Would Blue Themes Harm the Screen? - Vibrant General

I believe that most of you would realize that the lifespan of the blue OLED is our screens is very short compared to the red or green. With such, would a blue theme harm the screen over time? I know Samsung uses quite a lot of blue in touchwiz, but I plan on using this phone for quite a while since I bought it off contract, so I just wanted to be sure.

What's the logic or proof behind the blue claim?

Read my first sentence. I can't remember the exact lifespan but it is very short lifespan compared to the over colors (6000 hours?).

If that is the case I'm F'd everything on my phone is blue! I doubt using a blue theme or blue icons is going to cause any problems though. Leave your screen on for 250 days find out for us eh?

I believe some people in the i9000 forums reported that the stock blue battery icon caused the icon to be seen on a blank screen, probably because of the blue fading.

I could be wrong but its probably because it gets burnt in, not faded. I've heard of people that use those LED apps that put a dot on your screen in the same place over and over and it can get burnt into it.

To answer your question: yes it does.
But the lifespan is still pretty high for you to worry.

This article is about OLED but our Super AMOLED is close.

But should i. Be worried if I plan on getting a new phone in like a year? If not than I'm really not worried.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA Premium App

That is my problem. I paid 500 for this phone and I plan to have it serve me for at least another year or two.

Even if it does all phone has its pros and cons

Did you read the wiki you posted? Said life expectancy was like 5 years at 8 hours per day. You're not gonna kill the amoled before it's time for an upgrade...

Except the screen will continue to degrade in brightness... That figure you posted is to half brightness.

5 years @ 8 hours a day. If you're using your phone with the screen on 8 hours a day, you need a JOB and then you won't have to worry about what it costs to replace.

Slcd light burn in..

Just wondering if anyone else has the burn in problem.. like for instance if I surf on my phone for a bit whatever was on the screen is still there lightly in the background til I turn of the screen for a few minutes.. maybe a refresh problem? Etc

As far as I know this just happens with the slcd (mine is AMOLED) so maybe some slcd owners could weigh in.

Usually it's the exact opposite.
@ OP: I had a slight burn in problem awhile back but it was caused by hex defense wanting to be played at max brightness for an extended amount of time. The problem fixed itself by me turning the screen off for a couple of minutes. Now when hex defense asks to bump up the screen brightness I say hell no.
A quick Googling does show that OLED displays are perhaps more susceptible than LCD, I had it mixed up. Either way, I haven't personally ran into it on my AMOLED, sorry for the mistake!

I get it a crapload on my SLCD. Just gotta learn to live with it :/
Lcd can burn in. In your instance, you would have had to left that screen on for a long time. Ive had a phillips plasma for 4 years with no burn in, it just seems wierd.

Well, actually I just noticed something. I get rapid, severe burn in on CM7, where I would get burn in after 5 - 10 minutes, but on Sense roms, I've never encountered burn in. Maybe it's something to do with the AOSP driver?

thats what i was wondering before.. cept the other way around. I was getting the burn in effect awhile back running senseless revo.. switched to cm7 to see but still get the burn in.. mostly on white or bright backgrounds.. mostly stick to dark themes. oh well.. gonna use this dinc til it dies.. then swap out to my new spare dinc..
I only use sense ROMs, and my brightness is typically very high, and i have never encountered any burn in. Can't speak for AOSP since I've never used them for more then an hour at a time. Just not my thing. lol

Damaged super amoled?

I had sixaxis app running and apparently when its running in the backround the screen wont turn off. I plugged my phone into the charger last night and when the phone was done charging the notification for done charging popped up and turned the screen on. because I had sixaxis open it didnt let the screen turn off and my screen was on all night. My question is have I damaged my screen by doing this? I fear of the infamous burn in now.
If you don't see an image burned in you're probably just fine

There is quite a bit of proof out there confirming that AMOLED will suffer burn-in. The most common cause seems to be a docking station where the user displayed an alarm clock all night or played music with the screen on for an 8+ hours a day.
So screen burn-in is a problem, but one night isn't going to significantly harm the phone, and typical users won't see any issue during the lifetime of the display.

