This is my second phone, before i had the HTC Tattoo which were lot's of rooting guide's, custom recovery's and ROM's.
I've rooted mine before on 2.3.2 with Gingerbreak, but i wanted the new android version 2.3.3. So i unrooted my phone with gingerbreak and installed the new android version.
And now i want to do this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1174160
Freeing up some space and memory.
but i need root again.
What is the best way to root my phone?
I found this way? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1043630
But does it delete all my stuff? And do i need to unroot it if i want to install a software update?
Thanks.

Do you have an unlocked bootloader? the method you posted requires it rooting will not stop you getting official updates, but unlocking your bootloader will, If you try to flash an OTA update with an unlocked bootloader, you will brick your device, bootloaders can now be relocked though, allowing you to flash OTA updates, you can also unroot, simply by removing SU from /system/xbin/

Nope i don't have an unlocked bootloader.
No problem, if you have an locked bootloader, check out this thread for a tutorial on how to root 2.3.3, you will loose all data during the process though

If you flash the uk generic 2.3.2 (from the link AndroHero posted here) then when you do the ota update it will search for the uk generic 2.3.3 which is available so ota will be possible.
As far as backing up you can try MyBackup Pro you will need the paid version tho.
Or use the free MyPhoneExplorer Client to back up your text messages, call logs e.t.c (cannot back up app data with MyPhoneExplorer Client)
Also found App List Backup quite useful as well. Or just look through the free backup apps on the market here
Can I just ask a quick question if I hard reset my phone will I lose root

Ehmm i don't have an UK version.
I'm from the Netherlands and i don't know what firmware version i have.
If it's build-number its .145
Btw now that i've rooted my Xperia Play and updated it over OTA to 2.3.3 can I in future update it to a newer version without losing my root?
Ok next error:
I saved my Apps with ApptoSD.
Later i made a backup of all my apps in MyBackup Pro.
How can I get my saved apps on SD back? I can't find them in de APP launcher, App2SD can't find them? Wtf has happened to all those apps? I can restore them with MyBackup Pro but I can do them only by one because the Xperia Play has ****ty internal memory but a huge SD card...
And now it spontaneous rebooted for the second time...

It does not matter since you will be flashing the uk 2.3.2 (in the guides). So any updates will be the uk updates not netherlands.

If you freeze bloat then you can use ota again when 2.3.4 arrives. If you uninstall anything you will have to reinstall it before you can use ota. Ota needs all the bloat still present on the phone or else it will fail. So i plan to unfreeze my bloat when 2.3.4 arrives and use ota in hopes of keeping root. We dont know if root will be kept when using ota to update to 2.3.4 but i cannot see why it would not work. We will see in october

Never used apps2sd so i cannot comment sorry. Not used my backup pro either but if you can restore them one by one then unfortunately that might be the only way to get the apps data back. Google your apps2sd problem and my backup pro problem and see if other people have had the same problems.

Did you tick the clear user data box when flashing 2.3.2? If you did and it random reboots still you might want to try reflashing 2.3.2, do root then ota again or use SEUS to install a clean 2.3.3 then downgrade to 2.3.2 > root > ota to 2.3.3.

Deleted all installed apps on SD before flash (.android_secure)
And restored it with MyBackup.
Tomorrow i'm going to backup all the bloat and delete it. So i can restore it when i need it.
But freezing is maybe also a good idea. With this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1174160 i got 245 Free mb on internal and that's enough.
I'm curious if anyone who installed the OTA update has successfully rooted their device.
I was on a fully stock unrooted phone when I applied the 4.5.91 OTA update yesterday, wondering if anyone else is in the same scenario and has rooted their device after the new update
Yes, it was fairly simple using the preinstall method in the development thread
Link is in my signature as many people don't know what the "pre-install" method is/was.
I updated using Ken's safe images and used the preinstall method. Worked like a charm. Here you go:

How do you clear superuser app data? Do you mean within the superuser app itself in settings that says clear logs?
I just rooted my Atrix with the preinstall method also. I updated to GB OTA from stock Froyo 2.2.2.

Settings >> Applications >> Manage Applications >> scroll to Superuser >> Clear App Data button
Without doing this I was getting tons of FCs from the Superuser app and had to root again. I read about this fix on the EVO 4G forum.
Also, the Superuser apk included in the preinstall image is not current - after you install go to the Market and you'll find there's a new version. Once it installs run SU and it'll say there's an updated su binary available. Click ok, yes, whatever, give the app root permission, and you'll be updated and rooted.

