Hi, I used autonooter to root my nook and have it at 1.1 currently. I want to update that to 1.2 rooted. What is the easiest way to do this? Is there something I should wait for, like a new version of autonooter that will make this easier? I can wait as long as needed. Sorry if this has been answered, I just didn't see this particular topic addressed.
You can do it using manual nooter and would have to wipe your nook. Alternatively you can wait for autonooter (might still have to wipe butthe process would be easier)
ok I guess I'm waiting.
Ok, sounds like I need to wait for the new version of autonooter. Anyone know when that might be coming out?

I've had my DX since launch day and love it. It's amazing how much more I can do and how much better of a phone this is than my old iPhone 3GS. I have been on the fence about rooting and have been wanting to do it even more now that this Z4Root app has been released. I'm just a little scared that I might screw something up. I have a few questions that hopefully can be answered and will hopefully help me jump into the root world. Thanks in advance.
1. If I hit the *Unroot* button in Z4Root, will it get rid of everything it had installed and return my phone back to normal?
2. If my phone is rooted, will I still get notified about and be able to install future OTA software updates for when 2.2.1 and Gingerbread are released?
3. The main reason I want root: how do I change my status bar from the stock one to the black one everyone has?

1. It says it will. But maybe someone that has unrooted can chime in. I did use the app to root- but I have had no need to unroot. And I should mention this- it is the droidx bootstrap recovery app that appears to be very difficult to "uninstall". Bootstrap Recovery is a separate app that you will need to create back ups of your phone.
2. If your phone is rooted you should get the updates. I was rooted on 2.1 and got 2.2. But only if you don't delete any files from your system that should not be deleted. If you delete stock system files than I don't think you can get the update without either restoring the files or doing the sbf.
3. To get the black bar there are a couple of ways of going about it. You have to be rooted. the easiest way when you are first getting started is to find a black bar mod that comes in the form of a .zip file that you apply using the DroidX Bootstrapper App I was talking about. Most of the threads that have black bars also have instructions for the method to apply them. Make sure the mod is for the rom you have. If you apply the rubix1.6 black bar mod to your rooted 2.2 ota rom- you will be in a heap of trouble. Generally you run the Bootsrap recovery app and boot into recovery. Make a back up first (it will get stored on your sdcard in a file called clockworkmod/backup (i think that is the name). I always reboot after creating a back up.
Then reboot into recovery again. Apply .zip from sdcard. choose the .zip. apply it.
the whole thing was very confusing for me until I did it a few times. And everyone talked in very vague terminology. For instance - no one explained- the volume rocker buttons move the curser up/down. the camera button is the enter or select button. and the back button is still the back button.
Once you get going on it- if you need clarification- I will try and keep an eye on this thread.
good luck.
Thank you very much for your reply. I will try to look into the bootstrap app you are talking about to see if it is simple to unroot and go from there. I appreciate your time and hopefully I will root soon and I will post my outcome.
I just returned by D2G and went got the DX, (the keyboard was too small for me). But you are right the Boot strap Recovery app is a pita to remove. Every time I turned my D2G on or rebooted it came up in Boot Strap Recovery which I was aware it would do. Not a big issue, but removing it is a PITA.
If you do the 2.3 update you can forget rooting with that program
Now that I have 2.3, how can I root my phone to remove Madden NFL 11?

If you have the latest OTA, .340 (Android 2.2.1), z4root will work in a matter of seconds.
once you go root you'll never come back to plain and boring.
Root, Rom, Theme.
Read all the threads lots of good info here and other sites....
I used autonooter 3.0 to root my nook do I have to worry about my nook automatically updating to the new firmware?
Yes you do. Check here, but nothing is truly confirmed to work yet.
Hmm any updates on which method is the best? I could only get the ADB to work via wifi so yeah... haha
I hope I dont ask something that has been asked a milion times, but I didnt find very clear answers to this...
I got my A500 a few weeks ago, updated right out of the box to 3.2 and am happy so far BUT would now, after some use like to root it.
I see that its possible by downgrading, also read somewhere about an modified official updater that would work - what I want to know, how can I root that thing without any data loss?
Is the downgrading variant completely safe for that? Or, in any case, is there anything that can make a full backup without root?
Oh, and when finished - is there a ROM that basically just gives me root and throws out all of the crap ACER installed on the system?
Thanks ^^
Pray to the Acer Gods usually helps.
But really, if you synch your contacts to Google, then you have little to worry about. If.... you trust the cloud.
Paid apps, are always able to be re-installed through the Market.
If you have a recent version of the market, then you should be able to restore most of the free apps.
But hey, they were free, so who really cares....
SD card (photos and such) are not effected.
I've been researching this as well, but have yet to find a solution. It appears that there is no way to make a backup of your stock ROM before flashing a custom ROM, since you have to downgrade in order to root.
Since there are stock 3.2 rooted ROMs in the dev section, I'm tempted to just make that my initial flash after downgrading/rooting, set it up, then do a backup.
And fyi, astro file manager can backup your apps similar to titanium backup. I plan on doing that to restore the apps I've already installed.
Hope that helps a little. I mostly commented in case someone provides you with a solution...then I'll see it.