Heat & gap concerns

Hi
I got my HTC one just under a week ago on three and I'm in love with it. But there are some things I'm worried about. One thing is that when I play games or plug the phone in charge the cool aluminum back becomes rather uncomfortably hot and makes me have to switch hands, it doesn't burn but it does irritate...
Secondly I've seen some posts about gaps at the top and I have those but I was wondering if anyone else has a very fine bulge of the plastic above where the usb port is? I don't know if this is a fault of my phone or it is a general thing so I don't know whether to ask for an exchange or not... If anyone wants pictures of the gap just say!

I can see it, i have excactly the same on my One, im just living with it though as everything else is soo perfect!
The only thing im worried about, is were that is, were the charger plugs in, the 2 little 'Catches' on the charger that hold it in rub on the white bit, in other words the hole seems to small, only slightly, i may contact HTC about this as im a little worried it will cause future problems like a Broken Charger or Charge Point etc. . .
Yeah that's exactly what I was worried about with the charger thing, if you do contact HTC let me know how it goes

Mine gets very hot too, I'm guessing that is a metal thing though, the gaps don't bother me or any slight overhang.
For me the issues are...
Blinkfeed
Heat
slow charging
home button is so hard to hit because it's small and in the corner
no battery percentage
no file search on the phone

Try a launcher or put blink feed to the side and disable all sources? The file search apps on the market do me fine but normally they put something on the battery so there is less heat transfer to one spot I n the metal but I don't think they've done that in the first batch :/ and mine charges pretty fine as well

I too have the overhang on the charging port. I have had two handsets (first one replaced due to gaps at top which moved when pressed) and its been on them both.
Second one has a slight dent/scratch in the white band, so ill wait another week (still in 28 days) and try and get another swap out. I do love the phone, battery life is immense, I'm getting about 2.5 days out of it at mo.
I have owned so many HTC phones it boggles the mind. In that time I have had to have 3 go in for repair. On stopped charging (one S) another had the wifi GPS glitch (one X international) and one just plain died one day to never turn on again (ATT one x+). All of these were taken care of by HTC. Can't say without issue, the international one X they scratched the case and took a little while to get a new one but in the end all my issues were taken care of. I would really say wait until HTC has resolved these issues and then they will take care of you 100%. You will need to be able to send the phone in for repair but they are fairly quick about 10 days total turn around time. They also didn't have any issue at all repairing a international phone at the USA HTC repair center something that is not true with Samsung.
Are you in the UK or America? Cus if you're in the UK I think I can get an exchange as well

Has anyone got a unit without dead pixels? O.o

I love the phone, but I'm onto my fourth replacement now because they've all had dead pixels. If this next one is still faulty I'll likely give up and settle for it, but I'm very surprised - I've not had this problem with any other manufacturer and it's weird that HTC has this issue.

I went through 3 Dev editions. I got tired of playing this game and cancelled my entire order. Getting a black one from ATT on friday, lets see how this goes. Worst case scenario I take it to a store and they give me one right on the spot. (or get it in from somewhere).

really don't understand the whole battery life thing, this is the longest last phone I'VE EVER HAD, i've come straight from a sensation where i was charging twice as often as this. I don't have any dead pixels either. I'm on my second one, neither had dead pixels. Only exchanged due to a weird light coming from the top of the screen, speaker crackling, heavier than usual and a gap in the screen.
My ATT store said they got a new shipment, went in and exchanged and my new One is perfect. =)

Moto X Screen burn-in

I bought my Moto X around the end of September and about two weeks after getting it, I had a screen burn-in from the notification bar and navigation bar. I let Motorola know and they happily replaced it. However few weeks after owning the second one I experienced the issue again and I let them know. They told me they were stunned and that I was literally the only person who had reported the issue.
What I am wondering is if anyone else has experienced this. I know it is a common problem with AMOLEDs, but I didn't expect it to happen so soon.