Do you lose data/settings if you use the briefmobile method? (e.g. the old gingerbreak method wipes your internal storage)
Also just to be totally clear : does the briefmobile method works fine with 100% stock unrooted no BL-unlock OTA 2.3? (i.e. did not use any sbf, cwm , nothing pure stock with OTA gingerbread). For example I read the preinstall thread and it seems to be guys talking about flashing sbfs. Then there are a million warnings not to flash sbfs if you've gone OTA gingerbread. So confused
There's just so much info floating around and its quite daunting TBH even for someone like me who's custom ROMmed Samsungs and HTCs before.

No you don't lose any files from the method I've posted about. Also, Gingerbreak didn't have that effect for everyone - I didn't lose anything when I did that on 4183.

You can backup most of your device with 'adb backup' before you do the unlock and then 'adb restore' it afterwards. It seems to miss certain things, like paid apps (or it did for me), so if those apps have options to dump config backups to /sdcard that would help in case you have to restore them.

Nvm, already posted.
It's not rooting that causes you the wipe, it's unlocking.
However no one has made a way to root without unlocking first.
So if someone figures out how to just root, it would be fine.

It doesn't matter.
Unlocking is what erases the data, what you do afterwards doesn't make any difference.
But since you're already hooking up N7 to PC and booting it in all these weird modes, you might as well finish what you start.

You can't unlock the bootloader without erasing data.
You can use adb backup, but I just manually backed up what I needed (launcher settings, apps are downloaded automatically from play store, 'sd card' stuff, you don't really need anything else.) Besides, you're gonna be playing with all the settings all the time anyway for next couple of weeks , it doesn't really matter if they get erased.

I'm sorry if this has been posted already, but searching on my phone for this answer has been less than ideal, so I've resorted to making a post. I'm hoping someone can link me to a thread that has this available.
I'm looking to root my phone, but I've already got it setup the way I like and I really don't want to go through the hassle of getting everything all ironed out again. So here is what I'm looking for:
1. Root the phone while remaining with the stock N4 ROM.
2. Don't need to "reformat" my phone or start from scratch.
3. Just to clarify 2, I want to keep the phone the way it is now, but just gain root access so I can take advantage of some apps that require it such as the Sixaxxis app for the PS3 controller and Titanium Backup.
4. Still will receive OTA updates without breaking root.
As of now I have no desire to go after any custom ROMs until I find some added functionality that I really see being useful that also doesn't break other features of my phone. So I'm really waiting on development to mature a bit more for this device before even considering something custom.
Thanks to anyone who can offer some help.

Most, if not all, rooting methods have boot-loader unlocking as a prerequisite.
Unlocking boot-loader will wipe your phone. There is no alternative.
On the bright side, you can make a backup of your system, unlock boot-loader, restore your system, then root the phone.
4. Still will receive OTA updates without breaking root.

What are my backup alternatives then to keep all those settings? I've only ever rooted one device before and I thought Titanium Backup (which requires root) was one of the only backup methods for this sort of thing? Or is there something I'm missing?
there is one backup that the app has a picture of one of those hula hoops use for saving people from drowning...

I'm not sure if you would know this answer or not, but in an app like Good Enterprise does it normally just search for root status upon initial install or does it look for the root status periodically.
Also, I had plans to unroot using the SuperSU "Full unroot" option or even the Nexus 4 tool kit. Are either one of these methods the unroot techniques you were referring too? I really don't want to brick my device if its unwise to unroot.

I would have tried to check it myself first before suggesting you the solution (I had even downloaded the app) but turns out setting up Good Enterprise requires more than just downloading and installing it. I am not sure if it checks the root status periodically but in this case looks like the only option we have is to hope that it checks only during initiation. However, if the app is any good, I think it will check root status periodically to maintain security (because a lot of app information is compromised on a rooted phone)
Also, I do not think you will brick your phone if u attempt to root 4.2.2. Simply rebooting it in fastboot mode will give you option to revert to stock even in the worst situations. Still, cannot rule out the risk.
Anyway, a simple Google Search revealed this which could be a potential solution
Well thanks for all the info. I'll see what I can figure out.
Un rooting is quite simple , nothing to worry about!
By the way, Good permissions can be set by your administrator. They have the option to allow root, to check every time, Or to check once. It all depends on how your company configures it.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
Well, I was able to use nexus 4 toolkit to uproot and relock the boot loader. The app install fine after that and is working properly.
Thanks for the replies. For some reason I was thinking I would have to return the phone back to stock to uproot it, I'm glad I was able to keep my custom ROM and kernel. 1 more question, was re-locking the boot loader necessary or could I have kept it unlocked?
voodoo ota root keeper has a temporary unroot option, grab it from the playstore , much easier than unrooting your phone, also root survives an ota from google. You probably could have left the bootloader unlocked.
easy way ??
An easy way to hide root is renaming the superuser app/apps in the below location.
/system/app
This method did the charm for me for few apps. But the disadvantage is, it will hide root for all apps..
