-loader
QUESTIONS:
1. Will buying a new (generic) micro SD card fix my broken SD problems? If so, is there compatibility issues with SD card storage sizes? (e.g will a 32gb SD work, because my stock SD was 16gb)
2. Is it possible to get a ROM (Stock Froyo, Gingerbread, or Custom...) onto the droid?
3. If I just tell Verizon that I tried to reset my droid X to stock and it stopped working, does that void my warranty, and can they tell if I'm lying?
4. Does the missing micro SD card mess-up my warranty for the phone hardware?
5. If I can't get a ROM on there, is it possible for Verizon to via the boot-loader?
I haven't been able to find a problem quite like mine that has been resoleved.
If you know of (a) thread(s) that answers these questions, please link them!
Thanks SO much to any Android 1337 H4X0RZ who respond.
Sorry for this being so long!
Thanks again,
Andrew (AMcKeeCT)

1. Will buying a new (generic) micro SD card fix my broken SD problems? If so, is there compatibility issues with SD card storage sizes? (e.g will a 32gb SD work, because my stock SD was 16gb)
I believe any fat32 micro SD card will work.
32gigs is the max supported...and currently the largest made...so ya..any MicroSD will do.
2. Is it possible to get a ROM (Stock Froyo, Gingerbread, or Custom...) onto the droid?
Without an SD card...You're not going to be able to get a custom rom, I don't think.
You CAN get it back to the stock ROM with an SBF.
Google how to sbf...people act like it is so hard and risky...I've done it probably 10 times all without even the slightest problem. Don't let the negative talk scare you.
3. If I just tell Verizon that I tried to reset my droid X to stock and it stopped working, does that void my warranty, and can they tell if I'm lying?
Short answer:
If you SBF...get your droid running...you won't need to do that.
Long answer:
This is why verizon / tmobile / etc hate rooting.
People think they've bricked their phones...and send them in...costing the companies money. Don't help build our negative rep!
That being said...I've personally returned a phone that had a camera problem that was NOT related to rooting. You can return your phone to stock and they'll never know...
Rule of Thumb:
If tampering with your phone in a manner inconsistent with the warranty ruins it...don't return it. You'll hurt the rooting community.
If your phone has a HARDWARE defect or something physically wrong with it...return to stock and return the phone.
4. Does the missing micro SD card mess-up my warranty for the phone hardware?
Not sure...
I know when I sent my phone in (through best buy's geeksquad insurance) they didn't even take my SD card...gave it to me to hold. So I don't think there would be a problem there.
5. If I can't get a ROM on there, is it possible for Verizon to via the boot-loader?
Again...
Don't send your phone in to get fixed by people who are losing money from YOU voiding your warranty.
Short answer:
Google SBF Droid X
http://www.mydroidworld.com/forums/droid-x-discussion/6367-new-full-sbf-droid-x-2-3-340-a.html
Use THAT sbf file.

Thanks Jubakuba!
I really appreciate your answer/quick reply!
Will do on the SBF.
Thanks,
Andrew