I saw burn in on a display model at Best Buy. It was the big Motorola M logo that displays at the boot animation. If you looked at a white web page or any solid, but light colored image, you could see the ghostly circle the size of a quarter complete with the swishy M in the middle of the screen. Got them to open a second demo model and boot it up so I could see a clean screen and bring it to their attention. Weird thing to have burned in, too.

Op did you leave both phones display on for 2weeks straight at 100% brightness? Lol
I have had mine for 2 months, do at least 4 hours sot daily, most of which is on reddit and xda, so nav and status are almost always static... I have zero sign of burn in.
I had it pretty good on my s3, but I blame ingress for that... Being outside playing so much and had it at 100% brightness because that screen was so dark... Even then it took at least 2 months before I saw any burn in and I was playing A LOT!
Can't imagine how you would get burn in on two devices, each in two weeks... Seems like that's a feat that you have to try and do, lol.

I'd be hard pressed to believe this as well... I've had numerous amoled devices and abused the crap out of them and even then, it took months to get any sort it noticeable burn in... If it were one device then I wouldn't second guess it, chalk it up to manufacture defect... But two in a row? I'm curious as to what the op uses his phones for and if he ever turns off the screens... Even store display models take a while to get burn in and they are on 3-4 times as much as a typical power user.

I'll have to send you a pic of my GNex then, so you can see the perfect "ghost" of a Pandora logo in the middle of the screen from running the display full time in my car dock.
I also remember similar complaints when the GNex first came out, of people claiming they were getting burn-in on the notification bar area, and I thought they were ridiculous at the time. Now, not so much.
It happened to my gnex, so I'm not surprised that it happened on this phone too.
I'm not saying you're faking it, but 2 weeks is a little too soon for it to be happening. The gnex only had the issue after a year or so. Are you keeping the display on all the time when charging or something?
They will eventually burn in if you set the screen to never time out and leave it displaying the same thing for hours or days on end. Most store models have some level of burn it. In normal use cases it should never be an issue though.

Just passing by, but 2 weeks is entirely possible.
If you keep using the phone with the notification bar displayed and then two weeks later open a full screen browser, you will most likely notice burn in if you look close enough.
It's extremely easy to do.
I bought an S3 from ebay with real bad screen burn in (that the seller didn't mention). She actually didn't believe me and accused me of scamming her until I replied back with a contact name and number that was burned into the top of the screen from the messaging app (the keyboard was also burned in, I guess she constantly texted this person).
I think burn in is more likely to happen when brightness is higher. I had a GNex and GS3 that never got any sort of burn in but I also rarely had the brightness above 50%.
you know, now that I look, I have it too. It's faint, and I thought it was from the Nova Launcher beta, but ****, this is screen burn in. Damn.
---------- Post added at 05:26 PM ---------- Previous post was at 05:13 PM ----------
I don't even use my phone that much. Generally around 1.5 or 2 hours screen time per day. Brightness is about half. Kinda crazy.
Recommend using an app such as:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.feetstech.screenburn&hl=en
to minimize this. Most plasma TV's have something like this built in as they are also prone to burn-in. Use it for 10 minutes every once in a while (even if you don't see burn in) and it should prevent it.
I got screen burn in on my S4 after 2 months. But I also blame ingress for that. I have a X coming and hope to minimize that by not playing ingress so much or play on another device. One thing that I do for the status bar to help out is with nova launcher I have it set to swipe the notification bar on top away. I try to leave it off the screen as much as possible. But yes amoled screens suck for burn in.
I usually turn my phone to the 270 degree position to have the navigation bars switch sides every now and then. That helps a bit.
And with AMOLEDs, it's more important to turn off the screen when not in use rather than let it time out. I have mine set to 10 minutes, but I usually manually turn off the screen because I know AMOLEDs are prone to burn-in over time.