I must have been lucky. I followed the easiest path to downgrade on the tutorial from this forum. After I applied root and used acer recovery installer to install taboonay 2.2. I didn't clear cache or do a factory reset, and everything worked. Only lost the acer apps, which I was able to get back painlessly from either tabootools or gameloft. I am sure that people would not recommend going my route though.
Taboonay 2.2 is a pretty clean rom, and I feel it's nice with Richardtrip's 3.4 kernel.
just revert to 3.0.1 with the 2nd method of this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1276227 and you won't lose anything.

Also works with 3.2.1 Australian default rom. Only problem is I lost default rom as I jumped into custom stuff at 3.2.1 and could not find info on how to back up the operating system without root.
So I've searched around the net, and am not 100% sure what to do. Here is my situation.
I "rooted" my phone awhile ago, or so I thought, but now despite having superuser and trying to do the fix and update for it, it doesn't work, and no app can gain root access, however when I try to run droid easy root, it says i'm already rooted.
I'm running GB with build # 4.5.1_57_DX5-35 (if that helps).
All I want to do is re-root or whatever and install a rom (miUi specifically) over the default gingerbread motoblur one. I'm on a Mac btw and don't know much about this stuff...Any help is appreciated.

use the zergrush (aka doomlord) method posted in my signature, should fix you right up
edit: eww just saw where you said you were on a mac, not sure if this will work for the mac, i know that superoneclick also now uses the zergrush method. perhaps there is a mac version of that.
I'll try it out using VMware fusion and my XP partition...Hopefully it works. Might have some questions on the process if there aren't detailed instructions. Thanks.
I currently have stock 3.2 rooted (US 7.006.01_COM_GEN2). I got an ota notification for 7.014.01. Is there a rooted version of the ota I can flash via cwm?
From searching around, it's also looking like another ota ( 7.014.02?) Is right behind the 7.014.01. Is that true, and if so, is that available in rooted cwm-flashable form?
Neither available yet. (I'm waiting too. They were just released, so give them some time)
I wouldn't be so quick to update something, without first knowing what it is
Old saying "if it ain't broke, don't fix it"
A little more info on the update;

Yes, the 01 and 02 will break root. But, never fear, I rooted it for you. Here's the link

Very cool
Although I don't need it, it's nice to know some people are still doing some neat things for stock 3.2.
update without wiping?
Thanks for the info. But, unless I'm reading your instructions wrong, it sounds like I have to wipe to update to your rooted 3.2.1. Is there just a rooted update.zip that can be flashed with cwm without wiping?
Or am I missing something?
There are some roms currently in the works for 3.2.1. I'd expect them to come out fairly soon, keep an eye on the development forum. A few guys working on them right now.

Ok, if I hear you correctly, you are already rooted and want to use CWM to run the updates and keep root? Therefore you don't wipe out everything?
Piece of cake, just grab the update.zip and change it not to wipe your permissions. Then rebuilt it.
If you don't know how to do that, then put a backdoor into your device therefore you can get back into the device as root. Updates (normally) are not evil un-rooting tools. They don't seek and destroy root and rooting tools. Updates just reset the permissions on all files in /system removing the 'sticky' bit. The 'sticky' bit is how you get root.
What is a 'sticky' bit you ask? Well, in Linux (Unix) you can set a permission on a file so that any time it is run, it runs as the user that owns the file. This would be like setting a shortcut in Windows to say always run as 'Administrator'.
So, when you apply an update, the last thing it does is resets all the permissions back to their default. Since they recursively do this on the /system directory they remove the sticky bit on your su program.
So, all you have to do is set up a root backdoor outside the /system folder. My favorite is to set the ro.kernel.qemu = 1. This makes adb run as root. Now after your OTA resets permissions, you can just adb shell and you get #(root). Now you just reset your 'sticky' bits.