Stuck like Chuck

Fellow Android fans. I am out of ideas and could use a benevolent lending hand of help. I have been searching this site for three days now and have attempted everything I can think of (and have found in searches) to get my phone back up again. I have found a couple of posts where people were stuck at the splash screen but just wiping/reflashing typically fixed their issue. I however cannot get past the G1 screen after each boot regardless of the ROM NOR can I even access my SD card which I suppose are two different problems all together.
HISTORY: I have had every modified ROM since JF released his first version last year. I have flashed, backed up, changed radios, put apps/cache/data to my SD (8gb Class 6) with rare issues. The couple times I did get stuck at the splash screen, I would just use Fastboot to go back to a backed up nandroid ROM. But then I decided to go to the latest JF Lucid 1.5 ROM. That’s when it all went downhill. (Certainly no one's fault but my own I know) Though I wiped initially, it seemed that some links were still stuck on the phone for I couldn’t get my apps to SD. The ROM was working fine and I could install market apps without issue, but I wanted to have 100+ apps for absolutely no good reason other than “because I could.” So I was talking with Marcus who suggested I repartition my SD card. This is where the noob came out of me. My trial period had ended with Partition Manager so I used Window’s Device Manager to delete the partition (I backed everything up thankfully) After I did so I powered down the phone to see if all was ok. It wasn’t. It just gets stuck on the G1 screen.
Attempts to Restore:
• I can access the Recovery tool and wipe/flash an older known working update.zip file and it says that it loads successfully, but when I reboot I get stuck at the G1 screen.
• I can access Fastboot and flash a backed up ROM (known working backups that have worked before mind you), it says loaded successfully, but when I reboot it gets stuck at the G1 screen.
• When I insert my SD card into a card reader I cannot access the card as it says “insert disc”.
• I went into Windows Device Manager and it shows that have a memory card but says “Unreadable”.
• I put an older 2gb SD card in the phone and loaded an older RC33 ROM and flashed it. It flashed just fine but gets stuck at the G1 screen.
• So I downloaded the Ubuntu Live CD and attempted to reformat my SD card via Gparted. No dice. It won’t even recognize it as an available disk. (I tried both with it in my phone connected via USB and in the micro SD card adapter and card reader)
I have Windows XP, a Ubuntu Live Cd, JF Lucid 1.5, and a headache after the numerous failed attempts at getting this straight.
I am completely out of ideas. I am not however, familiar with ADB so I am really hoping that there are some commands or something out there can bring my phone back from the dead. If I have to buy a new SD card, so be it, but I am trying to avoid having to buy a new phone. Long story short, I suppose my question is two fold:
1) By deleting my partition did that ruin the SD card and ultimately cause these boot loop issues? I just can't figure that out how that is possible since a partition isn't even a requirement of flashing a ROM
2) Is it possible to reclaim my phone and if so, how?
Thank you very much for your time and any suggestions...
Haters Need Not Post
Interesting problem you got there. Not that i have any answers for ya, but a few ideas. I've read the boards here for a lil while at least, and i know that if you had custom boot images, the second one can cause hangs when switching to certain roms. You didn't say, have you tried flashing the original dreamimg.nbh? When you formatted your sdcard, did you have apps to sd and that dalvic cache to sd card too? possibly pointers on the main partition pointing to a non existing mount point. Hope you get it up and running again
what spl were you on? have you tried the sapphire spl? or hardspl?
I've done this before too. Easiest way to fix it is to flash DREAIMG.NBH, and then re-install test keys and the SPL of your choice and reflash JF1.5
I forgot to mention that yes I had apps, data, and dalvik all moved to the SD card but NO custom boot images. I am assuming the data or dalvik move is what caused the initial problems when I flashed to ADP 1.5. I currently am running the HardSPL (HSPL10.95.3000)
I haven't tried flashing the DREAIMG.NBH yet but assumed it wouldn't work as I have flashed numerous other ROMs to no avail. I suppose I shouldn't assume. I will try that today. On the other hand, any ideas on how to reformat (or just make it recognizable for that matter) my SD card?
Thanks gang!

How do I go about reinstalling the test keys? And do I need to flash to an SPL other than the HardSPL (which I have now) for the DREAIMG.NBH to flash appropriately?
Thanks man

flashing the nbh should be the way to go .. it basically images the whole phone .. whereas flashing the ROM files does not .. each update.zip only deletes the /system portion of the phone .. performing ALT+W deletes the /system AND /data portions of the phone
flash the nbh like you were starting from scratch with the root process .. go back thru all the steps .. put the new recovery.img etc blah blah blah
odd
I'm not real sure as far as the test keys go. But as long as your phone is rooted with a hard spl (which is just a edited engineering spl) you should be able to reflash any rom including rc29 (dreamimg.img) just rebember to go thourgh the bootloader to do so not recovery. The very way you originally rooted you dream.
Have you tried simply doing a wipe yet? Sounds like you need to clear out the /data partition, and be patient when it boots up the first time after a wipe - it can take a while.

Thanks guys - The DREAMIMG flash worked. You truly are life savers. (My wife has been on my ARSE the last 4 days for this.. lol) I do have a quick question for Lucid.
First, thank you for ALL the fine work you have done. Basically all of my ROMs have been yours (and JF's of course). So my question is with the linking of the data and dalvik cache. Even though I wiped when flashing to 1.5 it seemed I still had file folders stuck in my partition which were preventing me from updating the links again. What should I have done to re-link them appropriately? I tried your "undodata / dalvik" scripts but still couldn't get them linked.
Again guys - Thank you

Ya I wipe with every flash. I even let it boot up overnight (as I read that it can take a while) but when I woke up it was still at the G1 screen. Have no idea what caused this but the DREAMIMG.nbh flash worked.
great news

SDcard probs....
Did you ever get your SD Card working again?
If not, download the free version of killdisk from http://software.lsoft.net/KillDiskSuiteFree-Setup.exe and use it to wipe the entire sd card with zeros. After that, remove the card from your windows box then reinsert it. Windows should ask you to format it and you should be golden. I've seen this problem happen with flash drives as well and this always gets them back.
I suspect that the disk is dead. In any case, windonkey isn't the right thing to use to try to recover it. Boot on the livecd, insert the disk, type 'dmesg', which should output the device file, i.e. 'sdb', then as root do a "dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sd?" where ?=whatever that was from 'dmesg', wait until it finishes, pull the card, push the card, run gparted. More than likely, the output of 'dmesg' will show a problem with the card, in which case, melt it, burn it, break it in half, throw it out, warranty it, whatever makes you happy that results in you not accidentally trying to use the thing.

Thanks for the suggestion. Tried it but it couldn't write to it. I suppose it's hosed. Just ordered another. Thanks for your help though!
Can flash DREAMIMG.nbh - but not a modded ROM
I was able to regain my phone by flashing DREAMIMG.nbh. (thank you all) I followed all of the directions (to the "T") from this post (http://www.kyubinc.org/files/AndroidMod.zip) that I saw Lucid recommended in an April post. I was able to get through the steps and rooted the phone successfully (made sure I could get "#" when typing "su" into Term Em) BUT when I go to flash RC33, I get hung up at the freaking G1 screen AGAIN !!! <<I'd pull my hair out if I had any>>
I let it boot for 90min before I decided to request suggestions so I don't think it's a patience thing. The only error I noticed while rooting was when I entered the recovery console, at the top it said "Can’t open /cache/recovery/command". Can't remember if that was normal or not as it's been so long but it let me successfully flash the update.zip from the SD card so didn't think much of it. But when I rebooted it is stuck at the G1 screen.
Now I know that my 8gb SD card is hosed so am using the 1gb that came with the phone until I get my new one. So I am using a completely different SD card but am getting the same "stuck at the splash screen" issue. Anyone have an idea what in my phone is surviving all of these wipes/flashes that is perpetuating this issue? It just doesn't make since that I can flash an OEM ROM (DREAMIMG.nbh) just fine but not a modded one (RC33). I certainly am not ruling out user error, but it just seems like a directory or file or WHATEVER inside the phone has been corrupted or something because it's the only constant in this whole process.
Thanks again
dunno
When you went through the root process again did you reinstall the hard spl again. And then protect it

and you followed these steps precisely?

just making sure
O dear, I am experiencing the same issue - I pulled my SD out this morning was not able to get it recognized, and upon reboot got stuck on the splash screen. I have wiped several times and am still stuck at splash 2. I am at work so cannot try to access my card thru my PC to see if I am having the same problem as gPhunk, but can only assume that i fried my SD card. I am a n00b, so really nervous of my ability to get myself back up and running.
To install the dreaming.nbh, is it the same as any other flash - rename it update.zip and ctrl-s from the recovery screen? Does that bring back to an RC build so i have to re-root?
Help! And thank you so much!

Similar - but the ones I followed were these

I will try this set this time..

need some advice

I recently got a hd2 off of craigs list for a steal, and the ONLY reason why I got it is to run android on it. But I am having problems getting a android rom to boot, and getting one stable. I have double checked all of my intructions to the T, and I am coming down to two reasons why I cant get mine to work properly.
1. sd card problems, Do I really need a class 6 card? Right now it hangs where the linux boot says, creating a new data store.. it just counts down from 99 very slowly.....
2. I did buy the phone used. so one of my battery prongs on the phone is off set a tad. loose a little. will that affect my android loading?
I have tried to search long and hard before I made this post, but honestly THERE IS ALOT OF INFORMATION TO READ THRU and i justget confused.
if anyone can shed some light on these two questions, i will appreciate it.
You don't really need a class 6. I'm using a class 4 just fine and there are many people who've said the stock 16gb card works. I would suggest pulling all files you want saved off the card and do a fresh reformat to fat32. Then move your files back over and download the version of Android you want to run.
Are you using a stock or custom Rom?
Have your tried different radios?
Have you tried a different build of Android?
All of these variables come into play. Can you provide some more info about your setup? Thanks and good luck. I hope the reformat solves your problems.

I am using the latest energy froyostone rom with his custom wm rom for android. I have only flashed one radio, the one that went with a chucky rom gtx.
the wm rom boots up no problem, i always reformat when I try to flash a new rom, I always wipe the sd card before I try.
Now I need a working phone, so I have my sim in my vibrant when I flash, does that make a problem?
I really cant think of anything else that I have tried. I have gotten a couple of rom's to boot up with android, but when I reboot and install my sim card, the phone will freeze upon wm boot up, and sometimes load android again but goesinto a boot loop within 5 minutes. I am really looking for a good wm /android combo, if I get it running stable the first time, I probably wont flash again until some major breakthru happens.
Edit# switched sd cards. got it to load up one time, then tried to reboot and put my sim card in, phone goes into a boot loop before I can finish set up.
Now it is taking me forever just to boot up to WM
I am experienceing freezes on start up, freezes once WM boots up.
thanks for your advice
I'm assuming you have hacked with hspl.
Check the pins on the battery and try not to pull the battery out as those pins are really fragile. If one is bent it and shorts it puts the phone in a continuous boot loop, not a big deal just straighten the pin out and you should be fine.
I'm using the latest mattcfroyo sense rom ver 16 and had a similar issue where the linux boot would just freeze past a certain point. There is a modified zimage that was posted that completely solved that problem, again an easy fix, just swap out the old for the new. But I have to admit spending about a half day messing with this to get it to work, at one point I almost thought about moving back to wimo - after that nightmare thought I dug in and found the fix.
ok, another update, and thanks for the advice, I took my simcard out, and it booted up android fine, its been up for 10 minutes , no problem.
Are there any sim card issues I need to know about? Should I head to tmobile and get a new one>?
I think I am really close, and I thank you two for tryng to help.
It couldn't hurt to get a new sim. There could be a corruption on your card causing the boot loop.
*Edit: head to any TMO corporate store and they will give you a new sim for free.

I used a cheap 4GB Micro-SD card and it seems okay. I think its recommended just to have a fast card to improve performance. The best thing to do is to try a different build. Ensure you did the following steps:
1. Flash HSPL(2 or 3, I personally used 3)
2. Flash a Windows Mobile ROM(I am using a barebone version of Energy by NRG28)
3. Flash a radio(Version 2.08.# or higher, i'm personally using 2.12.#)
4. Flash a build of Android(Any is fine, i'm personally using Darkstones Froyo 2.1 but try a few)
5. Take SD Card out, launch into Energy, insert SD Card, use file explorer to go SDCARD\Android\ and launch CLRAD.exe(Wont show anything but press a few times to make sure) and launch HaRAT.exe, wait until you get into Android(may take some time on the building data store text) then restart phone by doing step 5 again
^ don't think i've missed anything
******Edit******
Didn't see your post about SIM card until i posted this, try a free Pay as you Go sim or another spare SIM you may have, or maybe put SIM in when Androids loaded?
i would also look into starting from scratch , like going back to stock rom and working your way back up

[Q] Need Focus ROM to Flash, availability anytime soon?

Note: recently asked a similar questions about this after flashing Samsung Omnia 7 ROM onto the focus (DO NOT TRY IT DOES NOT WORK), which i only did because my phone memory was fried by a faulty microsd card.
I am curious if the ROM will ever be available so i can flash it onto my phone and start fresh.
Also any suggestions of any kind to fix my phone with this limited information I am open to anything.
IMO this is a big deal.
If this could be done then more people could feel safer about hacking and such. I've got to admit I don't know if I want to do anything other than "official" methods if there's no recovery to get it back to stock.

Check out this thread.
It seems this person successfully (sort of) flashed an Omnia 7 ROM on his Focus...

which files do i keep on my sd card

i recently bought a g2x and have cyanogenmod 7 on my evo...i wanted to sell it as fully rooted with gingerbread via c7 final....however i wanted to keep my 8gb sd card that came with the evo since g2x comes with nothing...so i have a spare 4gb card and wanted to know what files i should transfer so that new user would have everything they needed to go back to original fw from card and still have clockworkmod recovery. while i will be selling to a stranger on craigslist...i dont want to screw them over.
You can't really sell it with CM7 on it... there's no way to program the phone. X) You need a Sense ROM with EPST programming controls to do that.
Ding ding ding!! Many don't realize this.
What you could do is leave a backup image of cm7 (devoid of your settings/data) on the sd card, but have a sense rom installed at time of delivery. If you have a decent sense rom setup, leave that instead.
To take this a step further, you could give your buyers several options
1) completely stock locked device
2) completely stock (sprint lover's rom), unlocked device
3) optimized sense rom
4) cm7
Good luck figuring out a suitable description, but at least your buyer will have a choice. Make sure you include detailed dumbed down instructions how to flash #4 if that's what the buyer wants.
OK thanks guys

Boot Loop, Can be half-fixed. need solution.

Hello, I know that you might yell at me for not searching forums but I tried! but I have a somewhat unique problem.
The problem is that my DHD bootloops on any Custom Rom. (I seriouly mean ANY)
I can stock it with RUU file on my 8GB SD Card. but the problem is that I want to use a custom rom for non-froyo + root.
so what basicly happens is that it fails horribly on flashing custom roms, I believe the fault might be due to SD Card (the 16GB SD Card I use for normal + custom rom use) so I will try out the 8GB SD card to flash a custom rom this evening. but the problem that happens each time I try to flash a custom rom of the 16GB SD card is that I get HTC/White Screen Boot Loop. It is a infinite boot loop, I tried installing more than 10 different roms. (different versions, and different roms) I even tried to install a rom that worked earlier (don't ask me why I wanted another rom, I just felt like it)
so anyone have solutions?
I'll try these today: flash off my 8GB, remove sd card after flash before boot (seen topics that might help it)
but so far this problem has happend all the time since I got the DHD.... stupid phone give me some slack already!
Solved
Solved
Well, I could successfully install a new rom (Tried Beat Bliss Sense 3.5)
and removed SDcard before reboot and it worked perfectly thought my settings does fc all the time (so Can't use settings at all) so gonna flash something else.
so I have learned that my 16GB sd card is so faulty that it cannot install a custom rom not even a stock RUU (since PD98.img failed before on the 16GB) but oddly enough I dont have problems with media so I can use it as my media/app card while I use my 8GB card as rom flasher. thanks anyway if anyone had a solution in their mind (even if it was the same one)
well in short my 16GB SD card seems faulty some or other way. in some parts
